Lyrics:
Papa, I know you're going to be upset
'Cause I was always your little girl
But you should know by now, I'm not a baby
You always taught me right from wrong
I need your help, daddy, please be strong
I may be young at heart, but I know what I'm saying
The one you warned me all about
The one you said I could do without
We're in an awful mess
And I don't mean maybe
Please
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble, deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind
I'm keeping my baby
Ooh, I'm gonna keep my baby, mmm
He says that he's going to marry me
We can raise a little family
Maybe we'll be all right
It's a sacrifice
But my friends keep telling me to give it up
Saying I'm too young, I ought to live it up
What I need right now is some good advice
Please
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble, deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind
I'm keeping my baby
Ooh, I'm gonna keep my baby, aah, ooh
Daddy, daddy, if you could only see
Just how good he's been treating me
You'd give us your blessing right now
'Cause we are in love
We are in love
So please
Daddy, daddy
Daddy, daddy
Daddy, daddy, if you could only see
Just how good he's been treating me
You'd give us your blessing right now
'Cause we are in love
We are in love
So please
Papa don't preach
Papa don't preach
Papa don't preach
Papa don't preach
Papa don't preach
Papa don't preach
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble, deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind
I'm keeping my baby
Ooh, I'm gonna keep my baby
Papa don't preach
Don't you stop loving me, daddy
I know I'm gonna keep my baby, ooh

As a 13 year old in 1986, I remember how controversial this song was. I still think it is one of Madonna’s best songs. Bring back the 80s!
I was 13 in 1986, too. I remember the exact moment a friend of mine came over and said "have you already heard Madonna's new song?" Turned out that new song was Papa don't preach. I also miss the 80s.
@@Srum31 wow y'all 50 now I was 6 I remember listening to it on the radio
Why the fuck was this controversial
@@bye3568 because the song was about teen pregnancy, which really wasn’t discussed like it is today.
No Please don’t bring the 80s back
this song came out at a time when a lot of girls during the 80s/90s were getting pregnant; i was one of them; my parents weren't happy but they supported me and helped me raise my son. she's iconic and a legend to me.
Beautiful . Blessings to you and your family.

the outfit, the story, the controversy, the looks, her vocals, the beat, the choreography, everything about this video is the definition of *iconic*

What controversy?
A pro-abortion song in an era where abortion was seen as an uncontroversial medical procedure by the majority of the population.
_"But she keeps it, it is pro-natalist?"_
Nope. Negation/reverse psychology is being employed here. The song is all about how having a child is barely seen as an option today will destroy a woman's life.
Very very cleverly subversive song.
Bc she is iconic

It's impossible to overstate the significance and importance of this song and video, even today. I am surprised you listened to Madonna in your late 30s/early 40s. My older brother and his friends were in their late 20s and they didn't care for her or most 80s pop. I was 17-18, so I was pretty much the target audience.

As a young kid who listened to a lot of rap music, I used to dance to this song all the time at home.

When I was 16 shortly after finding out I was pregnant I stood in the backyard pondering life stressed about telling my family and this song came on my mp3 player. I start singing and dancing to it passionately, and as I start crying partway through the song it starts raining (in Arizona!). For some reason even though I felt so alone, I looked deep within myself and saw the strength to raise a child with all the love in my heart better than the mother I feared raised me. Now he's an almost 8 year old GENIUS and I couldn't be any more in love with him and his 2 siblings to whom he is the BEST big brother I have ever known. Thanks for the help, Madonna :)

RIP Danny Aiello. This video is the 1st thing I thought about when I heard of his passing. He will be missed.
Me too
Same. He was one of my favorite actors.
51 years OLD now and this is still my all time favorite Madonna video. I still tear up at the father-daughter scenes. Love her choreography as well. ❤️
The true queen of the 80’s.
Wow
And 90's
@@imb5128 Madonna definitely wasn’t topping the Charts like she did in the 80s especially when Janet, Whitney and especially Mariah was dominating the charts. Doesn’t take away from that fact that Madonna was still making hits in the 90s and was still Influential but the 90s was dominated by Mariah,Janet and Whitney. But all 4 woman including Madonna carried the 90s.
Madonna d best

I remember playing this continually when I was sixteen. Where have the years gone?
Right!
This video is SO emotional. Madonna did a great job + when I see the Twin Towers my heart aches and I start to have goosebumps everywhere in my body, it's insane.

Madonna doesn’t get enough recognition for everything she achieved in pop music. This song should have a billion or more views.
Shes so talented especially looking in hindsight with what we settle for these days
Most Madonna songs were blocked in many Countries, that's why view numbers are less.
Actually she is well respected in the industry, many of today’s artists such as Lady Gaga attribute Madonna as their inspiration (despite the fake feud they had)
Agree!...She changed a lot of things & stigmas and was not afraid, Love Her & Respect, mind you, I'm against Today's feminism Movement, Go Figure!
Madonna deserves to be acknowledged way much more for her artistry and originality. However she still has the best achievements for a female artist, she conquered every field (sales, tours, hits).
Madonna, the 👑. This song is fresh even today. Who’s listening with me in March 2021?
Yes Madonna ..Queen
Healing music
Yeeesss
I'm here in March 2021 also
Yeah!
This is an iconic 80’s song. Love it!
When I was young I used to listen to this song and since I'm Italian I had no idea what the theme was. My mother was a huge Madonna fan. This week I found her album and played it and I was shocked when I heard the lyrics and understood them.
It was like hearing it for the first time. Very strange experience.
Certain songs can only be fully tasted after listeners became old. Guess it is what is called growing up - abstract concepts finally being understood because our own personal life experiences has finally reach theirs (the artists).
@@KelenYoru he just understand English now. Its not about growing up

I honestly don't know what people see in newer pop music, this stuff is light-years beyond most anything today in terms of quality.
+Mr. Extreme Todays music sucks...the 80's were the golden years for pop music.

Madonna is at her most natural in music videos. She can act.
She's able to convey what's going on without words is the mark of a good actress as in Papa Don't Preach and Bad Girl.
@ Gina, exactly. Hollywood saw her as a triple threat. That is why they always criticized her no matter what she did. To me, her videos are some forms of movies entirely on their own. The fact that she conveys what is going on in a short video, is the proof of her acting abilities.

@@saadsaud55With Madonna, you need to use your brain a bit more to appreciate her artistry. Shows how incredibly stupid most people are - that they actually need a long period of time to realize "Madonna is great". She's way too ahead of everyone else. Not catered for the low-IQ ones. It's easier to be impressed by Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston, because court jesters are more entertaining.

Madonna at her peak!
"At that time (mid 1980s), Madonna was widely known as the “Queen of Reinvention,” because for almost every new song, album cover, video, etc, she presented herself in a completely new or different way." - Photographer, director and creative director Matthew Rolston in 2018
Rolston used to be our neighbor. Very eccentric, delicate little fellow. Incredibly talented. HIs partner of many years, Ted Russell, was a good guy.
And David Bowie must have been the King of it in the 70s.
