    Thanks for your video. I visited there for the first time a few days ago and will be moving there next month to check it out as a more permanent place to live. I found Kampot to be fairly inviting with a more "up and coming" vibe too. Looking forward to being there.

      Has it worked out? I might explore there next year. Not sure I can take the heat or Chinese expansion.

      @@ExpatGringo It's worked out great for me. It all depends on what you're looking for and the environment your used to. Best to come and check it out for yourself for a month or three. Good luck.

    Just arrived 2 weeks ago. Compared to 8 years ago it is much cleaner and the food quality improved a lot! Laid back, easy, friendly people, good mix of locals, tourists, backpacker & expats!

    I lived there around 7 years ago for 4 months and first time visited there in 2000. Places always change. Living there I found it rather nice to explore areas around there and there is nice nature with no people about but socially I found it rather not interesting as the local expats life tends to revolve around bars ( I don't drink) and the local Khmer although friendly enough I tried and failed to make any lasting connections. Actually I would prefer to live in PP rather than Kampot as its more interesting. I also found the food to be rather expensive if you want to eat some quality. The architecture is quite nice and if passing thru as you are its a great stop along the way...

    Good video and great perspective. I will be exploring Kampot next year as a potentisl retirement place. The heat might be prohibitive. What does your crystal ball suggest the chances are of the Chinese expanding into Kampot and driving us out?
    Thanks!

      Thanks. I reckon the Cambodian government will try to focus Chinese investment into Sihanoukville for the foreseeable future as it's a large task to develop the city into the kind of place they want it to be. Kampot should remain ok, though probably it will keep expanding to some degree from Cambodians continuing to move there. They've finished building the riverfront beach now, & have started building a nearby seashore beach as well.

    Your presentation makes sense. I came here too with bus from Phnom Penh 10 years ago. There were quite a few hotels and guesthouses then but not that many food places. Tha place was lovely then. And is was catered to by european teachers and the like.

    I was there in 2003 and there was already an ex pat community. Tourists, hotels and some foreign owned restaurants and bars on the waterfront.

      2003 or 2013? I was first there in 2012 & there was very little ex-pat goings on.

    Great video
    So which do you think is better for an ex pat retiring from Australia, kampot and the beaches and islands of kep or the more things going on at seim rep? Keeping in mind getting to kampot is only 8 hrs by bus from seim reap so doable for get aways.
    Cheers ... dwayne from Australia

      Difficult question to answer because a lot of it depends on personal tastes. I'd probably prefer Phnom Penh & have breaks along the coast at Kampot & thereabouts as well as trips to Siem Reap & other places, plus trips to neighbor countries. If you haven't checked out the places you are considering yet I'd say do that & then see how you feel. It's always good to have a plan B too, & an exit strategy, & some idea of how long you'd want to spend retired in the region.

    I have been viewing many videos of Battambang recently, and I see that Kampot is much quieter than Battambang, both in terms of noise of passing 2- and 4-wheel vehicles and the general ambiance. I was interested in B because my first wife's Vietnamese grandfather was a district chief under the French regime in the 1930s, and because it appeared much more laid back than Phenom Penh.

    I tried moving to kampot. I lasted just over two months. I was sick nearly the entire time. I would not recommend this place if you have health concerns. The health care here is horrible.

    • @SeekeroftheWay-qt5kj
      @SeekeroftheWay-qt5kj  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a good thing to mention as a lot of people dream of retiring in this part of the world and assume their health will not change much due to age.
