Hi! So happy to see you here, I hope this step by step tutorial will help you learn how to make these simple but awesome rings! Will you try the one with an open back bezel?? ⭐ If you want to see more ring tutorials, check these out! - Making a ring with bezel setting for cabochon: th-cam.com/video/XhaxcTp8RiM/w-d-xo.html - Making a ring in the forest: th-cam.com/video/J-W1VFyWLOs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TArW65H0ZvXAYktW
Some extras if interested, from a fellow goldsmith : If you use less solder, you wouldn't even need to file it away afterwards, saving both money, time and strain. Also if you do have excess solder, file it away before shaping, it will alter the shape of the ring. It might feel safer to use more solder, but you used perhaps 3x more than this ring needed! Also when you use your finger to push that bezel down on the file, be aware that you will push more on one side than the other, so it is good to change way a couple of times so that it remains straight, or push with two fingers from above so it files straight. Punch hole a little closer to your edge, ofc not too close, but you could easily have gotten away with a mm distance here. When soldering a bezel to a plate, it will require less heat, time and strain on the solder if you cut it into smaller pieces and lay it evenly around the wall instead of one big piece; the heat can make it overheat and create bubbles when so large. It looks more elegant and feels more stable with a ring where the bezel is soldered between the band, not on top. Very good to use as much hard solder as possible! Thank you for sharing, and the inspiration!
Beginner here, I have been making necklaces and bracelets but am looking forward to making rings with sterling silver. Do you know where I can find a good soldering kit ? Thank you kindly :)
What a great tutorial. Just shows you that you don't need all the expensive stuff, very encouraging for someone like me who is wanting to get into silver smithing. Thank you!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it, Thank you so much for watching :) And I completely agree - you don't need ALL of the tools, especially when getting started. While there are certain tools that are necessary and some investment is inevitable with metalsmithing, there's no need to get everything all at once :)
I laughed so hard when you showed us where the lost gem was! 🤣 I'd like to say thank you for sharing your stories and teaching us the art of silversmithing jewerly. It has always been a dream of mine, but I never knew where to start. You have inspired me so much to finally give it a try. I have a lot to learn, but because of you, it has brought back that strong desire without hopelessness to give it a go. You and your work are absolutely beautiful! Thank you! ❤❤❤
Ditto, Ditto, and Ditto! I'm so inspired to finally invest in the tools/materials and commit! I do have some beautiful faceted & unfaceted gemstone Cabochons that are too small for beaded bezels, some of the tools, so I don't need to invest much more money to make it happen... But she makes it all look so easy..when I know that it will take years of practise to be half as good ❤️ I wish you well in your own endeavours 😊
I remember thinking a few days ago I should start making my own rings, but after watching a few video’s and this one I’ll just stick to buying them instead. This is a science, it’s a work of art, and a gift to be able to learn all of this and make a business out of it, something I wasn’t even considering doing. I respect this art and will never feel the slightest regret again when spending a lot of money on a ring. I’m getting into gemstone rings made with quality because as awesome as SHEIN and Temu jewelry are they don’t last but a few wears and I got so sick of my rings just snapping out in public, let’s just say, adjustable zinc alloy rings with ADHD are not a great combination apparently. But when I went to a Celtic festival with a friend and bought some sterling silver rings I swore I’d never go back to cheap jewelry ever again. It may cost more, but it lasts longer.
This requires incredible patience and you make it look so easy! I’ve gathered all my supplies, but I had to take a break from trying because it’s so hard lol 😂 I finally have the courage to try again 2 months later
that open bezel ring accents the opal beautifully! The flash tho! Great video Basia, especially love that you left in the silly moment of finding the opal on your arm.. giving "where is my phone, when you're on a call" vibes side note.... I did it! Thank you for all your tutorials and guidance, I have officially soldered my first pendant a full back, bezel set turquoise (pear cut) with a tube set Apatite facet dangle I didn't melt a single thing lol am going to learn polishing this week to finish the project, I couldn't have done so well on the first try without your channel and concisely delivered knowledge, Thank you again!!!
