Yeah, people forget that back in the day it wise widely criticized in both the looks and sound department. It’s is tough car to follow up because almost nothing sounds as good as a 355. I agree with you on the GTS/GT4 though, for feel, sound, reliability, etc they’re really tough to beat
They are reasonably quick to acclerate.. but not very fast. At least, not for all that long. But I would buy a tesla even though I like cars more than most people, not because it accelerates quickly though.
Ferrari 360 was the first ever supercar I've ever had a chance to ride in. That howl from the Dino V8 still rings loud in my ear, 7 years after that ride (happens to be just a few days after my birthday, coincidentally).
The constant Porsche vs Ferrari thing is a bit tiresome isn't it. Everyone knows Ferraris are exotics and a Boxster is a very well polished sports car.
I so love your videos! Great footage, sound and chocked full of great info and a bit of supercar philosophy now and then! I am a 2000 360 Modena Coupe owner and love it!! Thanks and BLESSINGS!
Interesting. I have a 986 Boxster S that I love dearly but I have found myself lusting after a 360 for the last year or so. Very timely video. Thanks .
@@JamaicanMeCrazy980 It is! Classic car. I felt the same for a long period of time tbh. Now I've come to the conclusion that the Scuderia is actually not that bad (in the right spec). The Reventon and Aventador are classics. Always loved Lamborghini. My grandfather used to work with oil-fired boilers and was invited by Ferruccio Lamborghini to come down to Italy to see the ones made by Lamborghini (not sure a lot of people know that Lamborghini made boilers haha) and tell about the ones in Scandinavia (as far as I remember). Maybe that's why I like the Lamborghinis besides the design etc.
Well, I own both a Boxster and a gated 360 Spider. And, I use the Boxster during the week and the Ferrari on the weekends. Yeah, cmon, the Porsche you don’t mind putting the miles on, running errands, etc, but I’m always excited to fire up the Ferrari and sing that motor to 8500 rpms with the top down-nothing any Porsche can match-well done Jay!
Enjoy your videos. No doubting your passion for the 360. The thing is we all have our favorites. I’m fortunate, I have the financial wherewithal to own and drive pretty much any car within reason, and what do I daily drive, my dream car since I was 17 (I’m 76), my 2018 V8, 6 speed Mustang. I did consider a Porsche, but was turned off by dealership attitudes. It’s the good old American “iron” for me, and I couldn’t be happier. Autoweek magazine reviewed the car and declared it to be an “Everyday Supercar” - They were correct. Happy motoring 🇺🇸
Owned 3 of these over the years whenever I'm in between F cars as I love the mid 90s to mid 00s Ferraris. The 360 aged so well, so reliable and looks even better in person than it ever did on posters. Every time I pull in somewhere heads turn. People at the gas station think it's a 2017 car. Owned 355 too and both are pieces of art. 360 of course is so much easier with maintenance. All time beauty. Boxster isn't even in the same galaxy ;)
I own a 981 spyder and have driven a 430 and been passenger in 360. No comparison between 360 and 981 spyder. Performance, handling, production numbers, feeling.. where does the 360 wins over the spyder?. Looks?… because the sound on the 981 spyder is great. The 430 would say is more savage. But if we have to compare the 981 spyder is closer to the 430. On the track the 981 spyder is faster than the 430
Love Ferrari's and have considered manual Ferrari 360, but stuck with Cayman, as I like to go to track days up to 10 times per season and Porsche Boxster/Cayman is better car for that. But for driving on a weekend on public road Ferrari might be more interesting option.
The F360 will always be a classic because it marked the peak of Ferrari elegance before the styling became a bit too aggressive (contentious comment I know), and because it was right at the inflection point between a car that was predominantly analogue, and the later cars which became increasingly digital. Bravo!
Great video on a true icon 😎 Manual with carbon buckets like this one is the dream, but people shouldn’t write off the F1 box with 'comfort' seats, I was lucky enough to have great time in one of those earlier this year 🤩
I drove a 360 at Knockhill around 13 years ago. Still, the greatest car I've ever driven. Really woke me up when I touched a white line and the traction control woke up when I was redline in third! :)
Would suggest the owner to check the rear toe links/ball joints. Watching the rear wheel during acceleration/shifting, quite a bit of movement. Great car and review as always!
