The FX3 and FX6 have a unique exposure regime compared with a lot of other cameras. This requires different setups but done right you have a great tool. For instance, I shot a gig over the weekend which required me to repeatedly bounce from inside to outside. I settled on my ND need at ISO800 (CineEI mode) for outdoors and when I popped inside I would shift to the ISO12800 mode and leave the ND in place. Simple. And at the same time very different than how I’ve had to manage other cameras. Comparing these cameras with the experience in practice is very useful for me, it's just another level, I'm still in the waiting mode for buying Lumix cameras, your review has dispelled all doubts about this, thank you
I think one of the value of open gate is capturing a moment that you want to post horizontally and vertically. Have it in my xh2s and i love it for yt videos and ig fb and tiktok reels :)
I also saw posts of people mentioning it as kind of a "rolling shutter hack" to film 6K open gate vertically (and crop back to 16:9 later) in situations where you'd struggle with that when filming horizontally. To me personally the whole rolling shutter debate is hung up waaay to high, but for that one specific shot you need to get and find the RS to be too much on the S5II(X), that trick just might do it. So 6K open gate does at least give you options - whether you need them or not.
I had a S5IIX and it’s a great camera but the rolling shutter was terrible, I sold it and bought a FX3, I think it’s a better video camera but I miss the stills from the S5IIX.
All cameras are really great now. Even cameras that are 5 years old. Sony has the best autofocus. But I think all brands are otherwise even. I believe if you can be happy and productive with what ever system you have you’re personally ahead of the game no matter what happens.
Apparently the s5ii with the sigma mc-21 adaptor performs extremely well with EF lenses. So that will ve the clincher for me since i have a fist full of L series glass. I know you can get an ef to e mount adaptor but i dont think its as good.
Great vid! Wanted to mention that your training for the S5Iix is excellent….really enjoying all the great info! When I looked at Sony (A7sIII) and I did not the color science at all. It’s sounds like they have improved the green tinge ?
Awesome video bro...I have a S5IIX myself and I´m really happy with it. I think I can build a great environment around it. With more light, mics and lenses I´m improving my work a lot.
Was using Panasonic for years before switching to Sony. The price to feature set compared to Panasonic is truly one of my biggest struggles. However the autofocus and lens options keep me grounded…
Great video. What about the fx30 vs the s5ii. Filming indoor top down product reviews. Unboxing and doing hardware mods. I like the cheaper lens options on the fx30 but I’m scared it won’t be good as the s5ii quality in my lighting. I do TH-cam tech content if that helps with any advice. Thanks 🙏 ❤
Both are great cameras, but if you don’t need the expensive E-mount lenses in the future or plan to move up the Sony ecosystem in terms of cameras, then I believe the S5ii or S5ii-X is a better choice for you. Better quality versus price for both the camera and lenses, making it a dream for building a TH-cam channel.
about your comparaison in image quality, i have seen a reviewer that picked up on your issue, the Vlog footage is often overexposed if you try to match the 2 cameras using the same colors grading. when that reviewer used the sony as a base the lumix footage was overexposed, when using the lumix as a base the sony footage was underexposed
No. It’s simply the difference in the log curve. V-log has slightly brighter shadows and midtones than S-log3 which creates a nice highlight rolloff. There shouldn’t be a huge difference in exposure unless that guy doesn’t know what he’s doing. It could also be the difference in ISO as not all brands are accurate with these numbers but that should not affect the image in a big way.
I noticed this too, I tested the original S5 (seconde base ISO at 4000) and the A7IV (seconde base ISO at 3200). At the same ISO value (I chose 4000 for both) and an exposition compensation value of 1, the S5 is one stop brighter than the A7IV. As stated in the comment below, i'ts just that brands translate iso values differently.
About Panasonic lens 16-35 rubber problem. I had something similar but with my Panasonic S5ii camera. After of using this camera for 2 months, my camera body rubber grip came off the camera. I'm having the exact same problem with the rubber on my 16-35mm S-Pro lens. It just started a month ago was worried about glueing it. I would like to know how that worked out for you.
Damn, Lumix needs to fix that; it's not good enough for its price. The glue worked, but you can see a little bit of it on the edges of the rubber. Go small with the amount. I did manage to wipe most of it off, but it was tedious.
