Another weird thing in the movie is that Kaya is just chilling on the beach with a bunch of people around. Book Kaya was hiding in the bushes observing and never would have put herself in a situation amongst a crowd of people like that.
I wondered at Chase's infatuation with Kya - he wears her necklace until the day he died, even long after he's engaged and committed to Pearl.
Thank you for posting your thoughts. Perhaps I would have viewed it differently if I knew about the allegations. Knowing the backstory is a bit unsettling. Like you, I definitely agree that it is worth streaming, especially if you read the book. I believe the book was successful because of the intricate details about the marshlands, Kya’s insurmountable obstacles, her determination, and the book’s ending.
Considering the time period and Kya’s circumstances, I understand her actions. She had limited resources and the town ostracized her. The bullying, the assault, the stalking and the abandonment by her parents, siblings, Tate, and Chase were major issues. She was left with limited options. She was the mentally, emotionally, and physically abused. No one could, or would, protect her from Chase. Where could she turn? She had no family or friends. She tried to live a self sustaining and respectful life, by herself, on land that she owned.
The only constant was Mabel and Jumpin. Since the book takes place in the 1950-60s, North Carolina, their involvement was a major risk. There was no way Mabel and Jumpin’ could have adopted her. They did everything they could do to help, especially in the book. Their involvement helped save her life.
There are so many subtle “life lessons”. In a sense, the town was on trial too. Their cruelty, beliefs, and judgmental actions were contributing factors. It also helps people understand the importance of helping people, kindness, and empathy.
Very well put! Thanks for commenting 😊
Trauma is also a central theme - from the earliest trauma suffered by Kya's mother, and the kids, who witnessed her abuse at the hands of their father. The impact of Kya's own experience of trauma as a child infected her views on life and quest for survival. All of her family was traumatized both by the abuse of the father and the attitudes of the townspeople.
yeah definitely
It bothered me too that they didn't include Tate coming back to see Kya and her almost feral behaviour that freaked him out. It really makes you sympathize with him less and not see as much of a reason for Kya to reunite with him.
Definitely!
Thanks for pointing that out. I thought it was strange, but figured that I was over analyzing the scene.
Really enjoyed you guys going over this! Never read or watched them, but it was super engaging to hear your perspectives on the adaptation and book. 😍
Thank you so much!
I haven't read this or seen the movie, but it's cool to see your discussion with your sister!
Thanks! It's always fun having a family member on 😊
A good discussion and video
Thanks!
This video is a trip for me
I enjoyed the movie overall, but I hated that they left out Kaya's poems under a pseudonym. The Firefly poem gave me chills at the end of the book. I feel like because they cut that out, they should have shown visuals of the murder taking place at the end.
Y’all disagreeing on almost everything cracked me up! Reminds me of me and my sister 😂😂😂
Lol 😆 Yeah we definitely had differing opinions!
Good Lord this movie was a circus last summer at the theatre I work at. So many groups of middle aged women wanted to see this; the younger audiences tried to sneak out of it into Black Phone
Oh wow haha, seems like the theater I went to was pretty sparse when I went.
@@WhytheBookWins lucky you haha. It took a couple weeks for the crowds to die down
Did you like the book or movie more? My biggest gripe about the movie was the actress, i imagined she was little more desirable. Great review love the channel
My sister liked the book more. I didn't particularly love either one, but I think the book was a bit better. Glad you like the channel! 😁
