    Pelican just released a prototype pedal drive kayak scheduled to hit the market in the near future. This kayak is the Pelican Catch 130HD HyDryve! It uses fin style pedal drive system that you might find similar to the Hobie kayaks but some differences were noted. It was very smooth to operate in my opinion. It felt smoother to pedal than my Hobie M180 pedal drive. The pedal drive doesn't have reverse, but the drive can be flipped backwards to achieve that. Overall, this kayak is incredibly lightweight, stable, and features a drive which simply works beautifully. It also is one of the lowest priced pedal kayaks on the market at $1,499.
    The drive well seems similar to that of Hobie kayaks in terms of dimensions so I imagine it will share some compatibility with Hobie motor kits (to be determined)!

    I don't know what to say! Well maybe I do. If I wouldn't have recently bought a SP13, I totally would have bought one of these at that price!!!
    I think they may have even improved on the Hobie design. When the drive mount for the Hobie wears out (I've never seen it happen, but there's always a possibility) its shot because its just molded plastic. The Pelican is a removable mount and can be replaced (it looks like) and that's a great improvement! Also, I noticed on the rod holders that are staggered, one looks like its facing forward (staging?) and the other facing back (trolling?) and that's an interesting design.
    When I first seen the drive I thought the fins were too short to get any speed, but it looks like that thing can move!
    Over all, they have my blessing on this one!!! They are going to sell a ton of them!!!
    Thank you for bringing this to those of us who couldn't be there Justin!!!

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All great points. I do love the staggered rod holders. More options for positioning rods. The short fins don't seem to have an issue getting the kayak moving quick. Thanks Larry!

      Shokenryu my instinct and past experience with a variety of kayaks would say no. The bow has no flare and is really flat. I’m sure it is possible to surf launch but not ideal hull shape in bow.
      The Riot Mako I filmed for $999 was designed to go through surf. That was one of the design goals.

      The buttery smoooothness could just be a reflection of what a thermoformed kayak feels like on the water. It just glides better so in theory it's easier on the paddler/pedaler.

    Congratulations to Pelican. One thing I see right away. This kayak is easy to paddle making it very versatile at an outstanding price. I own two Hobie PA. I wouldn’t trade them for anything on lakes but I can’t comfortably take them in my shallow rivers and creeks because they are to big to paddle. This kayak has the best of both worlds. Looks great for lakes and shallow water rivers and creeks where those big Smallies live.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RIVER GOONIE yes you can. I also would bet you could use a Hobie pedal drive interchangeably in the Pelican drive well. Could likely put a M180 drive in one as well and have reverse. The drive looks to have identical dimensions.

    • @LarryTalbot_1313
      @LarryTalbot_1313 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently, they have locking pins that keep the drive in place. Release the locking pins, turn the drive around , lock it back down and you are in reverse.

    • @ewoodjeep
      @ewoodjeep 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larry have you tried this yourself ? It’s not like I am there to give it try. How do you know you can simply turn the pedal drive around and the pedal drive well housing will accept the pedal drive. Then you couldn’t properly lock the pins or the locking mechanism correctly and drive would be secure.

      Fin drive for going in ultra shallow water....I recommend Lightning kayak for fin drive kayak on a budget. Has lots of features I like. I like propeller for better controlling kayak in moving water and currents. My favorite pedal kayak for the money right now is Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL and Old Town Topwater PDL. Old Town and Ocean Kayak PDL series drives are awesome. I’ve never been paid by them. I’ve never received a kayak from them. I’m not sponsored. Hopefully in future they will work with me so I can review more of their kayaks in depth.

      KayakDIY Did the height seem ok for fishing as far as not being to low?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrJody1978 the height?
      The height of the seat was adequate and comparable to other pedal kayaks. The side gunnels sit above water line plenty (with 195lbs) and leave me with no concerns. The kayak is good for flats water and light chop. However, at this time I wouldn’t recommend it for offshore ocean waters. The bow has very little flare and I have found than my Pelican kayaks typically get a lot of hull slap trying to go through large waves/surf. So lakes, rivers, and inshore/bay waters is where I feel this kayak can be recommended. It was quite fast on the water and pedal drive was very smooth. I anticipate more pedal drive kayaks from Pelican.

