Designers maybe, but all artists go by feel for the day or the object, and that's exactly what you do. I hope you sell your items for a good penny because even though it goes fast sometimes you always put your soul into it, that's probably what we all love to se.

I don't like to turn Cedar, but guess what, it's so beautiful I keep on turning it. Sometimes
the reward is worth the effort. You have quite an award there, I love it.

Phil, love this piece! I turned a jam chuck for my vases that tappers way down like a long blunt nose cone, I can jam my vases, of any throat diameter, and take that tenon off or work the base. I learn something new EVERYTIME I watch your videos. Your voice is a common sound in our house! Thank you for all you do!

They wood Turner is a designer. You do put designs in your bowls. You decide when to, and when not to leave the bark, leave a crack leave a hole and whatever natural artwork she stay or not. I have no doubt that this piece you’re holding will turn into a beautiful vase. You did good. The red framed by the lighter color I think it’s pretty.

That's a very COOL piece Phil! I turn things to enjoy and sell so others can enjoy them and a lot of times family and friends love them so much that I generally give them away so all in all if I sat down and did the math I'm probably going in the hole which doesn't matter I'm having fun in my old days!!!

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Wow that is so disappointing to hear. I turn a little of what I call Juniper up hear in southern Ontario Canada. It is often called Red Cedar as well. But boy does it smell nice. I have worked with White and Western Red Cedar so much that I have become nose blind to the smell.

I get your point about having bark all the way around, but in this instance I don't agree. I think having the heartwood, then the sapwood then the "underbark" and finally the bark itself adds so much interest to the finished article.
As for what's in the block, waiting to get out, obviously it's a much smaller vase, coming out at a 45° angle from the base of the big vase! It's as clear as day!
Once more, a beautiful piece of work! You just keep getting better and better at this!
    Well done, Phil.
As you say, another one "in the books" - these "books" must be more like Accountants' Ledgers by now, the number of magnificent pieces you've documented over the years!!

🙋‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Hi Phil when you said you would be creating an emerging vase I didn't know what you meant then half way through I understood what you meant and what a great idea given the irregular shape of the wood. As you where working away I thought you were going to create what would have been a foot for the vase emerging from the base but at the end you explained why you didn't but left it to the viewers imagination. I must say what a beautiful piece of art you turned on the lathe, fantastic grain, colours, and finish I can totally see why your daughter has claimed it. Oh by the way I hope you enjoyed your spaghetti. LOL.

    Phil,
The master craftsman might approach a project with trepidation and a certain amount of uncertainty. But he knows his tools, begins his job and emerges with the product he envisioned. Everybody else creates scrap for the fire. Since your piece is not destined for the fire, it shows the skill of a master.
    Keep the aspidistra flying!
    God bless,
    Paul

Howdy from WYO! Great video for sure. I have learned a lot from your videos. Your explanation of your thought process is very appreciated. You remind me of Bob Ross (painting) and his calm entertaining/educational commentary. Not so much for the hair!!! The concept of a shape emerging was very inspiring. It helped me decide what to do with a branch with a saw cut that got partially grown over. It was everything my old, small lathe to swing something so out of balance. It was definitely worth the thought process, time, and effort. THANKS for all you do, Dave.
