At 15 years old Joan Jett started the FIRST ALL GIRL punk/metal influenced hard rock band in 1975 which also featured a teenage Lita Ford on lead guitar and vocalist Cherie Currie (However, FANNY was the first all girl ROCK band but punk had not come into the music scene yet until the mid 70’s). In 1976 they debuted their first album “The Runaways” which spawned the classic song “Cherry Bomb”, which Joan Jett wrote as an audition song for vocalist Cherie Currie, alluding to her name and the fact that they were all “teenage firecrackers” (Cherie Currie, 16, wore a corset, fishnet stockings, black underwear and high heels on stage which gave them the reputation as “jailbait rock”). Although this was their most recognized song, it certainly does not define them as a band. Their album debuted the same time that Heart debuted their album “Dreamboat Annie”. Both bands had to deal with sexism and misogyny from the male dominated genre of hard rock, although Heart was backed by male band members, the Runaways got it worse being ALL teenage girls. They released “Queens of Noise” in 1977 and toured Japan where they were HUGE, they were NEVER taken seriously in America. Lead vocalist Cherie Currie quit the band during the tour making Joan the front girl of the band. After the tour they recorded what I think is their best album, “Waiting for the Night'' which Joan Jett wrote most of the songs, along with some songs written by Lita Ford. It was a punk/metal influenced album after touring in England and being exposed to the punk rock scene, later touring with the Ramones, Cheap Trick, etc. By 1978 there was heavy drug abuse and tension among the remaining 3 members of the band (Joan, Lita and drummer Sandy West) after they released their 4th and final studio album “And now, the Runaways” (which featured the song “Black Leather” written by Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols). Joan Jett gravitated towards a Punk sound and both Lita and Sandy towards a more heavy metal sound. By Spring 1979 the band broke up and Joan Jett began her solo career which would last till this day. Later Lita Ford would also find mainstream success.
Ahhhhhhhhh, ok. Thank you for that awesome, educational comment. I read it all. Shame they werent taken seriously, but they left us 4 albums. Cool Joan and Lita kept going. I wonder what happened to Others that left? Hmmm. ~ Tazzz ~
Bassist Jackie Fox became a Lawyer & lead singer Cherie Currie has continued music as well as acting & she became known as a chainsaw artist (look it up she’s REAL good at it). Cherie Currie has performed with Joan Jett in recent years and she has performed with LITA Ford in recent years. Sandy West the drummer had more of a struggle in life and eventually died of cancer in 2006 (R.I.P.)
@ I’ve seen Joan live many times over the years and have met her twice. I saw LITA for the first time in January this year, I posted some videos & shorts from the show on my channel
@@tazzznphilly Have you seen the video from Joan Jett “Bad Reputation”??? It chronicles in a short 3 minute song/video what happened to her after the Runaways broke up & she started to pursue a solo career. She made a demo tape with 5 songs and 23, yes 23, record labels rejected her saying “lose the guitar” “look prettier” (Joan being a tomboy) & “get better songs”. Mind you 4 of those songs became Billboard hits with Crimson and Clover being in the top 10 & “I Love Rock n Roll” hitting #1 for 7 weeks straight!!!! But out of being rejected 23 times, which Joan still has every letter to this day, she & her manager/producer started their OWN record label, Blackheart Records, and put out her first solo album with it and selling the record out of the trunk of their car at all the shows, and it was through self-promotion that I love rock ‘n’ roll began being played on the radio and hit number one. Joan Jett is the first female to ever own. Her own record label.
OK looks like you already got The Encyclopedia Runaways on this thread so all that leaves for me is to say you're 3 for 3 with great reactions to great choices for videos👍👍👍👍👍👍, and oh for three on videos over your shoulder🤪

The Runaways inspired other girls such as Girlschool, the Go-Go's, Vixen, Hole (Courtney Love), L7, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, the Donnas, Kittie, etc.
I can't believe you never heard of this band. SMH. This is a killer tune. Joan Jett and Lita Ford got their start from here. Finally a kick ass rock song on the channel. I believe the bassist for The Bangles Miki Steele was in the band for a bit.
@@Kauffdrop Lolol, I lived in a bubble before this channel. No, never heard of this band before. Prakaklef had to tell me Joan Jett came from this band. Now, I KNOW Joan Jett. Do I get some credit there? 😁
Yes Mickey Steele was the first vocalist/bassist in 1975 (their demo album is on youtube, they were a 3 piece w/ Joan Jett and Sandy West). Manager/Producer Kim Fowley (scumbag) fired Mickey Steele and Peggy Foster was briefly replaced as bassist and Lita Ford was hired as lead guitarist and then Kim Fowley and Joan Jett recruited Cherie Currie on lead vocals. Peggy Foster was eventually replaced by Jackie Fox on bass (although it was Blondie's bassist on the first debut album).

Thats great you really liked it, Kristel. Joan Jett is amazing....lol, I just didn't realize she came from this group.
