Good Afternoon, I do like those colors so does my wife, your lucky to get some. I had to sneak out that one ...lol got plenty still. But that is spalting the tree was sick perhaps from me moving it at about a year old in 1976. I showed a piece of it to someone in the know and they said " that tree had some real issues " still a great bowl. Stay safe and be well. Dennis 8:518:51
Love this bowl. Making the bowl smaller on the bottom wastes the same amount of wood, just more on the outside and less on the inside 😂 how ever there is less space on the inside.😮 I say you made the best choice. I love it.
I see a fat bird with a worm in its beak! I love the difference between the heartwood and the sapwood. The wood type is lovely, and it’s different to your usual work but just as beautiful. A master at whatever form you choose. Take care of yourself and stay warm in that weather.
Good Day 🌅Phil , I was surprised you turned so much of it away, though it does look very nice, and you have to face the fact there is definitely something trying to get out of your bowl, 🥣 😂, definitely able to hear the rain, and I thought I heard a truck at some point, I’ve finally got a date for my operation on my hand , carpal tunnel syndrome , stay safe keep up the great work of art, from France
First off , thanks for istening ! I was screaming at you to do a recess and you did ,And then when you you weree doing your final cuts I again yelled to " STOP " ! And you listened ! lol ! Phil I think the shape you gave it show off all the features the piece has to offer. Especially the line created by the heart wood and the sap wood. And the dark line between is topping on the cake. So I like it a lot! Keep up the great work my friend, Gary
Wonderful Phil. You inspired me to take up woodturning when we were locked up during the covid nonsense. It is wonderful to see that you are still creating masterpieces. Because that is what they are, with a little help from nature.........
That is hilarious, I've never been accused of having an imagination, but that's the first thing I thought I f when you asked what we may have seen in there.
The first thing I saw was a dolphin. Another masterpiece, Phil. Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship. I have never looked in my socks for a Norwegian maple burl ... maybe I should check them. :)
Phil beautiful bowl and beautiful colors I still like the bigger diameter bottom bowls that you usually do but good for you for trying something new thanks for another AWSOME video Terry
It's never a 'waste of time' watching you turn any old piece of wood into a thing of beauty Phil. It is a delightful, yes a stunning bowl. I totally understand you not wanting to 'waste ' wood when you turn but, as I have said many times before that it is good to work outside of ones 'comfort zone' occasionally, & believe me, you have turned a beautiful bowl Phil. The colours are stunning right from the bark to the heartwood & I love what appears to be the 'outlining of the colour changes. Keep safe, healthy & warm during your Winter. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
That’s a beauty, Phil! I really like the shape, though I understand your discomfort about wasting wood. The colors and bark are great too! One of my favorites of yours. 😊
Hi Phil, love this piece, it looks so smooth, and shiney, and the color variation is like a 2 tone paint job. I though the little dark crack in the inside, looked like some kind of arcade game dragon. Thanks for showing us!
Hi Phil I see a porpoise head on the inside!! Love the demarcation lines between the bark, sapwood and heartwood, truly a unique piece. Stick with your thoughts on design they are better. Could you undercut and leave more of the bark on the top? As you can see you have convinced me to stay with the bark lol Take care Bob
It's probably good for us to get out of our comfort zone now and again. I don't think you could turn a bad piece if you tried. Great job that brought this best the wood had to offer. Thanks for sharing.
Bradford pears are beautiful trees but have a relatively short lifespan. They grow amazingly fast and become quite brittle as a result. As such, in windstorms they often feed on mirrors of trucks parked within reach of their falling limbs. Unfortunately, I used to feed mine regularly until I got smart and cut it down. I miss the beautiful white flowers each spring, though, and had no idea how pretty the wood would be. You did a wonderful job of coaxing a lovely bowl from the blank. Thanks, Phil!
“Nice dark, tight bark!” Phil, you should change your handle to ‘Woodturners’ Poet’. Seriously, you’ve always had a great handle on your Woodturning, and we are the beneficiaries of that. Great work!
I’ve turned a fair amount of Bradford pear, and it normally is very nice and buttery smooth to turn. Although I’m jealous, because none of mine has such dark heartwood like that! Amazing job as always, Phil. See ya on the next one 👍🏼
Good evening, Phil. A very interesting wood. I'm like you about not wanting to waste the wood. However, the change of shape is a good excersise for the mind. I was saying, recess not tenon. It took three times but you finally heard me. I really like the piece and the flawless finish. Excellent!
I’m glad you noticed the change in the design, that was a tough decision! 😊 You gotta yell louder, Ray! It's noisy here in the shop but, I finally heard you!
