Beautiful job- I love it when a person shows you what can happen in real life- like mislaying their tools or running out of things - in your case the hardener. It makes me feel like I'm not alone when it happens to me. Handmade pieces of art are far more precious to me than something coming off of lathe- as you put your heart and soul into each piece and a bit of it stays in the work long after you're gone.
You're the man! I love when people show the old skool way to do things and how you start out. I think everyone should have to do things first without machines and lathes to appreciate them when they do come into their life!
Thanks and yeah I wanted people to know they they don't need all the crazy tools that I have to make stuff like this but it does make it a lot faster and easier if you do 😅
Back in the early 70's I was assigned to Taipei AS in Taiwan. While there I got interested in lapidary and silver work. I always wished I brought the torch we used back with me. Unlike the torch in this video, it gave a very gentle, but hot, flame. It was a canister with a foot bellows and a light weight torch that gave a very soft flame. The system used Naphtha as fuel. All tubing was just run of the mill plastic tubing like you would use on a fish tank. You never had to worry about moving the solder with the flame or burning the piece. Cheap and worked like a charm. Do wish I had brought it back.
Beautiful little job. This is the first time I've watched someone make a ring. When I was a younger man I had the opportunity to work with a Navajo silver smith and master craftsman. I wish I would have taken him up on his offer to become his apprentice, but I was young and dumb and more interested in exploring the country at the time. Now that I'm older and slightly wiser, I wish I would have taken him up on his offer. The Navajo man's work was amazing, and if I had apprenticed under him, I'd probably be an expert by now.
So interesting! Many technical details like accurate measuring, not stretching out the thinner wire strips, using Easy Solder which has a lower melting point than the first solder, multiple quenching to preserve metal crystal structure, multiple pickling to remove firescale for better solder adhesion, wow! This is what master craftsmanship is all about. Very grateful for your knowledge sharing and I admire your expertise with jewelry making. It looks like alchemy to me. I love jewelry so much. Miniature pieces of art and bringing together so many skills in the jeweler - knowledge of how various metals will behave with fire, hammer, chemicals, stone knowledge, tool knowledge, understanding of hazards with fire and chemicals, and more. What a fascinating universe of learning. That is one beautiful ring!!
Master craftsman????? Clearly you are not a craftsman. NO craftsman ever uses a precision instrument for scribing. Go back to traditional, a digital calipers???? Whats the matter cant read a normal calipers??? Not very traditional.
Wow watching this (that I just happen upon somehow) has made my appreciation for my jewelry pieces go up 110%. I didn't realize how much work went into them. I am profoundly impressed. Thanks for posting.
That was quite the watch! I think showing that you don't have to have no equipment to make jewelry is the way to influence beginners that they can make it as well.
I like this video for a couple of reasons. Having sat at a bench for a time, it's not talked enough about running out of stuff or improvising because you can't find something else. That's an every day occurrence. Great job on the ring... great video!
@@GomeowCreations okay gotcha. I just watched the vid on your Benchmate. Way awesome setup. Makes me want to give up accounting and go back to the bench.
I have been watching many ring videos of late, and they all make we want a lathe that I can`t afford. This was very helpful for me with limited tools. Thanks.
Yeah for some people it is too much especially when we're starting out. That is what I made this to help show that you can do it by hand and work up to getting the better tools.
I’m not a jewelry maker and will likely never make this gorgeous ring, but your video was really great. I enjoyed watching this and wish you continued inspiration. Beautiful job!
Thanks for the hints! I've made a couple of rings with stone inlays from the Washington area: some Black jade and some listwanite. Didn't use the piecemeal method, instead used inner band as a template for a slab of stone, cut the slab in half, ground out a semicircle in each half - while checking for fit, then assembled the outer rings on the inner band, filled in blemishes with extra easy solder, epoxied the halves onto the assembled ring, then used the lapidary trim saw to cut away the ring from the stone. Finished the final dimensions of the stone and polished all on a Diamond Pacific Genie cabbing machine. Thanks again for the video, I found it very easy to follow!
When we made rings like this we never bothered with a calculator for sizing. We used string and then added some extra length that we cut off once we curbed and cut it. We also soldered the two wires onto the flat piece while it was flat. We curved it, cut it and then solder the whole thing altogether at one time.
A little tip that you could use if you wish is when sanding your edges like you did here, make figure eights and rotate piece 1/4 turn frequently while making these figure eights. This was how I would lap seal faces that were used in hydraulic pumps. Creates a flat surface.
