They reacted to "Kiss Me Deadly" like 2 weeks ago. They definitely need to hear "Close My Eyes Forever" next. Best hard rock ballad of all time in my opinion.
You have to remember the era this came out. They were the LITERAL BAD GIRLS!!! Many also see this as an FU to society and family! It is a fun catchy tune!
The record company wanted the Runaways portrayed this way, but the girls hated it. All these girls had crazy talent, and some of them like Joan and Lita went on to have great musical careers. Too bad the record company couldn't let the Runaways be themselves who knows what great music got buried because of it. On the other hand, Close My Eyes Forever may have never been recorded. Ozzie and Lita. It's a must listen.
I don't know about "crazy talent" But it is true that they resented the sort of sex bomb portrayal and just wanted to rock. It really did get them billed tho at first. As far as talent, they were young and just starting out. Some had great aptitude and others not so much. But as a commercial creation they did have all the ingredients to sell tickets, and whether they resented it or not, their sexploitation was a big part of getting the ball rolling for them. The lead singer could barely sing at first but they all got pretty good and were fun to watch. The energy was good. . The others were not great, just adequate. Like most rock bands starting out, they got better with work and practice, and a few with real talent had the capacity to go further. Databyter
Love this song, you should listen to “Schools Days” (Cherie Currie had left the band by then and Joan had taken over lead vocals), or “Queens Of Noise”
The Runaways were a band formed in the mid 70s, a group of teenage girls, bye Joan and the drummer Sandy West. Cherie Currie is the lead vocalist, Lita Ford whom you covered before (Kiss me Deadly) is the lead guitar, she played the guitar solo, Joan is the backup guitarist and minor backup vocals, Jackie Fox as bassist, Joan only sung a few songs, Wasted is one of them.
Some suggestions for female Friday: Quarterflash - "Find Another Fool" and "Harden My Heart" ( she plays the Sax ) The Motels - "Only the Lonely" and "Shame" Yvonne Elliman - If I Cant Have You (great disco song) Katrina and the Waves - "Walking on Sunshine" and "Going Down to Liverpool" ( which the Bangles later did a cover of )
I recently watched a Joan Jett documentary. She wrote Cherry Bomb but was too shy to sing it and just really wanted to play guitar. When Cherie left the band, Joan became lead singer. She has her own version of the song it’s way better
I note Kim Fowley gets a writing credit (as well as being producer ) I suspect this might be the often used promoter taking a fee cut with a writing royalty, but probably did craft the arrangement for commercial release
@@highpath4776. On the commentary track to The Runaways movie, Joan says, of the scene where she and Fowley walk into a room together and just start bouncing lyrics off each other, and write "Cherry Bomb" in a few minutes, "That's exactly the way it happened."
Mike Steele, bassist from the Bangles was originally a Runaway before their debut but was dismissed before their debut. She didn't want to be mentioned on their biopic.
There were a lot of great girl groups in the 60s and most of those were just vocal and didn't play instruments. One of the best of those (my personal favorite) is the Ronettes featuring Ronnie Spector on lead vocal. Their song 'Be My Baby' was a huge hit and inspired Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys to write some of his songs.
I also am surprised that they are ignoring one of the biggest trends in popular music: the girl groups of the early 1960s. Not only the Ronettes, but also the Crystals, the Shirelles, the Chiffons, Chantelles, Marvelettes, and many more made great songs.
Spencer, you are SO right. Even the Supremes with Diana are more than worthy of a look. The Shangri-las- leader of the pack. Martha and the Vandellas- dancing in the street. Just to start.
Finally, I've been waiting for this!!!!! The Runaways is my absolute fav band, I'm so jealous of all the people in the comments that saw them back in the 70s haha. For another LA-based all-female seventies rock band, but one that relied more on musicianship and less on in-your-face image, try Fanny, a critical favorite in the early seventies who regularly toured with major rock groups of the time and became very popular in the UK but had only a few minor hits in the US with songs like a 1970 cover of Cream's "Badge," "Charity Ball" (1971), and a 1972 cover of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar." You'll be impressed by their musicianship.