Basia, your work is so well done. I am referring your channel to my students. Your channel and your talent are a very valuable resource, and such an excellent example of good teaching. Many can do, few can teach (well). And your videos are so gorgeous to watch. 👏👏👏
I am honestly surprised! There is so much more work than I expected. This is such an art. I’m not sure what I was expecting but there is A LOT to consider!!! 😮
Can I just say that your video is so brilliantly filmed - fantastic big close ups (BCUs in filming parlance!) so useful for watching the solder flow. Love it!
Love these, especially the open bezel. Love the colours in opals. I must work out my ring size and save up for one of these beautiful simple rings. I watch for moonstone and Alexandrite too as those are my birthstones! I watch for a very simple bezel with moonstone and Alexandrite, but would be good with Opal as well - hubby doesn’t like Pearl s he grew up with the old adage that pearls are bad luck. These are gorgeous and I love watching the process. I’d love to try this, Hubby had to get his wedding ring cut off and didn’t want a replacement, one day I’d love to make something from the metal of his ring. 😊😊😊
That's so sweet, thank you so much, love! :) I appreciate it a lot. Oh yeah, I heard that about the pearls, that some believe they're bad luck. Well, considering they come from a living organism, one can argue that we're not suppose to harvest them. I can see the point here. Moonstone and alexandrite are gorgeous! I'm on the lookout for some lovely and flashy moonstones to make open rings like these opal ones. Hopefully I'll be able to buy some soon :) And yes, I['m sure one day you'll be able to make your own ring bands! It really isn't that difficult and I;m sure you'd enjoy it a lot. Even if you don't plan on buying your own tools, you can always check if there are any workshops run by jeweller's or makers in your area, or "ring in a day" workshops, these are great :)
Love the tip about using a wire step to bring the opal higher to fit around the bezel strip! Would you solder this wire step to the bezel strip? Would love to see a tutorial on how to do this ☺️
Hi Rachel! Your comment made me realize that I missed one clip and haven't added it to the video... The one where I was showing how I made that step! Oh dear 😅 That's a great suggestion! And it's connected to the subject of setting thin gemstones, so I will definitely make a video about it in the near future :)

It's so great to hear from another beginner & that it was a successful project! I'm very excited to try it myself, and I think that a pendant will be a good place to start also. Best wishes for your future projects!
Can I say, your videos are excellent. Thorough and brief at the same time. I love seeing how you fix mistakes and overcome problems. Perhaps a few handy hacks/tips to fix mistakes would be a great?
I have a BA in Art Education and I was a teacher for 15 years. Unfortunately, now I am disabled, but I enjoyed this work in college and wish I could do more. Maybe I should look for a class to get started up again. Thank you.
These are amazing. I have lots of great little stones for making rings but I’ve never made one before. I think I’ll have a few practice goes with copper before I think about breaking out the silver wire and sheets though. Thank you for this tutorial ✌🏼❤️💎
LOVE your channel Basia. I just ordered my first silversmithing set up after watching SO MANY of your videos. I can't wait! What is the name of the blue tape you use to organize your cabochons?
i’ve recently learned that bezel set is one of the easiest to do and so that makes sense why this is so approachable. that’s so cool. i love connecting points of learning.
It really is! Once you learn the technique and practice a little, it's very straightforward and fun :) And it's a great base for other setting techniques, too
Love these dainty rings!! I started this hobby last January and I NEVER get tired of making them!! This is where standard sized bezel cups and standard sized cabachons REALLY save time, though!! How are you able to use hard solder paste when joining the bezel to the rings, without the joins you just did coming undone? Does paste have a slightly lower melting temp than hard wire solder?
Would you ever consider making some of your previous videos again but more of a tutorial? I love your stacking and hammered ring videos but would love more detail like in this! Love your work, you’re an inspiration!
Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of the mesh made from wire that you heated up right before soldering? Is it to prevent the ring from getting too hot and melting? Thank you! I am learning a lot!
I saw another metal smith artist due this as well. I believe it transfers the heat more evenly from the bottom up into the silver, then they used the torch quickly over all the silver and finally coming in to heating the flux and silver wire solder to make a nice clean join.
Lovely demonstrations veey enjoyable. I do variouhs crafts such like stone csrving and wsnted to do more of my own pendsnts like these with the stones i find/cut myself. Can you recommend where to get the 925 silver you are using? Thos exact pieces are exactly what i need
Very clear and concise instructions. 👍 I always lose something when I'm making jewelry. It drives me crazy but I usually discover that I'm sitting on it. 😄
These rings are simply gorgeous!! Ive always wanted to learn jewelry making using this technique. I have heaps of beautiful seaglass Ive collected over the years & woukd live to turn them into rings & pendants, but really have no idea how to learn all the techniques or where to get supplies
This was sweet to watch! I have always wanted to get into jewelry making. I’m taking this as a sign from God✨🙂 The Opal hiding on your elbow was hilarious! Thank you for sharing 😂💛
Hello Basia, what a great tutorial. Very simple to follow and so thorough! I’m a complete beginner to soldering and there were a few tools you used that I’m not familiar with. I wondered if you could possibly provide a tools & materials list. I especially liked the hole punch pliers you used. I have two pair of jewelry hole punch pliers but neither seem as sturdy as yours. Could you maybe provide the brand. If my request is too much trouble, do not worry about it. I will figure it out. I very much appreciate all your content and will continue learning from you! Graciously, Andrea 🙏🏼😊
I just opened a crystal shop, and I am starting my journey of making my own jewelry. Jewelry has always been a passion of mine. I recently had to retire from my career. So, my full focus is on crystals. I have some incredible cabs and precious gems that I want to fully custom make. Any tips or videos you recommend watching. I love your style. I found your videos at just the right time. I am looking forward to learning from your videos!
Hello!! Incredibly informative video, thank you!! Is it possible for you to list your materials and the brand names? Specifically the flux and bezel material brands!! I've been trying to add more tools and equipment to my repertoire hahah. Thank you! :)
Hi Basia! Really good work as always! Just an idea for a future video, it would be great to make a tutorial about dealing with firestain (prevention and removal). That's a nightmare, specially for those who use hand torch...
That's a great suggestion! Thank you ❤ I thought I did a video about it, but turns out I made a post on Patreon, but never made a video. So I've added it to the list of ideas and will do my best to make that video in the future too :)
Hi Basha..beautiful rings, & perfect video instruction, thank you so much for sharing your skills..you did have me laughing when your Opel went missing, as I am always losing things, & find them stuck to me somewhere, yes, especially the tape!!..Glad you found it!..