Just amazing how nature works, the colours and lines and of course the bark is really cool, I like how you tapered it up. Nice job Phil. All the best to you. Regards Jim
What a delightful little gem of a bowl. For what it is worth, I think this illustrates the value of listening to your own woodturning instincts, and expressing your own style. I like the bowl now, but I think that I liked it just a smidgen more when it had those straighter, taller sides. The contrast between the heartwood and the sapwood gave it a sort of 'pinto pony' appearance, which I found most charming. Many thanks to you, and to Dennis. (No offense to Dave, whose own sense of woodturning style in impeccable, I'm sure.)
Cool job Phil.... gorgeous colours, inside is an early Jim Henson Sock Puppet... Toad and a fly....perfect balance of warmth and skill. There is no wasted wood here just a decision whether the volume is visualised on the inside or the outside . The spalting clouds are really interesting, as is the spalting line between hart and soft ....really makes this piece super distinctive. SUPER JOB AND AS USUAL THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING.
Woo hoo! What a cool bowl. And an inspiration. I got my hands on a small stack of Bradford pear a while back and its been drying out. Can't wait to lay a gouge against it. Thanks Phil!
Such a beautiful piece Phil. As always you get to make an example of how to get the piece of wood that you're working with right. Happy turning my friend 😊
Beautiful colors that contrast nicely with each other and the bark. I have turned pear; it's wonderful. It is also very hard. One of my more useful pieces is a mallet I made a few years ago. It's perfect for hammering a spur center into end grain. Pear also makes great tool handles since it's very strong. None of mine has flashy grain like cherry but it still makes a very handsome turning.
Thank You Phil, Thank You Dennis... Very enjoyable listening/watching as you negotiate how you want to navigate each piece of wood you decide to tackle every Thursday. Bradford Pear is wonderful with the bark A#1. Love listening to your play by play thinking through your game plan. Phil your turning is always fun but the effort you put on the finish carries the weight. Without your wonderful finish there would be only half a bowl. Your "Ant Eater" on the inside looks to me to be a UFO flying out of its cave inside the Planet Bradford. Very famous planet Phil. It is kind of Pear shaped, ha... until next time... TM
The colors remind me of the Grand Canyon. One way I see a bird with a seed in its mouth, turn it upside down I see a bear where you see a fat ant eater. In the sap wood I imagine etchings by the natives who lived there years ago. I love finding pictures in wood. Call me crazy but I think I’m in good company.😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil back to what you do best creating bowls, this week's piece is beautiful I love the grains and the colours. When you see an anteater I see the smile of a dolphin. Bye till next week.
Gosh, that turned out nice! I saw a dolphin, so I guess I’m about as crazy as you! 😂 I had a lovely time visiting friends and family in south SnohoCo, and am back home safe and sound. I see a smiling whale in the piece. After watching you turn this piece, i dont feel do bad for losing my bradford pear tree. Cant wait to get it cut up & gried for turning. Amazing work Phil.
Another job beautifully executed. A wishful suggestion: I'd lke to see the view perpendicular to the axis of the lathe, looking at the side of the piece as you are establishing the outside of the piece. I also like you explaining why you make the design decisions as you shape. Keep up the good work, Phil.
Thank you, I appreciate the suggestion! 😀 I do sometimes show an overhead view that reveals the shape forming. The problem with that is, the wood then blocks the view of the chisel and how I'm holding it. But, I will try to show it more often. I can't really get the camera behind me and over my shoulder, which might be better but no way to do it.
Great bowl Phil, much more traditional than what you normally do, should sell well if you’re inclined that way. I think more like the part you see of a moray eel. Your finishes on bowls are amazing. This bowl is just shellac, wow.
Wow, Phil! That is a GORGEOUS bowl!! I love the color contrasts. That slight 'shadowing' in the lighter color wood along that well defined edge is so special I think. Another beautiful piece of artwork, Phil! Thank you!❤❤
I really like the wood. As always listening to your work is fun. I think I may have liked it a little better with the rounder shape to the side. I thought the shape inside the bowl reminded me of Arkansas.

What a stunning piece of wood Phil. Really lovely colours. You did a beautiful job on it. Looking like a big fat dolphin to me. 👍🏴

Thanks, Arland! 😀
I thought I saw a dolphin, especially with the mouth. Beautiful Phil!
For me, the dolphin is upside down from my anteater. I should have mentioned him cause he sure is there! Thank you! 😀
The head of a bird. Super. Cool

I really like the wood. As always listening to your work is fun. I think I may have liked it a little better with the rounder shape to the side. I thought the shape inside the bowl reminded me of Arkansas.
I knew someone would see a state in there, Barry and it's you! 😀
Very nice bowl! I see the chicken with the bug!
