Using A Fishing Rod To Decoy Doves | Dove Hunting 2022

  • Dove season is just a few days away in most of the country and this was my most action packed day of dove hunting from last season. A big cold front had just rolled into Virginia and along with it came hundreds of migrating doves that were feeding in a recently cut corn field that I had permission on. After seeing huge flocks of doves out here while scouting, I grabbed the shotgun and setup for an afternoon hunt. I also brought along my fishing pole, which had a dove decoy attached, in the hopes that I could get more doves to decoy using a tip I had learned from my dad. Safe to say it worked.. Hope you enjoy!

We have a dedicated dove field at one property, we set telephone poles and ran a cable to each one. The farmer is able to harvest his crop just fine and it works great

Season opens here in Ohio tomorrow. Can't wait to get out!
That fishing pole trick is awesome! Should say that if the wire has insulators at the pole, it's a power wire and DON'T use this trick! 💥💥💥

Good luck up there tomorrow! I would think it would just melt through the monofilament line instead of conducting it down to the fishing pole but I don't plan on testing that myself

Bro we got a power line that runs across the dam that we fish up here, the f****** thing is a Christmas tree of fishing lures and no one has EVER been shocked. trust me that electricity is not going to run up that monofilament, not going to happen.

Follow Thru. Keep swinging, after the boom. You will figure out the lead, just dont stop swinging. Whether you are Start with 'Proper' lead and maintain it, or Swing Through and shoot..when 'proper' lead is achieved. Its all about the Swing. Also, one more thing, maybe 2 lol STARE them down, I mean concentrate on the bird..nothing else, forget the Bead on your shotgun. If your face is on the Stock correctly, the BEAD is there, in its proper place. You arent aiming, as BEAD is nowhere close to ON the bird. If you get what I mean? Pick a spot to focus on, a messed up feather, whatever its sort of 'Aim Small Miss Small' You might find out like I did, if you ever see them blink or turn their heads towards you= DEAD BIRD When they do that at me, I tend to put out their eyes? BOTH EYES OPEN..your eyes You arent target shooting. Moving targets need the Depth Perception 2 eyes open will give you. You can do it with one eye, sure, but 2 eyes is better. good luck..Be SAFE...and HAVE FUN

Late response here but I hope this helps someone. You want an improved or modified, I would shoot a sheet of butcher paper or a big cardboard box and see how your gun shoots with both at 20-30 yards and get to know your gun and see what load/choke it likes better. Probably want a 6-8 shot for dove.

The most heart-warming thing about hunting doves and other game with a gun is having a well-trained, loyal and loving K9 companion afield. The hunting dog is important for the conservation of game and the dog can even let you know if birds are coming in case you did not see them of hear them yourself. I am troubled by all these dove hunting videos I see this day and age without the employment or retrieving dogs afield.
About 33% of shot doves are never recovered. Humans do not have a dog's keen senses to find birds in cover. There is a serious waste problem. Dogs solve this problem for the most part.
I like the notion of hunting with dogs for just old-fashioned charm. No, I don't want to spend time and energy combing through a sunflower or corn field for one or more dropped birds. There might be snakes hiding out there. The only "boy" I might have is a male Lab or golden. A retriever, K9 type, can also swim. Doves popped on the wing can and do fall into watering holes.
Poison ivy....another good reason for a K9 in the dove field!

This is incredibly dangerous, you need to take this video down now. The bottom wire there is a neutral and the top is a hot powerline, neither is for telephone. Both can kill you in the right situation. The risk you are taking is not worth a few doves. Don't you remember being told not to fly kites by power lines? Same concept here.
