NEW Sony FX3 Firmware Update V3.0 // HOLY 💩 | SONY Firmware FX3/FX30 & FX6. FINALLY Shutter angle and more!!! | how to make a good cinematic video | MAJOR filmmaking tool | Major FIRMWARE UPDATE |
I didn’t notice how weird the skin tones looked until you showed the S-log3. Then I just couldn’t unsee it. The baked in looks make your skin very pale and there is a slight green shift.
Yeah its wild how we dont notice it until compared to what log does with it. A bit of information lost in those baked in looks
So, maybe that's not meant to be completely as 'baked in' as 'It is what it is' look like PP off i.e. regular Rec 709? S-Cinetone is somewhere between 709 and Log with it comes to contrast and DR. Highlights have softer roll off, shadows are a bit more raised compared to Rec 709. Not sure what this new 709tone is. Doesn't make any sense. And doesn't really look much different from S-Cinetone.
Basic CST is the only one that looks decent BUT ... Blackmagic's RAW and REC-709 leaves Sony in the dust.
not gonna argue with that
If so, why is the whole cinema world not using those ?
Ask yourself, and have a drink...
what app is that you used at 1:50 on your ipad?
DigiSlate
After a LOT of effort and failures, I finally learned how to get RAW to 709 using 3 or more nodes in DS. Grading is different for every shoot I do because all of them are different and have different challenges, or needs or looks. I guess if I wanted to use a baked in look from those choices, the Basic CST was best looking,
You are one of the best creators in TH-cam! Keep on doing this Brother.
Thank you!
The new 709 looks best to my eyes. I’m new to cinema so glad to see these changes to make color grading easier.
Also looking forward to seeing how Sony’s 709 compares to Fuji
Great video. Do you reccomend sony 2 alexa as a good upgrade over the standard cst convserions?
ever since ive been using the film emulation workflow i havent touched sony 2 alexa
@@JustinPhillip Are you talking about the Juan Melara film emulation workflow or something else?
is the Kodak d55 a lut or a picture profile? are you baking it in ? where can I get it !!
Its in Davinci Resolve as a LUT
@@JustinPhillip oh yeah I forgot resolve has luts , THANKS
Hi Justin, Kodak D55 is my vote. Looks the most natural with just the right amount of saturation. The 709 tone is too flat.
Thanks! I use Kodak D55 quite often
I think Scinetone! Thanks for this!👍
🙌🏼
Question. Is the color of the Cancelled sticker on your shirt red or orange? The Kodak D55 and 709Tone render it red, which looks very pleasing. Wondering if that is an accurate reflection of the actual color.
Yes it is red, good point
Great comparison. I did the firmware, however I don't see a PP listed as 709tone. Under color mode, I do see it, but not in gamma or as a profile like s-cinetone. . Am I missing something? What gamma did you use for the 709tone? Thanks
They suggest 709 ITU or S-Cinetone or Movie. Since it’s supposed to be another broadcast option similar to S-Cinetone, i set gamma to S-Cinetone.
@@JustinPhillip thank you so much for your reply. This has been helpful.
Newshooter opined 7 months ago it was for low contrast for broadcast TV. I can't help but notice the less saturation for R9.
It looks like s cine is slightly more saturated. It's so hard to tell with TH-cam compression. Which one did you like best between the two? Also just curious why do you want sound in s&q?
In other cameras, when shooting in overcrank or undercrank (which is what S&Q is) you are still shooting in 24p, so they’re able to record the audio in 24p. Nice for one man band shooters or documentaries where u dont have a sound guy. Still have that ambient audio no matter what.
Seems kn the shots we see the cinetone adds almost a glow to the highlights and overall image where as the 709 tone gives you a less cinematic palette. But if you add a light grade on the 709 time it's probably gonna give you a better image. Question is what are the base isos of this new picture profile in the fx30 and fx3
I figured it stayed the same since its based off of S-Cinetone
@@JustinPhillip I checked the film simulation video. I actually have the 8 free ones he gave out. Tried to use the discount code it said it's not good anymore. Definitely gonna save up the money and get the whole pack cause I wanna do more in camera looks
hey, i just updated my fx3 can you tell me the settings for 709tone? (which gamma and stuf) thanks 🙏
The settings? Its automatically in there, its a new added Profile.
