1995 had total right replacement age 50. During the following 25 years played racketball, rode horses, down hill skied and age 62 took up singles tennis. Age 75 had some parts replaced and still going strong.

      Which approach did you did?
      Which doctor did the procedure?

    • @JohnDoe-mp1zk

@jack o'lantern I really do believe "pick the dr, not the procedure" . So many variables and opinions I found myself going nuts trying to make that decision. I read that quote somewhere and I do believe its valid and it helped me. I had hip replacement at 45 and while I really liked my Dr. my results were not ideal. He was highly regarded among his peers and in the community. He did not do the anterior approach, but I felt comfortable with him and I dont believe he did anything wrong but the bottom line is you just dont know how you will respond. No matter what they tell you, because all I heard was "oh, you will do great" considering the condition you are in. I was in excellent shape at the time. My recovery was horrendous. I was still using a walker after 6 weeks, not typical of a hip replacement and it really was about two years before i could say, oh yeah thats right i had my hip replaced. My body fat was low and in my legs must have been 2-3% if that. I almost feel that might have been more of a negative than positive. Everyone I know that was heavy or had a lot more body fat than I all remarkably better than I.Of course this anecdotal, but I almost feel like it might have been better to have some extras body fat, so pack some extra fat on ya before getting done. Who knows, certainly not me but making the decision you are going through now is difficult and I remember doing so. I feel for ya. If i had not like and trusted my doctor I can trell yopu I would be much more cynical and angry about the whole ordeal and that wouldn't have served anyone well. So, Thanks Dr Mark Heller.

My advice was to bridge ASAP, so I started the day I had my operation and have done it every day since, to date I am 4.5 weeks
since the op, I am walking with out an aid, or a limp, I am riding my push bike every day for an hour and I turned 72 last may. This operation was one of the best things I have done. Don't put it off.

Had a posterior THR 6 weeks ago. I'm walking comfortably with one crutch or stick 2Km daily, inside I'm starting to walk with no support at all. The best thing I did prior to surgery was to look at as many actual operations on TH-cam as I could. I was totally relaxed going into surgery and haven't looked back.

Hope this post helps someone out there.i was due for an anterior total hip replacement but just before I was to be wheeled into theatre my doctor said your leg seems to be more noticeable shorter than your right leg so I have decided it will be better to do the posterior approach as it will give us more room to do the hip and get your left leg the same length.this I thought was a bad start but I am pleased to report that all went well and I am now pain free.i was walking normally in 6 weeks without any aids and going upstairs with ease.i put this down to gods help ,I also did my best by doing gym work months before my operation losing excess weight any eating healthy I will never be able to repay my doctor and his team for what they have now given me so thankyou.

My doc was told I have leg length differential and scoliosis. He did the anterior approach and my leg length is way off. It's tilting my pelvis and causing nerve pain. I can't run. I have to wear a lift in my right tennis shoe (no flip flops or sandals bc the lift doesn't work in/on them). I told him I was a tennis player. I was going to remind him before surgery about my leg length and scoliosis but I never saw him. Didn't see him after either. Was blown off when I told them my right leg was shorter now. If I stand right it's about .5 to .75 of an inch off. I am so pissed. 😓

Had Bi-lateral staged THA, right weeks apart, in June and August, 2021. Had Anterior approach. No hip precautions. No pain..could sleep any way I wanted. Actually woke up to discover I had rolled into my left (surgical) side, about 3 nights after surgery, while sleeping. That freaked me out a bit. Anyway, Anterior Hip replacement was piece of cake, for me. Was walking a mile, with no came and no pain, 5 weeks post surgery, and went back to work at that time. Kudos to Dr. Tim Wagner, in Rochester,,NY.

I had left hip anterior surgery on 11/30/22. My hip pain had been about an 8 or 9, I basically could not do anything without a great deal of pain. This is in addition to a left knee that needs a replacement and chronic lower back pain. I would say my post surgery pain was about what I expected. It was well managed in the hospital and I went to rehab for 4 days where it was still well managed. Of course I did have pain, certain movements felt like 1,000 bees were stinging me all at once. Now home for 4 weeks, and with no precautions, I have been keeping up with my PT exercises (a must) and my pain is minimal. I would say that the worst part is getting comfortable sleeping but that is improving. It is a joy to have relief from the constant sharp pain. Thank you Dr. Alpaugh, great job!

