  • If you want to stop limping after knee replacement (or any knee surgery for that matter), you will want to follow this series of exercises that will help you walk normally again.
    In this week’s video, I shared the series of exercises I give my patients which effectively gets rid of their limp and helps them walk normally again.
    This video will cover the following:
    ✅ Why you limp
    ✅ Standing on 1 leg
    ✅ Marching
    ✅ Stepping over cones
    …and so much more!
    Enjoy this week's video!

    Just had a total knee replacement and loose bone removal for the 2nd time in my right knee last year and on Monday and it's now Friday, still in severe pain( 1st TKR though)!! I'm praying it goes away soon! But, I have been doing my exercises and trying to walk. Crazy amount of pain 😞 I really appreciate these kind of videos, thank you so much for sharing 🙏❤️

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're welcome @ElizabethH-f2c. I understand what you are describing. I see that in patients. As the nerves get better and the surgery heals, putting more weight on that leg gets easier. Start with weight shifting even if the nerves are bad. That will retrain your leg to bear more of the weight. Your brain will trust it more as it sees that the leg can hold the weight. I hope this helps.🙏

    Hi My name is Keren and I am a 73 year old woman living in Sydney Australia. I had a TKR on my R knee almost 5 years ago and a revision (to put in a larger spacer behind the kneecap) 18 months ago. I have walked with a limp ever since the first surgery. 4 days ago I had another surgery to release the ITB below the knee and also had some of the patella removed. I am still in a lot of pain from this latest surgery, but am keen to start doing these exercises when I feel I can. Any other tips or comments would be appreciated. I am very depressed about all the surgeries and the work I have put in over the past few years seemingly to no avail. I found this video nice and easy to follow and hopefully, when the pain subsides from this latest operation, I will benefit from following your sequence of exercises.

      Dear Karen, I'm sorry to hear about what you went through. Aside from these balance exercises, make sure you focus on the strength ad range of motion of your knee. I shared exercises on how to do those in other videos. Keep in mind also that because of all the surgeries you had, your walking may not be perfect but with continued effort, it will be better.🙏I hope this helps.

    Thank you, I learned new stuff. I've had both knees done. One in nov. 7th then other july 26th.
    But 1st one was doing good, then when other side went out so I was depending on leg with 1st replacement.
    When I stand, I hold position for second or two to make sure which one I can put weight on.
    When I try to sleep same thing, the 1st hurts as bad as 2nd. I've got to get this right. I own and run a business. I've got to get back to 100%.

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to hear this @user-sm8ft3tu1f. I know what you mean since I have my own business as well. You most probably overused the first one because the second one did not do too well. That causes inflammation on the first one and made it worse. Permanent solution is to get the second TKR better so the first one will not have to compensate too much. Also address the symptoms on the first one such as inflammation and pain. Make sure to work on the strength and range of motion on both knees. Wish you the best.🙏

    Thanks for your video. I see may people here are very early in after their knee replacement/other surgery. I had a knee replacement done last May, so it's about my 10th month after surgery. My walking is not very normal. I feel stiff and I do limp. Afraid to fall. MY PT was ok but I had a physical therapist who said I did not push myself at home. I was, to the point that I was exhausted. I had a knee manipulation done in July because of scar tissue. I went from 91 degrees (at 6 weeks after surgery ) to 121 dogs after I was done with PT---in September. So my recovery was very slow, but I really could not bend that leg. Sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing--when I could have had a second opinion, for a torn mesnicus. Maybe the knee implant was not really what I needed done. But I can't. change this now, and I have to walk more confidently and without that limp. Thanks again.

