  • Lately, Mikko has been experiencing heightened sensitivities. Hair wash day has always been a challenge, but now that she's more sensitive it makes it that much more difficult. We continue to be there for her in those times to help her navigate her experiences in an attempt to overcome them.

When dad came over and she stops crying. I still call my dad when I have a meltdown. The sound of his voice makes everything feel better. You also notice when he holds her hand he doesn’t grab it. He holds it up as an invitation for her to hold it if she would like. Sudden sensory input might upset autistic people especially in times of stress so it’s important that she signals she wants that sensory input. I really appreciate seeing that

@briana1345 that’s a good question. A lot of things autistic people do neurotypical people do too to a lesser extent, like stimming for example. A meltdown is when your senses become completely overwhelmed and your brain can’t handle it. I’ve never seen a neurotypical person have one but maybe if there was enough stimulus they would

From my observations it seems to be less upsetting for Mikko when you brush and style her hair on a "typical" styling day. If that's the case, it will be 95% less challenging to detangle her hair if you brush it and put it into 5-8 large loose braids and then wash it while it's still in the braids. Let it air dry while it's braided. Then open and ¡viola! Tangle free, clean hair. It's saved me from so much stress and anxiety on my hair days.

Is there a law against cutting children's hair shorter so it's not so difficult to keep up with and axiety producing? I would be so uncomfortable under all of that hair, beautiful as it is. Leave a long section for her to stim with. I think you are making your own lives more difficult. If she made the choice, what would SHE choose?

@@abathome7721 well to address your comment. I keep my hair slightly longer bc I don’t care for the way short hair looks on me. I deal with hair wash day bc it’s necessary. As far as Miko’s parents I believe in a previous video her mother said they want her to learn to deal with everyday things like having her hair washed and detangled. And also that being autistic doesn’t automatically make you exempt from certain things. Again, I believe that’s what she said but I could be wrong.

I feel for little Mikko. I'm neurotypical but I hated getting my hair done in any capacity as a small child. The jerking movements, the tension on my scalp, the detangling etc. Plus I was/am tender-headed. So I can imagine it must be that much more difficult for a child with ASD.

I‘m autistic and I‘m also incredibly sensitive to noise! Now that I‘m older I wear earphones all the time. It’s not just that your ears are sensitive it’s that your brain can’t filter out the noise so you‘re always aware of everything around you.
Shower heads are incredibly loud and bathrooms have an ugly acoustic because of the tiles. You’re incredible at recognizing your daughter’s needs and she seems to like being held. Does she also like being wrapped up like a burrito in a blanket? If she likes it Keeping her wrapped up in a towel that has the right level of softness for her and moving washing times to a quiet time of the day might be helpful.
For me my dog keeps me calm as well. Because I can’t filter out sounds I always hear his breathing and that makes me aware of his calming presence and the fact that I‘m not alone in a sea impressions hurting me 24/7.
it’s tedious work finding out what overstimulates ud but avoiding overstimulation altogether has seriously improved my quality of life so much. Meltdowns rarely occur, maybe 3 times a year. I can be a lot more active member of society because I don’t have to recover all the time from being driven towards the edge. It’s nice.

OMG the Army base makes SO MUCH SENSE for her panicking the way she was at the window. I'm so glad that you guys were able to find out what was scaring her. I hope as she gets older she realizes she's gonna be ok but its still ok to get scared. Just a thought, if you and your husband are allowed/able to, see if you can take Mikko to the base ( not go on base but are able to drive past it) on a day they aren't so busy so she can see where the noise is coming from? I know you said she grew up on it but I wonder if she doesn't connect the noise to the base because she was so young. I know some kids feel better after finding and understanding the source of what is scaring them. You guys are doing amazing with her. Have you considered:
    1) Ear plugs for her during hair washing
    2) There is a cone shaped device you could put around her head that prevents water from spashing in her face
    3) putting her hair in sections. Wash and condition each section
    4) Use stretching method when drying her hair.
    5) Mikko definitely needs considerable more product in her hair due to the volume

Also, cutting half of it off to reduce the time it takes to wash detangle and style.
Im sorry, but why keep extra long hair on a special needs child who hates having it done? It could easily be shoulder length and so much easier to manage. She could still stim and life would be just fine.
When my sons hair got too long around age 3 that it became a problem for him, we decided shorter hair would be better even if I loved it long. I had to put my own feelings aside. There is a difference between teaching life skills and making life harder than it has to be for esthetics.

      I agree with more product
      Use 2 in 1 shampoo/wash
Grip hair tighter when detangling Starting at the ends and work up
Put hair in at least 4-6 sections
      Get a shampoo hand brush

My daughter is autistic as well, we all parent differently. Mine hates wash day and when I comb her hair as well. She doesn’t like a lot of things. But it must get done, the more you do it the better they will get. The world does not care that our kids are autistic and they will not be nice to our kids. Therefore, I believe you make them do it anyway. We aren’t gonna be here forever and the world doesn’t revolve around them. A lot of ppl judge my parenting because my daughter likes to hurt her siblings and other ppl when she gets mad. I will give her a spank if need be and guess what? It works! When I’m not here and she goes around hurting ppl what’s gonna happen to her? So do what you feel is best because I sure do. Idc what ppl say my child isn’t gonna end up dead somewhere because of her behaviors. And I don’t trust ABA, because I sent her there and they sent her back to me with scratches because they can’t handle her either really. Mine had severe autism and adhd and she is ALOT to handle. That’s why I parent the way that I do. People are always going to judge. Who cares.