On my iPhone s-cinetone looked a little redder in the skin and a bit more pushed in the highlights but about the same in the shadows as the Tone 709, which looked a little green in the skin tones. The Kodak 55 looked to me to have the most pleading balance between natural and pushed to me.
do you know what headroom is?
\
i dont care about your judgements
By the way, in the C80, you can now assign a dynamic shutter angle change to a stupid spinning wheel. That is, now when I enter a dark room, I can leave my ND filters alone and the viewer will not notice the jump in exposure, as well as he will not see the change of the ND filter right in front of his eyes.
What? I’d have to see that.
An answer to the Variable ND on Sony. Only Canon has 10 stops over 7...
s log 3 always has more magenta, how did you take it out?
Add green in color filter
I have a question, Justin. Somewhat off-spec. Have YOU ever seen or used a camera that displayed the full image circle in the viewfinder? Bet that would be a nice home project. non? : )
Do gFX cameras have that?
@@JustinPhillip Guess I'll take that as a hint, sir.
Hey you got your white balance right this time … which I take personal, like you personally made it look great JUST FOR ME. 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂👏🏼👏🏼
I prefer HLG over S-cinetone...you can control the dark and highlight better in contrasting lighting situations
Yeah i think that’ll be good for my RX100 VII 😆
Some are saying they have just removed the update due to an issue
Really?? I’ll have to check the forums
All the prior updates had issues from what the forums said
Surest way is to visit official Websites.
On Sony's one, it's all displayed for everyone to see.
Let's just wait... times is a healer.
And engineers are the drivers.
Thank you, i had been searching for this video..! ❤
Great!
Do you have a course on one man band cinematography? Maybe using Sony cameras.
maybe one day! For now just have the Patreon, which is really behind the scenes, conversational, and master classes (my style). www.patreon.com/justinphillip
I joke, I joke…I kid, I kid… is this an Eminem reference? I say this all the time. Great video! 🤘🏼
🤣 so many lyrics buried in my sub-conscious
I don't like that I can't record externally when using shutter angle on the FX3... makes no sense this bug.
Really?? That is no bueno
If you had the a7siii you could always set it and forget it with custom profiles ;)
You can do that with FX30 & FX3 as well
@@JustinPhillip is it a simple as clicking a wheel one stop or do you have to go into the menu…
I know maybe is imposible from the technical aspect but definitely would be nice to have the ability to record video in the 4x3 aspect ratio.
yea Open Gate would be nice in any sony camera that's for sure
@@JustinPhillipfor sure. I hope they can come with open gate in the future, great content wtb like and subscribe.
I actually really like the look of 709tone
I dont mind it either
Similar idea to Canon 709 look baked in. This is way better than s-Cinetone. Too red. You look like you were holding your breath for 60 seconds before the shot. This is better. A good start.
If you want a baked in look, why not just shoot PP Off rec 709? This new 709tone looks exactly the same as S-Cinetone. And S-Cinetone is somewhere between Log and Rec 709. So, not sure what Sony is going for exactly with this new '709 tone'.
4:02
Man, seeing all three side by side
I find S-Log 3 boosts reds too much, I have problems with it making skin look like rosacea so i have to spend time isolating a specific red hue to tone it down
709tone seems pretty muted which to me making S-Cinetone look more appealing
Yea i purposely didnt do any heavy grading on any of these. Wanted to see what it’s giving first
More to the point the Firmware update is a nightmare. The 5.0 update to my FX30 basically broke AF on all my lenses, adapted don't work at all, the Sony 18-105 sometimes works but defaults to MF at random times, the Viltrox 1.4 primes have been the best but still are on MF at camera start up. Also my playback is doing weird stuff... I don't know how to explain it but is seems to do something different every time I use it... and I need it to LiveU to one client so thats just annoying af.
whoa! can you go back to the previous version?
@@JustinPhillip Nope. There was someone who said they had a Sony service person do it for $700usd
I never liked s-cinetone, it added to much red to skintones and the reds were always off. Your shirt logo in the s-cinetone vs the new profile looks so much worse in s-cinetone. I guess ill.update my fx30 now!
🙌🏼
There’s definitely less tonal range on your skin in 709tone. I am not necessarily a fan. I mainly shoot s-log3 but if I had to use a 709 profile I still would go with Scinetone.
I agree with you there. S-Cinetone held the highlights a lot better
The basic cst and the Sony 2 Alexa looked better to me than the others, more so leaning towards the latter. The 709 tone in these examples looks worse than S-Cinetone but they both look worse latitude wise on your face than the slog transformed.
