  • Revamping the old way of creating a hunters star with zero waste. Thats right you read it right here! Zero waste. So lets learn a newwer way to make a 9in block for the hunter star quilt.
    each block comes out to 8.5 inches unfinished, so 8 inches finished. If you only use the layer cake and no yardage, you will get 42 blocks. With a 6 by 7 design, your looking at 48 by 56. I would add borders too. its a nice size throw in the end! Have fun creating

    Nice honest video, good to see you acknowledge the “mistake” and make good. That’s quilting! I’m fed up with patterns that are too wasteful, fabric costs.

      You are so sweet and pleasant. I agree about the waste. Plus I think the paper piecing takes longer. Lovely block.

    THIS is so very GREAT! Thank you for cutting ✂️ out the waste. I love this 💡 idea. I am a newer quilter, so your tips on getting the points to match really helped. I also appreciate that you fixed a mistake and didn't cut it out. It gives me hope. YOU demonstrate and explain very well. Thank you for sharing this with us 😊🧵🪡🌸💖🦓Liz

    Brilliant! Thank you. Because all the cuts are on bias, which I tend to distort, I would starch the layer cakes. Yes, it would require trimming the layer cakes bake to square and then beginning your technique but it would give me peace of mind. Ha.

    I agree, many Hunter's Star patterns waste a lot of fabric. I understand you wanted to make a scrappy (color wise) Hunter's Star and that's ok , that's your way. But TIFFANY's QUILTING LIFE uses the same cutting method you do, just swaps certain pieces and ends up with a more traditional star.

    I have watched a couple of times. Great video! But I am confused where do the background triangles go and what is their measurements? I will watch again to see if I missed that part!

    • @sewblessedbyjess

      Good question! I didnt measure the large triangles, since all the blocks where cut from a 10 inch square. If you cut the 10inch square in half and then from the long side. cut 2.5 inches from the long edge.

    Sorry I sent comment twice Question- how do you know were to use light fabric and where to place dark or doesn’t it matter?

    • @sewblessedbyjess

      While following the placement that I give you in the video. It helps create that secondary pattern that you see when you place the block together. This is how traditional star is made. with a dark center with light out sides or a light center with dark sides blocks

    What’s the fabric youre using for this quilt and how big is the finished quilt? I’d love to make this quilt for my king size bed. Your instructions are wonderful and I love the no waste! Thank you!

    • @sewblessedbyjess

      The fabric I use was from Moda, designer Camille Roskelley Fabric line Dwell. It’s an older line. But you should still be able to find it on Etsy. Each block measures 9inches unfinished. So without borders I’m looking at 59.5 by 68. I’m making 7 per row by 8 down

  • @reginarose9940

    Your method is excellent, but I think the pattern disappears with the fabric placement. I have seen the Hunter's STR done "scrappy" with a variety of fabric, but the blocks were more orderly in their placement.

    • @sewblessedbyjess

      Yes I should have just kept it simple and used two fabrics per block for the video. I wanted a more scrappy looking quilt.

    Do u know how large a quilt is made from 1 layer cake of this pattern?

    • @sewblessedbyjess

      each block coms out to 9 inches unfinished, so 8.5 inches finished. If you only use the layer cake and no yardage, you will get 42 blocks. With a 6 by 7 design, your looking at 52 by 60. I would add borders too. its a nice size throw
