And that's why his incredibly distinctive style works. Because you can't say "no one talks like this" because Aaron talks like this. It's unquestionably unique, but it's absolutely beautiful to listen to.
I read his West Wing script books. In it he elaborates a bit more on that conversation with Akiva Goldsman that led to The West Wing, and just reading him tell the story is so Sorkiny he even worked baseball references into it.

He's so spot on tho! I never watched Newsroom because it was exactly like he said! The hit scenes that flooded the internet, made the show seem so heavy handed leftist!

It was until Aaron left the show. I wish he had been able to finish it off himself. I have yet to be able to get through the seasons Aaron wasn’t writing the show.
@@PatrickTheGreat that's a shame, there are some really beautiful episodes in the later seasons, and yeah they took their time to find their feet and yes they have a different style and some choices are ones that I disagree with but I still think it's a solid show. I highly recommend watching The Supremes if you only watch one post-Sorkin episode. Glenn Close guest stars and is an absolute treat and it's my favourite episode of the entire series.

I like how he talks about writing characters as if they are pleading their case to God about why they deserve to be let into heaven. It’s a pretty neat approach.

Two of the most boring subject matters I can think of (baseball and economics), yet it's easily one of my favourite movies!

Same. Was also hoping to hear about Studio 360.
The writing credits for that movie are pretty muddy. It wasn't nearly as much of a solo effort as most of the other projects in the video, and they probably skipped over it because of that. Sad, because it is one of my favorite movies. Pro tip: baseball becomes much endlessly more entertaining when you get into pitching.
My guess for these type of videos is they do talk about all the career highlights, but edit together the best stories. Sometimes a fantastic script didn't have any interesting stories behind it.
I loved Moneyball. It opened up the game.
I see The Newsroom in a whole new way now, and understand why he was disappointed with it (although it’s one of my favorite shows of all time).

The Newsroom is one of my fav shows ever too. I just rewatched it tho and had different feelings that the first time (still love it tho) Second watch - i loved the character Don so much. He def became one of my fav characters. I couldnt understand why i disliked him the first time around. I found Mac to be whiney and was not happy with her even tho i loved her the first time around. And i thought Maggie was just a toxic friend and person.
Agreed rewatching it now and the Genoa plot is amazing

I saw The trial of the Chicago 7 a couple of weeks ago, and it was incredible! I truely recommend it!
Chicago 7 was an amazing movie! It was fascinating learning about this big part of history that was skipped in school! And incredibly relevant in 2020. One of the best movies I have seen in years!

Been looking for more movies like it but they just aren't out there. The final scene with the fallen soldiers chokes me up every time. Too bad it didn't actually go down like that irl.
I screamed every time the little timeline skipped over another great project. No Charlie Wilson's War, No Moneyball, even 30 Sunset. It's just amazing how even his lesser works are so rich in dialog and concept!
I really think Newsroom and West Wing are true masterpieces. For me these two stories are absolute fairy-tales about noble, honest, conscientious non-existing people in journalism and politics. But it's like a dream we all share to have politicians like Bartlett, Leo, Josh and journalists like Mack, Will, Don, Jim ets. No matter what Sorkin thinks about these shows big thank to him.
I've always said that some writers write the world as it is, and some writers write the world as it should be. Aaron Sorkin is the latter.
Crazy that he wasn't happy with the newsroom because that TV Show literally changed the trajectory of my life! I ended up doing a journalism degree just because of this man and his impeccable writing on that show 🤣 absolute legend!!
I'd imagine that your statement or people citing West Wing as motivation to go into politics would be fulfilling to Sorkin.
He is one of the best screenwriters in Hollywood.

Everything this man touches is gold. I understand why he feels dissatisfied about The Newsroom by premise because it aims to be perfect and the world just isn't. It is without doubt my favorite thing ever written.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is one of the best films in recent years. It really should've had a lot more recognition this award season.