Basia thank you so much for making this beginner, friendly video 🙏🏼 I have come back to it time and time again. I just have one question: how do you get the open ring bands angles just right so they align with the bezel for soldering. I am trying to make this ring, but I cannot seem to get my angles to align 😕. Do you have any tips or tricks for doing this? Many Thanks, Andrea
Thank you so much! Yes, these and many more like these will be available 🥰 I plan to update my shop in February with a batch of dainty rings just like these ones, I will make an announcement prior to the shop update 🙏
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing, they are so typical of your work. I loved watching you make these, so now, with yet another visit to the coffee machine, I'm off to my bench. More Argentium to fuse together. Let's see how much I can melt tonight, shall we? Sorry about the pic a few hours ago; that is all my computer would let me do. Wonderful build and video; thank you for sharing with us all. Stay safe, Steve xx
Hiya lady Stardust< This is a fantastic video; thank you for making it and for showing two versions of the process. I love this new style and format; it suits you. Your blush when you showed the hidden gem??? Perfection. It seems I'm not alone in loving this film; your work has gone up several levels with this change. When I was lighting, especially on The Clothes Show, my signature was several slashes of coloured light shining up the wall in the back of the shot. I used the two colours you are using, plus turquoise and sometimes purple. They are still my favourite colours, just now with gems. Great choice of gems; that flash of blue when you were setting the bezel was... Do you use a bezel rocker? I love it for smoothing down after the initial closing. I must start using the hammer handpiece with the rocker tip. That ability to push and smooth the metal at the same time is wonderful. Stay safe, Steve xx
I'm very happy you're enjoying the videos, Steve! I will switch to smaller and daintier jewellery now (in tutorials), I think it may be more interesting for people and I also want to explore these designs more. In this video I experimented with the light, at first I was using colorful lights and then I only used one warm white lamp. I noticed it's better when it comes to close-ups and details, so I might keep doing this moving forward. Ahh, working on sets with lights must've been very interesting! So much experience and fun memories, too. I love these colours too 🥰 Have a great evening Steve, thank you for watching and your kind comment 🙏
Thank you for another great video! I noticed you heated your third hand tweezers to avoid them from becoming a heat sink. How do you clean them? BTW, finding your stone stuck to your arm was hilarious. At least now I know I'm not the only one. 😉😂
To be honest, I haven't cleaned my tweezers yet. The clean ones in the video are new ones :) But the older ones haven't been cleaned, so I won't be able to answer... I'm very happy you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching ❤
Wonderful tutorial Basia! I really appreciate you clarifying the ring size. It's a small thing but being from America the size M means nothing to me as I am sure a size 6.75 means nothing to people from Europe. Like I said small thing but I have noticed in this art form there are so many terms that are called one thing in part of the world and called something else entirely elsewhere. I find it super interesting and cool in a way but it can also be slightly discouraging or frustrating when very first learning. I notice you use the sanding discs mainly for your sanding are there times you feel a buff stick is better? I use my sanding discs on the flex shaft almost exclusively just curious if there are circumstances that call for the buff sticks instead? The sanding discs are so much faster lol
Oh I completely agree! Sizes, measurements and all of that can vary, depending on the location, that's why there's so many charts online and using them sometimes can give you a headache haha 😆 I don't know gauges to this day, since I only use metric system, so I have to refer to chart everytime I need to know the size of metal in gauge. Same with the rings sizes! It's good to have a handy chart easily accessible and a simple, cheap mandrel that has all of these sizes on it, just to compare. They are very cheap on Amazon and online in general. I don't use it to form rings, as it's trash haha, but it's ok to quickly compare the sizes. As for your second question, in the beginning it seems that a lot of techniques and tools/bits jewellers use are all according to a specific rule and matter a lot. I always thought that and stressed whether I was doing the right thing using this or that and in what order etc. But I learned with time that a lot of stuff does the same thing and using one or another is simply a personal preference 😀 That's exactly the case here, I used the buffing stick, because it was right next to me and I didn't bother with the flex shaft haha :) But I do use sading discs often, too! Oh, and also, I used the stick, because I wanted to show that it can be done this way. So yeah, I've learned that you just pick what works for you - among all of the tools and attachments that are available - and create your own workflow that feels the best for you and gives you the results you want. Sorry, I may have gotten too much into answering it, but I was just thinking about it recently 😄
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thank you for the answer I really appreciate it! This is why I have been using the sanding discs I didn't notice a difference after I polished the pieces and it takes half the time!
Great tutorial! Thank you so much. I have a question I am hoping you can answer. Can you share a LINK for the Deco disc you used and the tool that you used to smooth the bezel after you used the burnisher? I think you called it an EVE attachment honey and grey ones. I would love to order those tools so I can make these rings. Thank you for being so helpful. :)
This was super informative and well made. I'm excited to try to make rings! I find that using a mitre jig helps me get the edges nice and clean for soldering bands
Thanks Basia, i'm definitely going to try a ring with the tiny opal i have. It's too small to try an open back, but the wire inside to lift the gem is a great idea
I was dying laughing when you pulled that opal from your elbow! Something I might have done myself 😂👍 now if I can only stop melting the the little rings. Thanks for sharing.
