In the song she is speaking from the point of view of the other woman. In reality she had discovered her husband and best friend had been having an adulterous affair. That is why she is so heartbroken and emotional. No acting just real life.

Jennifer wrote the lyrics in 15 minutes. She wrote this song in reaction to Reba's song 'Whoevers In New England', a song about a wife sending her husband off to way too many business trips to New England. After hearing that song, Jennifer thought 'I wonder what the other woman would say in response to Reba's point of view. And she sat down and wrote this in 15 minutes. She said that the words just poured out and she went out to run errands. Jennifer is a terrific song writer so I believe it. She is also one of the most talented singers around. Once you hear her voice, you will never forget it. About the video. She was going through a divorce (not because of cheating, btw) and she was really emotional. Her bandmate kicked everyone but the camera person out of the room because she was feeling so vulnerable. I am so glad that you played this. I knew you would LOVE her voice! She's a Georgia girl like me, and she definitely sings with her accent in the mix. 😊
I heard they did the video in one take also because she was so raw...Kristian wasn’t letting them put her through that again. I've seen them do it live and honestly...she's such a channel that she just pours the emotion out every time they do it. I highly recommend everyone watch "Coat of many Colors" the movie where she plays Dolly Parton's mother...she really is a wonderful actress but also was just really going thru it that day because of the divorce.
She's incredible, but remember that live autotune exists. The famous version of Sound of Silence by Disturbed features a TON of autotuning -- which is okay! It doesn't make a bad voice good. And I've never heard a live recording of Nettles that's using autotune. Just saying!
My first exposure was her duet with Matt Nathanson. Fantastic song, and both artists have their own Official Music Video for it. Matt's video has scenes of him watching the Sugarland video (a live performance). Would love to see a reaction to that one. "Run" is the name of it. Great song, and some fantastic chemistry in the Sugarland video.
Yes, this song is from the so-called side chick's point of view. At the end, she tells her lover to just stay with his wife, she's had it. She stood up for herself.
Now you need to hear" Girl Crush." By "Little Big Town." That one has a different meaning than you first think, too, and the vocals are excellent also❤😊
Girl Crush is such a crazy song. It’s literally one of the greatest song written and recorded, both Girl crush and stay are just out of this world songs. Just heartbreaking 💔
Jennifer Nettles explains every harm that cheating men can do to women (on both sides of the coin). Her solo song His Hands is even more powerful in it's message. For the fun side of Sugarland, watch the official Stuck Like Glue - a country, reggae, calypso fun song.
The 15 second realization on your face though 😂 yes yes side chick LOL Twisted! You got it correctamundo BP loved the reaction. Indeed an incredible voice ❤
Saw Sugarland in concert a few years back. Holy cow, she sounds EXACTLY the same live as she does recorded. Jennifer Nettles has one of the best live voices around. :micdrop:
truth.... her concert was awesome. saw her in charleston wv. she does sound the same live and puts her heart and soul into her live performances . jennifer nettles the best 💯...... she has a lot of great songs.... she writes most of her songs and co writes the rest. listen to her first song baby girl. it’s about when she first got started. love her.......
She's definitely the side chick. In the first stanza, she says "you'll get another call from home and you'll be gone." I love how she turns it around at the end. Loved your reaction. Thank you! 🙂
Lady Antebellum is another amazing country band you might want to check out. Their song/video, 'Need You Now', is fantastic and was filmed in Toronto. I actually saw them live in Toronto in 2013 at a free concert and that's when I found out where it had been filmed ( a lot of free concerts in our city at that time & way back when), yes we're that lucky up here 😉
The singer's name is Jennifer Nettles and was inspired by Reba's 1986 hit "Whoever Is In New England" a song about cheating. Nettles wrote this song from the perspective of being the mistress or side chic. The guitarist is Kristian Bush who also sings but obviously did not for this video. It has won multiple awards including Best Country Performance by a duo, Best Country Song and Song of the Year at the 2008 CMT awards show. Even though Nettles did not experience the story the song is telling the emotion is real as she has been asked about it and said that she was just thinking about the song and how it is a song about loss. They originally recorded 3 versions but wanted this version as they felt it did the song the most justice. They also didn't think it would make it onto the radio as it was a 5 minute acoustic song but we can see how that turned out.
That's what she said at first because her personal issues weren't settled yet I guess but she later came out and said that she had fairly recently discovered that her then husband was being unfaithful. So it hit really close to home. Director kept offering to do another take but she said no. She couldn't handle doing it over and over. One take baby. Let the pain stay in the video because it's real.
I remember the first time I heard this song and watched the video. I wanted to reach through the screen and hug her. true emotion and no acting in this video.
