The EASIEST WAY! How to make a SADDLE ring | Ring making tutorial

- Have you wondered HOW TO MAKE A SADDLE RING? Maybe you wanted to make one, but procrastinated, because you were unsure how to make it or felt intimidated? I hope my video will show you that the process is easier than you think and will encourage you to try this type of ring! The gemstone setting I chose for this project is silly simple (you might even say that I cheated a little), but honestly, sky is the limit! You can do whatever you like, as long as you keep the structure solid, well made and finish your ring aesthetically. I also used a handy template, so the responsibility for sizing was taken off of my shoulders by lovely Kristin, who prepared these templates (linked further below).

I was so excited for this video, I cast it to my TV to watch in 55 inches of glory 😂 did not disappoint! So much fun and I really loved watching all the polishing steps, and appreciate that you don't skip through these important points but let the work process flow. Great job on the ring Basia, and thank you again for making such great content! 🤩🙏💖
oh my, Alicia! You've made me so happy, thank you! ❤ I'm so glad you enjoyed this video, I feel it might be my best tutorial yet :) It means a lot that you've pointed out the polishing stages, as I actually did skip a lot of them in my past videos. I always thought that they are boring and too long, I assumed it was clear whats steps I was taking and that a short mention of them will suffice. But I understand now that is not the case and I will focus on each step more in my upcoming tutorials :) So your feedback is very important for me and very helpful. Thank you! ❤❤❤
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingthank you for sharing even more of your process, it's perfect to watch as much as possible of how and why. Steve...
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing it was the best so far in my humble opinion xx
Thats so smart!
That was incredible to watch! And the small setbacks you had really helped me realize if stuff goes wrong I can fix it ☺️
I also like you taking about the reasons you choose techniques or do things in a certain order.
The outcome was stunning 😍
If I can get anything remotely looking like your work, my wife will love it. Thanks for the video.
oh Gabriel, I'm sure you can! I'd say that keeping the slow pace while making is crucial. And having fun, of course! Amethysts also make everything look better haha 😄 Thank you so much and good luck!
I've been looking for ages for tutorial about saddle ring. That is god sent! Thank you Basia!!!
Oh my, thank you thank you!! I'm so happy you think so 🥰 Make sure you check out the templates and blog post by Nancy Hamilton, she shares lots of useful tips
I make lots of saddle rings and was thrilled to see you making one! They are actually very comfortable too. Fantastic work and design! Thanks so much for sharing your skills!
I was so excited for this one, I really wanted to make one for AGES!! 😍 I'm so happy how this one turned out and I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for watching 💜
So far this is my favorite video of yours!!! I absolutely love it and I can't wait to try it! Thank you, Basia for another fantastic tutorial!