    @FishFinder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Looks very interesting and not a bad price either compared to Hobie. A few questions for you. Those fins looked to be shorter than the hobie turbo fins. How was the speed on this kayak compared to a similar hobie? Also, how was the stability? I know you stood up but what were your thoughts there... finally, the comfort of the seat? Thanks.... Eric

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pedal effort was easier and smoother than most Hobie kayaks I have been on. I’m a big Hobie fan and even bought a $6,700 Hobie TI. I love my Hobie’s, but at this price my first pedal kayak would have been this...not a Hobie. If I am telling you that I think the Pelican HyDryve pedals better and smoother than several Hobie’s I have owned you can believe it. I have a similar Hobie drive with shorter fins like this one. This drive visually reminds me of the early Hobie drives but immediately I noticed it felt smoother to pedal and didn’t take much exertion to get up to speed. The kayak is very lightweight and so I would say even with the shorter fins it moves on par with several Hobie Outbacks I have been on.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Seat comfort level: 7/10. Could be better but I would be very happy with it at that price. I could be out on it all day. I put Bonafides SS127 seat and Hobie’s Vantage seat at 10/10 for reference. Remember this is a prototype. However, as a prototype they scored in my opinion.

    Thank you for this video! A few questions:
    1-How is the top speed relative to either Hobie or other brands? Someone suggested the top speed maybe isn't as high as the standard Mirage Drive because of the shorter fins, but they couldn't really tell by the demo.
    2-MSRP of $1499, but what is MSRP of just the drive mechanism (if it's truly interchangable with Hobie like suggested in other comments, it opens up interchangability and cheaper upgrade path from Hobie owners)?
    3-Does Pelican have any plans to release other version models around a pedal drive console, or update their other products to come with a pedal drive ready console, but no pedal drive included?

      It does share alot of similarities. However, as I said it feels a bit smoother to pedal. I'm no stranger to Hobies. I own several. This clearly felt smoother and easier to get up to speed. The fins are short unlike Hobie Turbo fins. However, this kayak is pretty lightweight and seems to take less effort and propulsion to really get up and go!

    How does this compare to the Riot mako 10/12? I'm at a toss up and the price is dead even.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shokenryu I personally would buy the Mako 12 right now. Not many dealers in my area so I would buy via amazon (link below). Mako 12 currently is the same price as the Mako 10 on Amazon. Mako 10 has shipping costs that make it same price as 12.
      Mako has a better hull shape for cutting through heavy surf and waves than other low priced pedal kayaks. The Mako is rotomolded HDPE vs the Pelican HyDryve is twin sheet thermoformed HMWPE. The Mako 10/12 has instant reverse. The Pelican doesn’t have reverse unless you possibly rotate the pedal drive. Both brands of pedal drives are open to elements and designed to handle saltwater. Some people say Riot Mako drive is a bit noisy but I didn’t think so and they forget that it was designed to be water lubricated. Both myself and my dad who is an engineer were impressed by the Mako and the value for the money. I used to work in rotomolding and my dad deals with lots of manufacturing. We think it is the best deal on a pedal kayak at this time. Brooklyn kayak company makes a cheap pedal kayak but it needs work and didn’t feel reliable. The Mako feels reliable and well made. Riot has been making kayaks for long time.

      The only thing going for me with the catch 130hd was the hobie drive and the open deck design with that price point. Then I searched for price comparison.
      Thats where the riot came in. I would love to troll for salmon and crabbing near the bay and trout/bass in the lakes near home.

      Juan Martinez suggest contacting dealer you bought from or contact Pelican International directly via their website. That is how I would go about it.

      Jack B at moment I would say anything that is relatively calm waters. Most Pelicans have pretty flat hulls with no bow flare for surf/waves.

    How was the chair? Was rudder made differently from Hobie?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seat comfort level: 7/10. Could maybe be slightly better but I would be very happy with it at that price. I could be out on it all day no problem. I put Bonafides SS127 seat and Hobie’s Vantage seat at 10/10 rating for reference. Remember this is a prototype. However, as a prototype they scored in my opinion.
      As for the rudder it was different than Hobie’s and similar to a typical universal style rudder.