Idk why, but his thing about being part of an audience was so moving. He’s just so passionate about movies and filmmaking, it almost made me cry.

West wing is up there, its incredibly good, but I prefer Studio 60 on the sunset strip

The West Wing is such an incredible show. I hate to focus on one part of his amazing career, but God dammit if I don't simply love that show. I swear to god I watch that show everyday until finish it again and then a little time passes and then I watch it again.

Sorkin gave the most incredible graduation speech at his alma mater, Syracuse University, in 2012.

Don't feel bad, if you enjoyed the show don't let anyone (even the author) interfere with that! I think the mixed response had an impact on him. It was the closest he came to reflecting current events and thus a risky project. Still good in my book.

It’s ironic how he describes The Newsroom was never a fluid job when he was writing it, however for me, it’s the best screenplay he had wrote.
Quite possibly our greatest screenwriter, and one of our greatest writers ever, period. And that includes Orson Welles.
It's interesting how casually he describes writing A Few Good Men, without any military background that he mentions. It's unusual for someone who hasn't been in that world to be able to write a story in it so confidently.
It was based on a story his sister told him who was JAG for a similar case (that didn't result in death).
He really fudged the logistics of a military court scenes, I wish he would’ve consulted with someone one those

Currently watching The West Wing. On episode 5 and shows like this aren't my usual type but I love it so far and the president's introduction in the pilot will probably be a moment I struggle to forget
Come on Vanity Fair. Get Aaron to talk about Moneyball. It is an important movie and one of his best.
The ending of this video was so strong. I love him and love watching him speak, but by the end I respect him more than anything else.

Hands down the best screenwriter of any generation. If he writes it, I watch it. A master of the English language. I loved the Newsroom. I watched it so many times wishing there was an anchor today that was half as smart as Will McEvoy.
While doing a rewatch of West Wing (my boyfriend had never seen it), I could not appreciate this video more. What a brilliant guy.

This man inspires me so much. Some of the dialogue he writes is way too formulated, but with reason. The exposition interwoven into some of the massive dialogue parts is extraordinary. He writes with incredible empathy in mind. I'll shake your hand one day, good sir.
Is it me, or does he sound super choked up when talking about The Newsroom and Chicago 7? An enthralling interview all the way through, though, and one of America's best modern writers across any art form.

Aaron Sorkin is all of us. I had no idea what Speilberg was talking about I was just saying hes to Steven. Araron is my all time favorite script writers. He writes smart movies that live and dieson the characters and what they say rather than special efffects and explosions. Last night I reailized that Chicago 7 was out on Netflix so that's next for me to watch.

I love this man, the way his mind works. I am a fan of anything he's done, and no doubt of the many things he will do next. Remarkable. My thanks always. Going to go watch the folks at the West Wing and cheer up in contrast to current WH madness.
I didn't know that The Trials of the Chicago 7 were an Aaron Sorkin movie and I actively searched for Aaron Sorkin movies on Netflix. I think that tonight I'm watching The Trials of the Chicago 7.
I just got into cinematography/filmmaking. And only have basics of basics knowledge but The Social Network was very well written, I was hyping alone for no apparent reason towards a non-action movie. I was swayed by the way it was produced while it included some of my personal favorite actors Andrew & Jessie, masterpiece.
Edit: even struck by Steve Jobs, Newsroom and Molly's game (before even knowing who Aaron was)
Aaron Sorkin and Charlie Kaufman. My two favorite screenwriters, I hope to see more of their art in either streaming services or theaters soon.

Aaron says that he didnt get the newsroom quite right that it was his pebble in his shoe ... it's my favourite tv show of all time, the characters, stories and of course monologues are the greatest.
The only time I'm interested in a movie script once it's annonced is if Sorkin is writing it, this man has created fantastic scripts and I look forward to whatever he creates next.

LEGEND!! Of course Sports Night was is first faced-paced, dialogue-dense, cerebral shows before West Wing, Newsroom or Studio 60.
