Good vid! 2024 Opener today here in Imperial Valley, CA. Great opener. Limited with migratories in a couple of hours. Setup shooting off some great Mojo Voodoo’s & Flickers that some other hunters setup this year. I thanked them as I was getting some action from them. Tons of fun.
The mojo decoy is essential to help slow em down. Saw a guy in my group opening sunday with one and he maxed out along with his buddies while everyone else was running everywhere
Some great tips, thanks. Same ant problem here in ALABAMA. I learned the hard way a long time ago not to put my doves on the ground. Like your bucket set up , I have similar but you gave me a few ideas I hadn't thought of. Looking forward to dove season hope you have great success.
Great vid, DD! I'm not that big on camo but I think maybe some face paint or a headnet is warranted in dove hunting. If the sun is shining and you are looking skyward, your face is shining like a neon sign and will result in doves flaring. Can't wait for the First!
Good Video, DD. Keeping us informed and entertained at the same time. Dove hunting seems to take too much ammo. Never done it. I only hunted grouse. They flush, scare the heck out of me, and by the time I realize what happened, I never get a shot off. I think I only shot about 2 boxes of ammo in my entire "hunting" career. Still, beats a good day at work. Keep 'em coming you post them and I'll be watching/liking them. Be safe out there.
Great Information!! Really appreciated from a noob dove hunter looking forward to my first opener this coming Sept. 2022! Will be hunting the Imperial Valley. Thank for all the help, great video.
I went out last night about an hour before sundown near my favorite dove watering hole. I had picked up one of those Lucky HD decoys to go with my 9 bird solid body decoys. They worked extremely well! One dove even came from behind and landed in the spread. I went 5 for 13. Guess I should practice more. 🤠 CZ pump-action 28 ga.
Yep; I bought the Avery decoys last year for the second dove opener. I quickly gave my old Mojo clip-on decoys to a kid just getting into dove hunting. The Avery decoys are the only ones you can set on the ground and say; "those look like real doves".
Hi Desertdog, do you plan a break open game video in future? I would be very interested how your way is to supply the meat. Thanks for all your worthful informations in your videos.
All great advice. Thanks. I live in deep south Texas our winter season runs from about December 17th till January 20th I believe. I started dove hunt on opening day of this season and haven't been that successful. Any advice for this later season of dove hunting you can share would be much appreciated. I just recently got into dove hunting and this is my first season. I've never hunted anything in my life, but even though I'm not doing very well I'm still having a blast just being out there and the excitement of having a good hunting day.
We have to do the HIP survey as part of the state licence. But other than that, we can hunt doves with a simple Upland Bird validation. For waterfowl, we have to buy state and federal stamps.
Your SOL online. I've been on notification lists and checking daily for months and nothing. Unfortunately you'll have to hit big chain stores in person. Where you located?
You gotta get upland shells well before the end of July. By the Beginning of August, it's gone every year. Ammo manufacturers only do seasonal runs of steel upland loads. All you can do is keep an eye on your local stores for flats of shells that might trickle in from the distributors. Sometimes, we get a second run of steel shells later in the season when they do runs of waterfowl loads.
Because they are delicious and fun to hunt. It's the type of hunt where friends and family can go out together and have a great time; without the seriousness of big-game or waterfowl hunting.

had a great opener in the central valley over 1 mojo dove decoy, flocks of dove were flying over and landing with my 1 decoy.

Thanks for the tips and advice, they're still valid for me even though I'm a French hunter. Dove hunting is on my top list.
“Take a dump in the bag”😂. Great idea.

All ways watching DD. One great video after another. Thanks.
Fantastic video, many great tips I'll be using this weekend for the opener in VA.

8:10 -- Fancy poop buckets?! A better idea than my usual strategy of not eating for 36 hours before going into the field.
... or you can just poop on the ground a few yards away like a deer... and save money and plastic bags.
Good luck DD. White wings seem to be abundant this year in AZ. I'm really excited to go out next Friday.
I'll be out early Wednesday morning playing my part of the sympathy of shotgun blasts.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 here's to it not being a billion degrees out 🍻
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 How did it go Wednesday? I went out for a few hours and got 4 mourning doves. Poppers are in the oven right now
@@Redevil667 Ended up getting covid a few days before the opener.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 aw man, sorry to hear that. Hang tough bud.

yep, those decoys work!
Alright! You are really rekindling my desire to get out and dove hunt again.
Great set-up.
Got some of those Avery decoys... they look so good I'm going to have to airbrush some of my others to match because they look so bad by comparison.

Hey DD,
Does California require a migratory bird stamp or is it included in your license?
We have to do the HIP survey as part of the state licence. But other than that, we can hunt doves with a simple Upland Bird validation. For waterfowl, we have to buy state and federal stamps.
Anyone know any websites that have steel shells in stock? Can’t find them anywhere.

You can also buy direct from Federal, but they really gouge you. Not sure what they have available at the moment.
Ive never been on a dove hunt long enough that I have to worry about an unplanned crap. How many times a day can a man crap? thats wild
👍💯
I'm looking forward to taking my two boys dove hunting this year. I'm going to buy them a shotgun this weekend ands take them skeet shooting
I hope you and your boys got the doves this year. The doves were out in EPIC numbers this year.
Why do you want to kill flying rats?
Because they're yummy!!!
Have a great day!

Because "troll" hunting is illegal in these parts son
