    Thomas Barrow is going through a pretty rough time at the moment. He's convinced that he's going to lose his job and almost everyone in 1920's England hates him.

      As for Thomas' boldness in saying that, well he just learned he was about to get fired so I'm sure in his head he was like 'why the fuck not?'.

Thomas is not a perfect person, but he is still a sympathetic character when he is being persecuted for no good reason. I absolutely adore the complexity of the characters and seeing their struggles and their solutions to the sometimes bizarre problems that approach them. Funny thing is, Grantham (along with Mary) _already_ knew Thomas was gay, but kept him on regardless. It’s kind, but at the same time illustrates their difference on position, as back in that day you could basically “afford” to be gay, if you had enough sway to bribe the authorities. Thomas, however… does not.

    "you have been twisted by nature into something foul and even I can see that you did not ask for it", ugh, I hate this line so much, not because it's badly written but because it's so real. I had similar things said about me by a homophobic teacher who quote "thought I was evil" but it felt it was her duty to "try and fix me." normally carson is a fairly likeable character but it's so hard to forgive how homophobic he is here, even if it was period accurate.

    • @MarkT1700
      @MarkT1700 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I am also gay and I sort of disagree, or at least have a different interpretation. Carson isn't being homophobic in that scene. He already knew that Thomas was gay - they all did. If Carson was truly homophobic, he would have fired Thomas immediately and without a reference - and then he would have called the police and had him arrested. Actually, he would have did it a long time ago.
      But the second part of his sentence is what matters. "Even I can see that you did not ask for it". Yes, calling someone foul is bad, but he actually does see Thomas as a human being and has sympathy for him, which is why he is being allowed to resign with a reference, so that he can easily find work elsewhere. In these times, Carson's response here was the absolute best outcome Thomas could have hoped for.

    • @AshAshBaby
      @AshAshBaby ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Mark Thompkins I'm going to have to disagree. Just because carsons viewpoint was typical of the time period does not mean it was not homophobic. Most people in that era were homophobic. It was a homophobic time. But the show presented us with several other characters who were much more compassionate towards Thomas and did not resort to calling him foul, revolting, threatening him with prison, or telling him he should be horse whipped. Besides, Carson makes his main motivation for letting Thomas go quietly with a good reference pretty clear- he does not want to cause a scandal for the Crawleys.
      Besides, you can be homophobic and still take a "compassionate" view. The people who wanted to put me in conversion therapy thought they were being compassionate and sympathetic too. They thought they were trying to help. That does not mean they were not homophobic. Likewise, Carson not wanting to totally ruin Thomas's life does not mean he isn't also homophobic. It's not a zero sum game.

    Also I find it interesting that Jimmy wasn't gonna say anything in the beginning if I remember correctly - he just felt obligated to condemn Thomas because someone saw them and it could be very bad news for him if people thought he was gay. He's not just a raging homophobe who is disgusted by Thomas. As with everything in Downton Abbey, it was more nuanced than that.

      Oh yes, a lot has changed. In the U.K. in the 1920's, you go to prison for being gay and now one can be legally married and have all the same rights asstraight couples do. Of course, you can't legislate hate and prejudice. Thoseare in peoples' hearts, 'and out of the aboundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh'.

    Thomas was so lonely that it broke my heart.. and that he took dangerous steps to try to change himself to “normal” was the height of sacrifice toward that end. Unfortunately is again repeating itself with historical accuracy.

Actions like this help feed the stereotype of gays being sexual deviants and in this case, it wouldn’t be wrong. If it were a man doing it to a woman, everyone would lose their minds. This is a very short storyline, easy missed. Barrow almost tells Courtenay why he himself has had to fight all his life "for being different".... its not so much Barrows sexual desire for him, more the self identifying of a man that has a huge struggle ahead, yes Barrow clearly desires him, but he clearly knows thats not happening.. its just a deep friendship... its wonderful.... then the blind Courtenay takes his own life... and Barrow is crushed.... wow.. "If a guy asks a girl out, she may say no and that's it. If he shows interest in another guy, he gets a punch in the mouth." Indeed, Jimmy immediately threatens Thomas: "There's nothing between us except my fist if you don't get out." (Granted, too bad more women don't or can't use that line on certain men...)