That’s certainly not true. Prefacelift Gallardos were only 450hp, F430 was more powerful than 360 by about the same amount as 348 to 355 or 355 to 360. 911 Turbos were still under 500hp until 2010
Ironically I drove both my 430 Scuderia and my Boxster (718 Spyder) today. It was a good day. The Scud is for sure a supercar, but the 718 Spyder with carbon buckets, a manual and PCCB’s gives you an analog, emotional experience not many (any?) cars available today provide. That is what supercars should provide. Unfortunately, we live in an age where everything is highly capable, but also is becoming numb. Oh, and I turn around and stare at the Boxster (Spyder) no different than the other supercars
Any 986 Boxster owner that think they've got a "supercar" has a vivid imagination. I'm relaxing after a spirited drive in my 987.1 Cayman and it's no supercar either but I had a blast on the narrow twisty back roads around here. That yellow coupe you showed would be beautiful in red. Doubt I could afford to do the proper maintenance to keep it up so I'll stick with the Porsche.
Great video Jay. I thoroughly enjoy watching all the Ferrari material you have put together. Your vid on the F430 Spider inspired my purchase of the same this past March 2024. First prancing horse for me. I made my way into a full factory visit in Maranello this past July and am now having a serious look at both the 458 Speciale and the 488 Pista. Wife does not agree but what a wonderful hobby to enjoy. Many thanks for the inspirational and aspirational videos.
I would buy a 981 Spyder over a 360 every day. Possibly one of the prettiest cars ever built! Unless you’re a Ferrari guy I think most would by the more modern car given the choice.
I learned that numbers weren't everything from a few different cars. When Alfa Romeo swapped from the busso to the GM 3.2 v6 which was technically better, it still felt like a loss. When ford swapped the focus from the 2.5 volvo 5 cylinder to the 4 cylinder eco boost it lost a lot of character and excitement. When mercedes swapped a 4.0 V8 for a 2.0 4 cylinder...
Completely agree - I wasn't overly impressed with the 360 when it first arrived, but its aged incredibly well and I now consider it one of the prettiest supercars of all times. I bought one when it was 20 years old and I absolutely loved it. And the sound! Last of the screaming Dino engine cars! My nephew came to a supercar day and there were lots of new exotic there... the lil guy asked me why none of the new Ferrari's, Lambo's, or McLarens sounded like mine! :-)
A neighbor in the Costa del Sol had a 360 spider (red with tan interior) that was his weekend indulgence. I had always admired the 360 (the aero treatment being highly rational), but he dissuaded me because it was horrid to drive around where we lived due to the speed bumps, it guzzled fuel, and it was expensive to maintain. He didn't look as cool in it as JayEmm in this video.
Yes, the side profile is gorgeous, sometimes I think it's even better than the regular coupe. Like a little F50 :-) As a side note: James, your work is a piece of art. Your videos, sense of humor is superb. I'm opening YT in hope to watch your videos like going to my fav ramen izykaya to get some comfort. Thanks a lot for your work!
Great cars especially with a manual gearbox which is so nice to use on both the 355 and 360. I agree with Jay that a 355 coupe is a better looking car than a 360 but the 360 looks nicer in Spider form. The noise of a Ferrari V8 reached a peak in the 355-360 era as to me the 430 and 458 aren't anything like as musical.
Great video James, 360s are definitely coming into their own and are undervalued in my opinion. I have really enjoyed owning mine for 4 years and you were spot on about maintenance upfront, but once sorted they are awesome cars.
Owning a Ferrari is like dating a hot stripper. Fun to drive hard but high maintenance. Both look phenomenal with all the right curves in all the right places. Both make awesome noises when pushed. And both spend as much time in rehab blowing through your cash as they do giving you thrills. Nonetheless when she’s snorted a line and is revved up there’s not much better… Ferrari owners have a pain tolerance beyond what normal people have. Almost super hero like abilities to ignore the beating your wallet takes, often justifying their abuse with the fervor of a battered wife. Drive one and you’re like “Ok I get it.” The I go get in my V10 R8 with 40,000 miles and zero problems ever and the caveman side of my brain is squashed down again.
