Why XBox One controllers won't turn on or charge. Fatal flaw in Microsoft's design.

  • This video shows the reason why so many XBox One controller fail to power on out of nowhere. It's a bad design caused my Microsoft placing one button on a separate pcb board, which make every button press of it push the board apart until the connectors eventually tear off.

    Went through like 3 controllers already. On one of them the USB port just stopped working, so I get rechargeable batteries for it. Few days after the controller wouldn't turn on with the batteries. On another controller the Y button just randomly stopped working, and for Y button is a very important button for me. The one I am using now just stops out of nowhere as well. It's a wired controller and I used the USB on another device and it worked just fine, but when I use it on my controller, it just turns off and on.

  • @adamruss656

    It's been forwarded to them by one of their specialists but I doubt they'll change it at this point. Probably carried the design over into the slim controllers too but I haven't seen one yet to confirm.

  • @Costinmusca
    @Costinmusca 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    What they need to do and should've done in the first place, would be to *not use surface mounted connectors*, but instead use connectors with pins that pass through the PCB. Surface mount connectors should be *only* used when they are making a connection through pressure force like "spring loaded". But they have *no interest* in making solid hardware that surpasses the warranty period. The quicker it breaks, the better for them. This is going on for years in the industry at all levels and it's nothing new. Such design flaws are usually intended and thought out with "great care and attention to detail". They must hit that sweet spot where a product will function correctly just enough so it would surpass the warranty period, but not by much and then would fail. The shorter the period from when the warranty expires to when the device fails is, the better.

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No kidding. That's why they will only warranty them for 90 days from purchase. At least the PS4 controller have a single plane for the buttons AND its done on a removable ribbon layout so it can be easily a cheaply replaced should a button stop functioning. Sony definitely gets the win on controller design, even though I normally hate some of the proprietary measures and connectors they use.

    • @derwentalia
      @derwentalia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it started in the late 70s early 80s. its called "manufactured redundancy" or "engineered redundancy", and youre right this is a common business practice. what big corporations were finding in the 70s/80s is that consumers were not buying as much product as they would like them to because their product was too well manufactured. the materials were too quality.....what happens if the product is excellent design and quality? sales go down because of loss of repeat sales.
      so now engineers are tasked with finding that "sweet spot" in order to do exactly what youve described. this is not impossible, the technology is there and it continues to "improve" every day.
      capitalism = if a business can find a way to make more money and if that includes inferior quality to increase repeat sales then of course they will do it.
      capitalism is probably THE MOST criminal economic system ever invented and not just because of the inherent fraud involved, but because it makes commodities of everything with almost zero accountaibilty for big corps

    I think this is the problem my elite controller has I recently bought. When I put batteries in and hold the power button down on the controller it lights up flashes and when I let go instantly dies so I’m guessing a capacitor is fried but I don’t know witch one since I haven’t opened up my controller. I’m wondering is this fixable, is it worth being fixed or is there nothing I can do.

    My controller was unable to charge because the "plug and play" battery and the "pins" of the controller that charges the battery didn't connect properly. I tried to move the battery a bit (pushing it towards the pins) and the battery began to charge. I hope that this issue don't be a commun issue because I'm going to change the controller but not the "play and charge" kit...

    the "pads" aren't actually being torn off. they're just falling off. most of these controllers are made VERY cheaply and when those cheap components heat up, they fail. it takes far more pressure to shear off the solder points than it does to unplug the connection. the problem is simply cheap solder and breadboards separating when stressed.

  • @JLskating

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Leal if batteries dont work and it wont power on even when connected to the console, something has probably shorted out or isnt making a connection. If it's not easily visible you'd have to spend a lot of time testing each trace to see where the failure is, and also have a schematic to know the values for each component. may not be worth your time to pinpoint it. I'd first try hooking it up to the console via usb while system is off. Then turn it on using the console's power button. After you get to the dashboard hit the home button to try to turn the controller on. if that doesn't work, you likely have internal component failure.

    If you run into that firmware update problem when you accidentally move your controller or press a button like I did. Plug in the malfunctioning controller without the batteries into the XBox. And with the good controller turned on and ready to use...go to your CONTROLLER SETTTINGS and just SELECT the FIRMWARE UPDATE....Xbox should automatically tell you that the wired controller is being updated. There's also this CO-PILOT OPTION I went ahead and turned that on...it seemed logical. My screen showed 2 controllers. Hope this helps.

    do you hear a click when you press the sync/bind button? pull off the grate along the side with the sync button. then make sure the plastic plate behind the button is in place. if it has moved or isn't there you'll need to pinch the backside of the bind button on the console. an alternative is to hook up a micro USB cable to the controller and it'll auto-sync.

      Not easily and not without some skill and micro soldering. Trace wires need to be soldered from the board to the connector for each of the connections or you have to repair the pads on the board and then resolder the connector. I don't recommend it unless you have practice with fixing torn pads because you need a repair kit and isn't something on which you can just wing it

      Christian Escobedo you've been lucky. ps4s overheat, the power supplies keep changing because they short out, and many many many ps4s have already had to have the chips recalled because of the crappy solder. if they didn't cram everything into a small space with little airflow it wouldn't be a problem. my Xbox one stays quiet. it's big but lots of airflow. that may change with the new slims though since it's less space with the power supply put inside.