Love you videos! As a stylist Idk what products your using now but I would use design essentials silk shampoo (even tho it’s for silk presses) because it makes the hair LITERALLY like silk and you can detangle with the shampoo. My technique is to always be pulling the hair down and out…like a lil scalp scrub then pull down and out. This will detangle during the entire washing process so the brush out will be quicker and it will only be the knots left you couldn’t finger detangle! My matted clients love this technique because it so much more painless! hopefully this helps make your washdays just a little easier. 💖 love from St. Louis Mo!

Hair washing caused me major anxiety, and sometimes panic, as a child and into my 20s. Now, my child has similar struggles. Just in case it helps, I'll share that for me and my child, the issue was/is fear of getting water in our faces. Even a few drops splashed on the face, or water near my face used to make me feel like I was going to drown. Even though I could reason cognitively that I was safe.
    What's helped us:
    - having a facecloth on the forehead gives a bit of a feeling of safety
    - having some control over one's own head; eg we taught our little one to look up while rinsing, so they get to choose when and for how long
    - control over the water direction (as developmentally appropriate, of course)
    - comfort/minimizing overstimulations of various types. Sometimes playing music helps.
    - regularly scheduled hair washing so that it is routinized to an extent (day of the week and time of day). Little one knows when to expect it. When we washed once a week it was so infrequent that it was like learning a new skill every time, which was hard. Now we wash every Wednesday and Saturday after supper. It's still very tiring but it's more peaceful.
Edited to add: the snuggle time afterward is key for us too! ❤ An important part of the ritual.

Mommy is so patient and gracious with this child❤ Love this… Daddy has the quieting , calmness and security she looks for. Y’all are doing a great job! I have a godson who is autistic. When we have to do major assignments like this, we normally would get some thing, an iPad with a ipen, TH-cam cartoon or his favorite show, and/or something to do with his hands, while I braided his hair. At first, it was hard to teach him how to focus on these things, but once I became more consistent, it helped him along the way.

I would cut her hair, make life easier for the entire family. Baby don't need all that hair, she's a beautiful child. I love your Parenting Team, Partnership in coping with your Earth Angel. I love her. You are on my Prayer List for discernment. You are blessed, be encouarged. I have worked with Blind, Crippled, and many different needs students. Your daughter is such a blessing. May I make a suggestion. Instead of keeping her hair in a ponytail for long periods of time when you wash and detangle her hair put her hair in twists or braids this way her hair is still cute and it won’t get tangled. When you take it out of that puff it’s one big tangled ball. My daughter has hair just like Mikko and she was extremely tender headed . So keeping her hair in several ponytails and not one made wash day as well as touch up day a breeze 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼.

I think that's a good idea too - maybe some simple two strand twists with cute hair ties

    • @latonyanewsome0

It's just wash day period because of the sensory overload. Also braids and twists can still get tangled.

Most children that age don't appreciate wash day, or any hair day! I can only imagine Miko's compounded distress. Maybe you can add a towel into the sink to decrease the sounds. Maybe also add headphones for her with whatever calms her playing. Instead of detangling with rinse out conditioner, maybe a leave in to decrease wash time? How about keeping her hair styled in about 30 twists, wash it while twisted on wash day, then retwist, one by one? You can retwist again mid month. Mikko is a beautiful child and you both are awesome parents.❤

I think you and your husband are amazing patient parents. Children who aren't autistic carry on when they have to get their hair washed as well. You're right, cutting her hair is NOT the solution. If cutting a child's hair was the solution to their anxiety, there would be an awful lot of little girls with very short hair. If what you are doing works for you and your family, keep doing it. I pray that your days get better and Mikko is able to transition through her everyday ordeals smoothly as she gets older. GOD be with you and your family.

Well the few minutes that I did see on the communication video said a lot, then I happened to come across this one, you don't talk to her like her dad does, he's so awesome with verbally communicating with her way more than you, that's why she cried when he stepped away for a second. I don't hear you saying I love you with a smile, or good job big girl. No clapping or anything, not being disrespectful or rude but it's just my opinion about the cold and boring relationship I see you have with her. God bless you and your family 🙏🏼

1:30 I lived in Killeen Tx near Fort Hood. My first time ever being that close to a base. These were some of the MOST STRESSFUL 6months I've ever experienced. And it steamed from the firing and target practice. All Night, All, Day, All Morning! My grown a** was stressing, I can only imagine for the babies! That ish is not normal! Legit felt like I was living in a war zone. I remember the first time it happened for me. I was on my terrance trying to meditate then journal, then bomb like BOOOM, out of nowhere......... SHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH!!!!! Praying for Y'alls continued strength and journey with Autism.