Fanny was the first all female rock band signed to a major record label. They are finally starting to get some recognition. Check June Millington's slide on "Ain't That Peculiar"
LITA FORD was the lead guitar player for "The Runaways", just so you know...couldn't tell from your review of "Cherry Bomb"...And SANDY WEST, may she RIP, was in my opinion the absolute best female rock drummer ever...in history...and in the top 10 ever, men or women...I've seen Joan and the Blackhearts 23 times total, once where Cherie Currie sang 3 songs, and it's just so sad what happened to them..But still pay respect to the band and their talent/influence, which was massive... BTW..they have 3 albums, try another one to be impressed, like "Black Leather", "Wasted", ""You Drive Me Wild ", "American Nights", etc...Thanks for doing this one!
An all female band that predates The Runaways is a completelyoverlooked band of rockers called Fanny. I would suggest the live video of their rendition of The Beatles song "Hey Bulldog" recorded live in 1971. These four women could hold their own and go toe-to-toe with any of their contemporary all-male bands.
And yes, sometime Suzi Quatro..Miss Leather Tuscadero herself should be on your list. Just NOT that fluffy duet. Has to be a rocker😎🎸 I suggest this one...48 Crash! Suzi Quatro - 48 Crash Remastered HD Original Music Video RARE 1973
The Runaways could never have existed without rock pioneers Fanny blazing the trail. The first all female rock band to cut albums for a major label gets NOWHERE NEAR the credit and love that they deserve. Check out 'Blind Alley', 'Ain't That Peculiar' or their killer covers of The Beatles 'Hey Bulldog' and Cream's 'Badge'. A badass band of ladies, formed by the Filipina sisters June and Jean Millington, that could really rock. It's absolutely criminal that these ladies are being forgotten!!!! You might as well check them out because I will be posting for them every Female Friday until you do.✌😎
Your advocacy got me to look them up online, and now I second your recommendation. They really do seem like the most important female rock band that nobody's ever heard of.
Hey, Jordan and Amber Something that you might not be aware of, Lita Ford was also a member of this band too As well as Micheal Steele, the bassist of "The Bangles", during her tenure as the bassist of The Runaways, Michael Steele was credited professionally as Micky Steele
@@skinnybuddha74 It's great. It's a biopic, like the one about Motley Crue. We get to see em thinking about starting a band, starting the band, and then having issues. The blonde chick wasn't a dedicated musician, she was just a singer, so she just hung it up.
Check out the band Fanny. They are the first all female rock band to get sign to a major lable. They are still going strong in their 70’s. Should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I too made the same suggestion. Fanny were the Real Deal. I listed their version of "Hey Bulldog". Another great song by them is Stephen Stills S"pecial Care". And they definitely were not just a cover band. Their original compositions where great. Each member of the band were world class musicians IMHO.
Thank you. Thank you! For doing the Runaways. Joan started the band and the first song she ever wrote was with her manager Kim Foley Cherry Bomb as a play on their lead singers name Cherie Curry. Cherie was the lead singer for 2 albums. If you want to her Joan sing play. “Rock n Roll” with great cowbell!!
The Runaways were roughly 16 when they made this album. They were most definitely out of control wild, there were reports of drug use, tons of sex (with men, with women, with each other), and lots of alcohol. This lead singer was recruited by Joan Jett and record producer/manager Kim Fowley (a man) because she had "the look". Cherie was with the Runaways for two albums before leaving because she was burning herself out with all of the drugs and drinking. On their third and final album Joan Jett and Lita Ford split vocals. If you're interested in a good Joan Jett vocals song i would recommend I Love Playing with Fire from their second album.
Watched a video that ranked the top ten Felmale guitarists. Lita Ford was number 1 and Nancy Wilson was number 2, Others on the were Bonnie Raitt, Sister Rosetta Tharp and Mother Maybell Carter.
