I waited faithfully, at home, for my soldier/pilot, to return home when he went to Vietnam. I prayed the whole time and he returned, thank God🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. He's been the only one for me our whole lives. We just passed our 61st anniversary in July!!! He's still the only one for me, ever and I have never stopped loving him. He told me that he didn't know what he'd have done if he hadn't had me waiting for him at home with our little baby girl. They don't say war is hell, for no reason.
I've never seen this video before--always have listened to it, since we have it and I've cried every time I've heard it, but this video just tore me up and finished me off even more!

Because of that line I've started saying that all of us are commiting suic... The only difference is our weapon of choice. Some people end it quick and others draw it out over a lifetime. Think about it. Everyone knows smoking is bad for you and can kill you but there are those continuing to smoke. Their death will take years but they chose that method to die. Others choose food as a weapon. There's also reckless driving, dangerous jobs, drugs, walking in unsafe areas and playing with venomous snakes. We all do something that takes the risk of death. Playing with fire and our lives. No one will live forever but most of us choose when and how we will die.

@@jamesenglebert9149He Didn't Have To Be really hits home for me because my Dad chose me. I was living in an orphanage and at 18 I was aged out of the home. Still a ward of the state waiting to graduate. I needed to move in with a foster family and my Dad and Mom said yes. I'm 54 now. Dad is 12 years older then me and mom is just 10 years older. People find it weird that I call them mom and dad because of the age difference. I'm still old enough to remember my birth parents. I was 7 when we were taken away from them. Birth mom used whiskey as her method of dying. Birth father was scum of the earth. My foster parents have been my mom and dad much longer than my birth parents were. It's been 35 years since I moved in with them. They have 6 children of their own but I'm always the big brother to them. They didn't have to be my mom and dad but they chose me. I gave Dad a Brad Paisley CD one year for his birthday. It had that song on it. As he listened to that song I saw tears rolling down his cheek.

The days of real men don’t cry should be long gone but sadly not yet. Two of my Aunts and their families lived right there across from Norfolk and those summers there were so much a part of my young life. We could see the Navy planes hauling big targets behind them for maneuvers . My brother went into port there for a short leave and he came over to NN to see the family and I was heading back to my gramma's house and there was a Sailor walking up the sidewalk in front of me in his white uniform. I just saw this in my feed, and I know that at four days later, it's not likely that you'll see this comment, but I want to leave it anyway in hopes that you do. I can't begin to explain how much it means to me that you reacted to this. This was almost my story in reverse. In June of 2009, I was in the navy and my fiancée and I split after ten years together, since high school. I broke things off with her because we had different life goals - I wanted kids, and she wanted tubal litigation. The night we separated, she intentionally OD'd on a cocktail of OTC meds - she had never used in her life. Her last journal entry had a photo of me and the words "Aurelia cannot live without her other half." I quickly deteriorated over the next few months. In October of 2009, I put a shotgun in my mouth and had my thumb on the trigger. The only thing I could think about was how I felt when her sister called me to tell me they found her face down in her bed. I didn't know what I could do, but I knew I couldn't let all of our friends and family get that phone call again. So I put the gun away, drove to base, and asked to be put on suicide watch. I lost my career in the navy, but I got the help I needed.
The first time I heard this song was in February of 2018. I was driving alone through Death Valley on a photography trek and it came up on my streaming app. In the first verse, where Paisley sings "He put the bottle to his head and pulled the trigger," I had to pull off the side of the road to process what I was feeling and finish the song. When Krauss sings "the rumors flew, but no one knew how much she blamed herself," I lost it. I sat there all alone, in the middle of the desert, bawling my eyes out. Let me tell you, Brother, that I cannot even begin to describe how true those words ring. I didn't give her those pills, I didn't make her swallow them, and it doesn't matter how many times someone else tells you it's not your fault. When someone else takes their own life because of a choice or decision you made, you can't help but take that personally and own that, and it will devour and consume your soul if you let it.
Fifteen years later now, I'm in a much better place, and I find myself wanting to share my story as much as I can in the hopes that someone else can see me as an example that things do get better and time does heal all wounds. Even still, there are times that intrusive thoughts creep in and I can't help but wonder how far back I would have to turn the clock the save her life, and I can't help but think 1999, and playing hooky on the night I would have met her the first time. But, I know that's not possible, so all I can do is hope to help others, and let people know that this song is as real as it gets.
Thank you again for such an honest and emotionally vulnerable review.

@@cvabuck5489 I truly understand what you’re feeling and why. My first husband literally drank himself to death after I left him, taking our children. He was already a functional alcoholic, but managed to keep it under control most of the time when we were married. After I left, he flat out told me he didn’t have to rein himself in anymore. He died in three years from cirrhosis of the liver. The guilt I still feel after 21 years is something I have had to learn to live with. I just want you to know you are not alone. It took me ages to realize I was allowed to be happy and not keep punishing myself for prioritizing myself and our children. Keep your head up. Live your life, find your happiness. God bless you.

My wife and I split just before a during my 9th deployment. This song became a staple. I wish I could've seen it as a warning, instead of wallowing in my misery and trying to end myself through abuse and alcohol. Not a single time did I listen with a dry eye. Four years later, i was struck by lightning, while riding my motorcycle home from work and it was the catalyst for us getting back together and working our stuff out. Realizing, in that hospital bed, that the only thing and person I wanted was her. Still- to this day, I can't get through it without a tear. I'm so grateful that God used what He did to bring us back together.

Or re-kindle the relationship. I think the way Castaway (Tom Hanks) did it was awesome. He comes back. She's "moved on". But she, with empathy, goes with him.. which allows him to realize that he's not in the same place either. And they say good bye. Just as heart breaking, but a much better result and message!

Not all women waited. The "Dear John" breakup letter became known during WW2.

My great uncle was shot down in WWII and a POW for 6 months, with another 6 months of the Army trying to feed him enough to get his strength back. I don't know if his wife was told when they found him, but she had moved on , thinking he was dead.

Brad Paisley also did "Don't Laugh at Me" give it a listen, it will give you a different perspective on the differences in people, being blind it has a special meaning for me. He is a great storyteller

Actually Mark Wills did "Don't Laugh At Me". That's one of my favorites because I was the little girl who had braces.

@@michelleraborn6886 I love Mark Wills, Don't Laugh at Me is my favorite of his songs. I am the blind girl. The song covers a lot of disabilities, and a subject that I feel should be spotlighted. I like when artists bring their spotlight to some of the subjects that need to be talked about and prejudices put to bed. Dolly Parton "Coat of Many Colors" is another one.

@dianamccants7047 yes. I feel like they should highlight more how some kids don't "fit in" and how it can affect them as they're growing up. I also had glasses at the same time I had braces. Back n the 80s, that was pretty much Catnip for the bullies

@@michelleraborn6886 I grew up in the 50's - 60's and wore glasses as well. I went blind later in life,, retrained and taught 800 operators to support my kids. Back then they called it teasing but it was bullying. You the subjects that are difficult to talk about and stand up against are always good things to promote.☺