I don't know why 556 people would dislike this video he done fantastic work explained every step in detail what else do people want from him if it's not for you why even watch the video anyways thanks for the great video you inspire people to get away from the computer and do sum thing with there life's
I love the idea of not needing a lathe. It's more time consuming, true, but worth the extra effort and saves you buying a thousand dollar lathe. Thanks for posting.
You can get a cheap lathe for $500-$600 that will work for this. I got one used for $400 but I wanted to make sure people know how to do this without one. 😁👍
So I already made a bunch of wood rings with various stone inlays, but your video showed me that I should use the metal-powder-infilling a lot more frequent. Looks really great!
The ring looks amazing! I‘m in way over my head with the techniques you use (starting with the formula for the correct amount of silver right at the beginning, I was like „What? Hang on...“) but this makes me want to take a jeweler‘s course more than ever!
hi I am just starting making my own ring for my partner for our 15th wedding anniversary, this was a fabulous insight on how to make a beautiful ring thank you.
Great job in describing all the steps! That’s how instructional videos are meant to be. I’ve got nearly half an oz of 24K gold dust and now I know what to use it on!
Thanks, I never know if I'm going to get my point a crossed so it's good the hear this. 😄 As for your gold dust, I would melt that down and make some wire or sheet of of it before using it to fill in cracks haha
Remarkable sir. Thank you. It speaks volumes for the quality of the work (and the patience of the maker!) when you take the time to explain in such detail every little part of what to do, how to do it, possible pitfalls and how to overcome them! Thank you (again!) Blessings and peace from UK.
Thank god I found this video...just started to learn jewelry making and already broke my stones when trying to push in the bezel...so I was thinking maybe I can just crash the stones and make an inlay...experimenting and learning. Thanks for the video!
amazing...wow....I did a silversmithing Course years ago then did an arts degree and majored in silversmithing and loved it ...but had no work upon completion and ended up doing a graphic design course and that got me into working in that industry and I always drew at home and often wanted to do some silversmithing but now as covid has changed many of us and our careers I find that I want to set up a work area at my family home, my dad has many machines as he was a welder and so there is a lot of stuff I can use or make use of. Your video has inspired me to get back into it and will certainly be using the this as one of my attempts to get my rings done ..I love working with silver was not a fan of gold,
Beautiful! I made a similar ring in Art class when I was in high school. We oxidized the area where the stones went so that there was the contrasting color.
Beautiful work! I don't have a lathe, but what works just as well for rings, is to adapt a tapered mandrill to fit the chuck of a drill-press and you have an instant vertical lathe!
I woke up early this morning before work and went to TH-cam. This video was a relaxing start to my day. Although I am a programmer by trade, I might take this up as a hobby. I will have to find some workshops. Thank you.
@@GomeowCreations I will be taking a look at them. I have a son who is 16 and is interested in creating rings. So this will be an enjoyable adventure for both of us. Thank you for your response.
OMG~ HAD TO WATCH THIS A FEW TIMES JUST BECAUSE I WAS MESMERISED BY THE PROCESS ~ I ALWAYS WONDERED HOW THIS WAS DONE ~ NOW I KNOW ~ FANTASTIC JOB TOO ~DID NOT REALISE HOW MUCH EASIER THIS WAS TO DO THEN WHAT I HAD IMAGINED ~ AND THE TOOLS TO MAKE IT ARE NOT AS COSTLY EITHER! THANK YOU SO MUCH ~ I WILL BE A NEW SUBSCRIBER AS WELL A NEW FOLLOWER!! 👌🏾👍🏽😎
Hey, thanks and I make that video to show people that you can do it without all the high priced tools. The down side is that this takes a long time and a lot of filing. 😅
This is a great video man! Recently, I’ve been making rings out of coins, and it sure is a different process, but this video is very helpful in providing me with new insights into ring making. Also, I really like that Dremel.
Thanks for demystifying how to make such a gorgeous looking ring ... you make it look so simple I’ll have to have a go ... keep up the good work.... All the best to you.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I would love to buy something like this for my man. I appreciate how you broke down every step and said what products you were using and how long it took etc. Thank you!
I was taught to use clear epoxy, works great. One time I used JB Weld and the contrast was even better. that was 40 years ago and it still looks good. Of course I had my wheels & buffers for the finish work, too. - Can't see super glue lasting that long.