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dear @amyr3285, thank you for sharing this. I can see based on what you shared that recovery is slower than what I usually see but everyone is different. Everyone's body heals differently. Other medical conditions affect this as well. The positive there is you eventually got to 121 deg and that is great. Aside from that, you have to continue working on your strength and balance to have a chance of getting rid of the limp and to feel safe when walking. I wish you the best.🙏

      You're welcome Eileen. I hope it helps. It is part of the recovery process that you start off walking slowly. It is similar to learning to walk again when we were toddlers. Hello sir
    I had a patella fracture and it has been 7 weeks post surgery.Now my docter has told me to walk but I am not confident and when I walk more swelling occurs
    My doctor told me to walk more and not do any exercise
    He said that walking more is the best exercise for recovery is this true as I watch many people on you tube saying they did a lot of exercises to gain strength in quad muscle as well as patella

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question @jagroophundal7021. In my opinion, walking alone is not enough to build strength and improve range of motion. Walking is an efficient way of locomotion. It requires a small amount of strength and range. You need to do more to get the body to get stronger and more flexible. Once you start exercising and getting more strength, flexibility and balance, you will get more confident. Expect the swelling for a while. That takes more time to go away. I hope this helps.🙏

    Hi sir Thank you for such detailed information and action, it is very comprehensive. I had my patellar fracture 3 months ago and now for past 3 weeks,I started walking without any support. I limp, so I came across your video. My query is when I walk I put the weight on my heel of the fractured leg( left one) due to which it gets sore. I noticed that with my right leg I don't necessarily put all the weight on the heel. Now can you please guide me as to how can I get this normalised.

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Anushree. I'm sorry to hear that you fractured your patella. I am happy to know though that you are progressing. Walking has different phases. The stance phase (when you put weight on that leg) starts with heel strike (when your heel touches the ground). It should quickly and smoothly transition to foot flat (your whole foot in contact with the ground). Then you lift your heel off the ground. Normally, you should not be putting too much weight on that leg during heel strike and you should not be staying at that stage for a long time. You stay at midstance longer. Try practicing that rocker movement of the foot and see if that helps even out your gait. Would love to know how it goes.

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not to sure about the question @jackwillome2397. If you just had a knee replacement and have burning sensation around the knee, usually it is because of either the inflammation from the surgery or the from the nerves that were cut during the surgery. Both of them are unavoidable. More often the burning sensation is because of the nerve. For that I suggest doing a desensitization technique which is to rub the area for 5 minutes several times a day. Start with something soft then gradually progress to rougher textures as the burning sensation gets less. Hope this helps.🙏

      @@user_lvj the approach and the exercises are similar for hip replacement. You can follow the exercises in the video as well. Hope this helps. Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

      @@marlenewyngaard9313common reasons for stiffness on the back of the knee are: tightness of the hamstrings or swelling on the back of the knee (baker's cyst). Stretch your hamstrings daily and if the back of the knee is swollen, ice it. That will help with the inflammation. Hope this helps.

    7, months back I had tkr surgery.Why I cannot walk properly when I get up from sitting position.

      I'm sorry to hear this @srabastisinha5994. It is hard to accurately say why. The most common reasons can be because of weakness on your leg muscles and stiffness on you knee. Either one or both can make it difficult to walk when you get up from sitting. Try this: move you leg (bend and extend your knee before getting up) this will help if the problem is stiffness. And work on strengthening your quads and hamstrings. You can check my channel for videos on how to do that. Hope this helps.🙏

      I'm sorry to hear this @anitajain5961. It's hard to say specifically without seeing you but 3 mos is not a long time for a TKR. Recovery can take 6 mos to a year depending on your condition.

    It's six weeks after my TKR, I love walking, but whenever I walk like 2000 steps the following day the new gets more swellen with increased lavels of pain. Again when I try to walk my family tell me l am limping.
    Am wondering, what is it am doing wrong?

    • @restorepluspt
      @restorepluspt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question @reenakblas2307. At 6 weeks post-TKR, you expect swelling to occur after walking. This is part of the recovery process.. The swelling persists sometimes up to a year after surgery. Continue icing and elevating the leg as these helps with the swelling.
      As for the limping, you have to check if you have full extension and at least 90 deg flexion, and have good strength in your quads, hamstrings and hip abductors and good balance on 1 leg. If some of them are lacking, you will more likely have a limp. I hope these help. 🙏

      I'm sorry to hear this @jamunasenthilkumarsangeeth6944. If cross you mean your feet cross each other midline, I suggest strengthening your gluteus medius and stretching your adductors. I wish you the best. 🙏

      I'm sorry to hear this @Khairuniss. The solution will depend on what is causing the swelling of your foot. You may have to address that so the swelling can go down and you will be able to walk without limping.