Lita Ford was in the band as well. This song was # 52 on the VH1 top 100 and Lita was #76 with Kiss me deadly. Lita was the only female to be in there 2x. Also the runaways were as popular in Japan as the Beatles were in the USA.
I've been a Runaways fAn since 1976. Met them all in Dallas at a record called Peaches for a record signing. Met Joan MANY years later in Tyler Texas. For some reason she remembered meeting my friends and I. She called off the security guards to take the time to thank me for the suppe and said she remembered me.and my friends from back then. Maybe she remembered, maybe she didn't but she took the time to thank me for supporting her.. What a wonderful LADY
Hear more joan and some go-gos. Listen to their song...our lips are sealed...solo on the middle that will hook you. Their lead singer went on to a big career as solo...
I feel the same as Amber. I never got into the runaways and never found their music all that special. They seemed to have made it strictly on their bad girl vibe and the uniqueness as all girls. Joan by herself wrote much better music. Just my opinion though. I know many wouldn’t agree.
I totally agree. I discovered the Runaways after already being a fan of Joan Jett's solo career and... meh. While a lot of people will talk about how strong and awesome a person Cherie Currie is and how much she's been through, it doesn't change the fact that I think they would've sounded a LOT better with someone else on vocals. But, then, my understanding is that they originally approached Cherie at a nightclub because they liked her look, not because anyone had heard her sing. And, to be fair, the Runaways themselves didn't like the "sexy, bad girl" image they were saddled with. When asked why The Runaways were having a hard time being taken seriously, Joan Jett said, "It was that whole 'Cherry Bomb With The Corset' thing with Cherie." Reading their history, you see that they were being marketed as "jailbait rock" and their manager treated them the way a pimp treats his prostitutes. He kept them drugged up, without money, and constantly abused them (insulted them, threw things at them while they rehearsed, had sex with a woman in front of them (while they were minors) so they could learn how to be "sexy" onstage, allegedly drugged and raped the drummer, etc). While a lot of people (even here in these comments) glorify the Runaways as liberated girls giving a big, strong FU to society, the truth is that they were minors who were abused by the adults around them, pushed into playing "jailbait" to titillate pervs, and pretty much abandoned by their parents. So, yeah, their history is interesting and sad and frustrating but their music? Meh.
Most of the videos you get from that time period before MTV were actually just promo videos made just for radio producers. They would send out a video of the group performing the song to get the radio station's producer and DJs to see who they were and their style in an effort to get them to play the song. These would be performances with the produced radio version of the song on the tape because they wanted the producers to hear the actual song as they would play on the radio and not a "live" version. Often budgets for these videos were small and not a lot of effort put into them. For reference Queen's video for Bohemian Rhapsody is an example of this. It isn't a live performance either. It was made on a short budget just for radio producers and sent out with the tapes of the song to stations and not intended for public consumption. The idea that music videos were ever going to be a thing was unheard of at the time so it is amazing that so many of these tapes even survived. Of course another source for these old music videos we get to enjoy is variety TV shows that were hugely popular in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Occasionally these were true live performances but a lot of the time they were canned music or lip-synced to make sure the music was good quality for the TV audience. This was most often the case for live TV shows that didn't want audio problems to cause issues for the broadcast. You can often spot these by looking for guitars not plugged into amps in the days before wireless, as well as singers without mics. They were often trying to get a scene set rather than worrying about making sure it looked like the band was actually playing the song.
Lira Ford was the lead guitarist in the Runaways as well. They were all quite young while they were the Runaways Cheri Curri is the lead singer. I believe their manager wrote or co-wrote this song to give them a signature catchy hit, while playing off the all girl line-up.
Guy's please try some Angelina Jordan, I know you did I Put A Spell On You ( recorded when she was 9 ) but she has grown ( she's 15 now ). She has 152 recorded songs on YT, including 3 originals. For her Low register, Rihanna's Stay, and Lana Del Ray's Born To Die, and to hear her higher register, A tribute to Whitney Houston I Have Nothing. But anything you choose out of ALL her singing will blow you away.
