Mermaid of Zennor CORNISH WALK

  • Our beautiful County has lots of legends, myths and fairy tales. One of the most famous is the mermaid of Zennor!
In our video today we explore the coastline near Zennor, going to Pendour Cove where the legend began! Experience the drama and remoteness of this special part of Cornwall with its pale grey rocks and jagged, tall cliffs that tumble to the sea.
When we filmed this video, the sea was sparkling in the watery sunshine like camera flashes, calm and beautiful, it belies its potential to be savage and unforgiving!
A short, but beautiful 2.5 mile circular walk with a pub at the end - perfect!! And many thanks to Randon Dave for buying us some beers in the pub - Cheers!

This has made me want to go to Zennor and do that walk again. It is one of my favourite areas of West Cornwall. Not many people know this and maybe I should not be revealing it here, but there is a way down to Veor Cove next to Pendour. It is not sign posted and the path is hard to find but it is quite easy to get to the cove and you can have it to yourself even on a sunny summer's day. While I was watching your video I had a thought. It would be excellent if you could use a drone on some of your walks so people can see a birds eye view of the area. Good luck with your thousand miles target Sarah!

I just read The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd about a fictional monastery in South Carolina, but based a bit on the mermaid chair in Cornwell. I googled "mermaid chair, Cornwall" and found your video. I love that you ask, "Are we going the right way?" which is the question I have asked when I hiked in the Lake District and Cotswolds (I thought it was because I was not British that I didn't quite get the directions). I still hope to come to Cornwall some day. This video was a treat! Thank you.

Once public transit less iffy (half-masked strangers crowding onto trains/buses amidst pandemic spike) & beaches/parks/watering holes can safely reopen, I'll embark upon some short coastal paths, increasing distance incrementally until pre-knee surgery stamina regained. I love his humour and the way she describes everything in such a poetic, beautiful way. Best of both worlds. My heart started racing when I saw the cows. I would be a nervous wreck but could brave the field if I was with someone confident enough. Quick question though, is there an alternate route around that field if there are calves? What about if you a dog? Some dogs may be triggered by the cows, I suppose?

It's a beautiful fairy tale of course! Land of legend myth and mystery. Haven't done the whole of that walk due to a lot of climbing but have done part of it and Zennor is just fab. Daughter was on that very bus (at the end of the vid) earlier this year! However, the driver came round one of those bends rather sharply and knocked a cyclist off, luckily not hurt, but they are definitely very narrow hairy bends for sure. One of the prettiest drives from St. Just to St. Ives via Zennor in Cornwall (and there's a Cream Tea halfway along which is definitely worth a stop for!). Lovely vid. x J x

Zennor was another mining area as well as farming. Where you came inland from the coast with the house at the top of the cliffs, you were on the site of the Carnelloe Mine. The house was part of the mine complex, perhaps the Count House.

I watched this video a few weeks ago and found it very interesting. This week I got a new book on my Kindle, The House at Mermaid's Cove by Lindsay Jayne Ashford only to discover that she mentions a church with a choir stall that has a mermaid carved into it. As the Title of the book suggests, the story is set in Mermaid's Cove, in Cornish that's Porthmorvoren. I've been looking at the estuary of the Helford River where the events supposedly took place but couldn't find anything, so it's obviously fictitious. But I was drawn to find out what happens. The year is 1943 and there's a very good storyline so far. I'm a quarter of the way into the book at the moment but I thought it might be of interest to other viewers of Sara and Andrew's brilliant videos.
