Replacing Front Brake Calipers, Brake Flexi Hoses & Brake Bleed - 1998/1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster E36
In a previous video I replaced the front brake pads and discs / rotors on my Z3 2.8 Roadster E36 5-speed manual in Arctic Silver, video here: th-cam.com/video/_JkgYsJ_nYM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BzvRPqgCcJiG6a_-
I had identified that the front brake calipers were heavily corroded and following that repair, the right front (o/s/f) brake started binding.
In this video, I replace the front brake calipers, the front brake flexi hoses and then bleed the brake system with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Because the caliper and carrier had been painted red, I used a wire wheel on a DeWalt cordeless drill to strip all the red paint from the caliper carrier and painted with aluminium silver VHT paint. I also paint the centre 'hub' of the brake discs as there were already displaying signs of surface corrosion on the new discs. This corrosion was easy to remove with a small wire brush, ahead of painting.
During the bleeding/brake fluid change, carried out with a Gunson Eezibleed pressure bleeding kit which takes pressure from a spare wheel / tyre, I discovered that the bleed screw / nipple was seized on both rear calipers. I did not force these for risk of them breaking but will be replacing these calipers in the future.
Parts used:
Brake Calipers - ATE (Autodoc)
Brake Hoses - Hella / Pagid (Autodoc)
Spring Clip - BMW 34341163565
Brake Fluid - Napa DOT 4 Synthetic (Motor Factor)
VHT Paint - Jenolite Matt Silver (Amazon)

Differential Oil/Fluid Change - 1998 1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster E36 5-Speed Manual Arctic Silver

In this video I change the differential/rear axle oil/fluid on my BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster E36 5-Speed Manual in Arctic Silver. The hypoid/gear oil is said to be maintenance free and sealed for life. After 25 years I feel it a good idea to change the fluid. The Z3 can have an open differential, a Torsen limited slip differential or a clutch pack LSD. I drain the fluid and replenish and additionally ...

I have continued to enjoy all your videos and your new purchase. Dont forget the little Smart. I still have mine but there must be something in the air for Fortwo owners this year as I also purchased a silver 2 seater sports car. But for me its an MX5. I was amused to see your new BMW after I got my Mazda, and I wished you also got one as I could copy all the service guides. I'm still learning good stuff though and also cant bring myself to sell the fortwo. Idea for Smart content is allround bulb upgrades/replacement guide. I would also want to know is there a safe way to increase the steering lock on the smart as it seems artificially restricted, annoying for parking. And for the convertibles how to best look after/clean the hood material. I can see some green appearing and I have done so many washes.

@@Smart451-ut6df I had considered an MX5 but when my friend had one I didn’t fit in it very well. The Z3 is just about ok but I wouldn’t want to be any taller! I have actually sold my Smart now. It was a difficult decision but essentially I ran out of content on it, having done so much with it. Naturally the Z3 took pride of place in the garage and I didn’t want the Smart living outside, exposed to the elements, so it’s an all BMW fleet now. In terms of the steering lock on the Smart, it’s something I’d be wary about and can’t really think of an effective way to change that. I’ve heard that the newer 453 models have an amazing turning circle though! In terms of convertible roof maintenance there are some excellent products out there for cleaning and waterproofing. I’ll be looking for the best product once I’ve covered the ‘mechanical’ side of the Z3 and move onto bodywork and trim.

I have just purchased the third party 'easy fit' tank straps you mentioned from a member on zroadster so hopefully that resolves the corrosion issues with the originals. One thing that would be helpful for me would be tips on jacking up the vehicle and good places to put axle stands. I'm assuming you are using the original jacking points but any advise much appreciated. Best of luck with the Z3 and looking forward to more videos.

Thanks for the very helpful video. I am thinking about carrying out this job as my car been slowly losing coolant over time for about 6M. Been pressure tested no leak found and block tested expansion tank a few times for signs of head gasket might of gone. Might be wrong here but I’m sure I recall you mentioning you’ve had past experiences working for the dealership. So completely off the chuff ask for help, but I’m at a loss with it. But I’ve been experiencing what seems to be fake overheating over last month prior to coolant loss and on a long motorway journey without fail when pull up outside house fans on full whack. Had the water pump, thermostat changed as apparently wasn’t retuning to expansion tank, but had no joy. Flush radiator/ system in case of blockage and then coolant sensor changed as wasn’t reading correctly. But still fake overheating(slight raise in coolant levels when in cabin temperature indicators reaching 110-120 mark for few moments then drops back to 90) all pipes feel hot and cold where meant to be, fan engaged and have been tested it operate. Mechanic seems to now think it might be a ECU software issue. Only other thing I’ve notice via live data on OBD says DPF last gen 45236.7 km (although engine was off) so might be wrong. There also a fail code on code for horn, so wondering if it’s a relay that has gone as sure seen a relay - main current that seems to control horn and radiator fan overrun etc. I at a loss where to turn and wondered have ever come across this before? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

That's a shame - I learned a lot from your videos: removal of the rear panel, gearbox oil change, swapping the intermediate elbow to the exhaust, changing the front engine mount etc. I have a 2009 451 turbo and would have liked to have known the part no. for your exhaust (if original) and whether the gearbox oil change would have been easier on a ramp (I'm guessing so). I'm about to change the alternator belt on mine at 60,000 miles - that would have been helpful to see, too.