Ferrari V8s sound so unique. Apparently at the time of release the 360 Modena had the highest specific output (hp per litre) in any production car at 111 BHP per litre.
@@SeanPensive Leave it to Honda to produce a robust, efficient engine. I was referencing a car book I still have from 2002 that claimed that about the 360, maybe the earlier s2ks didn't have as much HP? It doesn't even have the s2000 in the book, only CRX, Integra Type R, NSX, NSX Type R, and Accord Type R :)
Could easily make a boxster a supercar killer. Add forced induction, wider rubber, better suspension, hardtop, and rip some weight out. It will easily ruin the 360 on track, for less money all in. But thats missing the point of both cars. They're both roadsters, just at different price points. Built for road use at fairly serious pace. Just that the 360 leans a little towards the GT side, and the Boxster more towards the road-sports side.
It's 2024 now, and the F430 manual is a rare find and the seller will be demanding a hefty premium for it. 360 manuals are slightly more reasonably priced.
Honda s2000 owner here. Thought I should drop in since we are putting Boxster in the same box with 360 😁 People have said elsewhere 360 is very much like s2000 on steroids. I've wanted 360. I still do. Wondering, once I've had it, have I had enough of it?
Interesting the Boxster 4L GTS has more torque, accelerates harder, is quicker round a track, looks better and won't ever let you down. You can get a Boxster Spyder or even a Spyder RS - all three of these are top tier sports cars.
Bizar that comment on the tyres. PS4S is 6-7 years on the market, the PS5 not even 1 year. And as I understood PS5S is at the moment only available as OEM for the AMG GT63. Tyre review (TH-cam) did test them on track and compared them to the Cup 2R on both dry and wet on that car.
Test drove one of these for an hour - lots of noise - not much go to the point it got incredibly boring after just 10 mins and no Fezza badge or howl was gonna change that Bought a 996 turbo instead - spent some of the money I saved modding ecu, exhaust intercoolers, big brake kit, upgraded suspension which runs a stiffer setup The car runs north of 530BHP max 1.3BAR boost with rev limiter increased to 7200rpm and sounds epic on WOT It is way more exciting to drive than the 360 could ever be and that's not just the engine but steering brakes handling and overall feel Though will admit both have same crappy low rent interior!
360 is gorgeous,is fast and expensive to run. Boxster looks pretty good, is very fast (4.00 GTS) far less expensive to run, more practical with plenty of luggage space (two boots) so not a supercar but probably a ‘better’ car!
MX-5 ND2 owner here. Never driven any Porsche, not to mention Ferrari. But I would like to try one day. MX-5 is such an enjoyable car to drive that I can’t imagine how good Boxter or 360 must be.
Noting wrong with an MX5. I have a Boxster 3.2S which I had an upgraded IMS bearing fitted to as they sound and drive best when the rev range is used fully. But that is the problem as second gear at the limiter is already exceeding the legal limit so a lot of the time you find yourself changing up before the variocam gets started. Lower power cars which you can fully exploit the available performance are just as much fun.
I have commented on this before, but JayEmm's ability to so speak at length without any pauses or stutters and to be so erudite at the same time is astonishing. I have to know: do you write a script and rehearse for hours or do you just have a rough outline and are able to just speak top of mind so effortlessly?
A 360 is a sports car, not a supercar. I’d deem it an exotic car, to be sure (as it’s rare) where the Boxster isn’t, but sports car it is. So was the Dino, the 308, the 338, the 348, the 355….. all the way to the 458. The 288 GTO and the F40 were examples of Ferrari “supercars”.
