Your reactions are great, but the editing...not so much. You guys cut all of Vader's scenes! And it's gotta be a sin to cut Vader's line after choking Krennik. "Be careful not to choke on your aspirations." It's like when a character starts telling a joke or a story, and we don't get to hear or see the payoff. That's what we came for, the reaction to those special moments that made this movie special to us. We want to share that with you. That's why people recommend certain movies. My favourite thing about the end is how it changes the meaning of the beginning of A New Hope. When you first watch it and you see Vader capturing Leia her “we are a diplomatic mission” sounds very plausible and sympathetic, but when you watch this you see what a ballsy outrageous lie it was when he literally just watched her fly away from battle with the plans with his own eyes!

You saw Mon Mothma in Return of the Jedi. She was the Rebel leader. Of course it was a different actress as it was 1983 but now the character is played by Genevieve O'Reilly. 0:15 - Actually, Rogue One would be Episode 3.9, not 3.5. While the beginning sets up Jyn and Galen Erso years before, the bulk of the movie takes place right before Episode 4. Vader watching the Tantive IV zoom off into hyperspace at the end is what prompts him to give chase to Tatooine, and the first scene of A New Hope. Also, if you want to get technical, "Solo: A Star Wars Story" would be Episode 3.5, as it takes place mid-way between Episodes III and IV. Around the same time as the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Speaking of the "non-movie" offerings..... will you guys be watching those? If so, don't skip the animated shows just because they are animated. There's a lot of lore to be found in them as well as new characters that you will encounter again (and in live action), and all of it is "Canon" information. Lastly, on that topic; Chronologically would be the best way to go with them.
5:55 - Yes, Cassian killed Tyvik, because he knew that if Tyvik was captured by the Empire, he would be tortured until he revealed all that he knew. Which included not only that the Rebellion now knew about the Death Star, but who his contacts within the Alliance were, where they were located, etc. In effect, Cassian did Tyvik a favor by killing him, because it was a quick death, rather than a torturous one that could last for days, or weeks, or even longer. The information that Cassian protected also included that it was Galen Erso who sent the message to the Rebellion about the Death Star.
6:45 - Jedha is an ancient planet that the Jedi called "home" thousands (possibly tens of thousands) of years prior to these events. That statue at one time likely stood upright. That gives the word "ancient" a whole new definition, doesn't it. ;)
7:50 - Yes, Saw Guerrera rescued Jyn and raised her. Taught her how to fight (which is why she kicks ass as good as she does), and most importantly, how to survive. Also, we first meet Saw in the Clone Wars animated series, but this movie was his "live action" debut.
15:35 - Saw is super-paranoid. He has good reason to be, but I won't go into details, and they could be considered spoilers for things you haven't seen yet.
16:05 - Both. There was a stand-in actor wearing motion capture stuff in order to set down what the CGI face would do, and provide the voice work. This had to be done, as Peter Cushing (the actor who originally played Grand Moff Tarkin in A New Hope) died back in the late 1990s.
18:05 - Saw voluntarily stayed behind. He knew that given his condition, had they waited for him, everyone would have died. He could barely walk at this point, and those who ran barely made it out of there alive. Saw died as he lived, for the greater good.
Also, remember that little girl that Jyn risked her life to save? She didn't get out, either.
22L55 - What better way to punish someone like Galen (who knowingly was ready to sacrifice himself), than to kill innocent people that he cares about? Especially when Galen said, "Spare them. They had nothing to do with it." which demonstrated how much he cared about them. Krennic cutting them down in cold blood hurt Galen worse than his own death would have.
23:55 - Remember.... Chirrut is BLIND!
25:20 - Both Jyn and Cassian bring up good points. But, think about this for a moment: Remember when Obi-Wan told Luke, "You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to, depend greatly on our own point of view." (Return of the Jedi) This back and forth is a perfect example of it. From Jyn's point of view, Cassian was sent here to murder her father rather than "capture" him and provide proof of the Death Star, but also of the weakness he placed there. That her father wasn't simply an "Imperial Collaborator", doing his best to help keep the galaxy subjugated. From Cassian's point of view, he disobeyed a direct order and likely didn't know why. That brings in what Chirrut said earlier, "All is as The Force wills it." It could be argued that Cassian (while certainly not a Jedi), was influenced by some "feeling" that killing Galen "just seemed wrong", which could be considered The Force as the root of that feeling, even though Cassian isn't Force sensitive. To Jyn, he's trying to justify the killing her father (which, we know, he wasn't directly responsible for) by the Alliance. Cassian is simply trying to explain that HE didn't pull the trigger and kill Galen, and that HE disobeyed orders.
25:55 - Yes. The Andor series does go into Cassian's backstory. Season 1 takes place 5 years before this movie. Season 2 is currently in production, and is (reportedly) going to cover the 4 years between Season 1 and Rogue One. But I still think you should go Chronological Order on the non-movie content. It will make more sense that way.
28:00 - Yes, that is Senator Bail Organa (adoptive father of Leia Organa).
32:40 - Did you notice how all of the Imperials that saw those explosions "froze", except Krennic? This is because Krennic has been "out in the field", while these other command officers had this cushy job where no one could attack them (or so they believed). The attack shocked them.
46:40 - Fun fact: The original "data card" from 1976 (when it was filmed) had been lost years ago (or possibly thrown away), so a new one had to be made. Of course, the original specs for it had been lost, as well... so the only reference material Lucasfilm had was A New Hope. Even if it's off by a tiny bit, I think they did a good job recreating it. Hopefully, they kept it this time.
43:20 - Leia was also CGI'd for this scene, but because she was only shown for a few seconds, no one really noticed. Carrie Fisher was able to see this movie right before she passed away. She initially believed that she had forgotten filming this scene back in 1976. She did sign off on it, though, once she was told it was CGI.
Rogue One, aside from being a banging Star Wars movie, is also about the "typically unnamed heroes who sacrifice everything for the greater good". Galen sacrifices himself to the Empire to put a weakness in their "ultimate weapon", he also sacrifices keeping his family with him (to keep them safe, although Lyra kinda blows part of that out of the water), Cassian sacrifices part of his own humanity for the greater good of the galaxy, Saw sacrifices his life so that everyone else can escape Jedha with their lives, everyone who went on the Skariff mission sacrificed themselves to retrieve the plans for the Death Star.....