Cherie Curry sang lead but when she left Joan took over vocals, in her videos Joan plays bass but here she is playing rhythm guitar. They were actually a punk band but Joan and Lita both went hard rock in their solo careers.
They were totally directed to titillate and weren’t taken very seriously by music snobs at that time, although most members would have long and fulfilling careers, but this lineup shouldn’t be confused with a GOGO’s or BANGLES as those groups wrote music and were way better musically when they emerged. But Jett and Ford would definitely become accomplished performers later on.
So that's Cherie Curry singing lead. Yes, that's Joan Jett on lead guitar and Lita Ford who you reacted to with the song KISS ME DEADLY on guitar. Yes this is where Joan Jet and Lita Ford both got their start before going out on their own. Although not on this song, Micki Steele was also in this band in the beginning and she soon left the band and joined THE BANGLES. Joan Jett is definitely the best thing to come out of this band in my opinion though. I actually feel she should have sang more of the lead vocals as I much prefer her voice. This song was actually composed by Joan Jett and their manager specifically for Cherie Curry to sing for her original audition because it fit her voice better.

It’s important to make sure these incredible musicians get their due here and recognize that they went onto the things they did despite what they had to deal with starting out.
Lita Ford was also in this legendary band.
With the long blonde hair
You should check out Lita as well. Kiss me Deadly. And her duet with Ozzy. Close My Eyes Forever
“The Runaways” staring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherrie Curry is really good! Watch AFTER the kids have gone to sleep!
Makes me kind of sick to think that Cherie Currie was like 14 and Dakota Fanning was only 14 or 15 in that movie 😣
@@andie361 - Dakota Fanning was well into her 20s when she played the part of 15yo Cherie Currie.
@@consciousbeing1188 Unfortunately, she wasn’t. She was 15. She’s 27 now, the movies 12 yrs old. You can look it up .
🤔... Didn’t realize she was so young. Well, such is the life of a child actor. What they are exposed to off camera is what we should be concerned with.
Lita Ford is also in this band with Joan Jett. Lita does that first little solo where you said you liked her guitar.
John Mellencamp also has a song called Cherry Bomb that's totally worth reacting to. It's not a cover. It's a completely different song.
Much safer.
Love, love, love that song!
Any song by Mellencamp is the shiiiii....
Cherrie Currie on vocals with Joan Jett and Lita Ford also in the band.
Try Lita's duet with Ozzy, Close My Eyes Forever.
They reacted to Kiss me Deadly. They loved Lita. They need to do Close my eyes forever tho
They did Kiss Me Deadly.
@@ms.dirtybird7779 Crap, getting old sucks, I already forgot about that.
They reacted to "Kiss Me Deadly" like 2 weeks ago. They definitely need to hear "Close My Eyes Forever" next. Best hard rock ballad of all time in my opinion.
@@chriso6719 I completely understand that. I don't remember what happened this morning.
The talent in this band was very high. Jett and Lita Ford being the easiest to point at. They were ground breakers. They deserve the credit.
Databyter
@@Databyter I won't speak to Jackie Fox's musical talent, but she'd done well enough for herself what with her law career and Jeopardy! victories...
Love this song, you should listen to “Schools Days” (Cherie Currie had left the band by then and Joan had taken over lead vocals), or “Queens Of Noise”
Joan Jett bare cords, Lita Actual talent
All I can think of is “School days, school days, Dear old golden rules days. W/ reading and writing and arithmetic…” 😂
The other guitarist was Lita Ford. You did her song Kiss Me Deadly.
CHCK Out Aldious Die For You live, you'll really like this song
The Runaways were a band formed in the mid 70s, a group of teenage girls, bye Joan and the drummer Sandy West. Cherie Currie is the lead vocalist, Lita Ford whom you covered before (Kiss me Deadly) is the lead guitar, she played the guitar solo, Joan is the backup guitarist and minor backup vocals, Jackie Fox as bassist, Joan only sung a few songs, Wasted is one of them.