I really liked the 360 when it first came out but couldn't afford it. I just got a yellow 2022 Porsche 718 Spyder (in the US). It's pretty good looking and shouldn't have the maintenance issues that Ferrari is known for and outperforms the 360. OK, if it was two women, I'd take the 360. lol
It was a different time or let me say era when this Ferrari was launched, at that time i was in high school, and those cars were so special and the people who owned them were so special, no business man at that time would buy such cars, it was thought a luxury only the royal or wealthy could afford, i remember my self going to the show room and look at its beauty from outside, it was an event when you se a Ferrari or a Lamborghini in the 90s , you see it once a year and if you are lucky you see it again 🤣 i use to buy magazines to see those cars, i even upgraded my computer video card to Nevada to play need for speed 2 or 3 i don’t exactly remember, this car reminds me with those beautiful days, its a great car, today you open a wound, you see i own a 981 boxster Gts jet black with red top and interior, i love this car its an amazing toy and very reliable, every year i extend its warranty + last year i changed the ppf installed a new one, i take a good care of it, but now you have brought this car to my attention, thank you 😂 i was thinking to put my hard earned cash for a used 720s as its a beast of a machine, but after your video i am thinking to be one of the exclusive owners of those cars, i hope i find a clean car in metallic black color
Unpopular opinion: i'd prefer a NSX over a 360. And i'm not sure about a Boxster. The 3.2L was pretty dang good. (272hp and nobody is envious about it.
If push came to shove I'd go with the Boxster, purely on grounds of reliability and running costs. You can pick up a good low mileage 987 for around £20K, and enjoy the sound of the wonderful flat six engine. This model handles like a dream and makes an excellent daily driver. However, if I were to go the Ferrari route I wouldn't choose the 360 spider, I'd go for the California for not too much more money instead This much underrated car is one of Ferrari's forgotten masterpieces and punches far above the stated tech spec. If I could afford to run one I'd buy one today.
Ugh James! I dont need this video now, you are making want to stretch financially to the limit to get this, my dream car! I need to wait a year or two but if course by then they would have gone up more 🙃 Great video!
Looking at the wheel shot starting at about 11:47 - does that car have a significantly worn toe link? Probably worth getting that replaced soon. That could also explain some of the cabin shudder.
Impressive, that discs and pads cost the same as on my 2003 RS6. That is to say, Audi has none of the both available anymore, so you are depending on aftermarket stuff. And the 360 is as fast as my RS6 as well, crazy!
The reason people modified their exhaust at the time with brands like Larini and Tubi, they were 1. chasing that ear piercing formula 1 scream (maybe cliche and lame now), 2. future proof rusting and cracking, like F355 exhausts and E46 M3 exhausts, if the stock exhausts for those cars were SUS-304 grade stainless steels it would have been the best of both worlds, long term no rice good balance sounds, while not messing with stock cars

Has anyone ever claimed that a Boxster was a supercar?
No 😂😂 good clickbait though..
A drunk guy at the pub who has just bought one, maybe. "its like a supercar, you know". But no serious person, no.
The constant Porsche vs Ferrari thing is a bit tiresome isn't it. Everyone knows Ferraris are exotics and a Boxster is a very well polished sports car.
Exactly, a comparison to a 911 cab would make much more sense but even that's not really particularly valid.
7:22 "you've got me monologuing" brilliant reference, 10/10
I'm glad somebody got it!
@@JayEmmOnCars Another Incredibles fan? My absolute favourite animated movie. It came out when I was only 4 years old
It's a sensational movie - animated or otherwise
Missed opportunity to say incredible reference.
@@SevenRiderAirForce That is genius
I so love your videos! Great footage, sound and chocked full of great info and a bit of supercar philosophy now and then! I am a 2000 360 Modena Coupe owner and love it!! Thanks and BLESSINGS!
Interesting. I have a 986 Boxster S that I love dearly but I have found myself lusting after a 360 for the last year or so. Very timely video. Thanks .
I never realised but the 360/360 Spider have aged so beautifully. They're so pretty.
Indeed. There's a decatted 360 Spider where i live. It sounds terrorising and looks so great. Red with tan interior.
@@MaybachZ oof. Must be nice though. I never did like the 430. Just felt a bit too sharp. Which is odd because I like the Reventon and Aventador
Ferrari have a habit with that... timeless.
@@t3hgir oh I dunno. Not all have aged the same 😅 575 and 360 have aged well. 430 and Enzo. Nah.