Hiya LA,
May I ask if you have watched Basias' other work? Some great tips and builds shown, well worth watching. Stay safe, Steve...
GORGEOUS! 😍
Thank you so much! ❤
Thank you for another amazing video. 😊
Thank you for watching!🥰
I like the table side of my stones pointing upward. That looks like the back. The ring and the video are both fabulous 😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩.
Sounds very interesting! I need to experiment with gems like that too 😃 Thank you so much for lovely comment and for watching 💜
It's not the back; it's a faceted cabochon, flat back and curved top, as I said, in this case, faceted, not smooth. I hope this helps, Steve...
What a great video and beautiful ring. I love the soap/sanding tip. I really enjoy your videos.
Hiya S P,
If you care to watch Basias' older videos, she has quite a few 'Hint and Tips' films; they are well worth watching; the pencil eraser tip was in one, yes, sorry, it's rubber, not soap. The previous build videos are worth watching too.
Stay safe, Steve...
Great video and interesting design! Thank you for sharing!
Hi.. Beautiful Ring.. question: When you make sterling silver rings to sell.. do you find people want to see the .925 silver stamp in or on the ring? Thanks..
I love this piece. So beautiful. Ive learned so much from watching your videos. Can i ask if you have any tips for cleaning excess solder or the white halos from around the small details? I cant seem to find a process that works well. Thanks 🧡
Hiya Emma,
Good question; the only way I've found is to abrade the solder away. Sorry, but that means a file/buff sticks or abrasive tips in your flex shaft if you have one. Try using less solder when you first solder; if you need to, you can add more if it needs it. Like most jewellers, I use excess and then curse as I file and polish it away.
Stay safe, Steve...
@@stephencoster9532 thanks for the advice 😀
Beautiful! Great job.
Thanks Basia. Lovely ring. Great tutorial.
Thank you so much, it means a lot! And I'm glad you enjoyed watching it :)
That’s a show stopper!! 🎉❤
oh wow, THANK YOU!! ❤
Beautiful!
Thank you lovely!
i am going to try soldering a whole bezel cup onto a curved surface. it looks beautiful on this ring!
Edit: I did it and I love how it turned out
You totally should! I think it's perceived as "improper" perhaps, or not professional, but I actually really like this solution and the effect it creates. Make sure you sand down the curve a little, so that the solder joint between the bezel and the ring is strong. Then you can leave it as it is or play around with adding embellishments, to conceal the gap and add details :)
Awww wow !!! This is amazing ❤
NICE WORK KEEP IT UP
Hi, Basia. This work is wonderful!!! How do you hold the balls while soldering? I couldn't think of anything better than putting the ring on its side.
Hello this ring is beautiful. Please can you tell me what solder you used for the embellishments, medium or easy? Also for the stone bezel, which solder. I heard you say regular but don’t know if that is medium or easy. I am having so much difficulty soldering in layers. I get to the last part and it falls apart, maybe I lack heat control? Thank you so much. Katrina
Thanks for the video. I liked some of the techniques you used!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for watching :))
lovely!
Thank you 💜🙏
Hiya Lady Stardust,
Thank you for the Christmas present of this fantastic ring tutorial. It is very sweet of you to share. Typical of you to share the ooops points, too, with the star coming off and the ring is going for its first flying lesson. Nothing is hidden here. When you cut the ring from the sheet silver, it could have been cut on a computer cutter; it is so perfect to the black line. Your use of embellishments is definitely getting to me; I've found myself wondering about adding some to the pieces I'm making. I usually end up with an austere-looking piece for a lady; I need to watch more about how you do it and develop my own style.
Your mastering of the ring bender was an inspiration; watching the bends become the correct and gentle
curve of the ring size was magic. Swapping between paste and wire solder was good, showing us that it is possible and good to do. That gem was the perfect choice for the ring, a very feminine piece of work in design and execution. I love how your adding a few simple shapes changes the circle into a fully finished work of art!
Thank you, Dear Lady, for this video and for all the films you have made for us throughout the whole year.
Your skill is exemplary, and your mastery of a foreign tongue to bring us these are heartwarming.
A wonderful Christmas to you and Jarek, full of the love you bring us all.

Thank you so much Steve!! I'm so happy you liked it, I must admit that I think it's really one of the best ones so far. And I believe it is a good direction, so you can expect more videos like this one coming soon! I have planned so many, if only I could make all of them faster haha 😅
But alas, sadly I'm still a one person show. So we'll have to wait for the option to clone oneself or an opportunity to hire an apprentice, whichever comes first! 😁
Thank you for watching and your sweet feedback, I appreciate it a lot! I hope you have a calm and wonderful holiday season, make sure to get a lot of rest 💜 xx
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingis a very good direction to take your filming. One of the very best videos you've produced; I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you again for the video and for your kind wishes too. Off to home for the holiday? I may have to watch it a third time now...