@@OBP_ Thanks for the advice. I bought the same gorilla adhesive that you showed. I will use a very, very thin coat. Yes we shouldn't have to be doing this. I haven't even used this lens that much. Panasonic sells new rubber rings for $ 22.95. Says they won't have them in til Nov. 1st

regarding lenses there isn't much of an advantage for E mount as its mostly photography lenses , but Lumix definitely has to release new pro lenses that are as good as the s pro 70-200 which is parfocal. its the most affordable zoom lens for video in that focal range and quality and its really good .. they just have to get a new version for the 24-70 that is as good , and perhaps a 24-100 2.8 ..
I ve seen countless of review regards to Panasonic S5, S5ii… I am not gonna lie, I am very tempting to try the S5, I need to look for a lens that can be versatile on it at good price then will pull the trigger
The S5II doens't save settings to the camera well when removing battery or turning camera off and back on. The menu is unstable at times and colors cast often, and WB and tone needs to be improved via firmware
i have heard this before and i would like if possible your clarification, the fx3 when cropped on super 35 lets say it uses 5mp, does it really matter on video? i mean most video cameras have really small mp count ... i m really impressed if that's true, or if i misunderstood at some point
The crop on the FX3 is in Full HD, so that's 2.1MP. Maybe there's some kind of downsampling going on, but from my testing, it's just okay. Usable if needed, but I hate shooting anything less than 4K nowadays.
@@OBP_ sure i understand that but in the s5ii its like 10mp and its still HD right? i'm trying to understand why you prefer the crop of the s5ii vs the fx3, that's all, thanks for your answer :)
ZVE1 overheats bad. I rented one to try it out, and it even overheated while scrolling through the menu (yes, tolerance to heat was on hight). So if recording time and reliability is important to you, don't consider it. The ZVE1 is meant to be a vlogging camera.
hi, since you work with actual cinema cameras i have a question please: you talked about that handheld cinema footage that give a natural pleasing movement to the footage, wich i like alot way better than the artificial gimball. is this pleasing motion related to the sensor reading speed? the FX3 has a faster sensor, could that give a more pleasing look when using handheld with maybe ibis compared to the lumix S5ii? no electronic stabilizaion added of course. if you have the possibility to test out both cameras side by side, like following a person from low ground with a top handle or approching it.
It's the weight of the camera. Heavy cameras don't have micro jitters. IBIS or an easy rig can help, but nothing beats simply making your camera package heavier.
The fact that you can buy 2 S5IIX for 1 FX3 is mind-blowing. You can pretend to more project, Multicam interviews, shoot with two fix lenses, and production value is way higher in a sense. Can't wait for S1H mark II

Different departments. Cinema line vs alpha. The current fx sensor owes its heritage to the a7siii though. Some other features like 12,800, 16bit RAW "signal" from hdmi, 4K 120...all started in the a7siii. FX started Cine ei. Alpha dept gives all that to fx. from what I understand Sony is screwed as far as full frame open gate is concerned because of the flange distance of its mount , so part of the sensor remains covered and unusable even if they would allow FF open gate via firmware. the BURANO has PL mount so no issue there and they could offer it .. lots of people are expecting the next S1H that's very likely to be a box camera or to have a box version , probably with better specs then the PYXIS which is the only competitor in this range offering FF 6k open gate , hopefully with faster rolling shutter , dual or triple iso , autofocus etc .. although internal raw recording will be ProRes raw most likely but with 32 bit float audio support , arri log .. regular codecs not just raw ..
Not true with open gate on the Sony, if the mount obscured the edges of the sensor you would see it in photo mode. The mount does limit their IBIS performance though, as its small diameter doesn't allow much range for the sensor to move before it leaves the image circle. The lack of open gate is all on Sony management, particularly on the A7sIII/FX3/FX6/ZVEwhatever with the 12MP sensor, as it doesn't seem that reading out an extra 4MP would be that taxing. The higher-MP cams would maybe hit a wall with reading out the additional pixels, or at least would have awful rolling shutter when doing it.
Couldn't careless which one is better when hollywood is using a $1000+ iPhone to shoot 28 years later, guess where the other 70 million is going Into everything else. Comparing these cameras with the experience in practice is very useful for me, it's just another level, I'm still in the waiting mode for buying Lumix cameras, your review has dispelled all doubts about this, thank you
Thank you for taking us behind the scenes of your actual work. Fair points on both cameras. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks for watching!