    Hi, does the seat have high and low adjustability or is it just one position? It seemed a bit low to me, also how do you lower the ruder into position? Thanks for the video

    The Pescador Pilot is also $1499 and has a roromolded hull. I like this pedal drive but would never think about buying a kayak that's not roromolded like the Pelican.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pescador Pilot is usually $1799. We only saw one at $1499 on sale but still had pricey shipping of $149. Pelican often gets their kayaks into common big box stores so many folks can avoid paying that shipping. I have several Pelicans and like the lighterweight hulls. We have a Pelican kayak that has taken a ton of abuse in our saltwater gulf waters.
      That is just my opinion but respect everyones opinions. I have no connection to Pelican and no sponsorships. I am just giving honest opinions based on my test and past knowledge of many kayaks I have owned and reviewed.

    • @jerrykrobby
      @jerrykrobby 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      KayakDIY I appreciate your honest feedback. Here in Texas the Pescador Pilot has been at $1499 at local Academy stores for about a month. Now Amazon has them at $1499 free shipping. We have one and its solid for sure! In my mind it's only a matter of time before the 2 piece Pelican hull separates.

      @NiteWolfeFishing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Before you go hating on the pelican twin sheet thermoformed hull look into it more. It is flat out one of the toughest hulls on the market. Rotomolding doesnt guaranty a good hull. You can be roto and still be thin. Yes thermo has a seem. Ask anyone that deals with seeming any materiel and youll find out if done right the seem is the strongest point.
      Look at a cross section of the pelican catch hull at the seem and see that it is double thin and 100% fused making it solid, thick and durable.

    • @LarryTalbot_1313
      @LarryTalbot_1313 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a great deal of respect for Pelican, despite what people say about them. I have rented many different Pelican's over the years and I can tell you, if you got abuse in mind, they can take it! You would be surprised what some people do to rentals. Those things are like tanks and can definitely take it, but yet paddle like a dream!!!

    • @jerrykrobby
      @jerrykrobby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +NiteWolfe Fishing I'm not hating on anything I was just stating my concerns about them. I've worked in a fabrication shop welding PVC together so I'm aware of the process. There were times where the welds did not hold for whatever reason. I'm sure Pelican has a stringent QC system in place to try to prevent this from happening. However my experience tells me it is possible for these hulls to separate (at some point). If you have one and are happy with it great! There just not an option I am considering in my search for my next kayak.

  • @jakemynameis93
    @jakemynameis93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Since it is so light, how did the quality feel of the hull? Thick or thin?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The hull felt solid. The deck felt nice and stiff without flexing despite my 195lbs. I own several Pelican kayaks, Hobies, and more. Never had issues with my Pelicans. They are made via TST (Twin Sheet Thermoforming) vs Rotomolding (powder plastic rotational molding). The seam on the side of the kayak is the thickest part of the kayak. The sheets are fused together by melting the sheets together...THEY ARE NOT GLUED (common myth). There kayaks are made with HMWPE (high molecular weight polyethylene) vs HDPE like many other kayaks. Hope this helps. My Instagram (kayakdiy) has a post showing a cut cross section of Pelican hull.

    Is it a solid mold or still 2 molds?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is TST made with HMWPE "RamX premium". I have several Pelican TST kayaks and never have had issue yet. I love how lightweight and easy to transport they are. I also own and paid $6.7k for a Hobie TI kayak. I'm very non-bias.
      Rotomolded kayaks aren't the gold standard. I worked in rotomolding for a long time. You can easier get thin spots in rotomolding and the flange where two mold halves come together can lead to small pinholes. Rotomolding involves powdered plastic and if the powder doesn't coat well you get thin spots. This is less of an issue with TST Pelican kayaks. Also, the seam on Pelican kayaks is the thickest part of the hull.

      In 1890, the Sherman Antitrust Act became the 1st legislation passed by Congress to limit monopolies. Would you like to pay $600 for an EpiPen or $20 for the generic version of the same thing? And if you watched and actually listened to what Justin has said, Pelican has made improvements. So it's actually not a copy.