I am 67 and heading into my 5th week after posterior THR. Been without walker or cane since middle of week 3. I only used extra strength Tylenol for pain the first week. I am sleeping on my back and non surgical side with pillow between my knees. I do experience sciatica and thigh pain that will wake me during the night but sleep is getting better. I see PT 2xweek and of course do my at home exercises. I still have alot of discomfort in incision area but doc said by week 8 that should be mostly resolved. My advice is to follow your doctor's hip protocol and most importantly keep moving so you don't get stiffness.

I had anterior surgery, which is the best way to go - for a full hip replacement. The recovery is faster with better results. My physical therapy started on the third day after my surgery. On the first day of physical therapy, I was instructed to do the bridge exercises. It helps to build the muscle around your glutes, it has been 4 months since my surgery and I am doing very well. I was told I cannot ever return to running or jogging. However, I love hiking, walking, bicycling and lifting weights.
Of course I had an outstanding physician who specializes in anterior hip replacement and knees. I am sure the hip replacement can come out of the joint by doing excessive sports, or jumping, running or possibly a surgical error, or a medical anomaly. Whatever the case it is man made and not God made. We need to be careful with our new hip.
Anterior surgery has improved since this video was made. You need to look at the latest research in the last 5 years on anterior hip replacement. Thank you for the informative video, but please update it.

From what I can see on the different social media groups about Hip Replacement, recovery results are all over the place. Recovery from the posterior approach is much more difficult. In researching the surgical approaches for my hip replacement, I found 4 distinct surgical approaches. My objective was to find the optimal (from the patients perspective) procedure to restore function and recovery. The surgical approach I chose resulted in No movement restrictions and very rapid progression through physical therapy rehabilitation with very little physical discomfort post-surgery. I was driving within two weeks after surgery and achieved all of the PT goals in about half the time that the two approaches described in this video. It is important to note that my surgery was a bit more expensive than the traditional methodologies you describe but the elimination of dislocation risk alone was well worth that investment. The consumer should be made aware that there are, indeed, other options available to anyone. Unfortunately, finding them frequently requires independent research which the primary care physician may not know or may not suggest.

My surgeon recommended I don't do those things they are talking about for around 6 weeks and he was correct cause I was able to do those things somewhere around 8 weeks . I believe it took 8 weeks for me due to me still being on meds for my RA which slowed the healing process ; that was for hip #1 . For hip #2 I stopped my RA meds before and don't plan on getting back on them till after eight weeks ; it has been two weeks now . Actually after hip #1 surgery I wasn't able to lay on that hip until after three weeks but after hip #2 I was able to lay on that hip within a week and half . That is why I believe my RA meds slowed down the healing process . I believe this hip #2 will be healed in 4 weeks . I'm able to articulate this hip at two weeks similar to hip #1 at 8 weeks . Even though after hip #1 replacement hip #2 still needed replacing I can compare the healing processes of both hips .

Thank God I had good doctors. Fast forward to now: I am having trouble with balance and can't get onto my motorcycle or horse yet. I suppose that the issue of my left knee needing replacement might be compounding the problem with balance.

    • @robertbates1910
      @robertbates1910 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@juneschalit5531 yes, u dont have to keep it dead center, just dont go out side of ur outer thighs, with ur head. As far as getting in and out of the car, my surgeon sent me to a prehab class, before the surgery, where they teach u how to use ur walker, how to get in and out of the car, stepping up on curbs, etc. I never had an issue. I was climbing stairs the same day as my surgery, without the walker, I dont recommend that, follow ur Dr. Instructions, but I'm only 48, and wanted to push myself. If u really want to see what they're going to do, there are videos, on TH-cam, that show the full surgery, both approaches too, the anterior approach, being the preferred one. But if ur a bit squeamish, I wouldn't watch, I watched both, before my surgery, so I knew exactly what they were going to do. I hope things go well for u, I think u will be happy with the results, dont worry too much, the actual surgery was a breeze. Oh, there is one more thing, I had out patient surgery, I was home 2 hours after the surgery, but before they let me go home, they made me walk, to the bathroom, and urinate, which I did, no problem, there was a nurse behind me, while I used the toilet, as soon as I finished, I passed out, came to about 5 min later, in a wheelchair, back at my bed. This is a normal reaction, it doesn't happen to everyone, but they didnt tell me about it, but were prepared, with a wheelchair, in case it happened. Since ur having both done, it may be different for u, and I dont know if u will be outpatient, or staying for a day or so, ur experience may be different. Even with the dislocation, it was, overall, a great experience, I'd do it all again tomorrow. I had my surgery in Jan. 14 2020, I dislocated on Jan 26 2020, but today, just a few months later, I can run, jump, ride bikes, and do most everything I did when I was younger. Good luck! Take care!