For an Anniversary/ Birthday gift, my husband got 2nd row center seats for a Willy Nelson concert. I swear she was sitting right in front of us. I was like... you're Jennifer Nettles, she smiled and we hung out and watched the show. 😂😘😜
This a very emotional song for to sing the director wanted to cut and give her some time to recover but her partner Kristian Bush no let her sing with out a break to make it feel more real Made the video better
The crazy thing that in real life she was actually going through a divorce due to the fact that her husband had been carrying on an affair with her friend. The emotions while recording this and putting herself in the shoes of the other woman were raw and real.
Not true at all, I watched a whole interview Jennifer gave and she said this didn’t apply to her life at all but she fell in love with the song…she was going through a divorce but infidelity played no part
@@tiacalhoun3841People had rather believe the lie for some reason, even though Jennifer has said for years that this song has nothing to do with her divorce/life. Reality just doesn't have enough drama for some people.
Now that you've heard the side chic anthem, check out Reba's Does he love you. The wife's anthem. I know you like live performances but watch her video. The ending is epic! 😊
There are about 5 different secondary singers for this song (Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson, Martina McBride, etc.) Do the original Linda Davis version. You're welcome.
Jennifer Nettles wrote this song because she wanted to write a song from the "other woman's" point of view. On the day they went to record it, she really did become overwhelmed with emotion to the point where Kristian Bush had recording stop, ordered everyone out of the studio and only wanted Jennifer and him to capture the emotion. I still can't believe that almost every talent show rejected Jennifer to be a part of their competition. Not only is she a great song writer, she is a great singer and the "cherry on top," they are both extremely nice people to their fans
False, Jennifer wrote it in response to Reba McEntire's song Whoever's in New England. Her, now ex husband, and her were going through their divorce when she recorded the video, but their divorce wasn't due to cheating.
I love this band. I saw Sugarland live and Jennifer Nettles is amazing! They have a don't called "Down in Mississippi (and up to no good)" that is so much fun! I'd love to see you react to that song!
I love watching people react to this. Jennifer is one of the best artists, singers, songwriters, and performers of our time. Incredibly talented and cool person.
Jennifer Nettles! What a voice! What a God given talent! Jennifer and Darius Rucker have a fairly recent duet together "Never Been Over"! Been with my husband 30 plus years and this has become our song! I think you would appreciate it BP as in a previous reaction you talked about you and your wife being together 10 years! Loved your reaction and you nailed it!
Jennifer Nettles has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. She does a duet with Bon Jovi. It was one of my son and mine favorite song. "Who says you can't go home" is the title.
As many times as I have heard this song and watched the video, it still chokes me up. Sugarland has many songs out there you should check out. Side note she played Dolly Parton's mom in the different movies about Dolly's life. Rick Schroeder plays her father. He is better known from Silver Spoons.
Her guitar player is Christian Bush, the other part of Sugarland.Hes from the maga Bush family (Bush's Beans enpire etc) he didn't want to go into the family business,he wanted to be a musician.Hes very good too!
He also wanted to stop the video when she broke down. Didn't want to put her through it, which is why he looks like he could tear someone's head off through most the song. Jennifer made them let her finish.
I really appreciate your videos... I'm 45% deaf... Growing up I didn't have gerat hearing aids.. I'm 42 right now... My grandparents always listened to country music and I really enjoyed it. Then again I couldn't understand anything really what they were saying.. There was no lyrics online and if there was, well I wasn't good at computers back then. I still to this day will wonder what people are singing about but I always forget "oh yea google has the lyrics". But last night I been listening to your shows.. I stayed up all night listening. I recently installed a sound booster for my PC... and I am hearing songs for the first time again myself the correct way, but even then I still miss a word that changes the whole meaning... Imagin songs you known your whole life weren't even the real words~! One song I really enjoyed was "don't take the girl." I loved that song when I was little because I didn't like girls. lol When I finally got updated hearing aids that song made me cry lol. Like whaaaat? There's also another song I really enjoy and love has nothing to do with hearing the words wrong and getting another meaning... but you should check out "Been watching you" By Rodney Atkins.
She wrote this song because of her first husband who found comfort in the arms of another. As a "former" song writer and musician, I can understand it because the same betrayal happened to me. Music and songs have a profound effect or impact on others than we know at times.
I put this one up there with Brooks&Dunn “Believe” as far as the level of emotion goes…even with the topics being very different. Both are amazing performances.
Love love Sugarland, lead singer Jennifer Nettles put so much emotion in everything she sings and yes she could sing from the phone book, dictionary you name it. Gives great concerts also has many upbeat songs that were great hits.