Got a S5iiX from B&H with 35,50,&85 s primes for ~2500$ during NAB
Bonkers value compared to a7s/fx/r5 only comparable to smaller sensors imo
Really interesting video. I personally think the S5 ii looks like a great deal. The fx3 is a brilliant camera, but it comes at quite a price.
Great video! For anyone choosing between these two cameras, you talk about all the important things, really!
Thanks so much!! Sony have fixed it in the Burano & Venice looool, so you only have to spend 20k+
Very good video.
I use an S5IIx, records straight to ssd in Apple ProRes HQ. Ditched my Atomos Inferno…
Awesome video bro...I have a S5IIX myself and I´m really happy with it. I think I can build a great environment around it. With more light, mics and lenses I´m improving my work a lot.
Thank you for the video. Gonna get that Lumix S5 II as my first camera more then likely.
Man you are such a great lad making these videos and sharing your knowledge. May your business fair well 🙏
Was using Panasonic for years before switching to Sony.
@@Aviciiz he said the logs need to be exposed differently, the video at 5:31 is Sony FX30 vs Lumix S5II | The classic or New Hero? by kensei akatsu
The S5iix also happens to be a fantastic stills camera. For hybrid shooters, its a no brainer.
About Panasonic lens 16-35 rubber problem.
I had something similar but with my Panasonic S5ii camera.
After of using this camera for 2 months, my camera body rubber grip came off the camera.
Also had so many problems with crazy background pulsing!!
After of contacting Panasonic, still don't have any response from them!
Pore customer service and build quality!!
Otherwise I agree that image looks great..
My philosophy is what you pay is what you get!
Thanks for great video!!
Why did you not make comparison with S5iiX instead of S5ii?
S5iiX is surely more video?
Only difference is codec and able to record in SSD
i mean if one is comparing an 4k video camera to an 1.8k hybrid cam shows you that this camera is brutally powerful
Great video, I am using the G9 II and looking to get a FF too, what is the best wide angle for the S5 II?
you can't create the same special moment twice often. for that reason, open gate is useful
Just ordered my S5iix
Top stuff Gary. Love my S5iix.
Price/value S5II smashes FX3.
open gate is everything
Video starts at 4:05
Thanks for the great information! 🙂All the best.
1st
Lumix is so much better, Sony way overrated, great cameras and color though no lie.
LUMIX is probably half as good to be honest. Bought the s5iix and wish would have spent the extra on fx3. Rolling shutter sucks, hdmi lag is unusable, moire aweful, build quality so cheap. It’s a budget camera. Better off with Blackmagic 6k g2 in most cases. I find the ibis super jerky too
Sony over LUMIX all day
@@hhankx black magic body designs 1.) are kinda trash, will say colors are good, obv. Sony is good thats just cause they’ve had time to fix the quirks, we at least update firmware and have had shutter angle for years, Lumix next line of cameras are going to be great that I know, I do prefer the build Design of the S1, its at least feel better in the hand. The GH7 is great too tho w/ ARRI Logc3
@@hhankx well, it is indeed a budget camera at basically half the price that the fx3 came out. The true balanced battle will be between S1HII and the A7SIV when/if they come out xD
@@hhankx you're the only person I seen in 8 videos that said the ibis is jerky lol troll
I love my S5ii
Too bad the preamp on the panny has the cricket noise problem that they won't acknowledge
I heard "Weigh in" as "wedding" at first, and thought they couple had unusual dress :)
very rich comparison! thank you
How do you deal with moire? I'm considering rebuying an s5 mk1 and use that as a cam for this reason.
I've never had any issues with moiré with the camera. You’d be better off buying an OLPF filter for the S5ii than going back to an S5 Mark I.
@ i have issues all the time, luckily i can live with it but i do notice it. Idk, to me it makes sense to use s5ii for run and gun autofocus stuff and b cam, and mk1 or better yet s1h for tripod stuff / a cam. Didn't know about olpf filters.
I'm debating wether or not I should switch to Sony. I feel like my S5iix is better than the FX3, and when I use one I miss features from the other... I might just wait for the S1Hii or whatever they end up calling it.
We see a new Lumix soon enough so just wait and see.
For audio are you running into the system provided by the venue or recording on camera ?
The audio is from the mic they are holding yes. the on camera mics are just back ups.
@@OBP_so is that your mic just for your camera?
Or is it going to a sound board in the studio?
