- Red was my 5 and a half year old African Cichlid "red devil". I bought him when he was less than an inch long. Upon his death early Saturday Morning at 2:30am EST on August 22, 2009 he was 12 and a half inches long and 6 and a half inches tall. Red was hand fed all his life and loved to be petted. I had him for a little over 5 years. This morning at 11:00am EST I commited his body into Lake Hickory behind our home. I'm gonna miss him!

You seem to be an awesome owner, and your compassion in his final moments is very touching. So it's a little bit confusing to see him in such a small tank. I know money doesn't grow on trees, but the tank should have been upgraded well before he got to be this size.

LIWANAGDILLLIM yah when I used to keep fish I had a few small tanks for if one had to be separated for any reason, typically because they were sick and needed to be quarantined. He likely had a much larger tank to live in and was put in this one once he started to get ill.

What makes this even sadder, and I read the comments at the bottom, is that people who had pets soooooooooo long and they die, it's touching. I mean I have gold fish and they lived for 8 years, I am working on getting my 3-4 year old fish to even live that long! But long story short, those comments that say get another one, you have a kid for 18 years and they die........GET ANOTHER ONE! Nature is life but life will always be married to death and that is the saddest thing in the world. RIP to all life!
P.s I know it may sound cheesy but it's the truth. I hate when a pet or human dies I knew for years.

When given proper care. Goldfish can live up to 20 years. And grow up to nine inches.
There was one recorded at 43 years old.

Lol. Its a hospital/quarantine tank. All you people attacking him for the tank, its CLEARLY a hospital. I handle my fish often, especially my breeders. I doubt he rubbed off all of the slime coat in such a short time. Also considering he was moving the fish around in the water trying to aid in pushing water over the gills shows he was actively trying to heal the fish. Also the way he was petting him shows he had a long relationship and had affection for him. Sorry for the loss, time to growout a new one

That's why I don't ever plan on having a pet because it's very painful when you lose them...
The amount of happy times and memories you'll have with any pet with be worth a million fold more than the pain you'll feel when you lose them.

+iHeavenlyKing Warframe Ive had to put two dogs down so far, they were about 15 and id had them since age 12. When you feed, walk, play with and love a friend and companion like a dog theres no doubt about it, its hard as hell to let them go. But you take solace in the fact that you treated them well and gave them a good life, a life they might not have had with a bad owner, or worse, no life at all because they get euthanized when nobody wants them. The amount of companionship and good times you get from a good relationship with a dog outweighs the pain and time to heal that it takes when you have to let them go. In my eyes the important part of it is knowing when to accept that they are about to go and giving them the relief of a quick and painless passing with euthanasia. The main shot they get slows their breathing until they go to sleep and then pass and the other optional shot sedates them almost instantly and makes them totally unaware of whats going on, even the small pain and discomfort of the second shot. You ALWAYS choose to get the optional sedation shot, your trusted companion deserves no less then every possible comfort.
But it's very great to have one. :)

To every amateur or experienced aquarist reading this: Please try not to dispose of non native plants and animals in the wild. Even a dead fish can carry diseases and parasites, introduction of which can be catastrophic. A dead plant can carry seeds that can sprout and take over a whole ecosystem.
Damn those tears. A friend is a friend, no matter who or what it is.

all of us here will die because we can't live forever and we die with our love ones like my dog max I grow up with him since I was 2 and when I tune 11 he started staying on the same spot the next day he fall asleep in peace and I cried for 1 month but a man's best friend will always be with you so enjoy life with the one you love because life could be very long or very short💖

I'm so sorry for your loss. It must be hard to read all the comments by the people that don't understand he was in a quarantine tank and that you probably gave it your all to try to help him pull through. Most people don't understand how much personality large Cichlids have. I keep Discus and it is absolutely devastating when one of my little guys doesn't make it. I'm just as emotionally bonded to my Discus as I am to our two family dogs. It's nice that you were able to be there for Red when he passed.

Although I may have been closer with my rat Ripred every death hurt about the same. The pain of losing any pet and remembering the times you spent with it is the worst after it is gone. I still cry every night for my lost babies and it will never leave me that's what people have to understand. It doesn't matter what it is it's someone's pet and friend.

