Can't be fixed for profit in the USA. Car's ending up in Central\East Europe. The mechanic fixing it will make a buck. The seller will make a buck. The officials registering the car will make a BIG buck. And the gangster buying it for cheap, even knowing the history of the car (otherwise the seller would get severely beaten), would be happy to pretend he's someone when driving this exotic it front of poor commoners eyes. The repairs would not be OEM standards though . I've already found 4 airbags - driver, passanger and 2 side-brand new for 170000 lek. This is like 1500$..Seat back cover - 500$. Whole bumper OEM with screws, clips, plastics - 1800$...Reinforcement - 200$.. After all , just a fancy Audi q8..Sounds good , but imagine rebuilding a wrecked C8 corvette in Europe..That will be...fun...

Please take an "attaboy" for this video. I started rebuilding "totals" way back in the '50's and learned from the ways/means that is to say this is nothing new. Our stash of '55 thru '57 Chevy parts were often "recycled". I have been away from this for many years but the game is the same. Thanks for an excellent expose'. good luck with your trade.

  • @electronicstzar

Wow I actually saw this listing before this video, saw the air bag, and said the front does not look too bad, never caught the gun shots, the passenger airbag, side bags and everything hidden behind the fake pristine bumper. Even if the car was as good as it looks like in the second auction you would have approx 80K in parts and labor. If you had the auction price of 150K+80 that puts you at 230K. By the time you fix this up the price of a used one in pristine condition might end up being the same price. 2021s used are 300K now but used inventories are piling up and might touch the lower 200's in a year or so. Interior parts like air bags, window regulators, wiring harness are not too bad because they are all shared with Audi but the Lambo specific body panels, seats (inside and out) are probably impossible to get right now.

not only sellers doctoring up vehicles, copart themselves are guilty of that. I don't follow Cleetus MacFarland any more but I saw a trackhawk that copart had doctored for the photo in one of the videos. He was interested in buying it and was close so he went and checked it out in person....looked great in the photos but they'd taped in place a left front fender, hood, front grill, and jacked it up and put a block underneath it so it sat level (or something like that).

      @Bill_N_ATX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you are an older Cleetus watcher, you might remember when he bought Ruby, an older wrecked Corvette. He bought that one at a “cheap price” only to find out some one had swapped out the Corvette motor for a very used old truck motor. If all he’d wanted was the basis for a race car, knew he was going to have to put in a new motor, and paid accordingly, it might have been a good deal. As it was, he got screwed.
I think the experience might have taught him his lesson, thus he went and examined the SUV before buying it.

Honestly this is not really a scam as it is listed on IAA because you are not required to disclose information like this when selling through salvage auction. And if some unfortunate buyer buys this car without knowing, that is on them. By placing a bid they are agreeing upon the terms of service of IAA which clearly state vehicles are sold as is where is. Now if these people are actually listing these cars as a dealer elsewhere (like there website) and not disclosing everything that has been done up until that point, then they are breaking the law and need to be reported so they can have there dealer license revoked.

Wouldn't the insurance company that determined this vehicle as a total loss, tell DMV its determination before sending it to auction? Secondly, if this vehicle did get repaired, would the CARFAX help potential buyers determine that major structural repairs were done to this vehicle before it went through an auction? Finally, are scams like this vehicle more prevalent with more 'exotic' vehicle like Italian and German Cars, or do you see scams like these with more common cars like a Toyota Camry or Honda CR-V?

    Dear Vehcor,
I guess I'm one of the contrarians who would like to propose that you stick with what you are really good at-rebuilding salvage vehicles. There are others out in TH-camland doing similar auction analyses and I don't necessarily believe that they're doing a better job (your acerbic and critical comments drive this video, as they do the rebuild ones) but they're out there for those looking for information like this.
I think you are much to self deprecating regarding your skills and knowledge, although I'm also one who I think can recognize sarcasm and irony. Your most recent Grand Am rebuild drove this point home on a number of levels.
    1. You have a carefully researched target market. Pickup trucks are a given right now, but choosing Grand Ams? You've determined that it is a good niche market. People need dependable "beater work cars" for themselves and/or for their children and family members. Cars have to be cheap and could be older, but must be reliable. Good looks are an added plus.
    2. You've done enough of these cars where, face it, you're good at it. I'm always amazed at the little nuances that you reveal during your rebuilds that avoid huge amounts of work or damage parts in the process. You make it look easy. I'm smart enough to know it ain't and don't try to pretend otherwise.
    3. You tailor the end product for the end customer. OK-so the panels may have a paint "discontinuity." Give the Customer the choice, or make a knowledgeable guess and then price it accordingly. The Painting Gnome is extremely talented and he has to make a decent living as well. Time is money. I consider a car where all the panels are the same color (more or less) to be a cosmetic win.
    4. With today's supply chain breakdowns and interruptions, one of the clear keys to your cost control is in addition to a select availability of onhand parts (which you've developed and perfected over years of work and experience,) you know "where to go to get what you need and what a fair price is." This is an invaluable skill and resource that you likely draw upon frequently.
    5. "Sometimes you get the bear, some times the bear gets you." There's an inherent risk in what you do.
'Nuff said (and typed.) I enjoy watching your videos and although I've learned some "neat tricks," like how to repair and restore a fog light on my minivan knocked out by "aggressively challenging a snowbank," I'm clearly not going to do what you do. But you do it and skillfully enough to where you can turn a buck doing it. And I'm too glad to watc