This is an awesome video, very informative and I love that you are showing a different way to go about making a ring. I think we tend to get hung up thinking the way we know is the only “right” way but I appreciate that there can be many ways to get a beautiful end product like the ring you created here! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
GomeowCreations I think that’s great! I’m a self taught caker who only got into it because of a life changing illness. Along the way I’ve learned to do amazing things with ordinary stuff I find around my house! I got (and still get) folks telling me how I’m not doing things “right”......lol 🙄 I choose to surround myself with people like you who can see great possibilities in regular ole stuff! 😁
Thank you for showing an amateur silver dabbler that great things of beauty can be created with hand tools. I don't have even half of what I would like in my tool crib and I tend to dream big and am disappointed when I think I need a power tool to do it. It's a great video, easy to follow and very inspirational.
Tip You can use a drill with a large bit wrapped in masking tape as a lathe, it only really works well for polishing and final shaping but I never needed it for anymore. It just makes life 1000 times easier lol
Looking at this ring you've made, I'm thinking a couple things. 1. For filling in the space between the stones rather than leaving the glue, maybe put some bits of scrap silver in with tte turquoise or some copper since turq and copper are so closely related. 2. Bust your turquoise or other stones down finer and select the pieces so the size matches. 3. Uhm, lost my train of thought so I'll have to either make something up or forget about it! Yup, blank space where that last thought was. Skipping it for now!
Thank you for the awesome video! Great tip on sawing between the silver ends before you solder them closed - mine are usually crooked after filing. So excited for your other tutorials! :)
oh my gosh thank you for the measuring formula, it makes so much sense; i was wondering why the ones i made always turn out a few mm smaller but it seems very obvious now xD. and the rest of the video is also very instructive and well done
If you don’t mind me asking what gauge was the square wire you used here? And you couldn’t you use you’re flex shaft or whatever type of hand piece you have instead of a hand file? I don’t yet have a lathe. I’ve always loved these rings!! And would love to make one of these for myself ❤️ Thanks for reposting this 😊
I got remember the gauge but it was 1.3mm I believe. You could use a flex shaft to cut it down but I think it would be hard to not make low spots. That is why I use the handfile 😁
What thicknesses are used to make this ring & I would appreciate if you would tell me . What is the thickneses , and dementions of stock you normally have on your bench to work with on your projects ?
I use 1.6mm or 16ga square wire and 0.6mm or 22ga. That is kinda what I use for everything but I also make my own sheet and wire when I need it by just melting down silver scrap.
Very nice work and very simple as well I learn to make jewelry when I was 15 years old we were visiting a friend of ours who was the jeweler I thought that was very cool at the time and I wouldn't mind doing it now
Thank you for this tutorial. I like the fact that you showed ways to create without having to use expensive tools & machinery. Great job! Question: can you use any kind of super glue for this project?
love the ring! random question though, how do make sure the edges of the ring do not hurt your skin? is it special rounding of the edges or is it just sanding it down more? thanks

It was awesome .I am a Goldsmith student and I'm happy to find you. Thank you
Well thank you and that's awesome you are becoming a goldsmith. I really need to start working with gold haha
GomeowCreations, for now, we are working with silver. I prefer silver than gold too 😉
So I already made a bunch of wood rings with various stone inlays, but your video showed me that I should use the metal-powder-infilling a lot more frequent.
Looks really great!
The ring looks amazing! I‘m in way over my head with the techniques you use (starting with the formula for the correct amount of silver right at the beginning, I was like „What? Hang on...“) but this makes me want to take a jeweler‘s course more than ever!
Thank you and if you want I can explain the math better for the ring if you want me to. 😁👍
GomeowCreations I would love that!
I admire your craftsmanship.
hi I am just starting making my own ring for my partner for our 15th wedding anniversary, this was a fabulous insight on how to make a beautiful ring thank you.
Great job in describing all the steps! That’s how instructional videos are meant to be. I’ve got nearly half an oz of 24K gold dust and now I know what to use it on!
Thanks, I never know if I'm going to get my point a crossed so it's good the hear this. 😄
As for your gold dust, I would melt that down and make some wire or sheet of of it before using it to fill in cracks haha
GomeowCreations I have other gold scrap to do that with...all from my recycling old computers and electronics hobby
Remarkable sir. Thank you. It speaks volumes for the quality of the work (and the patience of the maker!) when you take the time to explain in such detail every little part of what to do, how to do it, possible pitfalls and how to overcome them! Thank you (again!)