I'm very happy you love them! Thank you so much ❤ And yes, they are for sale, I have several available now in my shop, if you'd like to check them out: www.stardustmine.art/collections/rings
Hi, is there a supply list for this video? Thanks and sorry I'm very new...and I thank you for this video. This is exactly what I want to make, and I have a bunch of supplies, but everyone tells you something different it seems. I just want to make exactly this lol
Basia, regarding the open bezel ring shank: once you measure and cutout portion of ring shank how do you determine what angle to file it at to fit bezel correctly? And to make the sides evenly filed? By hand how?
Hi! So happy to see you here, I hope this step by step tutorial will help you learn how to make these simple but awesome rings! Will you try the one with an open back bezel??

Thank you! I am learning a lot!
I saw another metal smith artist due this as well. I believe it transfers the heat more evenly from the bottom up into the silver, then they used the torch quickly over all the silver and finally coming in to heating the flux and silver wire solder to make a nice clean join.
Well done! Thank you for sharing. It is always nice to get another idea for silver smithing!
GORGEOUS!!🥰🥰🥰🥰 My 1st time seeing your channel. I've been beading 18yrs and am ready to expand my horizons! THANK YOU FOR THE INSPIRATION!!💖💖💖
I'm so happy you're here! I hope you will enjoy other videos too 🥰💕 Thank you so much for watching and your kind comment
Right?? It's always in some odd, but also obvious place haha 😄 Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
You skill and your videos are both excellent 😊
These rings are simply gorgeous!! Ive always wanted to learn jewelry making using this technique. I have heaps of beautiful seaglass Ive collected over the years & woukd live to turn them into rings & pendants, but really have no idea how to learn all the techniques or where to get supplies
That always amazes me how it flows up or fills in the gaps because of heat ! Thank you for sharing ❤️🌹💋
I agree, it's very mesmerizing :) Thank you so much lovely! ❤️
Thank you - that was so well explained and easy to follow. x
This was sweet to watch! I have always wanted to get into jewelry making. I’m taking this as a sign from God✨🙂
The Opal hiding on your elbow was hilarious! Thank you for sharing 😂💛
Oh and subscribed! 🎉😊
Thank you, Bella Vida Mercy 💕
Thank you for sharing your beautiful art and being an inspiration❣️💞
It's my pleasure, thank you! I'm very happy you've been enjoying my videos ❤
wow looks Amazing good luck in your new space i love your videos here in England you are very inspiring x
So pretty. 😍. As I'm a complete beginner, your videos are great and I'm always learning so much.
Graciously,
Andrea 🙏🏼😊
Hello from puerto vallarta jalisco México. This are the rings i like to make and opals are local stones. Good video Basia. Saludos
This is mesmerizing, what a fun video!
Beautiful!!! Excited to try!
I love your channel and love the concise instruction! Great, soothing voice as well.
Many Thanks,
Andrea
I’m mesmerized by your work 👏🏼👏🏼 Are these going to be for sale?
Thank you so much! Yes, these and many more like these will be available 🥰 I plan to update my shop in February with a batch of dainty rings just like these ones, I will make an announcement prior to the shop update 🙏
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing I’ll be patiently waiting! Thanks!
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing, they are so typical of your work. I loved watching you make these, so now, with yet another visit to the coffee machine, I'm off to my bench. More Argentium to fuse together. Let's see how much I can melt tonight, shall we? Sorry about the pic a few hours ago; that is all my computer would let me do. Wonderful build and video; thank you for sharing with us all.
Stay safe, Steve xx
Thank you so much for sharing us how to set stone 🙏😍
thank you for this tutorial. Whats that metal item you placed on the charcoal brick
Really helpful video, thank you. So interesting!