I’m filling a project today and am running two wireless mics
Just curious your situation
Every venue is different
Are you using already the Lumix in payed projects? How does it matches with your Burano
I use the Lumix on paid projects, yeah. Matching it to the Burano is probably closer than you think, but they are worlds apart in post-production and usability.
regarding lenses there isn't much of an advantage for E mount as its mostly photography lenses , but Lumix definitely has to release new pro lenses that are as good as the s pro 70-200 which is parfocal. its the most affordable zoom lens for video in that focal range and quality and its really good .. they just have to get a new version for the 24-70 that is as good , and perhaps a 24-100 2.8 ..
Also, 24mm, 35mm, 85mm, etc. primes in S Pro. they are probably the most popular G Master lenses, and Lumix only has a 50mm S Pro.
I think the s5ii it’s a must have for the price point
I ve seen countless of review regards to Panasonic S5, S5ii… I am not gonna lie, I am very tempting to try the S5, I need to look for a lens that can be versatile on it at good price then will pull the trigger
The S5II doens't save settings to the camera well when removing battery or turning camera off and back on. The menu is unstable at times and colors cast often, and WB and tone needs to be improved via firmware
12:19 I’m just wondering why these two shots were exposed completely differently to the detriment of the lumix?
I think the camera settings were matched, not exposures. The Lumix is brighter in each shot which makes it look less filmic
i have heard this before and i would like if possible your clarification, the fx3 when cropped on super 35 lets say it uses 5mp, does it really matter on video? i mean most video cameras have really small mp count ... i m really impressed if that's true, or if i misunderstood at some point
Thank you so much for this video, i will watch the entire video
i'm considering between ZVE1 vs S5ii and the fx3 has the same sensor
ZVE1 overheats bad. I rented one to try it out, and it even overheated while scrolling through the menu (yes, tolerance to heat was on hight). So if recording time and reliability is important to you, don't consider it. The ZVE1 is meant to be a vlogging camera.
@@NicholasPapadimitriou1993 i've had it for 2 weeks now and never overheated, but i dont film long videos
Yes, for any professional work, the S5ii all day long. Don't even risk the overheating.
hi, since you work with actual cinema cameras i have a question please: you talked about that handheld cinema footage that give a natural pleasing movement to the footage, wich i like alot way better than the artificial gimball.
is this pleasing motion related to the sensor reading speed? the FX3 has a faster sensor, could that give a more pleasing look when using handheld with maybe ibis compared to the lumix S5ii? no electronic stabilizaion added of course.
if you have the possibility to test out both cameras side by side, like following a person from low ground with a top handle or approching it.
It's the weight of the camera. Heavy cameras don't have micro jitters. IBIS or an easy rig can help, but nothing beats simply making your camera package heavier.
@@OBP_ thanks, and these heavy cameras have ibis or is it diabled?
14:19 you’re not just limited to the Lunix S5 II! You also have Blackmagic Design Pyxis 6K which also support L mount lenses.
That's a fair point. I think Lumix and Blackmagic will be a popular duo moving forward.
The fact that you can buy 2 S5IIX for 1 FX3 is mind-blowing. You can pretend to more project, Multicam interviews, shoot with two fix lenses, and production value is way higher in a sense. Can't wait for S1H mark II
The OLPF is the most important missing part in the S5II.. Moiré is so important to control, and sadly it’s a big problem
How often do u get moire though ? Kolari makes a olpf for the s5ii though
@@creativegreatsvisuals All the freaking time bro.. it’s even worst when shooting in 6K or ProRes 5.8K with my S5IIX. It happens on fabrics/clothing, textured walls, hair, buildings, etc.. it’s everywhere man! I won’t say that I find moiré in every single shot.. that would be a lie.. but "at least" 3-4 shots get unusable on every shoot. I’m very well aware of the Kolari mod, but it’s 699$ USD + shipping and customs/duties… I live in Canada and it would cost me over 1000$ USD (around 1320$ CAD)… which is a deal breaker. Sony APS-C with micro USB port in 2024
Is most insane release by Sony ever in history of Sony releases.
I’m here at your channel because I’m making the internet tired of searching each day for any news about new Fx3 ii successor of the FX3 camera.
Can you make a video about what will Sony release in Q4 will it be the FX3 ii or the A7s mk4.
I want to buy 2 Sony fx3 ii direct with launch I will pre order it directly and used for interview setups, and journalism production.
The industry needs a successor in this range of cinema cameras.
Please make some update video about what we can expect
And subscribed bro.