I 100% agree.
These images make me love my BM cameras even more!
😂😂
And their battery management system, too ?
Because, unless someone finds a way to power a camera with wood/hay/peat, those BMs have tremendous runtime limitations. Getting 20 minutes of 4K (DCI or UHD) from a battery... not fit for remote filming ! And you solve no problems by bringing along dozens of batteries : they are the heaviest components of today's camera gear.
For studio/indoor use, why not. But never further than 5 km from a mains power socket.
@@gillesmatheronpro I stopped reading after "battery management system"!
I don't think they would implement a s&q with audio because of that transformation of frame rates messes with the audio, when I want to shoot 4k120 with audio I do it in the normal video mode, I try to be intentional with it so when I go s&q I know 100% I'll never need any audio
RED & Blackmagic give you audio track when shooting overcrank. It could be done with S&Q because you're still on an actual 24p frame rate. that's how it works on the other cameras, the audio is in 24p
This is why i never use s&q. I always want to have some scratch audio just in case. Too bad, because s&q mode would be very convenient as i switch frame rates often.
They pulled the update.. 😮
Yea saw, too many bugs. I havent experienced anything yet. It was mainly because of the Sony A7RV
@@JustinPhillip what happened on the A7RV? Can’t find much info
I’m glad Sony added 709tone, but I prefer Cinetone and the standard Movie profiles. 709tone is not ready to deliver.
They marketed as such. Calling it a “low contrast broadcoast” option next to S-Cinetone
@@JustinPhillip I suppose when played back on televisions with default settings, it'll look good because TV's are so often shipped way oversaturated and contrasty.
Welp... maybe it was just because I was watching on my phone, but slog to ACES looked best to me. The 709tone looked particularly pale. I kind of liked the classic movie look but really, I guess if there was ANY time for grading I would just use s-log3 and slap a LUT on there and call it a day.
Log is best way to take advantage of 10bit that’s for sure
@@JustinPhillip For your corporate clients that you generally shoot S-Cinetone, are you literally giving them the SD card(s) out of camera and letting them deal with it?
Also, the strange thing is that Sony cameras with Picture Profiles have SO MUCH FLEXIBILITY in terms of things like color depth (aka density) and hue rotation, yet they are often derided for their colors. I know that I wish my Panasonic cameras would allow me to adjust those things, too.
I do wish they would just remove the crop over HDMI. Would've made losing my Autofocus capabilities with an adapter worth it 😤
Sony thought "how can we make our colors even more moody and muddy?".
😂
classic cinema is kind of cool... looks very 80's.
isn't 709tone just a rename? "Updates the name of the color mode Pro in the Picture Profile to 709tone"
Not sure about that. They originally released it on a previous camera as another option for straight to broadcast, which S-Cinetone is as well.
@@JustinPhillip the quote is find on the firmware update page
actually, shutter angle comes handy when in auto/semi auto mode, because the shutter speed will always stay at 180 degree. it's like shutter priority on steroids. now, who da hell is shooting auto? maybe news reporters
Yes, all those in a rush and with no second chance.
Imagine when shooting/filming on films, then you can have a tiny idea of what it means to do news coverage.
Ive recently filmed many ceremonies about 1945 Liberation... you do NOT want to miss a single thing, for every moment is crucial ! Literally.
@@gillesmatheronpro yeah, I double checked it. shutter angle only works in manual mode. so, yeah....
bro you in to sonny cameras now 😑 we have lost another one....
😂 i use all cameras
I prefer the warmer ones that brings out redness in your skin, but I am a filthy casual watching this from a 720p monitor on an antiquated laptop so what do I know.. Sony 2 Alexa looks way too purple, but as we say in Norwegian: Smaken er som baken, den er delt i to.
Taste is like one's ass, split into two.
😂😂
I think S log3 looks best
100%
Seems we are all Beta testers once again. Sony has pulled the 6.0 update from its servers. The creators app update is also not available anymore
Overnight?
@@JustinPhillip Don’t know when but at this point the 6.0 update is not available anymore
So they suspend the firmware lol. SMH
😞
@@JustinPhillip been waiting forever for this shutter angle. Guess I missed it.
You look sleepy, Man
😂😂
Was never a problem just set up to 3 different memory. Just TH-camr(not you) bullshitting nonsense 😅
👌🏼