Yeah, I would say that The Clone Wars movie and series are necessary to enjoy Rebels and most of the other series. The Filoni stuff, so to speak. I'm not a fan of him, this thing about more or less having to watch it all in a specific order is a weakness in the writing. Not to mention what actually happens within those series but everyone should give them a chance, of course. Anyway, that's why I was so impressed by the Andor series, it truly stands on its own. Well, I guess it relies a bit on Episode 1-6 for context but those should be the first thing any new fan is introduced to Star Wars anyway.

@@tktopmovies You're very welcome. I have been a Star Wars fan since the original movie came out in 1977, and have been enamored by it ever since. Ever since I was a small child, Sci-Fi was my escape from real life (and the traumas it brought). Star Wars took it to a whole new level. On re-watching, I started to spot things I had missed previously, and as newer movies came out, my attention to detail picked up on a lot of things and how they connected. There were tons of life lessons, and I absorbed them as I got older. I was 10 in 1977, the perfect age for that movie. As each new movie, and now "series" comes out, I love to analyze how they fit in with the greater SW universe. So, I can safely say that you are in for a treat.
I will say that Clone Wars starts off a little "wonky", but it finds its feet by season 3 and ends up amazing by the end of season 7. We're currently getting the final season of The Bad Batch (the series that picks up where Clone Wars ends), and its been really good so far. Rebels is a favorite of mine, that I revisit often. All of these are animated shows, and certainly NOT the "kiddy shows" I originally thought they were.
Also, to toss a suggestion at you, if you haven't seen the Sequel Trilogy yet, hold off on them. Catch up on the timeline first, those movies will make a bit more sense if you do. (We got them before certain things came to light in the series', and were left shaking our heads. There's some backstory in the shows, but nothing super obvious. But enough "clues" dropped that you can watch them and say, "hold on, is this connected to THAT?" And yes, it can be argued that it's an attempt to "fix what fans hated"... but I didn't "hate" them, I just didn't understand them at the time. Now that we're getting some "backfill" on the missing lore... it's making sense. So, I'm going with it, because I'm enjoying what I'm seeing. But you'll always have some people who will die on the hill of "Only Lucas' movies count!", and that's fine. They're missing out, IMHO.... but that's their choice and I won't hate on them for it.
Oh, in case your wondering.... I'm disabled and unable to work. So, one of my hobbies is posting Star Wars related replies to Reaction videos. May as well put my extensive SW knowledge to some good use, right? lol

The reason you didn't see the traditional Star Wars crawl and music at the beginning is because it's a side story and not part of any trilogy. There's a humorous nod to this when K2 starts to say: 'I've got a bad feeling about this ' and Gyn and Cassian cut him off with a Shhh and QUIET letting the audience know this is a different story and production. That phrase is spoken in every Star Wars movie by someone. Solo, another Star Wars story also leaves out the traditional intro.

Not all force-sensitive beings are Jedi. The Jedi are an "order" of force users that follow a particular sort of religious orthodoxy that involves the force. Think of Jedi like Jesuits or Buddhists. The Sith are another religious order, but they focus on the dark side of the force and use it for power and control. Vader and the Emperor were Sith. Chirrut was not a Jedi, but he was a force-user.

