Yeah that’s why I decided not to become a dr Not the best work/ life balance I don’t want to work my life away
I think medical student life is worse. At least you are getting paid in residency and you begin to do what you actually like instead of rotating through bullshit you hate. I don't think it's super isolating because you build great friendships with your fellow residents and even the attendings sometimes.
yeah it looks like indentured servitude at its finest. You really gotta have a passion for medicine to endure this sort of slavery.
I feel the same way. I'm continually overthinking how the residency life will impact the relationships with my family and loved ones.
She seems happy! She gets sushi, yogurt, goes to the mall, cooks, exercises and has a great support animal. And she still gets to call her family and fly her mom out. It’s not that different from normal life. Many students just work sleep study work sleep study with minimum wage pay. At least she can spend money and have a nice home with furniture. If you want to be a social butterfly, become an influencer.

As someone whose kid has had to have his bowels manually disimpacted last year by an amazing surgeon, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO! (Kiddo has a perpetual stool ball that we're trying to get cleared out, and we didn't know he had it until his bowel was completely blocked. The x-ray was pretty legendary.)

loooool at everyone thinking the med student was being rude - it's a running joke amongst training hospitals/schools that med students don't matter and are just in the way all the time and are very forgettable because we rotate with a team for like a week and then disappear forever so he was just leaning into that 😂humor and self-awareness not rudeness!
I mean America’s reaction to it was pretty uncomfortable as well. If this is a running joke you’d think she’d be aware of it and laugh rather than reacting how she did. I think it was rude!

Didn't you know that the cutting board has pores if it is made of wood or scratches if it is made of plastic where bacteria can be accommodated and you cannot remove it even with chemicals? The counter is a much safer solution because the surface is polished. Next!

As a fellow night-shifter I recommend using something to stop the light from going around the black out curtains. I use a command strip on each outer side to secure mine to the wall, but can still open them in the middle when light is wanted.
You can put thumbtacks on the side walls where the curtains are. That way you can hook the curtains to them and get that "full coverage" night look. At least, that's what I do with my blackout curtains!
As a previous night shift worker for years my number one advice is this- SLEEP EYE MASK!!! Totally a lifesaver. No cap I used to sleep in my closet bc my bedroom would never be dark enough during the day even with blackout shades.

for a surgeon, what's the difference between a night shift and an on-call shift? (Except for maybe the length of the shift)
I’m not a doctor, but I think night shift you have to be at the hospital. On call you can be at home, you just have to be ready to go to the hospital at a moments notice if there is an emergency. Please correct me if I am wrong.

OMG, when a resident did fecal disimpaction at the ER, it went all over the place especially the curtains. It literally exploded! Some even got on the resident’s clothes. The ER smelled so bad for a good hour until they were able to fully clean it. The patients were all unhappy and laughing about it.
I kinda understand the med student answering in that way cuz it can be uncomfortable having a camera shoved in your face when you already feel stressed in a new environment but he could've definitely said something else 🤷♀️

America, completely unrelated, but when did you decide to switch back to eating fish? I know in your earlier videos you were trying to eat mostly plant-based. I work in the UK, but I *once* had a night with one page, which was me checking that everything was working properly. That was a (literal) dream of a shift.
