CORNWALL WALK - Carbis Bay St Ives

  • A fantastic walk from Carbis Bay to St Ives. St Ives can be very busy in the summer and you could end up parking in the car park on top of the hill. We park in Carbis Bay, slightly quieter than St Ives and follow the coast path for about a mile, through pretty country lanes and across beaches to avoid the crowds.
    We visit four beaches in total along the way - which is your favourite? and enjoy everything that St Ives has to offer - history, food, shopping and more, returning on the train to Carbis Bay.

    Back in 1960 walked from St Ives via Carbis Bay to the estuary at Hayle. A man in a row boat ferried me across. In those days if I remember rightly, there was a power station on the east bank. Still love St Ives and often visit from my home near Padstow.

      There was indeed a power station there, all gone now and recently they developed a 'wave hub' centre, creating electric from wave energy. Sarah :)

    Lovely place Sarah. We went to Barbara Hepworth's sculpture garden and then a walk around but we had a job parking so would love to go back. You have shown us such a lot that we have missed. Thank you and have a good Sunday. Greetings, Julie.

      Barbara Hepworth sculpture garden was not included in this walk but we have another of the town, focussing on the history and I think we will do this in the winter - a winter walk in St Ives! Will be quite a contrast! Sarah :)

    What a fantastic beach that is! One of the many things I like about the channel is, the opportunity for us to each places that, if I am honest, we will never get to visit ourselves (too far to travel), so this is the next best thing. Fish n chips and a cider, perfect for me, what a great day! Our local for sea and fish n chips is Whitby, which is about 50 minutes away and a place we both love, although, after watching this, I would gladly swap you a day..... great advert for St Ives, cheers Alan

    Hi Sarah & Andrew, thanks for another superb walk. Stunning beaches and scenery - the depth and clarity of colour there never ceases to amaze. Now we know your recently changed channel image is the old pier - John was curious! As usual, Andrew made us smile - Pollocks! Thanks again.

      10/10 for spotting the pier!! I really loved the old picture and it needed to be something special to take it's place - incredibly difficult because it take such a thin slither of the full image! Sarah :)

    The path between Carbis Bay to St Ives is my favourite walk in the world. We go to St Ives every June and the last few years we have stayed in a holiday home, called Tremorva, which is located just above the narrow lane at 2:20, (This part is called Hain Walk).
    We do this walk into St Ives nearly every day!!! We usually either get the bus back up the hill or walk via the road. Occasionally, if we're feeling brave we will walk via the coast path but that slope is steep!
    We're back down there in about eight weeks and am bingeing on St Ives videos at the moment as I can't wait to be there again!

    • @CornishWalkingTrails
      @CornishWalkingTrails  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this walk, both winter and summer it is a great way to get to St Ives! A bus back is a great idea as, like you say, it is a steep slope! Enjoy your next visit! Sarah :)

      I can relate! Andrew says,"Let's go filming, I can record the football and watch it later!" We went out while the group stage was playing and he was told the score! We also went out when the England played Sweden on the quarter finals and he could hear all the cheers in the pubs!! We stayed at home for the semi!! Not watched Wimbledon this year - the weather has been too great to miss! Just had a week's annual leave and will be cooped up in the office until Christmas now! :( Sarah xx

    Really truly awesome views of the bay and sea. You can't possibly get fed up there. You captured the spirit of the beaches - I loved the feel of it. It sure was a tasty lunch and day out amid the streets also. Many homes empty out of season it would appear. Good on you for using the train. Adds to an already great day. Take care. Mark

      @CornishWalkingTrails  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could quite happily lose a couple of hours just sitting on the beach and never get bored! It's a lot quieter in winter and there have been a few changes to the rules regarding second homes, not sure if it has worked though! Sarah :)

      Yes, Sarah I resonate with your love for the beach. As for home ownership it's the cornerstone of a capitalist society. It's like the disparity will grow before anything changes. I'm not a fanatic it's just the way it is. Peace!

I'm with Andrew btw...modern art??...no clue!! Now't like fish and chips at the seaside! (although serving them in a wok is sacrilegious in my Yorkshire eyes!! ) Thanks for the great tour!! :-))

    Hello Sarah and Andrew!! Loooove the video, St.Ives is absolutely stunning,such raw beauty . The water was so clear and beautiful, do you happen to know what the water temperature gets at it’s warmest?? I don’t think I would care either way,I would still have to take a splash anyway lol. The rock bed looked really cool, my Jake would spend hours there as he has such a liking for rocks . The chapel was in absolute perfect location ,such a peaceful spot. And that lunch looked scrumptious, nothing like fresh seafood and cider 😁Sarah ,I absolutely adored that necklace ,I’ve never come across one like that, I am always on the lookout for unique necklaces to dress up even a t-shirt if going somewhere that I feel need a little something extra!! Have a great weekend and thank you sooo much for the time that you put into making the videos, I cannot wait to visit!! Sending happiness your way from Ohio,Lori

      The water is quite cold, about 18 degrees by the end of August. Of course the little pools in the sun are much warmer than the actual sea! Thanks for posting this, another lovely video. St Ives is a very special and beautiful place; I often do this walk, but starting at Lelant Saltings. The beaches at Lelant, Carbis Bay & St Ives itself are wonderful. Did you know that Carbis Bay beach is quite radioactive, due to mine waste from Wheal Providence contaminating the beach centuries ago? The background radiation there is about 6 x the national average, so a day on the beach there is apparently like having a dental x-ray! But much more fun!

    • @CornishWalkingTrails
      @CornishWalkingTrails  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL! I love it! I have seen some of the old photos showing the mine buildings but looks like a different place today! At low tide, on a spring tide, you can see the remains of a wooden hull, a ship wreck and walk to Porthkidney beach, another beautiful place! Sarah :)

    • @cebusapella9125
      @cebusapella9125 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sarah, yes I've noticed the stumps of wood poking out of the beach at very low tide there - just looked it up and it's apparently the SS Vulture which was wrecked on November 18th 1893 in a ferocious gale that destroyed 5 ships in the St Ives area. It was known as the Cintra Gale after another ship, the Cintra, which ran aground on Porthminster beach. Isn't the internet wonderful for finding out such amazing facts? I also googled "walks with a shipwreck in Cornwall" and I discovered on the iwalkcornwall.co.uk website a list of walks which feature shipwrecks!
