I believe in an interview Brad Pitt said to him the movie is about how important and valuable freedom is. How awful it is to have it taken away. That's an intelligent way of looking at it I think.

In my opinion 12YAS was a very very good movie but last years Django Unchained was much better when I think of movies about slavery! "Gravity" should have won! It is masterfully directed and Sandra Bullock is amazing! This movie revolutionized the world of visual effects and I think this will be more remembered! (I love the claustrophobic soundtrack from Steven Price!) and 12 Years a Slave for the powerful, beautiful and at the same time sad and tragic story. Anyway, both movies, in my opinion, will remain as classics and masterpieces to the next generations! :D

watched it on 2019, avoided it for all these years because I wasn't emotionally ready. It was worth saving all those tears. This movie is a masterpiece. It deserves much more than an Oscar really.

The actors had put a lot of effort into their acting. The cinema photography is excellent. Yes the story is compellingly shocking and very sad. But we cannot forget that this film is dedicated to teach people about historical slavery and all kinds of slavery that still exists today.

Of the nominated movies, 12 Years a Slave was by far the most powerful. Not the most perfect, though, which I felt was American Hustle. But for sheer emotional force, no other movie came close to Slave this year.

Of the nominated movies, 12 Years a Slave was by far the most powerful. Not the most perfect, though, which I felt was American Hustle. But for sheer emotional force, no other movie came close to Slave this year.
You had me until you mentioned that boring drivel that was "American Hustle." Such a garbage movie that thrives on star power more than anything else. Without Amy Adams' great acting, I would have fallen asleep.

I have since "slave movies" before but this film is based on a true story and depicts the incredible harshest of slavery....a stark realty some people on this site have a hard time in dealing with!
