Whenever I put battery charger on battery and hit start button...holy crap. That starter really tops out. It would be nice if biker batteries came with higher cold cranking amps. Cheers. Thanks for a super video.
I'm farking around the same area with my 85/XV750. Got 2 of them, starters are gone, my new evilbay starter arrived today, but....testing it with a charged batt, jump starter leads, I recon, the new starter turns, but slowly How fast should these starters spin with no physical load? Car starters from my experience, want to fly off the bench Any thoughts?
not nearly as fast as a car starter they dont need the same power to turn over the bike. but for this bike a stronger battery more cold cranking amps is the cure for the starter gear issues I tried everything it did make a small difference but nothing was as goo as hooking the bike up to big car battery. didnt grind one time. they make some better cca batteries in the same size the bike takes there just way more exspensive but will also last alot longer. company here in the states called odyssey and of course the new lithium ones. hope this helped any other questions let me know thx for watching
odyssey only has 4 sizes its one of the middle two. unfortunately I dont have the bike anymore but I would just go with the more powerful lithium battery its going to be about the same price and be lighter and smaller
I have a 82 xv 920 I hope I can ask you a ? I replaced the idler gear and spring the and it catches just a second and then spins.does the end of the gear the side that goes to the cover does the end of that gear spin or not
the gear spins with the starter it is locked to the shaft.. if it keeps spinning one of two things is your problem. starter clutch on the flywheel could be going bad. or on alot of these bikes there is not enough juice from the battery try jumping it off a car see how it acts

Great point!
your right the real problem with this starter design is a crappy battery
I’ve seen that if you remove the spring it allows the gears to contact the flywheel properly
That might be true but you need that spring to help return the starter. Stronger battery takes care of the issue without tearing into it