Writing this 45s into the video. You're so right. I read on the AR forum once, "if you want to go fast, go get a Type R". Wise man that!
Most Ferraris do 1,500 miles a year.
Many people want a car that isn't temperamental.
Comparing apples with oranges
You are right - looks fantastic. And the power is more than enough for the road! Manual shift version is a dream.
Well, I own both a Boxster and a gated 360 Spider. And, I use the Boxster during the week and the Ferrari on the weekends. Yeah, cmon, the Porsche you don’t mind putting the miles on, running errands, etc, but I’m always excited to fire up the Ferrari and sing that motor to 8500 rpms with the top down-nothing any Porsche can match-well done Jay!
you start with a Jay Video and this Ferrari is just making a smile in your face and the first half minute isn't over 🥰😀
Enjoy your videos.
F355 was a tough act to follow but 360 has really grown on me. A model suited to Rosso Corsa, but also beautiful in slightly-blue Grigio Alloy.
Giallo Modena, always. 😎
@@t3hgir I’m not a yellow person but, I must admit, 360 can wear it. I don’t think any other Ferrari can - except, perhaps, an F40.
Congratulations Jayemm on the announcement of your pending marriage. I wish you nothing but good luck and love and fortune. 🙏
On the track the 981 spyder is faster than the 430
My ideal two car garage would be a 360 spider and a Boxster 987 S (with a hartech rebuild if needed). Best of both worlds.
My favourite car of all time. Been in them a few times and they’re truly special. I will have one in the next 10 years
That cheeky wink after referencing AutoAlez's 360 drama ;)
Love Ferrari's and have considered manual Ferrari 360, but stuck with Cayman, as I like to go to track days up to 10 times per season and Porsche Boxster/Cayman is better car for that. But for driving on a weekend on public road Ferrari might be more interesting option.
What a valid comparison. In other news, my Cessna 172 could never be a jet fighter.
One of the best, most beautiful and absolutely timeless cars ever made, ever. Better and more stunningly looking with each passing year. Period.
The F360 will always be a classic because it marked the peak of Ferrari elegance before the styling became a bit too aggressive (contentious comment I know), and because it was right at the inflection point between a car that was predominantly analogue, and the later cars which became increasingly digital. Bravo!
Great video on a true icon 😎 Manual with carbon buckets like this one is the dream, but people shouldn’t write off the F1 box with 'comfort' seats, I was lucky enough to have great time in one of those earlier this year 🤩
Agree on the F1 Doug
I drove a 360 at Knockhill around 13 years ago. Still, the greatest car I've ever driven.
Really woke me up when I touched a white line and the traction control woke up when I was redline in third! :)
718 Cayman GTS owner no not the 4L just the plain 2.5T but let me tell you it is a fabulous car and very very underrated.
Would suggest the owner to check the rear toe links/ball joints. Watching the rear wheel during acceleration/shifting, quite a bit of movement. Great car and review as always!
I can see myself with one of these one day. The last supercar before the BHP wars commenced.
May we never speak about that heinous overweight fake C63 ever again.
I would even say when they swapped the 6.2 to the 4.0TT...
@@DamienSLRAt least you could tune the 4.0TT, although I agree, Mercedes N/A V8’s are impossible to beat
@@DamienSLR at least the M177 sounds like thunder, are still an absolute hoot and doesn't weigh as much as a collapsed star...
And now some comments from real people:
A neighbor in the Costa del Sol had a 360 spider (red with tan interior) that was his weekend indulgence. I had always admired the 360 (the aero treatment being highly rational), but he dissuaded me because it was horrid to drive around where we lived due to the speed bumps, it guzzled fuel, and it was expensive to maintain. He didn't look as cool in it as JayEmm in this video.
How rude and ignorant! 😡
Yes, the side profile is gorgeous, sometimes I think it's even better than the regular coupe. Like a little F50 :-)
As a side note: James, your work is a piece of art. Your videos, sense of humor is superb. I'm opening YT in hope to watch your videos like going to my fav ramen izykaya to get some comfort. Thanks a lot for your work!