Christian and Jennifer are quite the act, yeah? As a former side chick (hey, sometimes a silver-tongued devil weaves a spell, and a lonely girl is sometimes spellbound) I appreciate that you didn't jump and judge her harshly. The side chick anthem, I like that. Jennifer performed the snot out of that song, but then, she always does.
She’s an amazing talent all around. This was not acting. They have some great hits. “baby girl” is my fav. It reminds me of how great things my daughter has accomplished in her life. It’s a special song to me.
Jennifer Nettles won a Grammy for writing this song and Sugarland won a Grammy for the recording. And it really doesn't matter whether she was the sidepiece or not. Jennifer has an incredible voice and Sugarland is one of the best concert bands I've ever seen. Most of their music is upbeat and fun. You should react to the official video of their song "Down in Mississippi (and Up To No Good)." It'll make you smile. Guaranteed.
No freind, Jennifer wrote this after her husband had an affair with her best friend. Jennifer was the wife and not the “sidepiece” which makes the song all the more heartbreaking and the fact that Jennifer could write it from the “other woman’s” perspective and then perform it, even more meaningful and emotional 😢
Firstly, I NEVER expected you to react to this, but so glad you did. Your reaction when you realized she was the other woman was priceless. It's a very empowering song starting when she says, "I'm up off my knees." She finally has had enough of being the side chick and doesn't want to have to put up with it anymore. She wrote the song from the other woman's perspective since that had never been told in a song before. Unfortunately, she she lived the song in real life since her husband cheated on her with another woman. The video was filmed the day her divorce became final, so the emotions are as real as you can get. The video was shot in a very minimum number of takes. The director wanted at least one more take and the guitar player stepped in and said basically, "We're done here. You've got what you need. I wont let you put her through this again." Jennifer Nettles is the singer, and Christian Bush is the guitar player. Her voice is so pure and raw, one of the best voices in any genre of music.
Was up for a Grammy. FYI Jennifer Nettles also did a run a few years ago as the star in the Broadway Musical the Waitress on Broadway!! She’s got chops. And last year she hosted a reality TV series in prime time on Fox.
This was written by her from the perspective of the "other woman" and no, Jennifer Nettles didn't go through this. Jennifer said she wrote this song inspired by a song with a similar subject. That song was "Whoever's In New England" by Reba McIntire.
Yes she was singing for the side chick.... people say she deserved it...but guys do not always devulge they are married.... best song cause in the end she said. ...do not come over her anymore and reclaimed her self respect❤love it!
I was the one that recommended that you review this song, I'm so glad you did! She has either been through this or deserves an oscar for her acting ability!! The video was absolutely perfect, she needed the starkness of the video to really drive home the emotion and it really showcases her vooice!
Glad you found Sugarland..you need to do a deep dive with them...Jennifer Nettles voice can't be matched...seen her up close in concert and she sounds the same as here...God blessed her with some pipes...if you ever get the chance look up Jennifer singing Oh Holy Night...you will not be disappointed... Also try out Girl Crush by Little Big Town...I would love to see you dissect that one...
Sugarland does an amazing live version of Brooks and Dunn’s Red Dirt Road at a Tribute event, amazing vocals from Jennifer and you also get to hear Christian (the guitar player) sing!
Finally, welcome to Sugarland. Jennifer Netyles has one of the most effortlessly powerful voices in the industry. And so clear. She is amazing! Her and Lady Gaga did a live duet on one of the awards show that was amazing. And as usual, I commented before watching your reaction. 🤷🏻♂️
She's a good actress as well. She played dolly parton's mom in the movie Coat of Many Colors. Excellent movie that i highly recommend. This song was my anthem for 20 yrs. I cried watching it just now. Sucks being lied to and used.
This song always brings me tears. She is the side chic as you call it. Her vocals are always on point. They have happy songs too! As a teenager I was in this position and it was devastating. I can say I learned about his marriage after I was in it. I also learned everyone does have strong emotional turmoil in the situation and I find fault with the person who is supposed to be in a committed relationship if the other people don't know.
NO other woman has this voice...LOVE the message of empowerment for women in this song ... The reasons she's so emotional is born out of her own personal struggle at the time.... and a breakup ... Love this ..
I love how she's begging in the beginning for him to stay. But she finds her strength and tells him he cant give what she needs and to go away at the end!
Being in the military for over 26 years, I've seen first-hand how situations like this can happen, not o ly with military members that are away for months at a time, but any profession that extended travel amy be necessary. And this isn't one-sided. Both men and women have been affected by this, where once a "side" relationship is started, it may be many months before they find out that the person has become attached to is married.
She did this without makeup on to be stripped down bare-faced for authenticity. What a performance! She is the side chick and at the end she's telling him to stay with his wife, not her.