That was a wonderful video, thank you! May I ask what tool (or vise) you were using to hold the ring when you were setting the stone?
Thank you for sharing your process with us!Very helpful to 'hobbyist' like myself!🥂
Hiya lady Stardust<
This is a fantastic video; thank you for making it and for showing two versions of the process.
I love these colours too 🥰
Have a great evening Steve, thank you for watching and your kind comment 🙏
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
Definitely going to have a go at these.
Дуже гарно вийшло! Дякую що поділилися своєю творчістю ❤️🏵️☺️☀️
These are beautiful! You do marvelous work! 🥰
Thank you so much! 🥰
Thanks Basia, I found this video very helpful and picked up a couple of tips 🙏
Basia, in one of your videos. Saw you measure the length needed for your bezel using a paper tape. What was that?
subbed ! 😍 great tutorial, ive been wanting to get into jewelry making
Thank you! Is the bezel wire 28 or 26 gauge?
This was super informative and well made. I'm excited to try to make rings! I find that using a mitre jig helps me get the edges nice and clean for soldering bands
Thanks Basia, i'm definitely going to try a ring with the tiny opal i have. It's too small to try an open back, but the wire inside to lift the gem is a great idea
they're so beautiful, i want them all 👁️👄👁️~💙✨ they're so in my style👌flower designs too 🤩
I'm happy you think so! Thank you ❤️ The purple one from the thumbnail, at the bottom, I wear that one ALL THE TIME! 😁😀
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing i'm not suprise, they're georgeus ✨
fantastic. want to try.
Thank you for posting this! I am new to this and hope to get into metalsmithing. This was great. How long does it take to make each ring?
Thank you for watching! I'm happy you found it helpful ❤ It depends, but usually a couple/a few hours
I was dying laughing when you pulled that opal from your elbow! Something I might have done myself 😂👍 now if I can only stop melting the the little rings. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the tutorials! What gauge size is the backplate?
Omg I would have done that with the missing opal haha 😂 ❤ both beautiful 🤩
I managed to lose some gems and silver bits throughout my time as a jeweler in many different ways but never like this! That was the first hahaha 😁
Is it possible to list out some of the materials you used? Metal gauges, saw blade and file sizes, and polishing pieces? Thank you!!
Great tutorial ❤
Outstanding! Thank you!
oh wow, thank you so much!! ❤
Baha...the cutest thing ever. The missing opal. 😂 I absolutely already adore you and this is first time I've seen a single video of yours 😂😂❤❤❤
oh my, thank you! You're so kind ❤ I hope you will like other videos too :)
Thank u very much for your videos! Its very helpful!!
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it 💜
Oh That Missing Opal!!!🤣🤣 That's my life in a nutshell. Love Your Videos
Hahaha same here 😁 thank you lovely! ❤️
Wow i love them? You are very clever and are they for sale? 🥰🇬🇧
I'm very happy you love them! Thank you so much ❤ And yes, they are for sale, I have several available now in my shop, if you'd like to check them out: www.stardustmine.art/collections/rings
Beautiful 😍
I have a question. What is the measurement of your sawblade? I think mine is to big... thank you...
10:17 hello! do you just use these instead of different bits with polishing compound?
Hi, is there a supply list for this video? Thanks and sorry I'm very new...and I thank you for this video. This is exactly what I want to make, and I have a bunch of supplies, but everyone tells you something different it seems. I just want to make exactly this lol
Very nicely done
Basia, regarding the open bezel ring shank: once you measure and cutout portion of ring shank how do you determine what angle to file it at to fit bezel correctly? And to make the sides evenly filed? By hand how?
Do you use hard wire or half hard wire to make these ring bands?
Are you able to do an in-depth video on the open-back bezel ring? For some reason, I'm unable to solder it correctly.
I would love to learn how to do this. Where do you get your supplies?
Lol I have done that before. Great video and always learn from your video
I love them both. ❤❤
These are so beautiful! I just started and I would love to make these! What metal are you using?