      XLS Gaming Have you fixed it?

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For those with this issue I recommend one of two things. One is to connect a micro usb charger to the controller and plug it into the usb port. It'll sync this way. If that doesn't work, it could be a problem with the wireless chip that in on top of the inner case. The other issue with this is when you press the sync button on the xbox, make sure you hear a click and possible feel the resistance from the plastic piece behind it. If that piece is moved or missing there will be nothing for the button to press against and it won't trigger the sync to start. The left side vent come off pretty easily. Remove it and check to see that the plastic piece behind the sync button is seated correctly.

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the sync button on the controller doesn't work, it could be a defective home button (check to see if it works at all by pressing it when in a game and see if it takes you back to the home screen.) If it doesn't, it may or may not be fixable, depending on what's causing it in the controller.

      I agree with everything said in the video. From personal experience, I had two controllers both go out on me with similar problems. They both just stopped working after almost 365 days exactly. Seems pretty suspicious Microsoft. If you are making faulty products that are designed to fail, someone should file a lawsuit against you. Especially if you continue looking the other way and not take responsibility for your faulty product. Haven't you heard of recalls? Happens all the time with other products. Why is this any different? Get your shit together Microsoft

    in most cases no. I. the cases that you can it's a gigantic problem of soldering trace wires from one board to the other for every torn pad.

    • @dokaplan1
      @dokaplan1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if this post is responding the sync/usb issue guy or not, but have you been able to solder them back on? I haven't opened up the controller I have that has this problem (gave it a little shake and heard it rattle) yet so I haven't seen the damage in person.

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dokaplan rattling can sometimes be a loose magnet for the trigger. USB ports can be replaced yes if desoldered properly without removing the solder pads. however, if no controllers will sync, you're probably dealing with the chip on the top of the inside case of the xbox going bad. those are an easy fix. just replace the bad part

    4 of my kids controllers all started dying about the same time. No way it was the controllers I thought...too odd they all started about same time. More likely the Rx on the console. But even without that, they would not power up at friends. Took the first two apart and BOTH had exactly the same problem you show. OMFG...I was going to try to solder the socket back on the board, but the leads were so flexed that some were broken off the connector too. Likely the LAST one that was trying to hold it together. Now I'm trying to figure out if it is even worth trying to buy a replacement top board (the one that the socket breaks off of that the B button pushes on...but given that it has the two analog controls and the processor, probably that is the $$$ part. Sigh. There goes 4x $60. F!$#@k Micro$oft. Why they didn't let XBox 360 controllers work too pisses me off. They actually work if you use USB, but they made the wireless tech incompatible. $#$#@k. Thanks for your hints. Interesting SIDE fact, both of mine had the 3.5mm jack just loose and I don't think it broke loose, it is just a tension touch to the pads (?) which seems really stupid, but both of my kids had indicated that the sound wasn't working anymore on theirs either...well, both had bent pins on the 3.5mm that no longer pushed tension (if that is what they were before) to make connections. Sigh.

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff McClain you are correct. All 3.5mm Jack's just sit between the boards. The minor tension between those clips hold them in place. Once the boards start to separate and lose tension,the jack will no longer make a full connection and the audio starts to fail.

  • @Finditfixitphilipit
    @Finditfixitphilipit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't mean to sound horrible but I fix controllers and consoles all day every day . for starters you are not supposed to pull the boards apart like that you are supposed to use a separating tool . yes they do slightly push the board away nowhere near what you show and would not make a difference what so ever. if your connected is busted off the board you can superglue it back to the board and scrape the green off the board where the tabs connect and reconnect via micro solder. so there for it is not as broke as you say it is. yes it's far easier to replace with another board but finding one is 1 expensive and 2 very hard to get hold of.

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philip Samuels while that may be true, the skills and tools it takes to do those types of repair is not within the average gamer's ability. And to pay someone to do that repair is not cheap either. As far as the pressure, I'm afraid we will have to disagree because it's an issue exclusive to Xbox one controllers and they are the ones using this bad design. And with repeated examples of them being separated from the board, without the controller ever being opened, there is enough evidence to support that claim

    • @Finditfixitphilipit
      @Finditfixitphilipit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      pushing the button no matter how many times will not do that . dropping a controller will do that . you say there is nothing connecting the top of the boards together but when you put the controllers back together the screws you put on the handles hold the top of that board together so yet again pushing the button will not break it I guarantee you

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philip Samuels what backs your guarantee? Plenty of documented evidence that pressure on cheap breadboards can cause damage to circuits but you're free to believe whatever you'd like

    • @Finditfixitphilipit
      @Finditfixitphilipit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      what back my evidence is I have the same controller from day one and there is no damage to my board what so ever and believe me I use that button a hell of a lot.

    • @adamruss656
      @adamruss656  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philip Samuels so your evidence is a fallacy of composition? I have controllers from the start that aren't affected either, but that doesn't mean these others haven't been affected. Not everyone applies the same pressure. Just compare the thumbsticks on controllers. Some people have thumbsticks that looks new while others are worn in where they rub the shell. Some Xboxes have faulty thermal sensors in the Kinect causing them to fail prematurely. Some have faulty Wi-Fi boards causing them to lose Wi-Fi connectivity. In no case would I be foolish enough to say that all would suffer from them because some do. Same goes for the reverse