It would;ve saved me from dislocating mine 7 times if it were shown like this .Whereas a drawing is easy to understand for the person explaining it while the patient doesnt always grasp the concept of the rendering that is verbally explained ...Asimple demonstration will save thousands of people from excruciating pain..(my first dislocation was exactly like you demonstrated i bent over in a seated posistion to pick up a remote or phone and it felt like a cartoon of the springs in a clock exploding out of a clock and it hurt worse than anyone could explain...And i still had to get to a car to go to the ER it feels like the ball from the joint is riding up inside your skin even with your belly button..Being that this is old I doubt Bob or Brad will see this but if this helps even 1 person then it was well worth my time!

I had the same experience, John. I am a 78-year-old female and had a fall and had to have hip replacement posteriorly. After about two weeks, I was just sitting on the couch and stood up and it displaced and I could not move at all. The pain was horrifying. The orthopedist just had another doctor perform conscious sedation and did a manipulation of my leg to get it repaired. I was then discharged and, no more than 4 hours later, the hip dislocated again. I went to the ER again and then the original orthopedist did a 4-hour surgery on my hip. I am so worried now it will happen again. I am strictly abiding by the restrictions. What I don't understand is how the hip dislocated a second time after me being home from the hospital only 4 hours. Hope you are well, John.

Am 56 --- had total anterior hip replacement Wednesday Nov 18th and came home Thursday Nov 19th.
Had a spinal block and sleeping aid instead of general anesthesia. That was excellent. Don't remember a thing. Was up and walking 3 hours after surgery. Wanted to walk more but there weren't enough nurses to help me.
It's a totally different kind of pain now. It burns or stings. Skin feels tight. The only thing I'm concerned with is, I have (had) arthritis in both hips but the left one was the one that crippled me up. Now that that was replaced, the right one hurts like never before. Am anxious to find out why. I hope it's just temporary but I think when he put the rod in, it might have evened out my pelvis and now there's more pressure on the right side. That's only a guess. But overall, I'd do this again without hesitation.

I feel the same thing. My right leg was 7/8” longer than my left, and the socket was shallow and didn’t “cover” the femoral head (ball) well which meant there was additional looseness or motion. So my running and lifestyle/active were part of what wore it out/no cartilage left in the joint before surgery. My ortho and I discuss leveling the legs a little, not a complete evening up, so I wouldn’t have to adapt as far as my spine was concerned. Now my left hip has had an occasional sharp pain and click on two or three occasions, which alarmed me, because that snapping going up stairs, or getting out of a chair the first couple of steps was how my right hip felt, and it worsened before I got the MRI with dye that gave us the best information on what was going on, and it was “bone on bone.” Re: your pain on the unoperated one...depending on how far post op you are, if you were like me, I limped quite a bit at first, and wound up putting a lot more weight on my left leg, than my right ( the operated one) and therefore it has more responsibility and probably is tiring. I’m hoping those couple of pinches don’t turn into the excruciating pain I had i my right hip before I had surgery. I am not in the mood for anymore disability and want to get back to my active lifestyle. So I’m hoping my left one will calm down now that I’m walking normal strides with my right. Yes, the leveling of the pelvis may be fatiguing the one that had less responsibility in the your strides. You’re 3 yrs post-op, I wonder how that all turned out.

