The black and white video, directed by David Fincher and choreographed by Abdul herself in mid-January 1989, won four 1989 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Editing, Best Choreography, and the first Best Dance Video. The video features an appearance by her friend, comedian Arsenio Hall, whose popular talk show had premiered a few weeks prior to the video shoot. Djimon Hounsou also appears.
This video was so ahead of it’s time! 🫶🏾So new and innovative. I remember being a kid seeing this and being obsessed. Paula Abdul was pure fire caught on video.❤️🔥What a talent she is. And the “David” that directed this music video in 1989 is in fact David Fincher in his early years before he rose to fame with Se7en! Cameos by Arsenio Hall and Djimon Hounsou. So many stars on the rise in this video. Pure fire! ❤️🔥
No it wouldnt lmao. Dont get me wrong this song is godlike and I think it SHOULD be #1 but theres no way in hell it actually would get #1. Have you heard todays music? Kids/Teens are too used to their Billiard Ireland's and Nicki Minaj's. Sure they might like it, but it being #1 would probably be impossible
She is an amazing dancer!! My husband said he went to school with her. She is extremely talented and gave me so much inspiration to dance. Thanks Ms Abdul 4:07
Paula Abdul has more talent in her pinky than most have their entire body. Not just a pretty face, although she is beautiful. Could sing, dance, and also had substance to her music. True legend.
I swear this woman is so underrated!!! One of the most gifted dancers and choreographers of all time! People swear these girl performers today can dance but none like this lady!
She was from an era of professional dancers/choreographers who became pop stars, first was toni basil, then Madonna(who Paula worked with), then Paula herself and finally Jennifer Lopez. All used their dancing to break into the music scene, well J-lo needed a movie to get it going.

@@moomahchaloopa3164 maybe she is a vampire !
So you were there when this song came out how old were you back then
Whoever shot this video in black & white is a legend , absolutely love this song even all these years later 🥰
I wonder if Mark Walberg’s Good Vibrations video was the same producer.
Pure fire! ❤️🔥
Omg that was them!?
Damn, Paula was beautiful in this video. Plus she choreographed all of her own moves. Beautiful woman!
Paula Abdul was 1 of the most gorgeous women of the 80's, I don't care what anybody says..
totally agree! still is
I honestly believe that everyone would agree with you. 🌹
100%
O, that wasn't a revelation. That was just a FACT 😍🔥
2024.always
One of the most awesome videos of all time , I appreciate the beauty of the performance, Paula you are and forever will be awesome 👏
The Straight Up video won 4 VMAs in 89
• Best Female Video
• Best Dance Video
• Best Choreography
• Best Editing
And best body!!
and rightfully so!
No surprise there.
Whitney houston said she can't sing, she's off key
@@antimatterwave3747 She can't. This is still a awesome song though.
if released today, this would be number 1.
still listening in 2020
No it wouldnt lmao.
Yesssssss
Yeah even J. Cole Only got it up to the number 13 spot on the Billboard Top 100 with this sample.
Breaking Rick, she was a hit.
Mmm
There is nothing like the videos that were created in the 80’s! We will never see a style or a sense of fresh clean fun-ness like that again!
É verdade!
She is an amazing dancer!! My husband said he went to school with her. She is extremely talented and gave me so much inspiration to dance. Thanks Ms Abdul 4:07
This is my favourite song of Paula’s. My favourite video is Opposites Attract. Love that tune too!! Bring back the 80’s!!!😍❤️
Flutterby 84 listen to the cover of Straight Up by the band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Flutterby 84 opposites attract is the BEST!!! I loved that video
Singing along whilst having a duvet day still sounds as good as it did 😍
I could have sworn this was a 90s song. Nope, it's 80s. I'm an 80s man. :)
Flutterby 84 I like " cold hearted 🐍 " the best.
Hard to believe this song is 31years old.....Paula is a living legend!!!
Legend? LMFAO... You people want to call everyone a legend... 30 years from now everyone will claim the "catch me outside" girl was a legend.
It makes me feel old
@@chaseholstein7083 2 each it's own Bro....have a good year
Zed Tinsley it’s funny cuz 30 years from now iggy azalea or cardi b are gonna considered legends
I feel attacked
If TH-cam was around in the 80's this video would have billions of views
Trillions maybe!!!!
It's better to sell CDs and records in the 80s than crummy TH-cam views today lol. Means more $.
No need because at the time there was a thing called MTV that did nothing but play music videos:)
Sorry BORING. YIKES.
I remember when this song was played on MTV all the time. Ahhhhhh, the sounds of my childhood! 😉💚
ONE OF. MOST ICONIC MUSIC VIDEOS OF ALL TIME
The Choreography and Song are just MAGNIFICENT!
Paula Abdul has more talent in her pinky than most have their entire body.
Not just a pretty face, although she is beautiful. Could sing, dance, and also had substance to her music. True legend.
her choreography was second to none👯
That tap dance intro was str8 fuckin 🔥
Most definitely.!!!
You know she didn't write this song?
@burnsiet doesn't change my opinion one bit
I swear this woman is so underrated!!! One of the most gifted dancers and choreographers of all time! People swear these girl performers today can dance but none like this lady!
She was from an era of professional dancers/choreographers who became pop stars, first was toni basil, then Madonna(who Paula worked with), then Paula herself and finally Jennifer Lopez. All used their dancing to break into the music scene, well J-lo needed a movie to get it going.
@ LaMescia Montoryas exactly!
She taught Janet Jackson how to dance and choreographed a lot of her videos. Paula even appears in "Nasty Boys" as one of Janet's friends.
Paula is an amazing person! Check out our latest interview with Paula where she reveals surviving Lupus due to her dancing injuries. th-cam.com/video/OAk1yyKdL14/w-d-xo.html
Hi
One of the best songs ever.
Wow!!!WoW!!!Wow!!! Pure talent... I always adore you Paula...You are very remarkable...You should revive this...make new albums too, you are very relatable...You are awesome!!!
We could only wish that she could push acts like Cardi B and Beyonce out of music. But the labels can make too much money from these women who get up on stage looking like $2 hookers whose only real talent is that they can follow choreography that someone else made up.
I agree!!!
Unless you were around you’d have no idea how big this track was
It was epic!
Exactly!
Wasn’t around and I know how big this is, culture run deep in my family
Paula is a legend
As a kid I always waited for this shit to come on the radio..... dope track
80's the way to go!!!! Will never beat it ❣️
When I was a kid this was the shit! 🔥 She was also one of my many 80's crushes. So much nostalgia in this video, i was like 7 when this was released 🥹
The eighties were the best era for music❣ Best memories of my life were in my twenties.... Love watching old videos and reminiscing favorite pastime ever🥰⚘❣
I prefer the 90s. But this is somwehere in between I guess
The 80’s were such a great decade for music.
The most unique. My song folder has no other music genre than the 80s!
Yes it was I can totally agree
@@Ghostxfied ok then bud

