      While I'm arguably not exactly a fan... Nor was I particularly fond of concerts either, I'm definitely NOT sorry for having twice gone to see Queen... Many bands and musicians didn't and don't make a concert so very much different from just a live album recital... BUT Queen was an experience!
      They deliberately played a little different Live than for the studios and albums, and Mercury once explained it, "Why would anyone pay more money to go listen to a song they've already got on album??? We have to change it a bit to be worth that money, the waiting, the drive... just to see us in concert."
      Only a few bands ever really did that... BUT it's what arguably still makes Queen THE best ever... Even if I don't quite fit the bill as a "fan"... haha ;o)

      @@TitularHeroine I'm a much more hard-core metal fan... I'll mosh with just about anybody, and Manowar and AC/DC can blare any time of day or night as far as I'm concerned...
      Don't get me wrong. I can appreciate Queen, and all... BUT if you've ever spent much time with a "True blue, dyed in the wool" type of Freddie Mercury fan, you'd understand why I suggest that I'm not quite a Fanatic, myself... I can even appreciate some country, and Johnny Cash was most frequently great in his time... BUT that doesn't mean I'm going to be out two-steppin' any time soon either... Some songs are great, regardless of their genre... Others are just more album filler...
      That's how I see it, anyway. You don't have to be a fan to appreciate it for what it is... AND Mercury was great, quantifiably so...
      BUT there are just days when Queen can come on the radio/TV/etc... and I'm just like... oh god... not today... ;o)

    • @TitularHeroine
      @TitularHeroine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gnarthdarkanen7464 Ah, I see. Totally relatable.
      (It's kinda funny too that whenever $#!+ like this comes up, the phrase is ALWAYS "even some country..." Country fans seem to be only country, while listeners with broad range always take the piss out of it) 😂

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TitularHeroine Well as far back as the Johnny Cash show there's been at least a pseudo-rivalry between country and rock genres...
      Though Cash is both in the Country AND in the Rock n Roll halls of fame... haha
      Some of his antics back in the day poking fun at Elvis (specifically and spectacularly) are still hilarious... if you care to hunt the clips...
      SO being a die hard metal-head, I can still enjoy whatever else if it suits me. It's all opinionated anyways, and I can live with that... Just because I grew up on the likes of Haggar, Cheap Trick, and even as far as the Blue Oyster Cult doesn't mean I can't get what an experience is when it's Queen or ELO... Great shows are still pretty great shows.
      BUT yeah, some Country fans are almost insufferable... just like some Mercury fans... Maybe every fandom has a few of those.
      In any case, every genre manages something redeemable at least, and downright great once in a while. ;o)

    A friend of mine is a drummer, and he said the biggest secret about musicians is that they are in generally nerds.... As you have to be a bit of the same type of person who likes logic and repeating something again and again and again for years on end. So not that surprised that a lot of musicians also have academic careers.

    Kevin: Thanks. Danny. That'll get the episode rolling.
    - 30 days later -
    Simon: Thanks for the script Kevin [5 min side rant] right what are we talkin' about? [Launch into first paragraph] Oh! This is going to get us demonetised! [More side ranting]

    Regarding that tangent about not caring for concerts and the whole scene, Simon... I'm arguably similar... BUT there have been (and are still) a few exceptions worthy of note. Most musicians, both solo artists and groups do concerts very much the same, and it's an old hat to go to a "Live Album Recital"... Sure, it's okay if you're really into a given band or singer, whatever... BUT for many of us, it's a financial question about WHY I'd willingly pay more for a ticket to hear/see a one-time show that's exactly like the album I just bought at a tenth of the cost...
    However, certain bands don't just blindly cover their original works in so many syllables. Queen was INFAMOUS for messing around on the stage and giving a completely different experience LIVE than you could ever get out of an album. Freddie Mercury (RIP) even explained that he wanted to make the tickets WORTH going after, even when you already had all the songs on album, so that was deliberate... NOT to mention that there's something completely experiencial about seeing him storming around the stage with half a microphone stand flailing around in his hands... It was truly an experience I'm glad to have gotten to see, and I kind of regret not going more, though I simply couldn't afford to...
    Manowar, while metal as f***, are one of few American Bands who could even travel to Europe and find a following in the day... Yet, they translated one of their songs to German, and I got to be in the stands in Italy, when they barely started playing, and the ENTIRE CROWD immediately broke into song FOR THEM... Let that sink in just a bit... An American Singer standing there with the microphone held out to an Italian crowd all singing a song IN GERMAN... rather than sing, himself...
    Things like that don't happen when you sit at home and listen to speakers or headphones...
    Electric Light Orchestra, Stevie Ray Vaughan (who had Hendrix's Waa-Waa Pedal), Van Halen's famous Volcanic guitar solos, and Metalica's ability to cluster millions of audience members to the utter shut-down of Moscow's traffic are just a few situations that I think even you could understand and enjoy as the mind-boggling talents and skills that they were/are... to name a few.
    It might not be my usual cup of tea, admittedly... BUT I can certainly find the enjoyment when a concert reaches potentials as a SHOW over just an album recital... I've honestly been privileged to witness a few moments in music history, and even mildly lament that younger/newer audiences might not get to enjoy them as I had when I was younger... ;o)

And sadly, it's not just athletes, as a majority of lottery winners usually end up worse off than they were before as well.

I didn't need to hear him saying the wrong band name to know he'd been looking at the wrong wikipedia page. He might have been in Dare too, but it would have been his time in D:Ream that would have rung the bells for someone of Simon's age.

I knew it'd probably ruin my cast but it was worth it! Was right up front at a small indoor venue that was standing only. And with an orchestra at a performing arts center. Talk about someone that has variety and really knows music. He's great at promoting arts funding for schools too.

    19:45 I had a high school teacher who taught both Multicultural Studies and AP Psychology - when it comes to "real world philosophizing", this dude was the genuine article. I swear, this dude has done IT ALL, and through all of his travels had likely circled the entire Earth 3 or 4 times. If there's anyone who would fit that bill, it'd be him.
    From my rough memory of what he told us, after having graduated from the same high school that we were at, way back in the 70s or so, he then decided to go to California where he ended up, through a chain of events, becoming a key witness in the FBI breaking a massive pyramid scheme (he even had to go in protective custody because there were threats against his life). To get away from all of that, he decided to then move to INDIA to become a Buddhist Monk in a monastery up in the Himalayas, where he stayed for a few years until, one day, the Indian government decided they didn't want foreigners there for one reason or another, and were forcefully evicted by the Indian military. He then decided to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, then go to Mecca, tour around Europe, before moving back to the United States and working as doctor in a *mental asylum*, where he met some genuinely INSANE individuals. After all of that, he decided to move back to his home town, and teach at the same high school he graduated from.
    We could tell that he wasn't bullshitting, as he had souvenirs of his various sojourns on display in his classroom; he had his Buddhist monk robes on a mannequin in the corner, an authentic Muslim prayer rug that he bought in Mecca hung on one wall, a (genuine) Ojibwe dreamcatcher hung up by the white board, a little figurine of the Buddha on his desk, and photo albums of his travels. He retired a year before I graduated, and said that he would be chronicling his life's journey in a book; if I recall correctly, it's titled something akin to, _"The Incredible Adventures of an American Monk"_ , written by Don Daniels.
