    I'm happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I gave him nickname Kennedy Steve and published more than 100 video clips of him, but sad because I wasn't the one who made this interview. Great job Joe. I really liked it. 🙂💪🏼

    Still my favorite funny when a plane forgot to call him using their callsign.

    I was fortunate enough to similarly reach out to Steve in respect and admiration; and was received with equally gracious humanity. We, as a nation, are literally in debt to a man that brought that same sense of humanity and not-too-full-of-himself "normalcy" which so often, for so many years, brought a sense of "it's okay" to his highly stressful environment. I suspect that many in our country now - whether we wish to admit it to ourselves or not - long for that very sense of "it's okay" for our populace and our personal interactions; particularly in the political and racial arena. Thank you again, Steve and to Captain Joe for creating this for us all.

    Captain Joe. Thanks for this. I actually had the opportunity to get a tour of JFK tower years ago (sometime in the very late 90s and early 00's) as a young Civil Air Patrol cadet. A bunch of us had the opportunity to go there. I'm sure Kennedy Steve was there that day. Most memorable moments were An ATC controller said "watch this, I'm about to send off the Concorde." Once he cleared it for take off we all fell silent as it roared to the sky. The second was a rookie ATC with the look of total stress on her face. At the time she had 6 months or so in and looked like a bag of nerves.

    Joe, Can you explain in a video what the Class A, B, C, etc airspace's are for? Why even have different airspace's?

    • @fruitygirl1231
      @fruitygirl1231 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Airspaces are normally generated mainly for IFR traffic. Class A airspace is for IFR rated pilot's. It begins at FL180 up to 600. Class B's are your major airports that are heavy congested, and you must have ATC clearance to enter that airspace. Class C's also contain heavy traffic, but in class C's you must establish two way communication. They are also classes D, E, and G, which can get a little confusing, and Joe can explain it better than I could. There are also different rules for day and night within the airspaces when you are VFR rated. But the main reason that there are so many airspaces is to protect the IFR pilots. Hope that helps! :)

    • @eaglethedigger
      @eaglethedigger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Hannah. As a PPL I can tell you that as a Vfr pilot you worry much more about airspaces than an Ifr pilot. Sometimes ifr airliners are not aware when they enter class E. And that is where the fun begins ;)

    • @lucasbrien5008
      @lucasbrien5008 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To add onto Hannah Galina, class D is a cylinder, otherwise identical to class C. Class G is up to 1200ft AGL except for in certain areas highlighted on charts where it is 700ft AGL so that ARTCC can control IFR traffic as they cannot do so in class G. Class Echo is literally everything else. An important thing to remember is that you cannot exceed 200kts below a piece of class B.

    • @eaglethedigger
      @eaglethedigger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lucasbrien5008 wow. Thanks. That is interesting. In Germany it's actually fundamentally different. It's max 250kts below class C and in C below 10000ft. And G is 2500ft AGL that can be lowered to 1700ft and 1000ft for the reasons you mentioned. And we only have class C D E and G effective at the moment. And we do have RMZ (radio mandentory zones) and TMZ (transponder mandentory zones) which actually enhance class E. Cheers.

    Loved it... He is a hoot and half. My dad retired in 1972 after 30 years as a tower supervisor at MIA. And I grew up from infancy to late teens spending many hours and nights in the tower with him. And watching Kennedy Steve is amazing. Times were way simpler back in my dad's day. ARTS III (if I remember correctly) was in its infancy and being implemented and he only saw it as a demo at Transpo '72 at IAD. Though I went into the aviation field (pretty much stayed on terrafirma) I could not imagine ever having Steve's ability to do what he does. Anyway, love the videos keep up the great work.

    Captain Joe, thank you for posting this interview with Kennedy Steve. I listened to many of the videos of him and it is easy to see how he became a legend. Always professional and efficient with a great sense of humor. I think he lightened up a very stressful situation. I was happy for him when he retired and I truly hope he is enjoying it. But at the same time, I was sorry to see him leave.

    What a stand-up guy, able to keep his composure, even under the notorious stress of busy but limited JFK. Kennedy Steve, I wish for you an excellent (quiet, peaceful, drama free) retirement, with the hope that you'll really do the audiobook or paperback or something, with a title like "The Best of Kennedy Steve". Thank you sincerely, for 30 years of service (at JFK!!!) with an outstanding record of safety (first) and efficiency (making the absolute MOST of those few, old runways!). You are, absolutely, one in a million!

    Kennedy Steve! I frequently listen to those videos featuring his ATC work for background noise as I do my own work. They're actually great for learning how to communicate with others, especially over a radio or while doing online sessions. Thanks for this!

    Captain Joe is an the final approach to JFK. His giant 747 then touches down at the very beginning of the runway. He applies full reverse thrust and slams the breaks as hard as possible. Wheels are starting to glow and tires are explosing due to the enormous heat. But he manages to bring the plane to a full stop just one meter before he crashes into the gate. The fireguard cools the langing gear and everything turns out to be fine after all. "Damn" says Joe and transmitts to the air traffic controller, "that's an extremly short rumway you have here!!"
    -
    "True that" responds Kennedy Steve, "but it's more than 14,000 feet wide!"

    I full agreement with the B757 being a favorite. I've never given a 75 a restriction he couldn't accept. And believe me, we tried. Once, due traffic we gave American Airlines B757 a turn opposite his normal one to make a tight right loop and cross overhead the field located VOR at 2000 feet then on course. She lit off the runway like a bat outa hell, climbed almost straight up and was out of FL50 by the time she came back around overhead the VOR. Just.... wow. 757s getting rarer and rarer now, which is just sad.

    My favorite Kennedy Steve transmission I have heard.
    A Cessna was taxing in and B747 (I think) just pushed out. K.S told the 47 to hold for the prop then taxi to runway and warned the jumbo of "prop wash". The jumbo piolet went to repeat but his mind did the error 404 and had to reboot then replied back with the directions.