The fact that a single reactor ignition shot from the Death Star was that powerful is scary.
I know Jyn was in shock, but she still should've realized that Cassian had nothing to do with the X-Wing attack on the base. He even tried to stop them. He did everything he could.
Chilling seeing Mustafar again. That lava fall looked like the same one in RotS too, but, idk.
Obviously not in this reaction, but I've seen so many other people mock the "be careful not to *choke* on your aspirations, Director" line, but what they fail to realize is that fits Anakin's/Vader's sarcastic personality so well.
The rebel alliance annoyed me so much. Calling Jyn a criminal? She's only a "criminal" in the eyes of the empire, and so are the rest of the rebels, so their point was moot.
The irony of Krennic being the first to be blasted away by his own work.
    Vader at the end...just chills.

Answering your question: Is Grand Moff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star is a combination of CGI and live person. Original actor, Peter Cushing aka Grand Moff Tarkin in original 1977's Star War died in 1994 at 81. LucasFilm created software for superimpose (deepfake) face of a person to another one. They hired another actor with similar features as Peter's plus voice too. They did same thing for Carrie Fisher except they de-aged Carrie as young Leia similar to original version. This movie was released about 9 days before her unexpected death on December 27, 2016.

I've noticed, through watching several reactions, between this channel and several others, that women tend to focus on characters, where men tend to focus on story. Katie is exactly right. She noticed Jimmy Smitts, who played Senator Organa, adoptive father of Princess Leia Organa, in the prequel trilogy, which is pretty good considering she's a newcomer to the Star Wars franchise, especially when Ty didn't seem to notice. No judgment, though. I realize neither of you are "diehard Star Wars fans", since you obviously didn't recognize planet Yavin, and it's giant red moon, as the secret rebel base, from Episode IV.
Also, Grand Moff Tarkin, played (originally) by Peter Cushing, was indeed CGI. Peter Cushing was old in 1977.

Andor is the best Star Wars content to date. It is an acquired taste, as it is a slow burn series but stick with it. It's not for everyone, as it's not as flashy or action packed as most Star Wars content but it is rewarding in other ways. I first saw A New Hope in 1977 as a 10 year old, so Rogue One was such an unexpected surprise. Andor is different to any other Star Wars series but harder hitting in so many ways. I really think u should give it a try

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, do watch Andor. People often say it's a slow burn, but every episode pushes the plot and characterization very quickly through dialog and brilliant acting. The story actually moves quite fast. Andor is very much like a literary novel, if you think about it. Think of how much space a novel takes for worldbuilding and dialog and how little space it uses for, say, a car chase. Andor is like that.

Rogue One is particularly brilliant in that it fixes a couple of continuity issues from both Revenge of the Sith and from A New Hope. At the end of “Sith” they showed Vader and the Emperor looking at the Death Star that was under construction. It bothered me that it took nearly twenty years to finish it. Now we know that it would have been done much faster except that Galen ran away and then delayed the progress. On the other side, it was a bit silly that the rebels were able to analyze the entire Death Star plans and figure out the small weakness in a matter of a couple of hours. Now we know that Galen had told them what to look for. It is rare that a new movie is able to meaningfully fix previous inconsistencies.

Tarkin was a CGI mask laid over a real actor, some of the rebel pilots at Scariff are the same ones from A New Hope, they lifted them from the film footage.
Some of the interior scenes for Scariff base were filmed in Canary Wharf's London Underground station and the scenes featured heavily in one of the trailers and to more than a few people it was reallty obvious where it was filmed, even with all the set dressing.
The reason you never see Tarkin's feet is Peter Cushing hated the boots he was made to wear and insisted on wearing slippers while filming.
Lastly, this film takes place somewhere between 2 hours and two weeks before A New Hope.

Rogue One is easily 1 of the best Star Wars related films ever, especially in more recent years though obviously this in itself is getting on now from when first came out. But yeah it was a strong movie beginning to end memorable engaging characters memorable story and it stood on its own identity whilst still not going over the top and weird to retain credibility in the Star Wars saga. Basically unlike a certain movie after The Force Awakens that set in the disconnect between how some felt about the direction Star Wars had taken and the very name making a ton of toxicity. You wouldn't have had all of that if the new trilogy they did would have been of Rogue One level throughout.

For me, this is my favorite Star Wars movie bar none. It captures so much of what I love about Star Wars so cleanly, and it just... hits like a brick with the emotions. Don't get me wrong, the Jedi are awesome and all, but if I'm being honest... I have always tended to prefer more of the ground-level stories... the people who are just fighting to do their best in a galaxy turned on its head.
I'll also say that, even having watched the movie, the novelization is 200% worth reading (or listening to on audiobook). In the final battle on Scarif, you get each of the main characters' first person point of view during their last moments... like K-2SO's internal diagnostics and probability processing as he is just doing his best to give them the best chance of succeeding in transmitting the plans. It is just so beautifully written.
Anyway, glad you guys loved this one so much! It deserves every ounce of love that it can get.