You can tell he loved you very much. And you obviously loved him as well. Cichlids can be very very friendly fish, and make awesome pets, a video on my channel shows a yellow lab cichlid that loves to be petted just like this guy. Very beautiful, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for the loss of your pet fish, or better yet best friend, with only going 1 minute and 8 seconds in the video i could tell with each pat on the fish he/she truly enjoyed your gentle touch as you gave it loving. I've seen people pat their dogs and cats, birds and other animals but never have i seen a person pat a fish. As i've said i am truly sorry for what had been brought upon this best pal of yours, I hope it goes to a good warm but free swimming place, with lots an other fish.

I was crying the whole time. I had this experience once, when my favorite betta fish, Apollo, died. He was an amazing fish, swam up to say hi every time I came up to his tank. In his last moments I stayed with him. He was my little Buddie. Apollo. and rest in peace red

My favorite goldfish got Swim bladder,Then constipated,then fin rot,then got swim bladder AND fin rot at the same time,after that got ich,then came back with constipation,had fin rot again,and then got ich once more all in less than a month before he died.I had to give him three treatments a day plus small peas to avoid constipation again :(

It says in the description that he liked being petted in life. These fish are pretty aggressive and even in its weakened state, I think it would have snapped at "Dad" if the attention was unwanted.

I doubt he liked being "patted". Fish aren't dogs or cats they don't like being touched. Nor is it healthy for their slime coat. The poor guy was traumatized on his death bed.

It probably lived in their house as a family pet for about 6-7 years

God bless your heart. My dad had a little Capuchin monkey he was given when she was 5 days old back in the early '60's. Dad was injured in Korea and was in a wheelchair when a friend of his who worked at the zoo came to visit day with a 5 day old little monkey. The monkeys mother had given birth to twins but didn't want the second one so when the mother threw the 2nd one against a stone wall knocking her out cold. The zoo was going to put the little one down as no one wanted her. This was in the '60's before there were animal rights groups etc., and they didn't need any more of this common breed of monkey so the answer was put her down. My dad took one look at her and it was love for the next 29 years. When my dad passed away I took her under my wing as she was pining so badly for dad we thought she would pine to death. She stopped eating and would sit and clutch her little blanket all day. It broke my heart so I started to take her everywhere with me. I gained a wonderful companion for the next 13 years. She passed away at the age of 42 yrs and I was devastated. My husband did something then which he never does. He went out and got me a little 15 day old Grivet Monkey who is now my constant companion. She is a seizure monkey as well as I developed a seizure disorder and surprised us all when we learned she could detect my seizures VERY ACCURATELY about 5 - 10 min before they happen. I have a defibrillator and a pacemaker installed in my chest and a monkey alarm.
I know how hard it is to lose an animal you've been with for a long time but I learned from experience that if you do get another, it is not a replacement as no one can ever REPLACE the one you loved and lost. They can however be succeeded. I got a different breed the second time to underline that even more. It will probably do you good to get another fish of similar size but different from the one you had so you can see the new one as his/her own unique little individual.

Seriously, this hit home for me. When my cat Weasel succumbed to feline leukemia, I held him as he passed. When my mother lost the fight with pancreatic cancer, I put her little wooden cross in her right hand and held her left hand, stroking her hair as she breathed her last breath (I'm not even Christian, but she was, and I respected that dear woman enough to make sure she had the symbol of her faith close at hand in her final moments), telling her that it was ok to move on to the next life, that she didn't need to hurt anymore....
Seeing that same sense of empathy and compassion for that beautiful fish.. It gives me a little hope for humanity, even as it breaks my heart. This is beautiful. 💜

Ohhh man. I've ggot one that is about 12" long too, and he's 3 years old. This video made me cry. I know its a while back now but that musta really sucked. He had you there right to the end. That was nice and sweet of you. I lost a female anout 6 months ago cause my boy got bigger than her and attacked her til it was kinder to take her out. She went much the same way Red did there in the bottome, but she was in the net, in the water, away from him and just went. i think she knew. It depends on the fish. You can train a fish to like anything. My experience is that hand fed fish actually like being pet. I had a very large Oscar that was hand fed all of his food and he loved all kinds of interaction, especially being pet (because he knew he would immediately receive treats after that).
they don't like it, you just train them to make you feel like it like being pet. they are fish, remember, not a dog or a cat ...
