Rear Panel & Exhaust Silencer Removal - 2008 Smart Fortwo Pure 451 71BHP
Work continues on my 2008 Smart Fortwo Pure 451 71bhp. In a recent video where I had carried out a vehicle health check / condition report, I identified that the o/s (right) mounting on the combined silencer / catalytic converter had rusted / corroded off.
In this video I remove the rear panels and lower tailgate to improve access to the exhaust system and remove the silencer, first disconnecting the connector blocks for number 1 and 2 lambda probes / oxygen sensors. I deep clean the black Tridion using my Karcher pressure washer, as there was a build up of mud and tar spots under the body panels and use WD40 / GT85 to soften the tar spots, making removal easier with rag.
I also remove the 'birds nest' of wiring for the aftermarket rear parking sensors that had been fitted to this car and reinstate the wiring to the tail light using solder and heatshrink.

Auto Knight Is Injured - My Struggle With Plantar Fasciitis

I am currently injured with Plantar Fasciitis - a painful condition in the sole of the foot sometimes known as 'Policeman's Heel'. It is an overuse injury, said to result from standing for too long, excessive running and exacerbated by unsuitable footwear that does not provide sufficient support/cushioning. There are exercises and leg supports that can help with this and I have potentially been...

    I bought a pattern exhaust for my 84bhp turbo Smart from GSF .... I wasn't prepared to spend £450 at the dealers. Noise levels are quite acceptable especially as it was only around £150. Unlike your exhaust though, the lambdas are part of the manifolds & not the exhaust so no EML problems. I commented on the differences between my exhaust & your previous Smart. ;-)

    You could do the repair for content and to get the MOT out of the way. Then in your own time get the decent exhaust. That price seems good for the replacement exhaust if it includeds cat. The MHD exhaust is just backbox and no cat and was over £300 as I recall. I paid £150 for cheap type new one (plus fitting). No problems with it, just looked not amazing. ultimately i guess an efficient 1.0 engine does not need too much in the way of Cat cleaning work so a cheap one should be ok? Can conversions be done to make the setup the same as the MHD so you dont have to buy a cat when exhausts fail?

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The earlier Euro 4 cars with the combined silencer/cat were less trouble until they got old and corrosion sets in. The Euro 5 with the separate exhaust silencer with flexi was more problematic, mainly due to the flexi failing but cheaper to replace. I’m thinking it would be a lot of work to convert it over!

    It's been many years since I've bought an exhaust for any of my cars/vans. I love to save money & get my welder out, and that's part of the fun. When I got my 451 I was surprised how rusty everything at the back was, so I took the engine subframe, rear axle, rear bumper bar off etc., wire brushed them with an angle grinder, then soaked in a home made de-rust solution, then also used Jenolite rust converter, just to be on the safe side, and then painted all with either 4 or 6 coats of smooth Hammerite. They now look lovely, but not back on the car yet. I probably went a bit over the top with the preparation though, but don't think they'll ever rust again. Always very impressed with the way you connect wires Steven, proper job ! Looking forward to the next video already, and hoping you're enjoying doing them for us all to see. Well done & thanks. 👍

    Fun fact... Some time ago my exhaust was hanging by some steel wire I put on it. I went to a SmartSpecialsit who put the car up high (garage thing) and took the exhaust under it away without removing any plastic or other stuff. And then mounted the new one there and then. No nothing removed, just from below. I was stunned it could be done this way. On my exhaust those left and right extruding small bars were rusted through and the formar owner had repaired them with rebarb iron rods.

    Would be a shame not to put a new exhaust on there, even one of the cheap unbranded ones would do which are about half the price of the decent ones. Always want to examine, clean and maintain my car when I watch these videos. Need to get some new clips etc. Ever thought of a 3d printer for clips? Wonder if it would work. I am still lovng my Smart 451, even with my MX5 which somehow makes me face the wrong way on roundabouts but my Smart keeps me safe. I was on a country lane down a hill the other day and there was some mud/gravel run off from the rain from the hedge on the road edge going around a downhill bend the front left tyre went into it and began to understeer. As I was wincing the safety tricks kicked in and brought me into control. I think it was ESP system so there would not have been a way to deal with that manualy I think.

    Great video really helpful. I was quite worried about this job and must have watched every nightmare possible wrt the task. For me the key was patience. I bought the freeze spray but didnt dare use it I was just too freaked out about the thermal shock on a hot engine casing having heard about cracked cylinder heads on VW Caddies. So I spent a week of spraying the glow plugs with WD40 and just used the vehicle no need to take it off the road. In the end they were literally sat in a pool of WD 40. So on the day I had the engine up to temp. Blew out all of the debris. Then used a torque wrench set to below the top end setting for the glow plugs. For me the tightening range was 15-20Nm. On each one I kept letting the torque wrench click out and then do it again and again and again until I felt it just start to move. It was a good day thanks for posting your video up.
