I have been hunting doves since the mid 80's...before motorized dove or really any dove decoys were a thing and we did just fine. I wouldn't call hunting without decoys a "rookie" mistake.
LOVE the part about trying to shoot more than 1 bird. I only shoot double guns so that rarely happens. When I drop a bird, I follow it, stare at the spot, collect my dove. No need to get greedy and unethical. Great tips! I would add that I have noticed that doves are not nearly as stupid as folk would like to think they are. If you use motorized decoys and shoot at a large incoming covey of doves, you have just educated that covey. They WILL NOT be repeatedly fooled. In fact, I've done this then set up days later. I was in denial at first seeing doves in the distance spot my decoys and abruptly flair away MANY MANY yards out!?! Try to pick out singles or small groups of doves. You will find that in time, you get more of them!

Try using a skeet choke. With doves I tend to not really aim, but kind of instinctively shoot. I know that probably doesn't help but you will eventually get better. Try going to your local range and try trap and skeet shoots. Especially when they throw it across your line of sight.

INCORRECT....DOVE HAVE CONSTANT FAST WING FLAP UNLESS COMING IN FOR A LANDING. IN FACT ONLY DUCKS FLAP FASTER .....
I would concur they make like a two or three pump flap and ride for just a sec before doing it again or diving

I'm in Mid-Missouri.
I hunt in wardell in the bootheel, but if you're at STL, then colombia bottoms and weldon springs conservation are closer