The year this came out, it was voted as the best music duo song of the year which bumped Brooks & Doun out of first place which they had won for the previous 17 years .
Bro you're Reaction to this song is Priceless, you thought she was the wife and not the lover. You have a new follower. Plus if you watched Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors movie, she is the one that plays Dolly's mom in it to.
In the song she is speaking from the point of view of the other woman. In reality she had discovered her husband and best friend had been having an adulterous affair. That is why she is so heartbroken and emotional. No acting just real life.
Takes a strong woman to take her pain and turn it into something completely different

I so love her voice. Always like Sugar land. I hate we don't hear much of them anymore
Most times, they just don't tell the damn truth.
I love Jennifer Nettles. Greatest female country singer of all time.
Jennifer is underrated.
This song made me watch more. “Baby Girl” made me fall in love with her art. “Stuck Like Glue” made me a huge fan and I adore her ❤
The whole 'side-chick' thing is something I'd never even thought of 'til you mentioned it. It's a beautiful song, and damn, what a voice!!!!!!!
I absolutely luv how you work songs out .. muchos respect ..
She has such a unique and beautiful voice.
This song is truly amazing. Jennifer can certainly sing a heartfelt song.❤️✌🏻🎶
Unbelievable emotion, crying and not singing at one point...crazy. Great reaction!
She can belt a toon. Always great. Voice is killer.
This IS the side chick national anthem!!! Love your channel bro
She’s an amazing talent all around. This was not acting. They have some great hits. “baby girl” is my fav. It reminds me of how great things my daughter has accomplished in her life. It’s a special song to me.
Enjoying your reactions to country music. I grew up quite eclectic, listening to rap and country.
One of my favorite country songs! Amazing voice! So emotional! Her name is Jennifer Nettles. She is also an actress.
The look on your face when you figured it out 😅 I laughed out loud.
I truly love Jennifer nettles! She’s incredible!
Was up for a Grammy. FYI Jennifer Nettles also did a run a few years ago as the star in the Broadway Musical the Waitress on Broadway!! She’s got chops. And last year she hosted a reality TV series in prime time on Fox.
She's a great singer and I love all she sings!❤❤
Gotta listen to Reba McEntire - "Does He Love You"
And makee sure it's "Does he love you" with Dolly.

You nailed it! Great song and great reaction!! 🤓🤠👊🏼
Love their songs Want To, and Nightswimming/Joey and Baby Girl
The only time I've watched this video and cried because I'm laughing. Thanks BP!! A smile on this face today! Your reactions... PRICELESS!!
The boy's are back in town. Great song. I love Jennifer
This is the one I have been waiting for you to do!!! This song is so emotional! Thanks for the reaction!
Epically good on the MTV/CMT (?) Show Crossroads. IIRC she was performing w/Bon Jovi
Band and singer well worth listening to more of. Love her !!❤.
She's a good actress as well. She played dolly parton's mom in the movie Coat of Many Colors. Excellent movie that i highly recommend. This song was my anthem for 20 yrs. I cried watching it just now. Sucks being lied to and used.
Great reaction! Jennifer is mega talented, I waited for your expression when you realized she was singing as the other woman, well worth the wait!
Her real name is Jennifer Nettles. When this song came out, they won video of the year!!
General Hospital is still on. I've been watching for over 35 years. Love the drama! 😎👍
Love the song!! I played all the time.
Jennifer Nettles has an incredible voice and this song is so powerful.
I also just LOVE the tone on that guitar. Great sound.
This song was released in September 2007 and won the 2008 Grammy for Best Country Song
😂😂😂 She can probably cook too, I literally laughed out loud!!!! ❤
She did this without makeup on to be stripped down bare-faced for authenticity. What a performance! She is the side chick and at the end she's telling him to stay with his wife, not her.
Jennifer Nettles has a beautiful voice. But again, it is country, so it is truly from her heart.. You should listen to more of Sugarland songs
i have been waiting for you to react to this! Sugarland is awesome!
Love the END! Wow she changed it all around when your thinking about leaving her bed for mine just STAY my first time hearing this too wow very deep!
The year this came out, it was voted as the best music duo song of the year which bumped Brooks & Doun out of first place which they had won for the previous 17 years .
been there this song gets me every time
Great duo. Stuck like Glue is a great song and hilarious video by them
I've never been a Sugarland fan, but I like this song. I think this is the best she's ever sounded vocally.
Bro you're Reaction to this song is Priceless, you thought she was the wife and not the lover. You have a new follower. Plus if you watched Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors movie, she is the one that plays Dolly's mom in it to.
When u finally got it I laughed to hard...is she the side chick? Hahah
This song breaks my heart everytime I hear it. She is awesome.