Thank you so much! I love your videos…I’ve made several rings in a studio, but without a materials list, and I didn’t take notes…this was the most helpful video. Materials are so important! I’m afraid to order metal without knowing for sure what I need. By the way…polishing, if I only have a flex shaft, would zicam be the last step? I got everything on pepetools, they’re great! Once again thank you!
Love it, can’t wait for more silver and solder to come in to try it out (and to make my gf one 😂)
Aaaahmazing video, thank you so much for sharing!!! Where did you buy the lotus flower embellishments?
Thank you Yvonne! I ordered them from a local supplier in Poland ❤
Hi! Very helpful video. What was the white oval object used to hold the top of the bezel wire while sanding the bottom of the bezel before soldering it to the backplate? Timestamp about 9:01. Thanks!!
I think that was a regular eraser :) I use it to hold small pieces with sharp edges for sanding
Great tutorial as usual Basia..!👍🏼 What kinds of wire do you use to support the piece while sweat soldering? Also, I have the rotating pan with pumice, can I use the wire on that for sweat soldering?
The wire is iron binding wire available from all good jewellery suppliers. Yes, the pumice pan will work well, for all soldering, not just sweat soldering. Stay safe, Steve...
@@stephencoster9532 thank you so much.. I really appreciate this community💓 Hope you're having a lovely Christmas!
@@petrichor7121thank you for your kind wishes. Yes, I'm having a very laid-back day, off to lunch in a couple of hours. I hope you are having the best possible day. Stay safe, Steve...
Gorgeous ring Basia! 😍 Thank you so much for your tutorials and sharing your processes (including the oopsies! 😉). I always look forward to your video tutorials. May I ask, what is that you were using to hold the bail while sanding it flat prior to soldering to the backplate?
Thanks so much 😊 I'm very happy you liked it and your comment made my day! That white thing? It's an eraser rubber, a tip shared by Melissa, it helps to hold a small bezel like that while sanding and protect fingers from the sharp edges. The bezel made with the gallery wire is more difficult to handle with all these little spikes haha
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing That's a great tip! Thank you! I'm always looking for ways to save my fingers when sanding.
Hiya Rochelle BG,
May I recommend Basias' previous videos'? She shares some amazing 'Tips & Tricks' plus some beautiful builds. Stay safe, Steve...
beautiful! the embellishments you used did you make those>
Absolutely awesome luv it! Where to buy these cute embellishmwnta plz? Thanx! ❤
I mostly made them by hand ❤️ the lotus flowers were sold by a jeweller's store in Poland. Many shops carry lovely charms that can be used as embellishments
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
Yes I realized after asking u prolly made them urself 😆 thanx!
Sorry, what silicone bits did you use? I missed it
This was so nice!! I will try this myself I purchased a few templates a few months back, I will do some inlay instead setting a stone. May I email you my results? Another question I should have prolly asked on the proper video but how exactly do you calculate the silver you used in a piece?
Ohh, INLAY, yes!! I would LOVE to see the result, please do email me :) here is my email adamiec.uk@gmail.com I want to try email soon and I have a video planned with it too 😍
As for your question, do you mean when pricing finished jewellery? Or how much silver I will need to make something?
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing pricing the finished jewelry
@@HabibahW There are two ways to go about it. You can either use the weight of the silver after cutting and check how much is will be with the official online site that shares prices of metals (for the grams). You will need to account for when you purchased that piece of metal, because the price might change over time. So it's good to keep the track of your orders (by having invoices close by or making a small note and adding it to your supplies).
Another way is to measure how much silver you use to cut out this shape (this method accounts for some of the extra metal around the shape you're cutting out). Then you can proceed the same way as before, using the weight of your silver. You can also check how much a piece of silver would be with the shop you got your supplies from. Let's say you're using a piece of metal sheet that is about 5cm x 4cm and you will use its entirety for that piece. You can go to Rio Grande or Cooksongold, depending on where you get your metal sheet and use the calculator on their site to calculate the price. This method is helpful in case you have no idea how much you paid for your silver and need ANY starting point. I hope this helps!
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thanks so much this helped alot
Was that a bar of soap you used when sanding the bezel?
haha, oh no, that was an eraser! :) Helps with a better grip when working woith tiny, pointy elements
Did you use easy solder for all embellishments?
I did! It worked for me quite well here
Hiya again, yes I'm back again, because I forgot something, again. When polishing on the bench lathe, you say you will use the green Luxi compound, then use the white one. Did you use green after white?
Steve xx
It was an orange one 😄 The colour evaporated or something, but luckily I marked it, so I know it's originally the orange one :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingoops, so who is colour blind now, then? Do you find the filter gets clogged by the lint off the wheel? xx
What was that you picked up your stone with and put in your bezel?
I believe that was Blu Tack :)
Hi! Very curious what the white thing you are using to help you hold the bezel while sanding the bottom and filing is? When I'm sanding the bottom of my bezels I'm always having to be very slow to not completely mess the bezel shape up that looked like it made it a breeze
Hi Aaron! that white thing is an eraser rubber :)
Yes! Precisely, this tip was shared by a really cool lady, Melissa. She recommended using an eraser to save those fingers when sanding sharp little elemets, like this bezel 😄
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thank you definitely going to start using one! Such a cool idea!
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thank you this is a very cool idea! Definitely going to start using one
@@evasantamariaperez8112 Thank you!
Great video! Could you do a video on how and where to get the materials? I am trying to begin metalsmithing but am very unsure how much to spend and what supplier supplies high quality materials. Some suppliers have immense shipping costs which I would like to avoid if possible. Thank you very much!
The video was great. I save all your tutorials for later, so I can follow them once I am better equipped and have aquired some skills haha:)
Hi! I have a video about it: th-cam.com/video/GiKQoYljekE/w-d-xo.html But I need to make an updated version soon :) So stay tuned, as there will be a new one coming in the new year.
I completely understand you, I was starting out with the minimal budget and I would say that the starterpack I share in the video I linked is a good starting point. I would go with the larger supplier too, simply because you can be sure you will get good supplies for your money. Whereas when you try to save as much as possible, you my end up buying fake gems and poor quailty metal that's not what supplier claims it to be. It's better to buy less, but better quality.
I'm very happy that you enjoyed my video and I hope that my content will be helpful! Good luck! ❤

