    The problem with Romeo and Juliet is a 16th century tragedy romance. Back then suffering or dying for or because of love was a prerequisite to calling something romantic. This has drifted over time and we all know what romances look like now. So yes, Romeo and Juliet is extremely romantic, in the origonal meaning of the word.
    Also, if Romeo's and Juliet's families didn't have a stupid feud over nothing, the kids would have no reason to kill themselves and the pleasure of growing up and realising how stupid marying at the age was.

    Not a movie, but I like how Green Eggs and Ham is a children's book about how if someone is trying to get you to do something you don't want to do, you should cave in if they pester you enough.

    • @darkermatter125.35
      @darkermatter125.35 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      100% giving off rapey vibes in that book lol. But it ALSO sounds like a ton of the "how I met your grandparent" stories. It is always "well, she said no, but I went and asked her out over and over for months, and she finally gave in. Now we are married!" And on her side it is "after he asked me for months, he wore me down, so I just gave up and went. Then we ended up married."
      No REALLY didn't mean no then... aside from when it was a white woman and the man was a POC. Then even consent could be a no for everyone else, and could end in death. You know, the good old days.

    • @Fabala827
      @Fabala827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The messed up nature of some “classic” kids’ books could be it’s own whole video lol.
      How about The Rainbow Fish, which is ostensibly about not being conceited & acting like you’re better than everyone else, and also you should share; but is really “if you give people presents they’ll stop hating you!”
      Or The Giving Tree, which is supposedly about generosity or something? But is really just a picture of incredibly terrible boundaries and how you should give away literally every part of yourself in the hopes that 80 years later, that person will come back and apologize/thank you, before using you as a literal stool 😂

      @@bluelightningnz clearly you do not know how complex dr. Seuss books can get... he discusses the pointlessness of war in some cases, discrimination in many different forms, silencing minorities, conservation, ect.
      He also has a dark series of books with dark art that isn't well known. But a lot of his books aren't as simple as they seem. ESPECIALLY when you combine all of them and look at them for an overarching message.
      So I would encourage you to use a different book if you need an entire book to get your kids to try new foods. Only because consent isn't taught, and people are often told to ignore the concept. So to have a book like that read that young might not be ideal.

    • @TitularHeroine

      @@Fabala827 I've always seen The Giving Tree more as: a caregiver will always love their child, wherever the child is or the person they grow to become and across time. The tree giving literal parts of itself is just a metaphor easily illustrated in a children's book.

      Mercutio, in the play, IS mad… his soliloquy suggests that he cannot control his thoughts. Whilst I was surprised to enjoy the version , I did think that the automatic jump from “mad” character to stereotype of (drug pushing) drag queen was somewhat typical of Hollywood - Let’s NOT give a marginalised section of society positive representation, seemed to be the thinking here. Also, the end just made me think of that quote, “Man cannot very much bear reality”… they DIE in the play but the film has a stupid montage of their romance to make audiences forget the leads carked it.

    Kevin, fantastic as usual. I think another one that would be interesting (but it could be just me) along these lines are people who get the EXACT OPPOSITE message from movies. Like people who join the military after watching Full Metal Jacket, despite it being clearly anti war/imperialism (and had to do a toned down version of the Vietnam war to get the message across).

And aside from Emma Thompson's scene when she finds out Rickman is cheating - that scene is genuinely great - the rest is trite and everyone in the film acts superficially and selfishly, and everyone is acting out of lust and baseless infatuation.

    Romeo and Juliet, the play, was a cautionary tale of tragedy. It warned of the impulsive nature of teenagers, but it was also about a feud between families that may have been common in feudal times.
    You cannot judge the story by today's standards, as mideval marriage was not about love, 18 wasn't a set in stone age that defined when sex is legal, and many other reasons.
    Also it was a play that takes place over 5 days but is based on a novel that takes place over a much longer period of time.

    Maybe, I'm just nitpicking here, but I always interpreted Romeo and Juliet as Shakespeare's commentary on the rashness of young lovers. Romeo makes a bunch of very rash decisions that get him and Juliet killed by the end. It's similar to Antony and Cleopatra which Marc Antony makes rash decisions because of Cleopatra's control on him and loses to Octavius. Poor decision-making due to judgment be clouded by lust is a common theme in Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet was never intended to be a love story in the way we think about it

    Thank god someone agrees with me about how unromantic Romeo and Juliet is. In truth the actual moral of the story is about two warring houses and the damage it causes. The romance was just a way to bring in more than just men, and the rude nature of it talking about Juliet is a way to keep the men interested during those parts. it is why there was a dwarf/elf romance in the Hobbit movie, rather than staying true to the source material. it also explains the over sexualization of both men and women in movies, because it touches the basest instincts and keeps people interested who would normally not be. it is also why a lot of kid's shows and movies have jokes for the parents, because parents are far less likely to watch something that is just for kids, or let their kids watch something they just find annoying. IE: in Ed Edd and Eddie where there were Crumpled up tissues under Eddie's bed and magazines on the ground. something a kid would not catch onto but the parents would.

I interpreted the ending as a commentary on mankind's inability to find a reasonable middle road, going from tyranny to anarchy in short order because our individual selfishness is just that great. We can only seem to work with one overpowering tyrant or a thousand equally-powerful tyrants, and both lead to misery.

    These movies were all comedies, except for Romeo & Juliet which is a tragedy. They were never meant to convey a moral message. (Especially not a Pee-wee Herman movie.)
    That being said, 40 Days and 40 Nights is completely horrible and I remember being actually _angry_ at the stupidity of the premise when it came out (oh no, you have to go a _whole forty days_ without sex, you poor little boy, because most people have _never_ had to go forty days without having sex.) Love Actually really is totally creepy and messed up.
    And Romeo & Juliet really, really does get a seriously misplaced veneration for being romantic, when it's really a tragedy about how stupid teenagers are are, especially spoiled rich kids, and _especially_ especially when it comes to their kind of shallow "love" that would have only lasted a few more days before they got bored with each other, if they hadn't killed themselves out of pure stupidity. How anyone can find it romantic rather than infuriating is beyond me.