10:50 you can see the estimate repair costs and estimated value, with a difference of $65000. You need to allow a margin/costs etc so max bid should be way under that, your's of 25k gives you 40k to work with, which isn't unreasonable given the scale of the work / task of getting parts. They paid way way to much

My background is in Autobody as well as my friends, one is a shop owner, maybe 25 years ago he bought a doctored Cadillac Escalade that was previously hit bad, they fixed it up just enough, still auctioning as a lightly hit truck. He fixed everything, and eventually drove it everyday.

Really interesting to watch to see what you evaluate as you examine the pictures, as well as the potential damage you can't see. Would watch more of these if you make them. Only downside--no gnomes, no bumper installation tool used, none of the special torque wrenches :). Thanks for posting! I enjoy watching your rebuilds

Hey Scott......I use a third party website that has past sales info. I pay 15 bucks a month and for the most part it gives me the info I'm looking for. I'm small potatoes having only four cars under my belt. It would be wrong of me to mention them on someone else's channel so I will just ask you where you get your previous sales data from? Maybe it's better than where I get my info.....or maybe it's the same. Thanks!

Miami, LA, NY auctions are the ones to avoid at all cost. Miami bit me twice, 1st I bought a vw jetta that looked like minor damage but there was clearcoat damage on the roof and after taking stuff apart, the car was cut in half and welded together. This time I learned my lesson, I purchase a hayabusa motorcycle from jacksonville, I win the bid, go to pick up the bike and the whole bike is stripped down to bare frame and engine. Turns out the auction sent the bike from miami to jacksonville, and they suspect the tow truck driver stripped the bike down on the way.

Just don't buy a car that you can't inspect yourself, or have someone you know look at it! Or there is enough parts in it to still make money, here in new Zealand, all totalled cars that are repaired MUST go through a damaged vehicle inspection PRIOR to any repairs being done, after that you get a list of repairs that need to be done, with a list of body shops graded A or B that are required to do repairs, in more serious impacts ( like a full length Armco rub) they may also a 3d scan, there is a second inspection after repairs are done but before painting, then a final inspection when the vehicle is finished, the total costs for this is around $500, then the vehicle goes through a full vehicle revin check and registration process, another $800, all that on top of repair cost, on the upside the repaired vehicle is virtually up to new standard, however "you cannot revin a flood damaged car in any way unless you replace the entire electrical system with "new" parts with a dealer paper trail) this process has been inforce for 15 years because there were too many dodgy cowboys in the trade, I have never had trouble selling rebuilds done trough this process with a 30 to 45% margin

We had threaten them with a lawsuit to get them to correct their report.

Guys like this ruin the business and put a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I'd love for you to do another. P.s. I bought a 2011 Subaru Legacy with 41k, couldn't see much damage, fender, hood, rad core support. Well you guessed it, both rails were kinked. They heated and popped bumper back out and bolted it up. Just ridiculous!

I just rebuilt a 2017 chevy cruze and had clean title and yes it had blown air bags and some damages but everything got replaced and fixed just like new! Even new car dealerships get cars damaged on transport or while driving them aroun and guess what, they fix them and they will not tell you, and there are services that fix paint scratches chips and even interior work such as door panel scratches, steering wheel scratches and they fix them and gets sold as new or as a certified preowned which is nothing different than a rebuilt or reconditioned salvage car but yes its a matter of being honest to decide which cars should be fixed and which to part out.

There are a lot of dodgy mofo's out there in the vehicle selling/repair industry.
And you can easily get burned if you don't know what you're looking for, so it's best to hire a pro or someone with experience to check it out first before you buy, it'll save you a ton of money and headache.

Should be illegal to rip people off like this. They should implement a policy where you can return no questions asked, kind of like ebay. That would put the onus on sellers to be honest and the auction house to enforce this for better quality. Also the original sale should be linked to the third party sale, simply by linking the vins. This would prevent unsuspecting buyers to be duped into doing this and also expose the seller for shadyness.
