The broken sprockets have affected a small batch of pedal drives due to the plastic recipe not properly being mixed during its manufacturing. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to know which drives were affected by this defect. This is probably why your second drive was also affected as it was part of the same batch.
Some people have also had rod issues due to the rods not being fully screwed in.
What you will be receiving is from a new batch of drives where the plastic recipe has been changed to eliminate the possibility of defects due to improper mixing and which are equipped with stronger 316-grade stainless steel rods which are properly screwed in with Loctite. We believe this should eliminate any breakage from normal use. :)

Thank you for your response. I look forward to testing the upgraded hydrive and posting an update soon.

I just purchased a 130 hd online today to pick up in Newnan Georgia tomorrow or Thursday. Should I be cancelling my pick up?! Who wants to have to worry about whether they got a 'bad recipe' drive? Whatever lot size was 'the batch'... should be recalled now, or simply overnight a drive that pelican knows is ok to the customer, and let them return their original drive. That way you allow us to go out with confidence knowing that we won't be pedaling a few miles from our car, and then the drive breaks. All of a sudden you are paddling, which is why I wanted a pedal kayak, to minimize paddling... unless I wanted to! To be able to cover more area..go further when out. Now all I feel is a doubt in this drive..not a good feeling.

And not a word back from pelican international. Help us(people who have bought this kayak) have a little more faith in not worrying about the drives breaking on us!

I spoke with them on the phone three days ago and they are mailing me a new and improved reworked drive as stated above. However they sated they would do their best to get it mailed out in the next day or so and it's been over 3 days and I have no shipping confirmation yet. The email I received said they would ship it within three business days. I'm anxiously awaiting receipt of the new Drive so I can use my boat.

@@wfrederick2501 I pedaled mine in a small lake for it's trial run. I have never used a mirage like drive, so I can't really say what stiff should feel like. But even after loosening up the drive, is still felt a little stiff to me..but it didn't break. I only used it for two hours though...so maybe I just didn't pedal long enough. I did not want to take a chance on pedaling on big water, and having to paddle back. They seem to talk a lot, but their actions(addressing the bad drives problem with a recall or exchange program) don't reflect their words. If they know they have a problem they should simply address it and man up, instead of waiting on people to be stranded.

I decided to go ahead and pick up the kayak today. I just finished assembling it in my living room. The pedals were very very stiff. I followed the suggestions from pelican and loosened them up. The boat seems like it's pretty good boat. It seems bigger than it looks in the pictures. But time will tell. Hopefully by loosening up the nuts on the drive, I won't have the problem of it breaking on me.

I had a problem with both mast rods breaking while pedaling with short strokes through some grass flats.Seems like the steel may have a bad heat treat. They did send replacements within two weeks,, however, it has not been back on the water yet for further failure. There is a guy on TH-cam showing the rearmost sprocket failure occurring due to a screw backing out.

The updated pelican drive they sent held up much better. I used it quite a bit and it did not fail. They blamed the other ones on a bad batch of plastic sprockets. I sold the kayaks a while later and upgraded to a Key West center console so I could take the whole family fishing.

I have 2 of them and have went through 4 drives. Same as u each drive makes it 1 or 2 outings. They have been great about replacing the drives but the problem is the drives are very cheaply made and now I believe my warranty is up .

    Hi
Anyone have a terrible squeaking noise? I tried one with the hydrive 1 and it had this problem. Someone with a new pelican 110 had the problem too even though the problem was supposed to be solved.

2 km into 32 km trip mine broke too. I am buying a new hobie drive for $1330 CDN. Paid $2000 for the Catch 130 and the garbage drive it came with. Boat is good. Not the drive system. Weak and unreliable drive.

Im on my 4th drive now bc they keep breaking in the exact same spot as yours. Each time was on the first or second use, just like yours. Great customer service from pelican though.

Actually Pelican solved the issue. The second pedal drive they sent me never failed. Apparently they had a bad batch of plastics and both of my kayaks happened to come from the same store and out of the same batch.

thanks guys, that's enough information to let me know I am not interested in one. Pelican thinks your time is not important. Not enough product testing. Pelican has its customers doing the product testing for them. Once the product was identified, their should have been a recall on the drives. People want to use the pedal kayaks on their leisure time, not waiting for customer service to fix a problem that should have never happened.

Once they sent the replacement drive, I've had no more problems. It was apparently a bad batch of plastics for that rear sprocket. Both boats I bought had sprockets from the same batch. Anyway I'd like to say Pelican did make it right and ultimately they make a really nice product. You get a lot of bang for your buck.
