"You can't say that, in St Ives!" Is it worth visiting St Ives? A historical Town walk, Cornwall

  • NB: We filmed this walk prior to the lockdown rules coming into force.
Follow us as we use a Bob Acton walking guide to explore St Ives!
Bob Acton was a local author writing detailed history books, mostly focussed on Cornish Mining. This walk tells us all about history of St Ives, dusted with details that we have been guilty of walking past without a second thought - do you know where they used to dye cloth in St Ives?
A beautiful sunny spring day is the backdrop for our stroll through the narrow, winding streets, visiting Porthmeor Beach and St Nicholas Chapel. Busy and bustling, even out of season, St Ives is a wonderful place to visit.
NB: We have had a lot of comments pulling us up on the way I pronounced 'Digey'. This has lead to some 'ugly' comments which we have deleted. We are both Cornish and since making videos for our channel, we have discovered that simply 'being Cornish' does not mean that you are able to correctly pronounce every place name or street name in Cornwall, only that you are better equipped than most to have a good stab at it. We apologise for any mispronunciation and would appreciate a little tolerance and no more ugly comments. Many thanks Sarah

Love Bob Acton i have many of my Dad's books glad to see it here! The Digey is pronounced " The Die-gee😊 as a native it's amazing how many different versions i've heard! Also you walked right past the famous dance hall opposite Barbara Hepworth house, it still has the same public looking frontage and was said to have the best sprung floor in the west! Then it became a storage place for Barbara Hepworth's sculptures, guess what it is now.... Flats... Please visitors and second home owners stay away, until the pandemic is truly over then St Ives will welcome you back. Thank you.

I was in St Ives that weekend and then moved on to Padstow midweek. It was a bit surreal as we knew that the Corona virus was taking hold. I have being visiting St Ives since 1976 and it has suffered change far less then many places. I do miss The Hobblers restaurant that used to be on the Harbourside though. Parking just gets worse and they have now moved the park and ride to St Earth. Your video is great and I agree with you about the Barbara Hepworth sculptures Andrew, sorry. The Newlyn school of impressionism is more my thing. I love Fore Street and the Harbour, I love it all really. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Great video of beautiful St Ives. I got lost at exactly the same place! Must be a problem with the directions, but as you know I'm a big Bob Acton fan, he takes you to places other walk books don't. In the same book there's a fantastic walk round Hayle, which I'd always thought of as not a particularly attractive town, but his walks really bring such places to life! Many thanks.

    Great informative video.
I love St Ives and been quite a few times.
Wish I had heard of that book as I would have done the same as you both.
Just a tip for family's with kids (or adults that are kids).
I had to pause this video at 2:52 for that gorgeous view of St Ives, but if you look at the right hand side, just past the lighthouse and you can see a rock sticking out of the sea?
Well between the lighthouse and that rock are some fantastic rock pools with loads of life in them to look at when the tide is out.
I found them at the end of my holiday and I can't wait to go back and explore them further.
So Great video and loads of things I never knew.
The first time we stayed there was in a street called Teetotal Street which I think they had to rename after we stayed there 🤣 🤣 🤣 .

I think what Andrew was heard to mutter after finding the parking ticket, was a little less than heavenly though! I do sympathise, we have run out of time in car parks in the past too! A few years ago I was working in a shop on Fore St in St Ives when this posh London family came in and asked what life was really like living in St Ives because they were planning on moving down. I looked at them straight in the face and said "Drink and drugs!" They laughed, thinking I was joking. When they realised I wasn't, they said "But it doesn't say anything about that in the brochures!"
Its wonderful that people who work hard and pay extortionate prices should experience all the good of St Ives, but its such a different world when you live there. Most crimes don't get reported because the Police want to keep crime figures low to keep attracting the wealthy second home owner market.

Thank you for taking me back to beautiful St. Ives. Thank you! I have stayed there 4 times for several nights at the time. But it takes time to explore and, you show me a lot of new streets and details, and I love that you give so many facts about what you see. I have also understood earlier, to my great dismay, that Norway doesn't have a square there at all ;-) It is just lazy pronunciation by the St. Ivians (or what they are called...) :-) I was a bit extra intrigued by the book title, as I have "climbed" Trencrom Hill on our way along St. Michael's Way from Marazion to St. Ives. We saw both sides of the peninsula West Penwith from there. I actually have both Godrevy Lighthouse and St. Michael's Mount on the same photo ;-)

Another brilliant video from you both! Even though I have been visiting St Ives since I was a kid, I saw more of it in your video than I ever did in all the years I have been visiting the place! ( and that is more than 50! ) A question for you:- Do you know what happened to the fish and chip restaurant that was along The Wharf a hundred yards from the Sloop Inn? - I used to go up some stairs inside the entrance to get into it. The restaurant part was on the second floor. It had approx 15 tables, and about 6 of them were by the window, which gave magnificent views across the harbour and bay. The last time I was in it was a few years ago, and fresh cod and chips was around £6 which included bread and a cup of tea. I think it was called "The Kingfisher" not sure. When I was in St Ives in March I was looking for it, but in the area where I thought it was there is now a posh fish and chips restaurant which is expensive. The fish and chips was nice, but half the portion size of The Kingfisher, and twice as expensive! I wish they would not change everything in St Ives trying to go "upmarket". I preferred it the way it was, with affordable things for the locals as well as the tourists. I used to laugh at some of the street names in St Ives as a teenager. Virgin Street and Court Cocking were 2 of them. And also Sarah, don't take any notice of ugly comments that some idiots might post. How anyone could moan about your videos about such a beautiful place is beyond me. Social media like Facebook and Twitter are full of people attacking everyone, and now it has spread it's virus onto TH-cam! I even had nasty comments on my little TH-cam channel as well which I deleted. Much love to you both, keep calm and carry on making your great videos!! Bob :) x x x

Those wardens are pretty quick in St. Ives. The only thing quicker are the gulls nicking your chips. People , you have been warned!!!!

Another great video👍although I think that it was a really bad idea for that church to use gravestones as a walk path👎that is very disrespectful to those dead people!

The presenter Sarah was excellent....very photogenic, interesting and funny. Actually the most important parts of SI were missed; not your fault Sarah; just not mentioned in that book you had. You'll have fun finding out what they are. How do I know? I lived in St Ives for decades and wrote a book on the HMS Wave incident in 1952......one of the things you guys missed!
But hey.............I liked this video, is all!

Thanks for your comment! We love our old Bob Acton books; there was plenty of info in there that we didn't add to the video. Andrew was aware of the HMS Wave but not sure if it is mentioned in the Acton book. Sarah :)

Taxi driver in Bodmin told me a few months back that some people who visit Cornwall are a joke. He says they come down once a year on holiday, then act like they know everything and everyone as if they were locals. Embarrassing really. All these dreamers who cant afford to move there.

Once all else is forgotten concerning life in the pandemic, we will be left with annoying disclaimers like that heading this video.

    • @CornishWalkingTrails
      @CornishWalkingTrails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, the disclaimer was placed at the front so that I can remove it by trimming the video when all of this is over. Unfortunately, we are threatened by viewers with being reported without it at the moment. It seems we are caught between a rock and a hard place, Sarah