@Dee Dokken I was an 80s teen and I agree. Also, the year 2000 was pretty lit when it came to music.
Paula Abdul The Queen of Tap Dance !!!
Paula Abdul still doing this today @ 56.... Amazing !!!
56 ???? Is not old . I'm 52 and I destroy newbies at my job . GO see The Rolling stones and The Who . ( Roger and Pete , still alive )
BRUTUSPLAC what job? 🤔
Fifty-six... or "Fifty-FINE"? EH? YEAH??
All the artists i grew up with are either getting old or dead sad this is when real music was still being made....makes me fell old im 40.

@@CrazyDoodEpicLeaves I listen to Soul music or R&B ,sometimes Rock
Paula was one of the best dancers back then and also she was a backup dancer and choreographer for Janet Jackson.
She is one sexy Mutha f*ckn woman.
And LA Laker cheerleader.
Always was there and always will be, love You Paula❤
80s songs never get old...and this song will live forever..
When Paula Abdul took ownership of MTV. Wow the nostalgia, I remember it Paula,Janet,Michael and Madonna were in constant rotation. The best choreography category at the VMAs was a big deal.i miss those days.
✊🏼💜💃🏻💫
Seems like times are so much crazier now. Think back to the mid 80s to early 90s and I wish I would have appreciated life more.
I miss the days when Mtv actually played music videos. I watched the very first broadcast of Mtv and stopped watching when they started those unreality shows.
I can dance just like Paula she my mentor
And Whitney Houston and Prince as well
This is my fave 80’s song. It’s empowering and fun to dance to
I CANT BELIEVE UNTIL NOW that I thought this song was done by Madonna!!! hahaha SMH... I am only 33, but I grew up on 80s music due to my older sisters.. Which in turn made the "80s' like my favorite decade genre of music... So i have always knda pride myself on knowing songs and artists of that period. So it is utter shock that I thought this was a Madonna song til tonight?!?!? crazy. lol
Not to mention great to listen to in the car.
Str8 Up!!!

I'm barely older than you, and I grew up hearing this song.
She was a headliner for most of my early years.
Iconic classic.. i loved this song ❤❤❤
Love her distinctive vocals. Even if you don't know the track, you know who the artist is. Hard to say the same with most these days.
And don't even get me start with her beauty and dance floor prowess...
+Ultra80s LOL WHAT. i don't find her voice to be distinctive at all, in fact she is not even singing she is just talking. this woman is a dancer not a singer
I still love this song.
Ian Alexander)
The beauty of the voice of this great Singer Is extraordinary
Lost in a dream
I don't know which way to go
(A-let me say it now)
If you are all that you seem
Then, baby, I'm movin' way too slow
[Pre-Chorus]
I've been a fool before
Wouldn't like to get my love caught
In the slammin' door
How about some information, please?
[Chorus]
Straight up now, tell me
Do you really wanna love me forever (oh, oh, oh)
Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
Straight up now, tell me
Is it gonna be you and me together (oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just havin' fun?
[Verse 2]
Time's standing still
Waiting for some small clue
(A-let me tell ya now)
I keep getting chills
When I think your love is true
[Pre-Chorus]
I've been a fool before
Wouldn't like to get my love caught
In the slammin' door
How about some information, please?
[Chorus]
Straight up now, tell me
Do you really wanna love me forever (oh, oh, oh)
Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
Straight up now, tell me
Is it gonna be you and me together (oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just havin' fun?
[Bridge]
You are so hard to read
You play hide-and-seek
With your true intentions
If you're only playin' games
I'll just have to say
Abb-b-b-bye, b-b-b-bye
[Breakdown]
Do, do you love me?
(Do, do you love me, baby?)
Do, do you love me?
(Do, do you love me? A-hey, baby!)
Do, do you love me?
(Do, do you love me, baby?)
C'mon now, do, do you love me?
(Do, do you love me?)
A-tell me, baby
[Pre-Chorus - Extended]
I've been a fool before
Wouldn't like to get my love
Caught in the slammin' door
Are you more than hot for me
Or am I a page in your history book?
I don't mean to make demands
But the word and the deed go hand in hand
How about some information, please?
[Chorus]
Straight up now, tell me
Do you really wanna love me forever (oh, oh, oh)
Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
Straight up now, tell me
Is it gonna be you and me together (oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just havin' fun?
