  • XV750, XV920, 1981-3 Virago Starter Ring Gear Fix
    The ring gear left stock or even with the shim kit will spin robbing the engine of the power to rotate quick enough to start. This fix is one out of 4 or 5 fixes nesseary to have a well running Virago . . . a little long, for those who know but a little instructional for those who are learning. Enjoy. Doctor Virago.
    PS. Sorry Some is a little off camera, I am not a pro and don't have a flip viewer

    These models also use the same starter. I thought you might add it to the main description for others with the unmentioned models. Great video, thank you!

    Thank you Dr. Virago I have one of the XV750 1986 which refuses to start. The planetary gears are so packed with molybdenum grease it's a wonder it would spin at all. I will follow your instructional video carefully and expect it to be perfect. Thanks again. Hans

    Hey guys. could any of u help me out here please. I got a 1999 virago 125cc. The starter wont start the bikeIt wont even make a noise nothing. I have to hit second gear and run with the bike to get it to turn on. After its turns on everything works geart and when it gets hot the starter will work just fine... I changed the battery spark plugs cleaned out the carburetor and i even took a part the starter from the handel bars apart and cleaned it. Nothing is working and i reallly dont know what else to do here. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Please forgive my possible ignorance. If you don't let that ring gear slip to some degree, what happens if you get any kind of backfire or backwards crank rotation during starting. Somethings got to give, like possibly a broken gear tooth or worse. Just asking.

    I wonder if Yamaha thought to just place ears on the ring gear?

  • @andreyz3906

    Have the same problem. Do you have any idea, how that ring gear is supposed to work in the original form, if nothing holds it from slipping?

    • @airheartforge1796
      @airheartforge1796 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yamaha relied on Assembly Pressure to hold the gear in place . . and later issued Shim Stock rings that you could 1 - 2 oe 3 to give that added pressure . . but they never worked either

    so what woudl you say the other 4 or so best fixes would be for this bike? since mine is down i might as well fix all the common issues :P

  • @stasksmac3497
    @stasksmac3497 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    muppet,that would cause serious damage ,during a common backfire,u really know what your doing, aye,even a well maintained bike can backfire, i know where im spending my money,on a 4 brush starter, best thing u can do

    When I go to start my 81 750 virago, it will turn the motor over like once then some thing slips and it sounds like bolts in a blender. Would doing what you show in this video fix my problem?

    • @DoctorXVirago
      @DoctorXVirago  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Boyd This is only one ov a number that need to take place, like: clean and free turning starter, Good Batt, Good Connections, clean and properly synced and jetted carbs, good plugs etc.

      This is the gear behind the bendix with the clip/tab that fits in a groove. The gear edge gets warn over time and slips you'll probably see that it's shiny from wear. Just take the bendix off, then flip the gear over so you have a clean leading edge again, make sure the clip is in the groove, then put the bendix back on. Over time that will wear also then you'll need to replace the gear with a new one.

    I did this and it didn't help. I think the starter is weak. I doesn't have the torque to stay engaged always. I think a good battery is really key and keep the bike tuned up so it starts easy.

  • @twistedmetriccycles

    would be easier to drill holes then weld each hole with the gear inside.....

    The "clips" are brakes as you described, however they in no way stop the starter gear from rotating as it rides down the spiral gear that its spinning on, centrifugal force sends it out to the flywheel however without enough force to force the engagement as they are grinding, the clip adds drag to the starter gear which assists the centrifugal effect upon the gear by the spiral gears spinning. with no clip on the starter gear it will free whel and maybe not even grind! mine was doing this, freewheeling essentially, I looked ito the oil fill hole and saw the assembly and put a screwdriver to the starter gears back side and added force towards the engagement for the gear, it was kind of scary to hold it as the starter motor was spinning but it actually engaged my starter and got my bike running! I was thinking I was going to have to do it every time to start it however a few more attempts to force the gear down was not successful, so its possible but no slam dunk manually, but you can see into the motor to view what is or is not going on pretty much.
    My 2 clips were actually GONE! both of them! I assumed some body removed them but I found 1/2 of a clip in the bottom area of the motor!! 1/2 of 1 clip! so I guess it has alot more in there remaining but to date has not caused any harm, cross fingers.
    I used a Dremel tool on my mushroomed starter gears teeth and tried beveling it o the engagement side, I made them a bit wider in doing so but it works, it does sound pretty clunky but they all do to me, not unlike old Harleys. hat wimpy compression spring you would not imagine was going to dis engage by shoving a gear laterally however the engine pulses must be how it dis engages with no spring which is how mine is for now, I did not want anything countering my engagement as at that point I was not engaging, but with no clips I see why! centrifugal force alone will not even grind the gears it simply freewheels as mine did with zero clips. weak clips will probably grind as most do apparently, my magnet looked like a tiny Armadillo it was covered in metallic filings scary to realize but it seemed to have caught and kept it all some how, terrible design in my book but without it the motor would grind to pieces quickly. I wish now I had put the compression spring in as it does hang up for a second sometimes after the motor starts. My 1st time my clutch would not work! I had to remove the side cover and do the clutch part inside correctly, I didn't think there was a wrong way to do it and really not sure whats different now except maybe not set right somehow, anyways in my mind all mine really needed was the clip and filing the gear.

    These people asking why you can't just weld the gear to the case........
    Because you can't weld steel to aluminum.
    I thought everyone knew that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Really the only thing that works is upgrading to a Gen 2 starter system. Gen 1 is not going to work and all the Internet fixes do not work either and are a waste of your time. I have tried them all. Sorry to harsh this video but none of these are a viable solution if you want a working bike.