They aren't ladies at this point they're all teenage girls.
Some suggestions for female Friday:
Quarterflash - "Find Another Fool" and "Harden My Heart" ( she plays the Sax )
The Motels - "Only the Lonely" and "Shame"
Yvonne Elliman - If I Cant Have You (great disco song)
Katrina and the Waves - "Walking on Sunshine" and "Going Down to Liverpool" ( which the Bangles later did a cover of )
Great suggestions! Quarterflash was a great band. I was lucky to see them in concert once.
Now you gotta do Suzie Quatro - Wild One!
Yes! She was Joan's inspiration
Fun note - Bangles bassist Michael Steele was the Runaways' original lead singer. She left before they got a record deal.
@@highpath4776 actually they go wrote it.
A banger for girls! This was a girl power song. So rebellious for out day!
These girls were all really young at the time around 15, 16 years old...(Runaways!)
I would also recommend "California Paradise, "You drive me wild" and "I love playin with fire", which the last one has Joan Jett on the lead vocals.
Ha! One of the old timers here you’re talking about. Just wanna say Lita shreds on that live California Paradise video and plays a great solo on the studio version of I love playin with fire. Lita and Sandy were excellent musicians
Fun fact: the Bangles bass player Micki Steele was also a founding member of the Runaways (though she didn;t stick around for long).
Cass Elliott with the beautiful voice of John Denver. !!" Leaving on a jet plane". Live! It's a midnight special! also: Judy Garland,,,,,, Dixie Chicks. And more Karen Carpenter please "(kickas drummers" it's a video of Karen Carpenter doing her drum solo it'd be kind of different for the female Fridays. Much love and appreciation, Eric

Yes they were wild and very young.Like 15 years old.
Fanny is still making music with their grandchildren
Fanny was the first all female rock band signed to a major record label. They are finally starting to get some recognition. Check June Millington's slide on "Ain't That Peculiar"
Very talented band. Under rated and oft overlooked.
Yes!!! Great song 🎵
Cherie Curry on vocals Lita is also on guitar.
Also they were young teenagers
Next Stops:
Joan Jett, "I Hate Myself for Loving You"
Concrete Blonde, "Bloodletting"
L7, "Pretend We're Dead"
L7 - Shit List!
Lita Ford duet with Ozzy Osborne
"Close my eyes forever" ❤️❤️❤️
The "lady" singing in this video is 16 years old, crazy stuff.
It's not just Joan, Lita is also on guitar just FYI
There is a Movie Called "the Runaways" based on the band. The movie starred Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Curry.
And yes, sometime Suzi Quatro..Miss Leather Tuscadero herself should be on your list. Just NOT that fluffy duet. Has to be a rocker😎🎸
I suggest this one...48 Crash!
Suzi Quatro - 48 Crash Remastered HD Original Music Video RARE 1973
When Cherrie Currie lead singer future singers Joan Jett,Lita Ford played guitar and backup vocals all three girls were between 15-18
The Runaways could never have existed without rock pioneers Fanny blazing the trail.
Hey, Jordan and Amber
Something that you might not be aware of, Lita Ford was also a member of this band too
As well as Micheal Steele, the bassist of "The Bangles", during her tenure as the bassist of The Runaways, Michael Steele was credited professionally as Micky Steele
Oh heck yeah! There's a movie about The Runaways on Netflix. I think Kristen Stewart plays Joan Jett.
I've heard of it but haven't seen it. Is it any good?
@@skinnybuddha74 It's great. It's a biopic, like the one about Motley Crue. We get to see em thinking about starting a band, starting the band, and then having issues. The blonde chick wasn't a dedicated musician, she was just a singer, so she just hung it up.
I was screaming Lita Ford too! Lol. Like you could hear me. You all should do some reactions live sometime. Maybe with requests.
