  • Adequate hip abductor (moves away from midline of body) muscle function is directly linked to good physical function and minimal or absent limping after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Limited hip abductor muscle function increases the risk of falls after hip replacement surgery. While severe loss of abductor strength results in Trendelenburg gait, even moderate strength deficits have been associated with long-term negative effects such as knee osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, or chronic lower back pain. Consequently, postoperative #hipabductor muscle function may affect the outcome of total #hipreplacement directly by preventing falls and/or indirectly by preventing pain as a consequence of orthopedic pathologies related to abductor muscle strength deficits.

Studies have consistently shown that hip replacement patients can improve hip muscle strength and function with targeted rehabilitation exercises. ‪@ChrisRaynorMD‬ , orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at Queensway Carleton Hospital (Ottawa, ON) and owner of Human 2.0 Fitness recently posted an excellent video on You titled "Post hip surgery GLUTEAL STRENGTHENING EXERCISES to address a limp (glute bridge and running man)"

Can you name the primary and secondary hip abduction muscles? (more abductor info in upcoming post) #hiparthroplasty #hippainrelief

@@alecfenwick3161thx Alec! I appreciate that. I’m ‘young’ too (51) and just hate what life has become. I simply want to walk again. I am super excited and wish I could do it tomor.
I have a physically disabled daughter so the planning of this is going to be a little difficult with some challenges to get squared away.
At this point all the joints in my lower body hurt and I keep reading and watching that this is all stemmed from the bad hip and the pressure it has put on the other joints. Did you experience this?