Blessings and peace from UK.
Thank you 😊
This is such a cool way to use up scrap metal and scrap stones!
Yeah it really is 😁
Excellent !!
Thank you for this. Most interesting to watch even very late at night. Don’t know if I’m ready for this yet but someday soon.
I typically make everything by hand.. this was an excellent tutorial regarding inlay! Thank you!
Thank god I found this video...just started to learn jewelry making and already broke my stones when trying to push in the bezel...so I was thinking maybe I can just crash the stones and make an inlay...experimenting and learning. Thanks for the video!
I took a high school jewelry class and this is how we made our inlay rings
Oh really? Well that's cool haha. I'm happy to hear that I came up with a way to do this that is all ready used in schools haha.
@@GomeowCreations this was back in 1998 I lost the ring but loved the video because it shows what you can do without having a lot of equipment
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.
My precious...
😊
amazing...wow....I did a silversmithing Course years ago then did an arts degree and majored in silversmithing and loved it ...but had no work upon completion and ended up doing a graphic design course and that got me into working in that industry and I always drew at home and often wanted to do some silversmithing but now as covid has changed many of us and our careers I find that I want to set up a work area at my family home, my dad has many machines as he was a welder and so there is a lot of stuff I can use or make use of. Your video has inspired me to get back into it and will certainly be using the this as one of my attempts to get my rings done ..I love working with silver was not a fan of gold,
I always liked to turn on the Science Channel and this is just like watching those "How It's Made" episodes. Great work man!
Thanks and yeah I also liked watching how it's made when I was younger 😁👍
Masterclass. You made that look so simple!!
Well thank you 😊
Beautiful! I made a similar ring in Art class when I was in high school. We oxidized the area where the stones went so that there was the contrasting color.
That is a good idea, you can also paint the inner area of the ring so you have different color options.

Beautiful work! I don't have a lathe, but what works just as well for rings, is to adapt a tapered mandrill to fit the chuck of a drill-press
and you have an instant vertical lathe!
Thank you and yes you can use a mandrill with a drill or drill press but a lot of people done have that either.
I woke up early this morning before work and went to TH-cam. This video was a relaxing start to my day. Although I am a programmer by trade, I might take this up as a hobby. I will have to find some workshops. Thank you.
Well good morning 👍 I have some other videos that show some more of the basic techniques needed to make jewelry. You might find them helpful
@@GomeowCreations I will be taking a look at them. I have a son who is 16 and is interested in creating rings. So this will be an enjoyable adventure for both of us. Thank you for your response.
What a fascinating process! This process is not what I was expecting for the turquoise stone, but gosh is it cool!
The green turquoise and brass powder are one the best combinations of colors .
😁
@@GomeowCreations the turquoise in the beginning of the video was green but at the end of the video turned into blue :))
It might have been a light problem 😅
What a beautiful piece. Marvelous.
Thank you very much 😁
OMG~ HAD TO WATCH THIS A FEW TIMES JUST BECAUSE I WAS MESMERISED BY THE PROCESS ~ I ALWAYS WONDERED HOW THIS WAS DONE ~ NOW I KNOW ~ FANTASTIC JOB TOO ~DID NOT REALISE HOW MUCH EASIER THIS WAS TO DO THEN WHAT I HAD IMAGINED ~ AND THE TOOLS TO MAKE IT ARE NOT AS COSTLY EITHER!
This is how I was taught at Medway Art College 30 years ago. Just picking it back up now, wish I hadn’t waited so long 🤨
He made it look easy, it's probably a little more difficult to do then you think.
I love turquoise and silver. Thank you for the video.
I always wondered how they got the what looked like solid stone to form. cool video. thanks
😁
This is a great video man! Recently, I’ve been making rings out of coins, and it sure is a different process, but this video is very helpful in providing me with new insights into ring making. Also, I really like that Dremel.
Thanks for demystifying how to make such a gorgeous looking ring ... you make it look so simple I’ll have to have a go ... keep up the good work.... All the best to you.
😁👍

Beautiful ring my man, well done.
Thank you 😁
Watching a beautiful ring like that being made was so cool. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much for watching 😀
i had no idea how to make such a ring, but now i must try it myself!!
Great video. I'm in the process of learning this technique. Your instructions were very clear. Thanks!
