It’s an underrated car. The 2.0 turbo ecotec is a really good motor. I have a 2008 HHR SS with some bolt ons (getting a tune soon). It has the same engine and runs like a champ.
Own a few. None are race cars but they all put lenghts on cars with 2 more cylinders so its fun. Because of that a sleeper is probably my favorite kind of build.
Sleepers are awesome, and my family has one as a DD...2018 Ford Flex Limited, AWD, 3.5L EcoBoost (which replaced the 2011 Flex EB we had before it). These cars are a Taurus SHO with a wagon body, and are surprisingly pretty quick and nimble for their size and weight. With good aftermarket tires and a couple of other upgrades, our lunchbox on wheels is able to embarrass other crossovers, without breaking the bank...
I’ve got a 2006 S60R and let me tell you, every “small” fix isn’t small. Everything is over complicated and fucking expensive as hell. It is a cool car though...
I currently own a 2004 Volvo S60 2.5t that I'm looking to make into a sleeper, and I can tell you personally that a big problem of trying to build a sleeper is a lack of aftermarket support as your vehicle isn't normally modified like you're trying to do so the money isn't there for the big aftermarket companies.
I bought a Fit in 2008. Great car. Modified the shit out of it aesthetically and the usual coilovers, wheels, intake, exhaust...I miss that car. The first-gen Fits are fucking SICK, especially with K20 swaps.
A sleeper is worth it especially if you live in a country like Australia that has strict car modification laws. my 96 integra is a sleeper and cops don't bat an eye because I never fixed the faded paint and scratches as well as the dents.
Love the car but I hate to say this. Most definitely not a sleeper for almost all car guys/gals. Not only are they mildly aggressive but most know what lies beneath the hood of that small sized sedan and the tuning possibilities of the stock motor/setup. You could fool some cocky stock 5.0 or camaro owner but if they’re a real car person they’l know wassup

I've got one for ya! Just stay with me for 2 seconds here. Factory supercharged v6 that you could own for like under 3k. Your grandma's bubble buick from the late 90s early 2000s. The buick park Avenue. Arguably one of the best sleepers out there. The 3800 is a more than proven v6 while it is front wheel drive you can also find this same engine (not supercharged) in some of the Camaros in the same time period. Those can be supercharged with junkyard heads and a modified supercharger or have one shipped up from the buys down under cause their holdens 3.8 had a supercharger. There is also a lot of aftermarket support for these engines where you can get performance cams and upgraded springs and lifters. I've even seen turbo kits for the non supercharged variant if that's your thing. These engines are also plentiful. At my local large pick n pull place I can easily find 20+ cars with the 3800 in it and occasionally the supercharged one so there's no worries about blowing it up. Literally this was in almost every gm car in the late 90s

Ford Taurus sho is hands down the best American sleeper. I say this because the new caddy’s with twin turbo v6 and awd still cost to much used for under a 15k sleeper budget. Like slap a 1000$ fuel pump on there and you will be maxing them turbos out!

Alex doesn't know the joy of owning a V70R, they're nowhere near as unreliable as people claim they are if I'm honest.. I owned mine for 6 years and did extensive modification to it to the tune of putting down 430 awhp and 480 ft lbs of torque, it walked just about everything on the road in my area aside from a McLaren 570S that I ran into on the highway coming back from work one day. The truth of the matter is that no matter what you choose to be your sleeper car you have to pick the car that you want. You can't just want a sleeper car because you think it would be fun to mod and have a unsuspecting looking car that's fast, you have to live for sleeper cars. Most everyone I know who owns a sleeper dailies that car, it goes with the territory of owning a car of that era.
All I drive sleepers. My supercharged Lexus is250 with 450hp. MY Chevy SS with 1400hp. All my other care are fun decently fast daily. Next is a Durango Hellcat or Ram TRX Hellcat or CT5V blackwing
Older Australian commodore cop cars (bt1) are perfect examples, they were the entry level body and styling but with the performance of the top model, with the v8, bigger breaks, stiffer suspension etc. etc. very sought after down under!!
I had a 99 Chrysler Sebring sleeper, it looked like a polished turd but under the hood it was a monster. Funnest car I've ever owned and one of the fastest too
I had an '87 ( that's in the 1900's ) Buick Regal T type LC. It was a GNX except, it was Blue and had a big chrome grille with all the chrome badges and sim/con top. It was great fun to beat down pretty much anything... as long as I could keep the tires from burning down to the rims!

My sleeper car is my 1988 RX7 with an LS1 in it looks completely stock like a 10th anniversary limited edition car till you put your foot into it and let those 500 ponies dance.

There’s no such thing as sleepers anymore. Anything rocking a set of brembos out of the box these days are usually quick lol
They made a hsv gtsr which is a “Chevy” ss on roids, has an LSA in it not an LS3

I love my MS6. Just looks like a normal 4 door sedan, but it hauls ass and handles really well, especially given its weight.
