  • WHY YOU CANT ROTATE IN THE DOWNSWING.
    In this video we discuss 3 moves that you MUST AVOID if you want to rotate in the downswing! Having a fluid uninterrupted rotational move in the downswing isn’t as straight forward as it may seem. There NEEDS to be certain variables in place to allow your body to rotate.
    Get these 3 vairables in place and start ROTATING in the downswing!

    Thankyou , I didnt realise how much more vertical my swing was getting and making it more difficult to rotate as much (now 76 years old) as I used to .This resulted foe me with too many pulled shots.I thought it was just old age ,but some of my golf mates had no problem.I can tell even swinging in doors how much easier it is and can't wait to try it out.

    This vidéo is great. I love the fact that you don't just say don't do that but you explain the consequences. I think I ve got the vertical shaft issue ending with a huge slice when I hit it hard. I knew I was not trurning enough but did not put the finger on the reason !!! I thought it was because of some shoulders tilt, but the shoulder tilt it self might be because of the vertical shaft !!! I will definitely check. THANKS 👍👍👍

    I think the biggest 'rotation blocker' is pulling/driving with the arms. Once u pull with the arms, (linear force) you end up totally closed off. From there, u have no choice but to goat hump, stand up and throw angles. Once you understand how the club tumbles out towards the ball, the swing feels almost horizontal and rotation just happens. Rotation is a result, not an effort.

    I've always been guilty of the steep downswing. I just didn't realize it until now. Having said that is so hard to do this move of dropping the club behind me. I noticed it helped me rotate and my ball strike was more forward shaft lean but I'm pushing the ball. I made need a stronger right hand grip

    Another great video Jonothan! I can rotate so well in a practice swing and then lose depth in the actual swing (I have the practice swing of a tour pro haha! as many of my low hcp friends have said). This is a great reminder to get the 'feels' correct in the takeaway. Rotation, rotation, rotation = easier golf. Keep up the good work

    Do you have a video on getting into a position at the top of the swing that sets you up with good width and square clubface? The more I learn about the golfswing the more I see that getting things right earlier in the swing gives you the best chance of a solid shot......

  • @guybowyer8188
    @guybowyer8188 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great explanation, thank you!! I may be wrong but I think there may be a 4th issue, which is trying to straighten the trailing, or dominant arm in the down swing, I've hand that problem for years. I've recently found keeping the trailing arm tucked in helps flatten the down swing and allows me to make a powerful turn into the ball with a neutral club face. Working well for now anyway!!

    I fight not to move towards the ball in the downswing. I've been told I need to fix it but it must have some useful purpose because if I want to hit serviceable golf shots, it's what I do. I like how you're going deeper into what is causing the lack of rotation. Have you been able to diagnose this using online lessons ie via video? If so, I'd like your help. Thanks.

    Wow...great video. At the top of my backswing, my left arm is not higher or lower than the right shoulder suggesting it is not upright backswing. I know I swing more up and down and maybe not so much deep. Still at impact : my hips did not rotate even I try and slight bent arms and a little early extension. Yes, my downswing is slight steep as well. What does it tell you that I need flatter backswing? If so, what do I need to do to get flatter swing? Thank you so much if you could give your thoughts.

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your shaft is steep in the downswing, that will be the best place to start working on improving. A shallow shaft in the downswing will enable your body to rotate 👍🏼

  • @martinhardman9288
    @martinhardman9288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cracking video. Assuming I get some depth and my clubface is square (I actually try to get it slightly closed at the top), is it a good idea to try to get some external rotation of the trail shoulder on the way down or do things just happen naturally? I know that everything is relative to my normal action but I don’t think I steepen it on the way down but still my bad shot is a push fade

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Martin! Absolutely, you can definitely feel some external trail shoulder movement to aid you with your shallowing move in transition. It’s a great move if you need the extra shallowing 👍🏼

    Hey man this was excellent! I had a real eureka moment with this "rotation" - you explained it so well. I ran out into the garden to try some swings at a training ball and I immediately understood how and where power comes from in the swing. I have always used my arms a lot in my swing and not much rotation. I could hit the ball a good distance, and fairly straight, but I was not consistent. I had a lesson with a pro many years ago and he said; "I used my hands well" - I wonder now if he was calling me a wanker" Hmmm
    I'm going to recommend your channel to all my golfing buddies.

    I think a good drill for people is to take a very strong grip, swing the club as flat as you can around your body, and then make the ball start right, or try to hit a cut(this will depend on ball position). You will have to rotate to keep from hitting it a mile low, left. Don't make this your normal swing. But, you have to go to extremes sometimes to get a certain "feel". Great video, bro!!!

    • @jchowngolf

    There is not a pro on tour that holds the right wrist angle through the hit as you are showing. They ALL fire the right hand through the hit. Why are you teaching this?

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They certainly do not all fire the right hand through the ball. Back in the 90’s that would’ve been correct, but they had to fire the right hand to square up the toe up open club face that was taught. Look at players like Alex Noren, Tiger woods and Collin Morikawa. Very inward hand path release patterns. No need to stop the body from turning to square up the face with the right hand anymore

    Why rotate - your body is not designed for it - your body is designed for up and down motions and your limited ability to rotate can support that - so name all the muscle groups designed to give your body rotational speed and power - and your spine hates rotation as a source of speed and power - so why rotate