Hi Basia, thanks for the well explained video. Love your pieces. Please could you clarify what sort of metal cage do you use on top of your charcoal brick for soldering?
Wow!
First, first, first, from Brazil.
Yayyyy first!! 😁😁😁❤️ Thank you!
May I know how to make this decorated lobe house?
Your tutorials are so helpful and I love the explanations and advice (I’ve watched all your tips and I think my favorite is the pill box to store the little Dedeco starbursts).
You’ve definitely gotten me hooked on Pepetools! I’ve got quite a wishlist now and Im fortunate to live close enough that my orders arrive in a couple of days.
DUDE!!!! Using an eraser to hold your bezel while you sand the bottom! What kind of magical hack is this!? I'm totally using that. I end up dropping them half the time. So, I do have a question. I bought some solder paste and it leaves a black residue every time that the pickle doesn't clean. Could that be a brand thing? Or is it a solder paste thing?
Hahaha, isn't that a neat trick?? One of the makers and my viewers, Melissa, shared this tip and I LOVE it! Been saving my fingers since, especially when working with a sharp little bugger, like a bezel made with a gallery wire haha 😄 As for the solder paste, hmm... To be honest, mine sometimes does it but sometimes not. And it's hard for me to say - at least at this point - what causes it. In this video, after rewatching it now, I think some bits of my solder paste burned and were black (more than usual) because I haven't pickled my metal sheet after annealing it, but went stright to placing embellishments and soldering. That was a mistake, cleaning the metal after each job involving fire can be very helpful. Other than that, could this be a brand thing? But then again, I tried a no name paste from Cooksongold and one from Pepetools. They both get dark sometimes and sometimes they don't. Once I figure out the difference, I'll be sure to share it in the video :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thanks so much for the response! Good to know I'm not the only one. On the pieces I used it on I had quite the time getting it off. Yes! If you ever figure it out I would love to know. ☺
what n how is regular solder differ from hard solder and when use either please?
Not sure if I understood correctly, but I use solder paste, which comes in extra easy, easy, medium and hard. And I also use solder wire, which I cut myself into smaller pieces.
For regular soldering, like bezels, rings and bigger joints, I use the solder pallions. But I tend to use the paste for embellishments, to control the amount, and also because little embellishments can stick to the paste and it's easier to solder them in place.
As for the grade, you start with hard solder and make your way down to easy grade. The more soldering joints there are, the more grades you will use. It is to preserve the solder joints and prevent the solder that was used before from flowing again. In other words, and please correct me if I'm wrong, the temperature is different for different grade of solder, so you will use the hard one first and easy second. Hope it helps!
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingabsolutely true. Plus, the hard solder has the most silver in it, so it will match the main item better. Medium solder with less silver, easy even less, and extra easy least amount of silver in it. I hope this helps.
Excellent, thank you for adding that, Steve! ❤️

That first soldering was badly made. I wasn't even surprised that star has fallen off. I'd pickle the metal after annealing - it was black from oxides.
Other than that it looks quite pretty as a final product.
Spot on - I always pickle after each soldering or annealing job, but I must've gotten distracted with filming, that I forgot to do it that time. I only spotted this once I was editing the video. This must've caused the star to fall off, it's very important to pickle and clean the metal before and after soldering 👏
