Land Rovers DO NOT leak! Said no one ever... 😜

  • G'day friends
    Another technical mid week video.
    We can honestly say that for 4.5 years we travelled the world in a Land Rover Defender that had no oil leaks.
    Unfortunately our luck had run out and after leaving some oil spots on my parents driveway that became small puddles after a few weeks it was time to investigate.
    We removed the transfer case at our good friend Jimmy's place and replaced all seals and the output shaft.
    Thank you Jimmy and Mark for helping out on this big job.
    Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
    In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.

    Yes the rubber lip seals fail over time, it's just a fact of life, I've got swivel housing kits on order as my front diff keeps overfilling with grease. Paper gaskets and no thread sealant on all bolts is a sure way to enjoy more friend time. Ashcrofts themselves recommend tossing most of the paper gaskets unless you are wanting to keep all the factory leaks.

    you have some good karma to have mates like that. And yes, Landies leak like a bad faucet, but that's how we keep the rust down on everything.

    There are 2 o rings on a selector shaft that leak. The problem is the housing wears oval so replacing the orings only works for a short time . You need to machine the housing and install some bronze bushes that will last a lifetime.

    My transfer box started leaking a while ago but I discovered it was because it was full of oil. Once all the oil had run out the leak stopped - problem solved!

    • @AJB1
      @AJB1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The transfer box was the only bit of my old series 3 that didn't need topping up with EP90 on a regular basis. But I think that was just because the main box leaked into it faster than it could leak the oil out again...

    Your mate might want to re-evaluate how he thinks the LT230 works... His front and rear drive gears are actually High and low range gears! The diff lock is taken care of in a different part of the box and is not effected by what ratio range it is in. Also it's sealant for the box not gaskets, if you use gaskets you are going to have issues with the bearing preloads. Electrical connections are Diff lock, high/low switch, speed sensor and IF fitted an overheat temp switch on the left flank that is normally a V8 "hot country" version only, not tdci.
    Ashcroft mk 1 (blue) shaft all leak as o-rings don't have enough movement in them, That shaft needs movement as not 100% aligned with the transfer box. There are better ways to do this with a different flexible shaft, NOT solid.
    Flange nut is 148nm NOT 160nm, that is too much and will prematurely fail the bearings! (which I think you'll suffere a lot as not getting any of the torque settings correctly specified!)
    Happy to supply the corrrect manual if you ask!

    • @chrisstreet6827
      @chrisstreet6827 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      THIS ^^^ all of this - get the gaskets off and a decent silicone sealer or you will end up with rattly shagged bearings. Been there myself, got one where someone fitted gaskets to stop the leaks and didnt realise why Landrover did it the way they do...

    99% of the time, its the inspection cover, or output seals. Most of the time, you don't have to take it out to fix it.

  • @jensstrang1501

    Happy New Year.
    I had done all that last year and dierekt the oil seal from the crankshaft.
    Plus clutch with everything that goes with it.
    For the transfer box there is a new side cover, differently shaped, thereby you get ca.0.75L more oil pure.
    This helps with possible problems with heat.

  • @thomasbeer4220
    @thomasbeer4220 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You probably already know, but those Ashcroft output shafts are designed to weep oil to keep the splines wet. The drain hole on my case always has a small amount of oil around it, so I know it's doing its job.