At 1:06 james literally says my user name out loud😊
Thanks brian
Your wrong Brian
Honda S2000 120 bhp per litre
@@SeanPensive Leave it to Honda to produce a robust, efficient engine. I was referencing a car book I still have from 2002 that claimed that about the 360, maybe the earlier s2ks didn't have as much HP? It doesn't even have the s2000 in the book, only CRX, Integra Type R, NSX, NSX Type R, and Accord Type R :)
apart from the base 718, every boxster i see makes me stop and look at it! but the ferrari will always be significantly more special and appealing
still saving up for one of these! Thank you for doing a review of the spider! Ive been waiting for you to do one
Tipo F131 V8 swap S2000 ... lol, someone put a 360 engine in a WRX so why not.
Agree, surely it's a car problem rather than a tyre problem.
Test drove one of these for an hour - lots of noise - not much go to the point it got incredibly boring after just 10 mins and no Fezza badge or howl was gonna change that
Bought a 996 turbo instead - spent some of the money I saved modding ecu, exhaust intercoolers, big brake kit, upgraded suspension which runs a stiffer setup
The car runs north of 530BHP max 1.3BAR boost with rev limiter increased to 7200rpm and sounds epic on WOT
It is way more exciting to drive than the 360 could ever be and that's not just the engine but steering brakes handling and overall feel
Though will admit both have same crappy low rent interior!
One of the most beautiful Ferraris.
I'm glad you've grown to like them Jay.
Are you still driving your 550? 😊
360 is gorgeous,is fast and expensive to run. Boxster looks pretty good, is very fast (4.00 GTS) far less expensive to run, more practical with plenty of luggage space (two boots) so not a supercar but probably a ‘better’ car!
I always loved the way the 360 looks, but goodness if it hasn't aged beautifully.
Stunning machine. 😊
I prefer the Boxster for the reliability, fuel economy, and understated looks.
MX-5 ND2 owner here. Never driven any Porsche, not to mention Ferrari. But I would like to try one day. MX-5 is such an enjoyable car to drive that I can’t imagine how good Boxter or 360 must be.
I’ve driven all three…
The others are 2 to 3 levels up
Noting wrong with an MX5.
Just a vague idea. It's not too difficult with things like this as I've researched them quite a few times.
“Starts looking on autotrader” - it’s a lot of car for the money and it sounds bliss!
The Boxster is something no Ferrari will ever be again. A sports car.
People who actually said the Porsche Boxster is a supercar = 0
I don’t think you could get a manual NSX for anywhere near Ferrari 360 money, and the auto in the NSX wasn’t performance oriented in the slightest
Great review as always, we’ve always had a soft spot for the 360.
If i had 60k to play with and really wanted a Ferrari, as much as i like the 360 I'd probably go for a California.
The 360 spider looks awesome in Tour de France blue with the Cuoio interior
Thanks for presenting a very cool car 👌 well done for buying this little gem of Ferrari heritage
I need to wait a year or two but if course by then they would have gone up more 🙃
Great video!
And the 360 is just plain beautiful!
360 Spider Grigio Alloy - (light blue)...with Black roof 👍.... would be good enough for the Original Miami Vice TV series 😎
I just fall in love with this design
Haha loved the nod and a wink to Auto Alex 🤣
Looking at the wheel shot starting at about 11:47 - does that car have a significantly worn toe link? Probably worth getting that replaced soon. That could also explain some of the cabin shudder.
Impressive, that discs and pads cost the same as on my 2003 RS6. That is to say, Audi has none of the both available anymore, so you are depending on aftermarket stuff. And the 360 is as fast as my RS6 as well, crazy!
No James, you can open the boot with a pull handle under the dash, ignition off!
Enjoyed that
Still a pre totally realistic dream to finally get a Ferrari with one
I love this car, seems to be in good order but a proper driver. Seems like it's owned by someone that likes to drive!
Who said a boxster was a supercar? No one, ever. And if someone does want a fragile money pit then a Fezza is the way to go.
You'll say this doesn't count, but the drop dead gorgeous Ferrari Spider is the 250 LWB California. Just ask James Coburn (Our Man Flint).
