  • GOLF BALL FIRST CONTACT EVERY TIME!
    In this video, we look at a drill that will immediately clean up your poor ball striking!
    This drill teaches you how to physically move your low point in the golf swing by shifting onto your lead side in the downswing. With enough practice with this drill, you will never struggle with ball first contact!

    OMG! This is a drill I did years ago with a pro I was seeing at the time for lessons, and I played my irons so well after it. Golf is amazing how you regress back to old habits thinking 'I've nailed this element of the swing' when in actual fact, you should endure and continue the drills. Another great video Jonathan, thanks for the reminder!

      Thanks Paul! That’s absolutely right, old habits will always creep back in! Glad you liked the video 👍🏼

      This is me. A few lessons, a few good rounds, and I’m convinced I’ve got the technique nailed down and totally engrained into my swing…then I start playing poorly and don’t know how to fix it

      How long did you do the drill for Paul?? Weeks at the range? Months? Did you hit maybe 10 balls like this then 1 normal? Cheers

    Absolutely fabulous drill! It gives you instant positive feedback about the proper position to make a solid, ball first strike! Thank you!

    Really good advice and very good using the zipper to visualise so you can do it properly.

    I’ve taken note of the right elbow staying close to right side so proper rotation can occur. This exercise will help me learn to do the lateral movement. The head is moving laterally slightly. But may still be just over the ball.

    I know that I hit my irons better when I shift my upper body forward like you said. My struggle has always been to reconcile this move with the “stay behind the ball” mantra. Thanks in advance.

    I never thought of trying this, will do it next time I play. It makes sense and can only help. For driver, I presume the same technique but the shirt zipper needs to remain about even or a few inches behind the ball so I can hit up on it. 😊

    How about your head. Does it move forward too . Thanks 🤩

    Excellent explanation, quick question: with the driver we stay back a bit more vs moving forward or do we move the zipper forward as well?

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks bud. The zipper will stay more back with driver to help an upward angle of attack 👍🏼

    Hello, I just came across this video and tried the drill. Great results! I do have a couple of questions....hope you are still monitoring this. (1) What do I do with a longer iron, like 5 or 6 iron? There's only so far forward that a person can place a ball (2) Is it possible to actually play like this? I'm just concerned that I'll go back to old habits once I stop the drill and actually play. Thanks. Excellent and interesting video.

    Would it help at setup to just move left a bit for right hand golfers instead of shifting?

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wouldn’t help no, as you’ll still need to shift forward even with the ball position further back 👍🏼

    wo deep should the divot be?

      @@jchowngolf sometimes in practice , i line up the ball in different spots on the face and it makes a huge difference. Lately been putting ball right on center of face rather than towards the toe of my fairway wood (7) and I’ve been crushing. I really dont know why but I’m getting magic results.

    I’ve done this drill for a while but still can’t take a divot after the ball. The ball flies dead straight but no divot. If you have any advice, I’d appreciate it. Love all your videos and subscribe d

      Thanks for the kind words! The problem could be anything from losing tilt early, to an overly shallow angle of attack

    Was wondering what in the world is a bush placed right in front of the mat in the first place?.

  • @freshtendrills5969

    I chunk, but to a layman it looks like a decent shot. But I'm all over the place with my distances. I can hit a 7 iron anywhere from 150 yrds, to 180. But the same goes for a 5 iron. It's just constant slight chunk. Ground then ball.

  • @philipchan1856
    @philipchan1856 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    But once the zipper in front of the of ball, the head might also which will lead to slice, no

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The zipper being in front of the ball doesn’t mean your head will be too, as we right side bend through impact, keeping the ball centred. The head moving past the ball won’t cause a slice as it doesn’t effect your club face orientation of swing path

    Just playing a little bit of devil's advocate here, shifting the upper body forward yes but careful not turning the trail shoulder too early. I will say in order to shift the upper body forward it starts from the ground up and for me it's the left knee that I feel is the first move. Some others may feel it's opening of the hip etc as everyone's feel is different and may not be the same as what actually happen.

    Could hardly hear what you had to say. A little less wind would be nice.