Both great camera’s,however Sony bar none is a better all around platform. They have the expertise, knowledge and all the premium lenses you ever need. When it it comes to value,Panasonic is a clear limited winner.
What a Sony fanboy would say.
The giveaway is awesome, it would help since I don't have much for lighting.
Since I never had a Sony, it used be all about the a7 line... a7s for video. It's been a couple of months now that I saw the FX series.
What's their purpose compared to the a7s?
Different departments. Cinema line vs alpha. The current fx sensor owes its heritage to the a7siii though. Some other features like 12,800, 16bit RAW "signal" from hdmi, 4K 120...all started in the a7siii. FX started Cine ei. Alpha dept gives all that to fx. Can't they give cine ei and shutter angle in return? I guess that would make them the same though...if they added the exclusive cine line features.
@@errol3184 I see, yeah weird they did not include the shutter angle :P Watched some ei video too and I'm meh... Can't see the reason for the FX line since it's so similar the a7s. Maybe it will deviate more in the future.
Nikon z6iii is better image full frame 60p but it does not have fans so it can overheat faster than a s5ii plus s5ii had better ibis . Panasonic has mastered ibis far ahead of others . Also who has a 3.5 with better amps the fx3 , s5ii , or Nikon z6iii ?
@@creativegreatsvisuals I sent back 3 Z6IIIs because of quality issues. I enjoy my Z9 but the new 6 seems to be having some production teething problems. In the mean time I’m shooting Sony FX3 which is a more complete video camera.
@@wavelandI like the fx3 you can’t go wrong with that camera and now it has shutter angle too . Wow . It’s a money maker camera for many . I don’t like the 60p crop but on the flip side can get more length out of a 24-70 2.8

Can we get some reviews on nd and cpl filters
Thank you sir for circling back! Sony is so boring😂 as far as the slog curve, use a creative Lut and not just a conversation Lut.
I was gonna say something for those in the Best Camera phase.
Best advice I got:
It's just a tool
Lumix looks better in color and stabilization
Sony just have the best marketing ..
I HATE the intro. Get to the point please.
I use the A7siii at 12800 all the time and that alone makes this camera a BEAST!! for videos. Meanly if you shoot weddings or documentaries, you have no idea what kind of lighting conditions you will find yourself in. This is were ND filter comes in clutch! so when you said the 12800 is unusable, you are seriously wrong and have yet to use that camera correctly. USE ND filter! I am sure you use them outdoors.. TH-camrs complain about the stupidest sh!t sometimes. If you don't know how to utilize your equipment just be honest.
He’s comparing without an ND filter bro. Just a standard comparison of base
I had some comments on TH-cam, but someone telling me to shoot at 12,800 ISO and put an ND filter on because it's too dark is a new one! loooooool
@@Lunar_Films That still don't make any sense either... ND filter is a tool so why not use it? cameras are tools as well as every part you need to add to it to make them work for your shoot conditions.
@@OBP_ Dude, if you understand what base ISO is, this will make sense to you. Keep your camera at its base ISO; it's there for a reason. Your statement wasn’t very wise-you’re comparing one camera’s base ISO to another camera’s regular ISO and complaining that one is producing poor image quality. If you’re in a situation where you need to expose to the right and your first base ISO isn’t cutting it, switch to your second base ISO and use an ND filter to maintain your settings. Stop giving folks poor advice online.
@@DrL33productions the 12800 is a fake iso, there have been test that showed the A7s3 has alot of digital noise reduction at iso 12800
if you disable internal noise the S5II is better
Lumix image is pleasant. sony is just like Yeah
Video Starts at 04:08
from what I understand Sony is screwed as far as full frame open gate is concerned because of the flange distance of its mount , so part of the sensor remains covered and unusable even if they would allow FF open gate via firmware.
the BURANO has PL mount so no issue there and they could offer it ..
lots of people are expecting the next S1H that's very likely to be a box camera or to have a box version , probably with better specs then the PYXIS which is the only competitor in this range offering FF 6k open gate , hopefully with faster rolling shutter , dual or triple iso , autofocus etc ..
although internal raw recording will be ProRes raw most likely but with 32 bit float audio support , arri log ..
regular codecs not just raw ..
The Sony Venice is E-mount and captures in open gate.
Lumix Lab app is great!

Using an external recorder to capture RAW, like they did with the FX3, for sure. It's everything else around the camera that matters the most.