I was taught to use clear epoxy, works great. One time I used JB Weld and the contrast was even better. that was 40 years ago and it still looks good. Of course I had my wheels & buffers for the finish work, too. - Can't see super glue lasting that long.
I have some resin now that I will be using in future videos. I have seen that the super glue does hold up pretty well but time will tell 😁
Monkey glue
Well .. gorilla
but pfft..
@@notfiveo Interesting, I never had that problem.
Absolutely fantastic. Thanks for making this and hardly wait to see your others
Well than you for taking the time to watch it 😁
What a beautiful end product! So interesting to watch the technique. TH-cam recommended you and I'm now a subscriber. TFS!
Welcome to the channel and I'm happy to have you 😄👍 and thank you very much for your kind words about my work.
Great video❤ thanks for your clear and professional directions👍
Great video. Explained great for someone like me that knows zero on making ring with inlay.
The ring is stunning! You're so talented!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us. I can't wait to make matching rings for my upcoming wedding. 💜
Thank you and best of luck, let me know if you have any questions. 😁👍

Man you got the patience, you got the Art! 👏👏👏👍❤ great video love it!
Excellent instructions. I will make one as soon as I have all the tools and supplies.
Thank you and I'm working on a better tool and material list right now that you might find helpful 👍
This is an awesome video, very informative and I love that you are showing a different way to go about making a ring. I think we tend to get hung up thinking the way we know is the only “right” way but I appreciate that there can be many ways to get a beautiful end product like the ring you created here! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Well thank you very much for your kind words. I want people to see that you don't need thousands of dollars in tools to make something like this 😁👍
GomeowCreations I think that’s great! 😁
I'm glad I got this in my recommended list^^ Nice work
Well I'm happy to hair that I'm popping up in recommendations and thank you 😁👍
Thank you for sharing this. I can't wait to try it myself!
Thank you for showing an amateur silver dabbler that great things of beauty can be created with hand tools. I don't have even half of what I would like in my tool crib and I tend to dream big and am disappointed when I think I need a power tool to do it. It's a great video, easy to follow and very inspirational.
th-cam.com/video/Tx-KH_hRAms/w-d-xo.html
Tip
You can use a drill with a large bit wrapped in masking tape as a lathe, it only really works well for polishing and final shaping but I never needed it for anymore. It just makes life 1000 times easier lol
I'm really good at soldering, so I think I'm gonna try this
Well give it a try and let me know how it turns out 😁👍
I was thinking the exact same thing. It's kind of related after all. Need to learn the safety measurements for this craft tho.
Good with a soldering iron or with a torch?
It's a totally different technique
Wowee u r a very talented soul my friend. ❤️
Thank you very much 😊
Looking at this ring you've made, I'm thinking a couple things.
I'm actually trying that. I managed a bag of copper shavings from lowes
Ur voice is so calming im falling asleep boss 🎉
It was pretty easy to follow along with you. Thank you for the lesson.
Thank you for the awesome video! Great tip on sawing between the silver ends before you solder them closed - mine are usually crooked after filing. So excited for your other tutorials! :)
There is another tool that does this even better. You can see me using it in my newer videos. 😁👍
Really cool project, ring looks great!!!

oh my gosh thank you for the measuring formula, it makes so much sense; i was wondering why the ones i made always turn out a few mm smaller but it seems very obvious now xD. and the rest of the video is also very instructive and well done
Great to see you make the ring from scratch! You’ve made a beautiful thing there. Well done!🇬🇧👍👍

Yeah that’s kinda what I thought too. About the low spots . I just thought I’d ask and get your opinion. And Thank you 😊
What thicknesses are used to make this ring & I would appreciate if you would tell me .
Gorgeous ring. Awesome tutorial.
Nice job.You are a very good ring maker.Bravo.!!!!!!!!
Thank you 😁
you should make a wet table with a mandrel in it and put changeable flex wheels, I made one cheap! great stuff m8 keep it up!

Thank you for this tutorial. I like the fact that you showed ways to create without having to use expensive tools & machinery. Great job! Question: can you use any kind of super glue for this project?
You should be able to just test it before hand to make sure it doesn't react odd and it strong
@@GomeowCreations Thank you!
love the ring!
random question though, how do make sure the edges of the ring do not hurt your skin? is it special rounding of the edges or is it just sanding it down more?
thanks
You can just sand them more and polish it so it's smooth 😄