Ok from my experience as these guys don't respond , I will tell you all this . I have just had my 2 nd hip replacement ( 3 weeks ago ).the 1 st was 2 yrs ago on my right side , I am not fitness nut but do move a lot ( in bits as im no spring chicken ) but I do keep moving / then sitting ( due to bad back , mostly ) then moving again . Now that hip is brilliant I can actually sit on my chair and put that foot up on the chair and rest my elbow on my knee with no problem at all , I threw the crutches away 2 weeks after the op when I had this op done and never looked back. Ok 2 nd hip replacement ( left leg ) 3 weeks post op now .I'm still using elbow crutch ( 1 only ) no problem or pain getting in / out of bed .I can take a few " normal steps " but also use crutch for support not balance when needed. to be honest Im not sure if im doing too much or not enough. Ive cooked , vacuumed house etc , all from day 2 of coming home. I went in Monday at 9 am , I was back home 1.30 pm Wednesday..I will admit I am being a little more cautious with this one as I'm hoping for a strong hip like the last one at the end of the day. In saying that after 3 weeks ( yesturday ) I pick stuff up from floor , I know I shouldnt but do bend more than 45 degrees sometimes. Did not do physio after surgery after either op as I get more done at home , movement wise and my physio agreed so he just told me what I should make sure I do and I did that at home...Anyway both hips done , never thought this would happen to me but hey I guess I'm just lucky lol .

What I find confusing is, I have interviewed two surgeons that do anterior approach and they say no precautions are necessary after surgery and no rehab! ZERO! Maybe things have improved since this video was made in 2014. Unless the info my surgeons gave me the wrong info, maybe you should update this video. Love your channel, though!

@@lewissimo How long ago was your surgery? You have to wait until your physiotherapy allows you to bend. I was told NEVER to do any warrior poses but one of my yoga instructors had both hips done (one twice) and she was able to move in and out of these poses with no difficulty. I can't remember how soon after my surgery I was able to do them too but it might have been around the six month mark where I felt confident enough to try. Just keep moving, do your physio exercises every day, 2-3 times a day and you will get there. I should add that I was working with a trainer right up until my surgery to ensure that I was as strong as I could be. My brother was the same and he cycled 18 miles four weeks after his posterior replacement! Good luck.

One year ago (Dec 2020) I had Septic Arthritis. I was on a drip in hospital
for 10 days. When discharged I expected everything to return to normal. I was wrong. I was fit and slim and could go upstairs 4 at a time at aged 56yrs. I used to play football for 2 pubs. But, now I am like a 70yr old. I drag my left leg behind me and limp like crazy.. The pain in my hip is very bad and life destroying. I have 2 boys aged 9yrs and 12yrs and I can no longer do ANYTHING with them.
My doctor told me I need a hip replacement and that I can expect to have it done sometime after next January 2023. So, still another 11mths to go. It seems so far away. My 2 boys will be then at an age where they no longer want to play football or do anything with dad. I walk to work everyday & am a shadow of the man I used to be. A hip replacement is now the main goal of my life. Please god perform some miracle and fix my hip or shorten the waiting list for me. We British are so proud of our NHS but I have no idea why . . . Its really appalling.
I have never in my life wanted ANYTHING the way I now want a hip replacement.
I will wait patiently because beggars cannot be choosers.

Same thing going on over here in Canada; socialist healthcare as well. Took forever to even see the surgeon, who was terrifically vague about wait times, though his secretary's answering machine says "don't call us, we'll call you, and the wait is 18-24 months". So I had a mini-breakdown in his office, because I'm 50 with a teen still at home and elderly parents.
Doubtful he gave a rat's ass, but I said I don't think I can make it through two more years of this relentless pain.
Had the right one done within weeks pre-Covid...it sure messed everything up. Look at the cancer patients with delayed treatments.
Fingers x'd you get in earlier than next year. I've had so many dark nights of the soul that every new day of agony I'm wishing was my last.
This is just existing, not living.

@@oliviamartini9700 I am in Britain. Our health service is the NHS. It is treated like a religion in Britain. NOBODY CRITICISES THE NHS. But it is actually quite poor especially since COVID. If you have an accident (car or fell off a ladder etc..) and are taken the hospital they fix it there and then. But if you go hospital with an infection they deal with the infection and you are then discharged and then join a long list for surgery. Crazy really. That's what happened to me. I am now on the waiting list. But if a guy falls off a ladder tonight and an ambulance is called he will go to hospital and straight to surgery. CRAZY. I know what you are thinking "why don't you sit on the ground and say you fell and get it done immediately? " . I have thought of that but it will come up on the computer "on waiting list" and they will just send me on my way. Madness.