Fun song!!🤘🔥
Love you guys! Female Friday Rocks! or country's or whatever genre... LOL
Original singer was Cherie Currie . After departing the band Joan became singer for this band. Not only is Joan Jett in this band so is Lita Ford
They were all only 15-17 years old when they released this song, the youngest being the lead singer Cherie Currie at just 15yrs old...
"Oh her guitar is cool"... I guess Lita Ford is two for two in RSR reaction videos for guitar approval. LOl.
Really, listen to Veruca Salt!!!!!!!! Volcano Girls or Seether! They were my favorite 90s all girls band!
The lead singer is Cherrie Curry. Also, there's Lita Ford in there!
Hey Jordan its said that The Runaways sometimes sidined or opened up for AC/DC in the 70's as well when Bon Scott sung for AC/DC
Great reaction!!!
When the band started they were as young as 15. There are some very disturbing stories about how those girls were used and abused.
Leaders and pioneers of kick ass female rockers
Queens of Noise has Joan singing.
Dead End Kids in a Danger Zone are also great songs by the Runaways
Thank you.
Bout time. I've been pushing this band for Friday for months now.
Watched a video that ranked the top ten Felmale guitarists. Lita Ford was number 1 and Nancy Wilson was number 2, Others on the were Bonnie Raitt, Sister Rosetta Tharp and Mother Maybell Carter.
Dont forget the beautiful and talented Lita Ford :)
The original Runaways bassist (already departed by the time of this song) was Micki Steele, who later resurfaced as bassist/vocalist for The Bangles.
I feel the same as Amber. I never got into the runaways and never found their music all that special. They seemed to have made it strictly on their bad girl vibe and the uniqueness as all girls. Joan by herself wrote much better music. Just my opinion though. I know many wouldn’t agree.
They were always presented as a titillating novelty. Mediocre musically at best, though Joan and Lita both evolved into credible musicians
When asked why The Runaways were having a hard time being taken seriously, Joan Jett said, "It was that whole 'Cherry Bomb With The Corset' thing with Cherie."
Reading their history, you see that they were being marketed as "jailbait rock" and their manager treated them the way a pimp treats his prostitutes.
They were all quite young while they were the Runaways
Cheri Curri is the lead singer. I believe their manager wrote or co-wrote this song to give them a signature catchy hit, while playing off the all girl line-up.
Cherrie Curry also sang this as a duet with Allison Scagliotti on Warehouse13 to celebrate the 21st birthday of Allison's character, Claudia Donovan.
Queen of Noise or Hollywood would be great Runaways songs to check out.
Love it .... Classic .... Joan and Lita ford..... "Dead end justice" was a topper live !!!!!
Definitely need to react to "Dead end Justice"
Cherie Curry sang lead but when she left Joan took over vocals, in her videos Joan plays bass but here she is playing rhythm guitar. They were actually a punk band but Joan and Lita both went hard rock in their solo careers.
They were totally directed to titillate and weren’t taken very seriously by music snobs at that time, although most members would have long and fulfilling careers, but this lineup shouldn’t be confused with a GOGO’s or BANGLES as those groups wrote music and were way better musically when they emerged. But Jett and Ford would definitely become accomplished performers later on.
Of course Micki/Mickey/Michael Steele was in the Runaways before The Bangles.
Thank you! I was in a mood and this cheered me up!
Almost right. It was Lita on lead and Joan playing rhythm. Otherwise spot on comment.
Jackie Fox, their bass player, also dated Randy Rhoads, the great guitarist from Ozzy Osbourne’s band. RIP

The Beatclub videos are the best place to start. Blind Alley, Place In The Country, Special Care, full version of Ain't It Peculiar.
Just read that the song was sang by Cherie Curry and was a play on her name. I know nothing about her but Lita Ford was also a guitar player in this group, was epic.
Great genre !!!

This was Joan Jett and Lita Ford when they were teenagers. Simple, repetitive songs.
