The emotions come though on this song because she was cheated on by her husband, and decided to write this song from the mistresses perspective to help her deal with it. If you watch the video version you'll see real emotion and tears
I love your commentary....but you talked over the most important part! Verse 1 she wants the husband to leave the wife, verse 2 she realized she was being used, verse 3 she told him to stay with his wife because she was done. One of the most beautiful and thought provoking songs Ive ever heard.
You should watch the official video. While the were filming, she broke down crying, 3 times. The director was about to ask for a 4th take, until he looked at her and saw she was a basket case. He called it off and the edited together what they had. It will tear your heart out.
Exactly, although it wasn't the director that stopped filming it was her guitarist and friend Kristian Merrill Bush. This is one song that the official video is a must watch.
Yes, when they were recording the original video. She broke down so bad.Because this is a personal song for her and her partner.Christian refused to let them record it again because it was so hard on her
They never stopped per se, she wanted to finish it and she did. CMT interviewed them about the song. She explained where she got the idea of it from, and Bush talked about when they recorded the video.
At the end she told him to stay with his wife!! Lyrics - I don’t have to live this way, so the next time you want to leave her bed for mine, baby why don’t you stay. Meaning stay away. She also did this from the mistresses point of view. while she had just been cheated on by her husband. And she won a Grammy for the song. Watch video please❤
She was going through a divorce at this time. For the reason she's singing about except she was the wife. She also played dolly partons mom in the movie coat of many colors about dollys childhood
No the song was inspired by Reba's song "Whoever's in New England." The part you got right is the part about the song being sung in the viewpoint of the mistress. Do the research darlin. I've known this since it came out.😊
@@deannatreat6819You are absolutely right, because this song was written four years before it was released so it clearly wasn't about her own marriage/divorce. But practically everyone wants to believe it is her personal story.

The end of the song is saying to the man to stay with his wife. She doesn’t want to live that way anymore. So the next time he thinks about leaving his wife’s bed for her she’s telling him to stay where he’s at stay in the bed with his wife. She’s no longer available.
As many have said.. you kinda missed in the last verse where she gains the courage to leave the relationship and tells the man to just STAY with his wife because she is done. I have seen a lot of reactions to this song and many of them have a similar reaction. They can't get past that it is sung from the mistresses point of view. Which is understandable. But in the second verse she talks about all of the lies she was told. While she knew he was married, he likely told her things like how his marriage was basically over and he no longer loved his wife. She believed all the lies, making her as much of a victim as the wife. She didn't see herself as a homewrecker but rather as a woman saving the man she loved from a horrible marriage. It is a lot to take in, which is why she still basically begs him in verse 2 to stay with her. Once she realizes the truth we get the 3rd verse. She is "up off my knees" and standing on her own. She realizes she is better than this.
Jennifer Nettles needs to be in the big leagues like Aretha, Celine, Whitney, etc. People sleep on her way too much. I want to hear her name in that list.
You talked right over the words at the end. She told him to stay away! That she was over the relationship because he wasn't giving her what she needed.

Jennifer Nettles wanted to do the song in the view point of the mistress...it was inspired by the song "Whoever's In New England." Nettles has also said she has never lived the storyline.

Jennifer Nettles is simply one of the best vocalists I've heard in years. Great technique and a masterful understanding of her tone, placement, and sense of the song. Love that this song didn't get overproduced and they just let Christian's guitar back it with a little organ in the sound as well. Good choices all around.
Loved your reaction and love the new 'do! And kudos to you--you're one of the few reactors to get that she's the mistress right from the jump. But you missed the flip. At the end, she's telling him to stay with his wife, not with her. Love this song. 🙂
I’ve never been in this position, but I cry almost every time I hear this song. Also the guy in the group is Kristian Bush (as in Bush’s baked beans$$$)
This song is the wife speaking to the husband. She eventually gives in the fact that indeed that he's lying. She eventually tells him to leave and go to the other woman.
She wrote this song in the midst of divorcing her husband who cheated on her. Instead of singing it from her perspective of the wife she wrote it from the perspective of the mistress.
I absolutely love your reaction to this song. Mine is the same. I want to hate it because we do not love the other woman crying like she's been wronged. But at the same to you can't deny it's a beautiful song. And the journey to self love at the end is great.

This is greatness!
Hope you have some sniffle rags ready Britt.
Aye!! You were too busy snapping those fingers and that head swaying that you missed it lol! I guess this video will show if you go back and read comments :)
Britt. You pissed a lot of people off because instead of listening to the words you were talking over it. The last verse she tells him next time you want to leave her bed for mine , why don’t you stay …she was saying stay with her I am done being the other woman. And get rid of the freaking filter covering the video !!!
True story! This happened to her but she was the wife! She wrote this song from the mistress side!!!! So clever! Love her! 💜🩵
Sometimes, you need to stop talking and listen. The song will answer questions for you.
"Girl Crush", by Little Big Town. Great song!
Awww u talked through the change up
You’ve just heard one of the top 5 women vocalists alive today.
Jennifer Nettles is simply one of the best vocalists I've heard in years. Great technique and a masterful understanding of her tone, placement, and sense of the song. Love that this song didn't get overproduced and they just let Christian's guitar back it with a little organ in the sound as well. Good choices all around.
You really should watch the official video. So much genuine emotion. And sung from a real life situation.
You started talking at wrong time, pay attention to song and just be quite.... you missed the best part, just yapping!!! But I do like your reactions.
Loved your reaction and love the new 'do! And kudos to you--you're one of the few reactors to get that she's the mistress right from the jump. But you missed the flip. At the end, she's telling him to stay with his wife, not with her. Love this song. 🙂
At the end, she told him to stay...with his wife.
You missed it. She's telling him to stay with his wife. You got too emotionally involved 😂
Sometimes it’s better to be quiet and listen to the song-I’ve noticed u miss lines that way
I’ve never been in this position, but I cry almost every time I hear this song.
Also the guy in the group is Kristian Bush (as in Bush’s baked beans$$$)
If you ever need a good cry, watch the studio version of this song. BTW at Christmas time you need to catch her version of O Holy Night.
I love your take on this 1 -
Britt have you seen the Carol Burnett show bust ups and bloopers? You'll love them! I promise!
Fun fact she acts also she played Dollys mama in the movie Coat of Many Colors
This song is the wife speaking to the husband. She eventually gives in the fact that indeed that he's lying. She eventually tells him to leave and go to the other woman.
This song she wrote about her 1st 😊husband and one of her friends he was seeing
before this song I dont think i ever couldve believed i would found myself feeling for the "other woman" and then this song rips your heart out
That isn't Sweat it's a tear! She is really into singing this song with her Heart!
