  • Call-centre slavery, scams, ghost towers, muggings - so many troubles have beset this idyllic coastal town over the years. Once so popular on the backpacker trail boasting many lovely beaches of its own, & with its gorgeous islands nearby, it was almost taken over by Chinese money & turned into a dodgy casino crime ridden hotspot. The roads were all ripped up, & the foreigners all left apart from those Chinese involved in gambling & call centers. But the government took notice & cracked down hard on crime & got the streets fixed up. It's a new era in Sihanoukville. Join me in this episode of Seeker of the Way as we see what is left of the good old days, if the bad old days have finished, & what direction this prime spot along the Cambodian riviera is heading.

It was a beautiful paradise in the late 60s,what it is now isn't remotely comparable.

Nice video. I was there in 2001. Stayed in the Seaside Hotel right behind the beach. Cant believe how its changed. 8 dollars for a taxi ride....... I had a guy waiting 24 hours a day outside the hotel for 5. Beer was a dollar a can. Was a laid back place but like the rest of SE Asia has moved on.

As a Cambodian regular, it's such a pitty Sihanoukville is being ruined by the Chinese with ulterior motives.

Crazy what happened there. My travel history in Sihanoukville lines up with yours and it was quite enjoyable early last decade with just a tiny bit of construction. Just looked up the place of my former hotel but it too was replaced by a Chinese casino hotel.

That part of Cambodia is out of control, unorganized, and some what abandoned. The government must revamp all abandoned structures leftover by previous uncontrolled construction boom.

I used to live on the hill back in the early 2000s , it was a wonderful place with a great vibe. I can't believe the state of it now, what an absolute mess.
Also stayed at the mealy chenda many times, it was a good guest house with a decent restaurant and a really nice sunset bar up top .
    Thanks for the video .

I used to love going to Sihanoukville around 2000. Nothing but absolutely deserted beaches and no construction

The story of the town should be: How to ruin a sleepy, hippy, backpacker-paradise town. Wow! That place has turned into a distopian nightmare, especially with all of those unfinished- deteriorating-highrise buildings!

Sihanoukville is still a beautiful city and not a ghost town. The Beach in front of those poor shape guesthouse was bought up and built up with nicer high-rise hotel. The city just become too expensive for a bunch of cheap backpackers. In fact, the beach is much cleaner today than it was. Backpacker has to spend two or three time more money to stay in Sihanoukville than to stay in another Cambodia beach town. Afterall, Sihanoukville is still the best sandy beach to have a nice long walk along the beach from your hotel room within Cambodia.

i havent been there since 2016 looks very different. Im probably going back to retire there but its unrecognizable to me. Im surprosed in the market the gold shops have no armed security. from memory all the gold shops would have a sleepy guard with a sidearm. Both those gold shops i couldnt see a guard.

    WARNING: THE TRUTH
As if the Cambodian people haven't suffered enough. . . The Cambodian People know their Govt has shafted them . . . allowing the Chinese to build 60 casinos plus a long runway for military aircraft. The Govt took the money but the people will pay the price!
In 2018 I was disgusted with building rubble just dumped in fields around the town. Later a 6 storey building collapsed killing some workers. AVOID Sihanoukville.

Greed of money is what these people are about.I saw it as it was before the civil war even started and it is heartbreaking to see what it has now become.

What a dump! Greed and overdevelopment has destroyed what was once regarded as a top travel destination. A strong pro active mayor may be able to turn it around but I have my doubts.

i dont mind low quality rooms... i hate grime. The bed bugs wont mind. update us if you got lots of bites. If you paid $10 last time and $15 this time... that is less than the massive increase in fuel prices.

$10 is plenty.....if you do some research!
I've made multiple visits to Cambodia over the last 15 years or so...including to Sihanoukville when it was Sleepyhippytown!
I won't be going back, sadly.
I've been in Siem Reap for 2 years and I'm off to Kampot next month, where I have a guest house booked for a couple of nights (for $10!) while I look for long-term accommodation.
Definitely one of my favourite countries.
