  • In this video I replace the O/S rear (right) ABS/wheel speed sensor on my 2009 BMW 330D E90 LCI Steptronic, fitted with the 3.0 diesel N57 engine.
The BMW gong sounded and multiple warning lights illuminated - ABS, Traction Control and the Hazard light. Additionally, the iDrive display indicated that the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) was inactive. The fault was intermittent and could occur after a thirty minute drive or immediately, sometimes resetting when ignition switched off, other times reoccurring immediately.
A Carista diagnostic scan indicated the following fault codes:
    Traction/Stability Control
    5D36 - Manufacturer specific code
5DC1 - Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor : Extrapolation
Being a later vehicle, it is not fitted with external reluctor rings on the rear driveshafts which can swell as a result of the driveshaft corroding, reducing or removing the essential gap between the reluctor ring and the sensor, sometimes even wearing away the sensor. Instead, these sensors monitor the rotation of an internal component within the wheel bearing/hub unit.
Using Febi Bilstein Parts, I replaced the ABS sensor and also the rear brake pad wear sensor which was found to have worn through on the upper suspension arm.
I also replaced the mounting clips for the wiring as they had become brittle and had broken. BMW part number 34356767984
Fault codes were reset and the vehicle test driven to confirm that the fault had been eradicated.

Thanks Bro... I went to a BMW dealer for 2 hours with my 520d G31. The diagnostician could not find the problem.
Finally, I plugged an OBDLink MX+ into my OBD socket, the error code C050D appeared (Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Range/Performance). So I replaced this sensor following your tutorial and everything is OK.
    Thank you so much !

The ABS and TCS lights just came on for my '09 451. I wonder if it's the same issue, though I don't have TPMS.

Usually a corroded/cracked reluctor ring on the Smarts. Easy to check and a not bad job to do. Have done them on previous Smart 450 cars I’ve owned.
